today we are building two different size Stars why because they nest together both of these can be done 100% using this jig on the miter saw and do not let these little pointy ends intimidate you both of these stars are built with only two different pieces of wood and two angles total if you want to make this a miter saw solo mission go ahead and just pick up some 1 by tws from The Big Box store otherwise I bought a 1x 6x8 and I ripped it down to an inch and a half and then with the scraps I can probably build at least one or two more stars to start we are going to need a jig to cut that 54° angle on the miter saw so go ahead and grab just a couple pieces of scrap go ahead and set your miter saw to 30° be careful that it does not lock into that 31.5 that's a common rafter size that's not what we want we want 30 on the dot makes math easier later on and then with this board we are not cutting it in that direction we are going to cut it in this direction so so wherever the center of your board is we are going to go ahead and remove this corner and then the scary part we are going to flip it around and remove the other Corner once you cut this off this piece is going to be loose so if you use some 3M tape if you are not comfortable holding it down I am going to put pressure down but I'm not going to put pressure pressure forward cuz again I don't want it to fly up into the saw so go ahead get that Mark centered in and remove whoa and remove this piece as [Music] well see it wants to bite it and Shove It Forward when you're done so now you got something looks like a little house adorable then with our piece of scrap I'm just going to go ahead and cut it off at that 30° as well with our two pieces cut we are going to match this guy up so that he runs parallel to one of the sides it does not need to be a 30° angle I'm just bad at math I guess so I did use a qu in luon board just to demonstrate how to build the jig so this board I'm going to nail it from the bottom because it's it's a piece of luon and that's not much to bite into so just go ahead and put that board against the side here put on that LU on I'm going to go ahead and just scoot him that direction a bit so that he holds on yeah back at the miter saw we are going to go ahead and set our fence to 24° and then with our jig it just goes up against our original fence so now we have a makeshift fence at 30 ° plus our blade which is at 24 and that's going to give us that 54 sharp angle right here what I also like to do is just go ahead and use this little guy and clamp down your jig just so he's not moving around you don't have as much chance of Kickback or anything moving on you it's a little bit safer and the first thing we're going to do with this I'm actually going to end up trimming off a little bit of this board up to here now my jig just looks kind of silly yeah much better we are going to go ahead set our board inside of this jig and cut off the end now we have a 54 Dee angle I do go ahead and match the other side as well just because we're going to be cutting it to size here in a moment and this way you don't have to set the jig up as many times you do want to make sure that you're holding the board down pretty tight because if not your blade will wander away from the board and make your cut not Square so that when you're actually cutting your board the board itself is moving away from the saw as it passes through go ahead and cut as many of these angles as you can because it will take 10 of these per star once you have cut your 54° angles you can go ahead and remove your jig the next cuts are all going to be 34° and I actually do that from this side it's always in the way from this side of the saw I rotate the saw over to that degree so this will way I just have more room for my left hand to support the material and it's away from the actual blade itself with our 54° angle our 34° angle is going to run parallel with it so this line is actually going to be up against my fence and measured in so I'm going to put this line at 3 and 1/2 in and make my cut so it's going to look something like this and we're going to need of these for the first star this is where taking notes in Geometry would have definitely paid off and I don't even think we had geometry I don't know so we have our five pieces which are going to be the short pieces we now need a longer piece and no matter what your board thickness is no matter how big or small you want to make these trees it's easy to find the measurement for this one how you find your measurement is you are going to just measure this distance here which for us is an inch and a/4 quart so I have one I have an inch and a/ qu larger so I cut these to 3 and 1/2 these are going to be cut to 4 and 3/4 and that is so that way when you marry the boards together these Peaks will line up in the bottom otherwise when you go to begin assembling your star think kind of looking like a star and you put this piece in your pieces do not line up in the bottoms and it's going to start making it wonky so we are going to go ahead line up your cut line to the 4 and 3/4 and make five pieces for those ah okay hi hello hello so excited it's a Kevin Hart thing my wife's I don't know so we got our pieces they are going to get mashed together like this so the cut Edge the big buted Edge right there he is going to be visible look at that it's a star this is the first star that I am assembling ever so no pressure but you know it's if I mess it up I just re-record it so we are only applying glue to the shorter 54 degree angles right now so go ahead push him together make sure that this lines up nice and straight I am using a 1in 18 gauge Brad nail pretty easy and then repeat that for the other four [Laughter] this is one where my my angle had wandered as I told you before if you do glue them up that is what it's going to look like so we're going to have to do just a little sanding to get rid of that extra piece cuz I do want it to fit flat against the ground so that way when it stands up it doesn't look as silly and then again I think both of these angles ended up being chopped that's bad that they're next to each other it's a perfect star he's perfect one down I'm going to go ahead and let this star just dry overnight so that glue can get set up since the nails just kind of roughly hold it in place I don't want to put a bunch of pressure on it quite yet with a sander so go ahead set the miter saw back up using that jig and cut all of your boards back to that 54° angle for the next size star and by no means does this jig actually have to rest up against your saw blade I actually set mine off about a/4 of an inch so that way it's not riding the jig and it's not marring it up and it's it's just better because pretty soon you're going to have no jig if you keep pushing it into your saw blade then we're going to take a board and just set it underneath the star giving it about a/2 in extra space and then I'm going to draw my line kind of straight with the actual star itself so that way I know this is the length that it has to be for my next piece and this again will be the shorter piece and then we'll add that in inch and a/ qu to make the longer one so where we had actually marked for this line lines this up with the 5 1/2 in so I'm going to go ahead set this line to 5 and 1/2 and then cut five pieces for these shorter sides and again they are going to be parallel to each other for the longer pieces knowing that this is an inch and a/ quarter and we had just cut them to inch and a half we are going to go ahead and cut these to 6 and 3/4 with all of our pieces cut we are going to repeat those steps in building this next star so it's going to be the one that is just larger than him oh thank goodness oh thank goodness two nesting Stars sweet I just shot that entire thing with crap in the background I'm really trying to keep the background clean so like all the camera stuff isn't sitting around in the background it just looks messy to me I it's just the little things like that and additionally the last video that posted I didn't put anything down here uh because 20% of you are using the captions so I'm trying to keep this clear so stuff doesn't pop up that you want to read in the bottom when you're trying to read the captions so now it's moved to the top stuff like that you know care about you guys
