as a mother of eight the homemaking never stops but I love to be creative in my homemaking making the recipes decorating I love to make our home beautiful with collected vintage and antique finds this video is going to include a little bit of all of that so join me for a homemaker day in the life I want to say a quick thank you to Sally baby for sponsoring today's video I'm gonna go more into that later and show you how I wrap it Victor is the seventh baby that I have worn and it's the only way I'm able to get stuff done in my home so we're gonna go more into that in a bit this Homemaker Day in the Life Starts the day before as I prepare some sourdough for the next day most days in my life do involve some preparation the day before so that I'm ready to make something each day now I'm going to be doing a brand new recipe a Sourdough garlic rosemary brioche the dough is basically just like my regular brioche dough the night before you want this get three and a half cups of bread flour a quarter cup of sugar a half cup of milk one and a half teaspoon salt four eggs ten tablespoons of softened unsalted butter and a cup of bubbly sourdough starter in the stand mixer with the dough hook attached now you don't actually have to do this today before I actually had planned to to make this video a different day this Homemaker day in the life and I wanted to make my new recipe on the video so I made this dough and had it set out to bulk ferment and then I actually something came up and I didn't film this video for another three or four days and the dough just after the first bulk from it where it doubled in size I put it in the fridge for several days or for those additional three days and so when I finally end up making this it is several days later that's the cool thing about sourdough timing I know I say that on here all the time but I do want you to know that you don't need to be intimidated by that okay let this date begin so I'm starting by bringing into the kitchen some dishes from the night before a lot of times I have some water on my nightstand as well as a snack my favorite granola in milk is typically what I have I also pick up my previous days clothes and get them into our laundry hamper aka the bathtub I also turn on my frame TV I know it sounds so insignificant but I love making the spaces that I see the most often throughout the day beautiful so that's why I make my bed every morning I open the curtains plug in the TV and have art on there that I like and style the mantle it's not something that you would have to do so if you know if I'm ever in survival mode for whatever reason say lack of sleep or too many projects going on or somebody's sick those are all the things that would go but whenever everything is going right I really Value Beauty and so I will take some efforts to do that I also throw on a sweatshirt this morning because it's getting cool which is pretty exciting it's fall time I went back in to check on Victor and he stayed asleep so I'm going to sip my coffee and get breakfast going before I actually get him this amount of time actually varies a lot like some mornings he gets up when I roll out and he's with me from the beginning some mornings if I'm careful he'll stay asleep for a few hours still and this morning was actually one of the longer times so I was able to get a lot done before picking him up I'm doing my favorite go-to breakfast and it's just because I don't have to think about it it's not necessarily my favorite tasting I mean it's good and everybody likes it but I probably burnt them out on it just a bit but it's just so easy it's filling it has a lot of eggs in it which I like because we have so many eggs it has milk it has all the components I like it's an einkorn puff pancake so I do a dozen eggs three cups iron corn two cups milk some salt a quarter cup of sugar and then I put butter on the cast iron skillets blend that mixture up and pour it into hot cast iron skillets that I preheated on the stove with the butter and then put it in the oven until they're puffy this morning I am going to Jazz it up just a bit because it is apple season with some apples it's just gonna peel those dice them up put them into a pot with a little bit of water until some of the juices from the apples release and then add some brown sugar a little cinnamon make it sort of not jammish I'm not going to cook it down that much and not really syrupy but I don't know what exactly you would call it but a little fruit on top of these puff pancakes is always good we usually will do this with whatever is in season so I'll make like if it's blueberries or strawberries I'll make it into more of a sauce that I blend up with apples I'm gonna maintain some of that texture as opposed to I don't really want to make it applesauce it's also really good to top with whipped cream but I didn't get to that this morning but my kids very much appreciate it when I do when there's some kind of fruit and whipped cream and syrup it's really good I also start every morning with an espresso shot I'm still doing a single shot whenever I grind the beans I just press the single shot thing but then I do a double shots worth of water I don't know if that makes it like a shot and a half I'm not ready to move up to two shots but also I I like a nice cup of coffee I'm doing Fresh Cream in that coffee in the morning I don't Jazz it up it's just espresso and cream but then whenever I do my afternoon coffee I like to experiment for example recently my daughter made a bunch of caramel to go on top of homemade ice cream so for a while I was making some Caramel Lattes I'll do pumpkin spice lattes shaken brown sugar breve I do ice I do hot I will Top it with a homemade marshmallow I really like to play around with that afternoon cup of coffee that's pretty fun for me there are several cleanup times throughout the morning there were a few dishes in there from last night we usually do like to leave the kitchen really clean but then there'll be a few straggler things if someone gets a snack at the end of the night or has an activity and we get home late from it throughout I just keep checking on Victor to see if he's awake yet he still totally fine so I'm gonna let that boy sleep just as long as I can get as much done because once he wakes up he's going to want to nurse and sit there for a little bit which is always fine too usually I try to double up tasks so if Victor wakes up to nurse around the time that we'd be starting school and people come in from chores that's when I'll read with one of my sons or help them with their math assignment Luke and I have been in the habit lately of planning each week so this is a Monday we'll sit together and he has a notebook where he likes to keep track of all of the various times and dates and things that happen throughout the week so for example the things that he'll want to write on there is if I have a podcast recording because that's something that the house has to be quiet for and so he needs to help figure out you know where the kids are so they're quiet another would be Azure standard pickup that's happening this week soccer practices any appointments like Dental appointments hair appointments there are some festivals coming up we have a pie baking contest coming up this weekend that my daughter participated in last year and wants to do again so we have to figure out who's taking who to soccer and who's going with who to the pie baking contest we like to map that out on Monday so that we know where we need to be everything else kind of falls into place like School happens every day certain work tasks for our business happen every day certain Homestead chores happen every day those will need to go on there just things that are outside of the norm and there's always a few things outside of the norm every single week okay finally time to get get my real clothes on make my bed get my baby on in the wrap and get busy of course I need to change his diaper and nurse him but usually it's around the time that he wakes up that I think to fully get dressed do my hair and put the wrap on so that I can get more serious about the day and the work ahead I do try to get dressed every single day even if it's just jeans and a tank top in the summer the most comfortable thing for me to wear is a dress and an apron now that I'm in a baby wearing season I just try to wear something underneath the wrap that I can easily pull down if I have to pull a shirt up then the wrap sort of gets jumbled up so there are some postpartum baby wearing considerations I make in my outfits let's talk more about today's video sponsor Sally baby I have been talking about the Sally baby wrap for about six years just about almost six years here on this channel my most popular video to date is my Sally baby wearing tutorial first find the middle of the wrap and put it over your abdomen area pull each tail around the back and cross them and put them over your shoulders and then place them down through the middle of that Center piece that you originally placed on your abdomen next cross those wrap them around your back and back to the front and tie them the key with the Sally Baby Wrap is to get it nice and tight the cool thing about this kind of Baby Wrap is you can put the entire thing on before picking up your baby I'm just taking my left panel here and placing it under my baby's right leg and bottom the leg should be out and then doing the same thing with the right panel and then pulling that Center panel up over the baby I want that to hit at the nape of his neck and then I usually if he's tired will put his head under one of the panels I like to alternate them a bit so that he's not always looking one way or the other this soothes him right away now when they're older a lot of times they want their head out unless they're actually ready to go to sleep but Victor feels cozy whether he's asleep or awake he just likes being close to Mama but he'll fall right asleep whenever it is nap time a lot of people try to leave room for the baby but the baby naturally stretches it out and it's only comfortable to baby wear if they are super close if they're not sagging down their nose is close enough to kiss you can see their face and you shouldn't have to support the baby every time you move if you lean down to do laundry or the dishes or something you shouldn't have to hold them up the wrap should be tight enough that it feels nice and supportive Sally baby is launching their new Liberty of London print line on September 21st this particular print is called Myrtle and I think it is absolutely beautiful it's the prettiest print I have seen yet they also sent over a basil sleeper I already had some of the Sally baby Sleepers for Victor and Theo and Daniel because they are so cozy it's the same lightweight soft fabric that the wrap is made of only for baby clothes which is awesome and so cozy you can head over to Sally baby I'll leave a special link in the description box below they have so many beautiful ones not just from this launch and you can use the code farmhouse on Boon 10 for a coupon for a discount I've always loved the Sally baby because it's so lightweight I can wear it like a t-shirt so a lot of days especially in the early days of a baby whenever they want to be worn all the time you know before they're starting to scoot around or roll over I leave it on like a t-shirt I don't really take it off throughout the day I might take the baby out maybe somebody wants to hold the baby like a sibling or the dad but I just leave it on and so having a very beautiful print it's almost like it's your T-shirt but then also being lightweight these are some of the advantages that I find part of my homemaking tasks are to keep up on the decor and one aspect of that is the front porch plants we're starting to transition them into fall so I have out my summer Ferns and green things and then I also put some beautiful fall mums in front of that we also brought out some pumpkins until the green stuff dies I'm Gonna Leave it because I think it all looks very beautiful together and that way it's a slow transition you know it's not straight from Summer to fall we ease into it and then kitchen cleanup it just happens all throughout the day every time we go in the kitchen we're cleaning more the kids help a ton with dishes too and a lot of what is not shown in this video is the work that the kids are doing there's a lot of people in this house and that means a lot of laundry a lot of dishes it needs to be all hands on deck by everyone then there's also school so during the week we all work hard around here [Music] all right I always make extra whenever making breakfast this just leaves something sitting around on the countertop for people to snack on or if we need a quick meal we'll just eat that we always have food sitting out on our counter because normally I make more than we can even finish I also find a couple of stray cups of milk that somebody didn't finish I usually just chug those down before doing dishes really fast I don't like to waste stuff around here so I'll give it to a kid for a snack or I'll I'll drink it or eat it or snack on it today for lunch we are going to utilize that so more on that in a bit whenever we bring in things from our Homestead or from a harvest I like to use it as Decor one of those is eggs we're getting so many eggs right now I have a ton of egg baskets and what I do is I just take the clean eggs the ones that don't have to be washed so they can have that coating that helps them to stay good at room temperature and I put them in one of mini baskets and then I rotate through them so the oldest eggs are in this certain basket and then there's about two or three ahead of them and I just take and rotate them so the one that's sitting closest to the stove that's always the oldest eggs which is just the suggestion to the people at the stove hey use these eggs these are the oldest and then I'll get them further and further away from the stove so sitting on the little spot next to the mixer are the eggs that are slightly less old than those and then the newest ones are all the way in the back of the pantry which suggests to people don't use these These are brand new and then any eggs that are really dirty that would have to be washed and thus can't be left out at room temperature and also don't make very good Decor because they're ugly because they're so dirty I put them in cartons and put them in the fridge I try to keep up with dating them but I don't always this way I can use the oldest ones for something like hard-boiled eggs because they peel easier usually they do end up being the oldest because we have to clean them before using them which means there's just one little step in between using them and so people typically reach for the easiest thing with using eggs from a homestead we always crack them first into a bowl and then put the egg from the bowl into the the thing that we're cooking into the the big bowl or the dish that I'm making because we have free range chickens which means there's never a guarantee on how old an egg is that you find because it could have been a pile that someone laid a long time ago that were just coming across that doesn't happen very much I will say probably like one in 20 times you get a rotten egg but you definitely don't want that to go into your dish that you're making it is Monday so that means that a lot of fridge clean out happens on this day I find a little quarter of a blender worth of smoothies so I'm just going to pour that and sip on it or give it to somebody else to sip I'm also feeding my sourdough starters that I can make bread either this afternoon or in the morning depending on when I get to it I need to get those yeast active so that I can have an active week of making more bread a few homemaking tasks throughout the day I'm just taking you around with what usually happens I'm a little bit scattered clean the kitchen tidy up the living room room do a little bit of laundry my son is doing his math here in the room so a lot of times I'll do chores next to the person who needs the most help so that I can go over and check their answer or if they have a question I can help them with that this is what I love about homeschool it Blends so nicely with real life just staying close to the kids and helping them with their learning but also the older ones have a sense of Independence on it they're at the point where they can do most of it themselves they will ask some questions but a lot of it is self-directed and then I also allow a lot of time in room for Creative projects as well that is a big focus of our home school is fostering their interests in a way that they can produce something that they're proud of and excited about the way that laundry works here in our room is I keep Theo Victor me and Luke's close here so all the clothes that go downstairs go in the downstairs basket and I'm using using the crib for storage which you know it's a really beautiful crib it has the curtain so everything's nice and covered up you can't see what's in it so I'm throwing in there my baby wraps my swaddle blankets anything that is extra someone from the school of traditional skills that I'm a part of I have a class on there sent me a blanket from Etsy that has Victor's name on it and it's it makes it even prettier over there and then covers up the sides of the crib so that I can really stuff it with things okay back to the whole fridge kitchen clean out thing we always accumulate a lot of little leftovers and I like to find ways to either combine them or reinvent them for today's case I have a little pot of homemade macaroni and cheese that I also combined with a chicken with cream sauce and then I had some more chicken from a whole chicken that we made and picked off the bone in the other 9x13 dish and then I had a bowl of shredded homemade gouda so I'm going combining those three things to make a creamy chicken pasta since the 9x13 leftovers had some broth and fat from the chicken that really helps the pasta dish to not burn when cooking it if you don't have any additional moisture and you're trying to heat up a pasta dish I always add some milk or water because you need that additional liquid but the broth worked perfect in this case and then I had some chicken that I got from my sisters yesterday we go to my parents a lot of times on a Sunday and my sister has chicken on her farm so I picked up a couple of them I put them in the fridge last night and then I let them sit out this morning to thaw out just a little bit more before getting them in the oven they will probably not be quite ready at lunch time but I figure if somebody doesn't get full from the rest of the iron corn puff pancake with apples or the chicken pasta dish that I threw together then by about you know shortly after lunch time the chickens will also be done the reason I'm making two at once is just to kill two birds with one stone we can have one for dinner and then I can pick the bones and we can use that for another chicken dish that's really easy to throw together throughout the week so I'm gonna get two of those going and then it's back to the fridge to grab a few more things that I need to use up before restocking and replenishing with any groceries I really like to clean everything out before getting anything new I have a batch of homemade ricotta that I need to finish using up also a little jar of egg yolks some of it's whole eggs and the reason for that is my daughter was separating eggs for something a few days ago I can't remember what it was oh it was a pudding and she got a few where the egg yolks kind of fell apart and she couldn't get the egg whites out and so anyways those just need to get used and then I also had a partial can of pumpkin my daughter made pumpkin muffins this morning so I'm combining all of those things into a pump can spice ice cream we got the ricotta the eggs the pumpkin some cream some milk I'm gonna do a little bit of pumpkin spice some sugar of course vanilla usually what I'll do is I will just taste it to see if it's at the ideal sweetness but this is a perfect example of how I like to use up things that you know aren't necessarily a recipe but just take a lot of little things and combine them in some new way that maybe otherwise would have been forgotten or not been used this is one of the most important skills that you can practice over time in the home economy you can get good deals on groceries all you want but if you don't use them of course that is money wasted so it's important to keep your inventory so that you always have something to make but then also not so much that you don't end up using it it can be a fine balance and difficult to figure out at first but the longer that you're a homemaker and you can see the connections on what it takes to make something you're able to look into the pantry look into the fridge see what you have and not need to plug it into some kind of recipe but just know the basic mechanics of how to make a pie how to make ice cream how to make a casserole you get comfortable with which things go with other things what spices fit with something or a dozen different ways you can use up eggs or a bushel of apples you have an arsenal of ideas in your mind so that whenever presented with something you always know how to turn it into something useful once you've practiced cooking over a lot of years it makes this whole process a lot easier and helps you to know how much you need to keep it's a fine balance between having enough so that you don't have to go order takeout being prepared for a quick meal making too much making too little it really all just does take practice like I say a lot homemaking is a skill and it comes with time and it's worth building up those skills because because it's a valuable asset to your home whenever you stay home there is value added there with all of the ways that you can stretch what you have and make something beautiful out of something that maybe otherwise looks like nothing I love that most of our school can be done outside right now it's the perfect weather to sit on the porch and read or sit in the back patio area and work on math and whatever else Luke and the boys are doing right now we just tag team stuff A lot of times and Monday is a heavy homemaking day which is why I'm taking you along on this particular day some days don't require quite as much work around the home there's always some tasks to remain consistent and keep everything in order but Monday's heavier because we're really busy on Saturday and Sunday we're not home a whole lot and so a lot of things get neglected and I need to bring it all back together I shared a video a few I guess it was a few months ago now where I just did Monday morning homemaking where I just show you how I bring everything back together after not being in our home for several days you really pay for it in a way that's why I like to stay home pretty much exclusively Monday through Thursday and get everything done and then we're a little bit more relaxed on the weekends but when you have a lot of activities outside the home seven days a week it's nearly impossible to stay up on the laundry the dishes keeping fresh bread going or meal planning all of that requires home it requires you to make a priority of being home more often than then not I just pulled the brioche dough out of the refrigerator that I started three days ago and at the beginning of this video it's been sitting in the fridge all that time I divided it in half because this is going to make two separate loaves of this Rosemary garlic brioche I'm mixing up in my bowl a couple tablespoons of chopped fresh Rosemary a couple cloves of garlic minced and about four tablespoons of softened butter and a little bit of salt this is going to be made just like I make my babka only with this filling the pumpkin spice ice cream is churning quite nicely it's going to be very enjoyable now for this brioche I'm going to lightly dust the countertop with some flour roll these out into large rectangles and then spread it with the filling before rolling it up and making it into the loaves now I do want to point out that I believe I used too much flour or in this situation the dough actually felt pretty glossy and smooth and so I don't think I needed it after it was baked it sort of pulled apart where I had folded it so when I say lightly dust it very lightly dust it and if it's possible for you to roll it out with no flour at all that would actually be a lot better to make this dough smooth and glossy in the mixer you just have to mix it a really long time with the dough hook I walked away from my mixer for probably like 30 minutes and it made a very nice glossy dough even after being in the fridge for three days after rolling it up I cut it down the middle and then twist the two sides together just like I did with the blueberry bob cut and the chocolate babka it's a really great way to incorporate whatever filling you want throughout it because the dough is flattened then spread with it then rolled then Twisted the flavor gets nicely Incorporated everywhere I'm just going to get this in a bread loaf pan and then repeat with the other half of the dough get it in a bread pan and then top it with a damp tea towel so that no air Gets In You could also do beeswax wraps foil or plastic wrap and then let that rise until it's just about doubled in a warm spot this could take only an hour or two if your kitchen's a bit cooler it might take even longer if it's taking too long and you want to pause it until another meal you can at any point throughout that second Rise put it in the fridge it'll rise slowly in the fridge or you can pull it back out of the fridge and let it rise a bit more later all of those are options with this now we're going to have it with our dinner we'll do some of that roasted chicken maybe some veggies some fermented vegetables like sauerkraut or fermented Peppers we're eating our meals outside I really like this obviously for the mess it's a bit of a hassle to bring everything out but our kitchen is very close to our back patio area where we have the seating I really like it because with a bunch of little boys and we're just not very organized enough to keep up with sippy cups and Lids there are milk spills pretty darn often and so for that to happen outside is much better than happening inside of course after lunchtime we all helped to clean up the kitchen bring everything in and then it's nap time for our toddler also Victor is going to get back in the wrap but before I do that I'm going to change his diaper and put him in a fresh outfit because I noticed that there was some stuff on the back of his onesie with wearing a baby all day they get messy like I spill food on him sometimes whenever I'm wearing him while eating so I'm putting on the outfit that Sally baby sent me the cozy little basil outfit we are going to do a few decorating tasks this afternoon a lot of times during afternoon nap time I sit down and do some computer work but I'm just gonna keep on with the homemaking I'm feeling in the homemaking Vibes right now especially with how nice it is outside the boys are going to stay outside during all of nap the older kids of course the toddler sleeping then the older kids finish up a lot of their schoolwork during nap time so we're going to work on putting together yet another flower arrangement and then some of the art that I collected recently I'll tell you about that and then I'm going to test out some fabric on the windows in the kitchen this isn't something I've 100 made my mind up on but I just need to get started with the process instead of just thinking about it this year I have made so many unique flower arrangements because we have such a diverse Garden I've done so many different combinations I've been taking pictures of each one with my phone so that I can look at them throughout the winter and remember what it was like to be in beautiful summer and then I've also been documenting it a lot here on my channel pretty much every summer homemaking video has some unique flower range with some different combination that I can just go out and be creative and see what looks pretty together also seasoning different things Bloom and so it's always something unique and different today I'm doing two different kinds of roses because that's what we have some morning glories which I don't know when they decided to start blooming zinnias some straw flowers some other things that I don't even know what they're called some Cosmo summer flower arranging just seriously never gets old for me [Music] thank you [Applause] for today's afternoon espresso I'm doing half cream half milk a shot of espresso maple syrup and pumpkin spice some ice I'm going to shake that all up and make my own quick little pumpkin spice latte I say quick because maybe adding some vanilla protein powder or some actual canned pumpkin or homemade pumpkin puree that would all be really good but I don't really feel like I have the time for it because I want to get to a few other things I'm going to pull these chickens out of the oven for now it's not quite dinner time but I don't want them to overcook so I'm just gonna get them out and then warm them back up I'm ready to eat dinner bake these brioche because they're nice and fluffy and now let's talk about some of my recent art finds I have been really wanting to add art all throughout this Farmhouse I've collected quite a few pieces I have a beautiful painting upstairs that's really large that I really love I have several just throughout the house but I want a lot more because every time I get a piece up I always really end up liking how it looks even if I question the piece itself whenever I first see it that's one thing I'm noticing is that I question it but then once it's up I think it looks so pretty it adds detail and looks collected I find that when I'm scrolling around Pinterest or looking through design books that I always really love the homes and I'm drawn to the homes that have a lot of framed vintage and antique art pieces whether it's just one Standalone piece or stacked pieces or a gallery wall so I'm just going around the house with a few of these pieces to see where I think they might work some places I thought might work I can clearly see that they're not going to fit or they're not going to look right I'm really trying to not second guess myself so much when I see something that I think is really pretty and just grab it when I'm at an antique shop whether it's a painting or a pencil drawing I do prints as well but I really like whenever it's an original piece I have a watercolor there in the background from my friend Sarah from briarton farm and then I'm gonna hang here right by the French doors in the little entryway area that has our wood stove a framed flower oil painting I'm centering it if the door were open the French door not on the entire wall because for the most part it's open and that's the view that I like to see coming down the stairs I think of my house a lot of times in views from different angles and how they look when looking through doorways from one room to the next something can catch your eye from a room over and it can be for that view alone that I want a certain painting or drawing in a certain area so I think of these things and I'm actually hanging them all up with Command hooks so that way I can get used to them where they are and then maybe make a more permanent decision even though it's just a screw in the wall like I can always move it but it's a quick way to do it without getting any power tools and then also I can quickly change it if I want it in another spot so I think that'll be another process of decorating this home is constantly changing things around I was noticing the other day that the two stacked pieces of Art in the laundry room one's a print and one is more of an original I found them from different places I think that I want to move one of them somewhere else and stack it with another piece where it's more appreciated not just in the bathroom so I'm collecting I'm moving things around I'm always looking at this home with an eye that has more experience in decorating more time working on getting to know this home and all of its character and features more time developing my own style and figuring out what that looks like removing things that don't fit in that I originally maybe thought would and just a general refining process over the years we also hung some brass Cafe rods in the kitchen because I'm gonna try some curtains there I'm not 100 sure how I feel about it but will likely be sewing those together in a future video well thank you so much for joining me for this day of homemaking [Music]
