[Music] three premierships three norm smiths are brownlow dustin martin might just be the best player our game has ever seen and he's not done yet on the field he's a rock star but off it he's remained an intensely private person i get to do a lot of cool stuff in my job but to sit down one on one with dusty is right up there where am i here yep now i just need to make sure i get the first question right let's do it what do you want to talk about whatever you're the man nothing in particular footy whatever matt all right because you don't do many of these do you is there any is there any reason um no i'm just not a massive fan of it get a bit nervous behind the camera for whatever reason but yeah just never really been a massive fan of it so i reckon you've got everyone bluffed i reckon you just like the fact that there's a bit of mistake about you out there and like a bit of mystery keep everyone guessing yeah maybe a little bit off so we're a week out now or a few days out from the start of the season and i know this time of year when i was playing i used to get i used to get really anxious and nervous and and think about just it's a grind it's 22 weeks and then finals and so that would sort of play on my head how do you feel now just on the eve of the season do you get excited or anxious or what's what's he like um to be honest i feel like a little kid again um playing me first game under 12 you know you'd rock up to footy in your full kit boots on and everything um i don't know for whatever reason i just think the older i'm getting the more i'm loving the game um for whatever reason i'm not too sure the boys are nice and fresh being back in melbourne after being away last year so we're all eager to go and yeah just super excited for the season to start so did you not did you not always feel like that before games or before seasons um it's hard to kind of tell um i just i've just noticed lately that i've i'm just really excited and just really loving footy i love getting into training and yeah i'm just really really enjoying the footy i'm sure as footy does it'll have its ups and downs this year but i'm just super excited to get into it you reckon winning has got a fair bit to do with that enjoy yeah and that and that um so what about what about before a game what's your sort of pre-game headspace like i'm pretty calm um there's always nerves and i think it's i think it's good to have nerves but um definitely excitement when you strip it right back it's just it's just the game at the end of the day and as i said earlier if you just go out there and play like you did when you're a young bloke um it's a game designed to be fun so that's my attitude towards it so did last year so if you just take take your mind back so your love of the game's clear it's evident did last year feel different or was your love of the game challenged with everything that was happening and because it was so different um i like to be honest i had moments where i was you know was stuck in the hotel and we couldn't leave but i just kept coming back to how grateful i am that i get to go out there every week and play the game i love so if you just sit in that um space of gratitude and appreciation to be able to do what you love that's that's evolved a lot hasn't that that's really become a bit of a richmond thing yeah we're lucky enough to have some great great people in the club you know emma murray ben crowe we haven't had hugh from the resilience project come in and um yeah that's that's kind of part of who we are so what what were the what were the hardest parts do you think of last year um i don't know probably just not really being able to to do anything like we could pretty much just sit in the hotel um but we made it fun it was just kind of like being on a school camp and you know we we knew that the guys people back in victoria were doing extremely tough so we didn't have it too bad um but yeah it just ended up being like a bit of a school camp and we all loved being around each other like it was just there's so many funny and fun moments it's certain certainly a year that we'll always remember and be uh grateful for how does it rank do you have a favorite flag now after having three after last year or or a favorite norm smith out of the three oh my all of them are just very special in their own unique way i mean last year being away being away from the g you know people like to say we could only win on the g so to be able to be away from home and win some of the games that we did you know over in adelaide against port and you know we're down down at half time against the cats it was just it was a real sense of fulfillment after the year because the way we did it it was just every year's kind of bit we've done it tough um it's obviously not easy to win a flag so yeah they've all just been unique in their own special way obviously your old your man's in in new zealand how hard has it been not having him here to be able to witness those live yeah it's been um a massive challenge but um yeah it is what it is um my dad i love my dad and he's he's made me the man i am today and um i've got full belief that he'll be back here to watch us another when uh another flag so i was gonna say that must that must be a pretty big motivation for you yeah well that's my dream to be able to have uh have the old man up there with the rest of my family and watch the tigers with another with another fake there's no reason to think that you guys can't actually do that and and realize that dream for you what's it going to take for for someone to derail you and the tigers um i don't know i mean like uh every year as you said every club's going out there to win the premiership um but we'll just focus on what we can control and what we do and i think that's why we've been so successful we just stay in our lane and um bring our best stuff was there a time sort of back you know five years ago at the start of your career when you thought you'd you'd never win one let alone playing a grand final did you have those swords yeah for sure it's it's just it was just weird how quick it all kind of happened i think when you take away the focus from the outcome i think if you just come back to enjoying the moment and enjoying the journey which we have done really well probably since the end of 2016 whatever happens happens you know instead of focusing so much on the outcome which maybe we did in the past just getting back to enjoying the journey and i think you're seeing the way we play we play with such enjoyment and then obviously the the premierships are um special as well timmy sort of ranked it as as al almost his favorite because of the the closeness of the game and the fact that you guys had such a challenging year but but everyone had a challenging year every team in the com but because it was such a close game and and you came from behind and all of those things he he rated it as as his his sort of favorite what were your emotions in the room at at half time what were you thinking um well there's a lot that goes through your mind during a game um i can't really remember at half time but i just knew if we just stayed calm we've been in that position before where we're down down at half time and we've proved that we can finish strong so that was a messaging just stick to what we're doing stick to the process and you know again not worry about the outcome and just the grit that we showed to be able to come back it was um yeah to be honest it was it was a very special uh special one last year so not long before half time in in the granny i think a lot of us were probably sitting at home and and thinking gee long geelong have got them here they've they've got control of this game it looks like you know richmond's run might come to an end and then as you've done over the past few years you you're bobbed up and you and you kicked the goal and could you sense just before half time that you know this next five minutes was going to be really important because you you look like you just you just crave those massive moments um oh it's it's very hard like footy's such a random game it can be such a random game you can't really plan what's going to happen but you know i think a bit like the game uh that night we kind of we started a bit slow and we just built and i just knew if i just kept calm and just kept being ready for the opportunity when my chance came um i was gonna take it so is that is that what you're feeling are you just feeling calm or are you feeling i've gotta i've gotta crank it up here i've gotta take my game to another gear um i try and always think if we're behind that yeah you gotta you've got to do something but i i don't think it means you have to do a big outrageous act because sometimes that takes you away from what you should be doing for the team so as i said you just play your role and then um if it comes my way i'll just try and do my thing like we know we know you're a great player but what's separated you from a lot of other players that have been great players is in those massive moments you've just found a way to go to another level and i know you said you feel really calm but do you feel within yourself in those moments that if i if i if i get on a roll here if i get cranking that no one can go with me do you just feel do you feel unstoppable out there oh i've got a lot of self belief and i i um i just that's what you play the game for to be in those pressure moments i remember i've been practicing stuff like that in the backyard when i was five and six i just that's why you play the game for those big moments and to step up um when your team needs you and i just yeah i just love it did did you practice being anyone in particular mate i was actually a big saints fan um oh he's not you're not gonna say i um i loved robert harvey oh gosh i love obviously love yourself but yeah yeah yeah just like that big lenny hayes yeah lenny hayes uh i remember when you got drafted you you said yeah um yeah yeah my manager at the time you know a young kid from the bush yeah he's like look if you get asked this just say this i remember i said play a bit like joel so and lenny hayes with better skills and i remember playing against the saints that year and they sure let me know about it um but yeah they're both he's a superstar anyhow lenny hayes as is joel salwood but yeah um aussie jones stewie low yeah uh the g train fraser gary yeah i love going to watch him play um so yeah i was and the paddock as a young bloke mighty finally you could play for the team you used to go for saints saints model we might have got across the line you know nine and ten and the winner of the north smith medal is number four again [Music] so the setup is complete it took a lot longer than design powerful kick from it's a cracker what about that so lee matthews who's a lot of people say is the best player in the history of the game did you hear his comments about you um i remind you so he said you're the only player that when they compare the two of you he doesn't get offended by um yeah i mean it's extremely humbling to hear these things from people but that's just their opinion and i try not to get too caught up in people's opinions whether it be positive or negative i just always come back to what what i can control do you think you you will ever reflect on that or do you take moments now while you're still playing to just look back at the last four years and almost pinch yourself at times it's funny live moved so fast um i think it is super important to sit down and reflect on those things i remember i was on the goldie after the grand final probably three weeks after the game was obviously been a big couple of weeks celebrating i just went and sat out on on the balcony where i was and yeah just took a moment to reflect on it and bring a few people from the club send out a few texts um so yeah i think it is really special to reflect um what do you say in those texts what are you what are you thinking and saying to your teammates oh just like can you believe it like just there's just a lot of love um yeah it's just thanking certain people and just reaching out to teammates just saying can you believe what we just did like how special was that we spoke to jack about this last week and he actually proactively goes out and gets the remote hits you know hits play so he's got him recorded and he wants to go and you know satisfy his ego as he as he loves doing but do you do that or if it's on you might just sit down and watch it i actually hadn't watched any of the um grand finals till end of last year i hadn't watched 17 i heard much i remember sitting out at a mate's farm where i was staying and um they had them on fox footy they had them like saved and i was like once i'm gonna chuck them on and yeah it just fills you with a great sense of pride and um yeah i'm looking forward to the journey again to give it another give it another go what about leadership uh do you see yourself as a leader within the richmond football club um yeah i think i've got a different um type of leadership i guess and i guess as you get older and more mature um and you're kind of more confident in who you are you become um a bit of a i don't know more stronger leader but yeah i just yeah i do see myself as a leader at the footy football club so i was i was really fortunate a couple weeks ago to be able to come out at quarter time and three quarter time of of the richmond huddle and there were two things that surprised me one was that your coach would go out of his way to sledge me yeah at quarter time and say that you jack was playing weak as piss football just like his cousin and you turned around and got a good old chuckle but the other thing that surprised me was how vocal you were you know what clearly stood out with your voice and your instruction and and you're demanding um of your teammates that's what sort of resonated with me and i think a lot of people externally or or that don't have that inner sanctum access would because you are a quiet person and you shy away from the spotlight at times would would associate that with you but has that grown over the last few years as your you become more confident with your game yeah and i think as i said the older i come and i just i just love winning so and i love helping the team win so if i can and obviously see the game pretty well so yeah i'm just really enjoying um helping the other guys out i suppose i want to play something for you here so we we spoke to jack and dimmer last week and uh we're reflecting on the the grand final from last year and the journey over the last few years and and jack had this to say i'm really proud of of who he's become the growth in him as a person um and as a mate like i couldn't be more i couldn't be more proud of what he's done and i think it's reflective on who we're gonna see going forward as well i think we're gonna see a much more mature player um i think we're going to see the sky really is the limit and i hope i hope he continues to and i know that he will value how important he is from a from a vice captain's point of view from a captain's point of view and from a coach's point of view how much we actually lean on him and i think he starts to get a bit of a grasp of of how important he is not only as a player but nearly as a cultural figure of richmond the key to his success is um inner belief and the fact that he is happy to be unique uh and he knows what he's good at he knows what he's good at he doesn't focus or dwell on the the deficiencies of his deficiencies of his game which there really isn't many but he knows what he's good at and he knows when to impact and he's just he will he will get everything he deserves post-footy with the accolades and he's a he's a he's a great person and a great leader so there's a bit there's a bit in there how does it make you feel yeah yeah it's uh it makes me a little bit emotional i love jack and to be honest i just i love the footy club and i love everyone in there like i just love going in there the culture that we've got at the footy club from um you know the top down it's just it's a really special place to be and i'm you know beyond grateful to be a part of that so he spoke about a few things so one one being that the impact that you have on the rest of the group so in those big moments where you do the amazing things that you do clearly that helps your team win because you're playing great footy but they actually grow a leg are you do you feel that when you're out there when you go and do something special and the boys get around you that they've they've grown taller because of it yeah a little bit and you know trent's the same the way he plays the game i see trent do some of the acts that he does and it gets me up so yeah if i can you know and again that's probably my leadership style is probably actions on the footy field um so yeah i'll just try and do that yeah the other thing you can yeah the other thing jack spoke about was and he's put a bit of pressure on you mate he reckons you know like the sky's the limit so if you haven't reached the sky already he reckons you've got more in you do you feel like you you've still got some of your best footy in front of you yeah definitely as i said like i've never loved the game more than i do now and i'm just obsessed with the the process behind being an athlete and being the best athlete and person that i can be so as i said i feel like a little kid and there is going to be ups and downs along the way but i'm just i'm super excited to continue the journey with the rest of the rest of my teammates and the growth that he spoke about as well so if you could if you could pin it down to sort of a moment or um an encounter with someone do you do you sort of look back at one moment and think that's when it sort of turned for me that's when i discovered this real love for the game and i was able to tap into something that i hadn't before um not not one moment there's probably just you know life can go up and down and i think um i've just found a better balance um in my life where i can um show up and be the best person i can be you know probably took me a lot longer to grow up um than everyone else and you know you know the first part of your career you're just happy to be on an afl list and go out and muck around um but yeah i guess it just comes with age i just thought i've got a really good opportunity here i don't want to have any regrets when i get to the end of my career um so yeah i'm just making sure i'm putting my best foot forward to get the most out of it so that that balance that you're speaking about what does that look like what what are what are the some of the things in your life if you're happy to share that that have provided that balance for you um probably going out less yeah no just bit everything it can be yeah like you don't to party too hard because it might take away some energy to be at your best not just on a football sense but be the best in your life like um you know if you're going out too much i don't have the energy to be able to be the best leader at the footy club so yeah it's a bit of that and just i don't know just finding things that work for me and things that finding things that um make me happy because you from what i've what i've been told by you know some of your um teammates and you know your friends that you you become sort of much more into the the mindfulness space um and the wellness side of the game as well not not just you know going out and getting a kick yeah well i think it's more it's just as much a mental game as it is a physical physical game so i've put a lot of work into the mental side of the side of the game um i've had great mentors in emma murray and ben crowe they've helped me a lot and so it's something that i value a lot and i think it's really important um you know it's just as important to look after your mental side of your game as it is your physical and um that can keep you young everyone raves about emma murray you know i've met emma um aware of her work what what do you do specifically with her um what do you focus on just focus on um kind of bringing your just becoming calm and coming back to what makes me great i suppose and not worrying about anything any other distractions outside of the outside of the footy field i suppose there's so many things that can go on in your head but um when you just come back into the moment yeah that's when you play your best footy yoga yeah um i've got a good friend who does some yoga with me that's that's great um everything like even jumping down the ocean down at the brighton bars um you know i find that um likes a form of meditation a bit of extra boxing here and there just all these little things that can help you stay clear in the head what about away from the game you got a place in the country yeah um how often do you do you get up there is that sort of a mid-year thing middle of the season thing uh just as much as i can whenever i get a little break just get down there and yeah it's awesome it's funny i used to hate getting back into the country um but i've kind of done a bit of a 180 and i just really enjoy getting back out there and enjoying the simple country life i was getting around in the uh cowboy hat the other day so um that was good fun what do you like to do away from the game so when you are in in the grind of a season how do you you know if you can't get to the country what is what does an escape look like for you oh during the season as i said it's just little things like getting down the beach for a swim jumping in the steam room i think it's um important to socialize as well you don't want to be too much work yeah not enough play so again just finding that balance i'm a bit of a hack of a golfer but i want to try and get back into that a few years ago i was playing once a week and it's really good leave the phone in the car and just yeah just little things like that a lot of people say they're they're not footy heads and like that like that's a fashionable or cool thing to say do you watch a lot of footy during the season i was probably one of those blokes who like it was uncool to watch footy so i was like i hate watching footy but as i said the older i'm getting the more i'm more i love watching the footy i've been really getting into the um our girls side yep um it's good to see them have their first win the other week um so i wouldn't say i watch it all the time but i've definitely got a bit more of an interest in it do you have a favorite player yeah ally mckenzie she's a number one pick she um she's a jet what about after footy what does what do you think life looks like for you do you have do you have sort of any idea do you have any aspirations anything you want to get into when you finish playing i don't know it's um yeah it's a tricky question and something that you get asked a lot and again i'm still trying to find my way and what other passions i've got outside of the game um so yeah i'll just i'll just keep playing around with different things and i'm sure that something will come to me at the right time your coach has been obviously a huge impact on you on you as well another one of you you're great mentors what about his gifts can you give us a bit of an insight because it's like we're all from the outside we hear about these these themes and these gifts that he he does every week can you have you got a favorite of of the last few years that he's well there's been that many i can't really remember which one would be my favorite but no that's that's something yeah it's something really special that um makes all us boys um we really enjoy the gifts and he's got always got a story behind it he puts a lot of time and effort in it into it um you know we always wear he might give us his shirt um like for example won one game he had we had a dennis rodman shirt because he was so great at defense and you know after the game we have a win and we're all getting around in our rodman shirt it's like it's something that we really value and appreciate all the effort that he puts into it yeah that's awesome mate well thank you so much for for sitting down with me um i know you know there are going to be a lot of people out here that are going to take a lot away from what you've given us today um is there anything you want to get off your chest mode or that you want to ask me that we haven't covered um i've seen i've seen you riding around brightening your uh pick like of like um that is you isn't it yeah he got me yeah yeah oh thanks for bringing that up enjoyed it mate thanks man thanks darcy appreciate it [Music] you
