Dudgeon: A documentary on one of the world's largest offshore wind farms

[Music] [Music] it's windy and you understand why we're building wind farms outside the coast of Norfolk a few years back we developed Sheringham show some 20 kilometers from shore in UK now we have taken one step further offshore the document project is the construction of sixty seven six megawatts turbines outside the coast of Norfolk it's about 40 kilometers from shore and it's coming ashore Heron way born where it's moving further towards Nathan it's a 47 kilometer long cable the turbines are fixed to the seabed by solid foundations this is one of the 67 mono paths for the dudgeon project they're the biggest ones of these mono paths are over thousand tons and over 70 metres long in spring and summer 2016 the foundations were installed [Music] the power generated by the turbines are gathered and transformed by an offshore substation this was constructed locally in Lowestoft [Music] [Music] [Applause] helped unsafe device this this social operation has been a success as the rest of the foundation installation has been with the SHL part of the project so that's very good [Music] this is where we're building the onshore substation this is where the power from durjan that's being transferred to the National Grid and the existing overhead lines and by the river year in Great Yarmouth we've established a new operation centre and base in what used to be an old paper storage [Music] [Music] we had come together to name our vessel Xbox Nord [Music] the dungeon project is one of the top 10 wind farms in the world and also in particularly it's the second one that we've been developing after sharing him shoul estado has a skill set which is perfect for offshore wind we have marine operations international supply chain and we use much of the oil and gas industry expertise actually in wind farms themselves as well so it's very competitive for us as a large operator in oil and gas well we've just started the very first load for Duchin and we set the target for 2nd of January 2070 in more than four years ago and it was spot on it's not just the first load out for Duchin it's also the very first load out from this new site here in hull [Music] over 18 months the project had about 4000 vessel days one by one the turbines were installed and started producing the brand-new service operating vessel s vac nerdz is operating the field with a walk to work solution due to the distance of shore we had to come up with something else than day in and out travels every day the solution to that was the rock Nord or a service operation vessel that stays out there for 14 days and come in for replenishment and those all together now dozen offshore windfarm is ready to power more than 400,000 UK households and everything is controlled from our operation center in Great Yarmouth the control room is set up to monitor the wind farm 24 hours a day seven days a week we motto all the safety systems on offshore we also monitor their vessels and the radio communications as well just to make sure that everybody's safe we have now recruited everyone that is supposed to be here for sale operations 28 local people have been employed and we have approximately 70 contractors also mostly from the UK it has been quite amazing and also an experience for a lot of new people coming into the project and gradually be employed taking over equipment learning everything and then now in full operations hopefully we can do more on this in the future in a successful project there needs to be a successful cooperation and in Sturgeon we've had a successful cooperation with UK government and our partners start often Muslim [Music] we delivered on time on the fifteenth of October we are the ultimate milestone with that official handover to operations on that day 67 turbines produced at the capacity and the form delivered 402 megawatts cost-wise has been very good we delivered significantly lower than the budget and at last late last but not least we delivered the project without any serious injuries to the person [Music] so after a hectic installation and construction period of three years there's now 25 years of operation in Dutch in the UK [Applause] [Music] you [Music]
