Drupal 8 Site Building, Lesson 16: Add Fields to User Profiles

I'm assuming you're on this page from the last video if you're not click on configuration and account settings and let's click on manage fields here are the fields that are added to our user profile and right now it's just a picture but we want to collect a first-name because later on we're going to set up a whole FAQ section for our website and we'll want to show a user picture and first name as the author for each of those articles click Add field select a field type of just plain text and let's call it first name the machine name will be field underscore first name click Save and continue the maximum length and allowed values will leave us the same click Save and if we require this field it's going to show up on the user registration system let's go ahead and do that and click Save Settings now we've just required a first name field and that might make people a little bit jittery click on manage display click Edit on the first name field and let's put some help text in here your first name will only be used when you leave comments on on hotels and that should help people a little bit let's check out what we just did so go back to the site and log out and click login and create new account now when I create a new account I'm asked for an email address a username I have the ability to upload a picture and my first name is now required and the help text I put in here of course is badly spelled your first name will lonely be sued I probably should fix that before anybody actually registers on my site well pretty simple to do I need to log back in go back to configuration account settings let's manage the fields and edit the first name field thank you to autocorrect I left that in the video just so you can see how easy it is to fix this when you make a mistake click Save Settings and that should be all fixed now we're going to use this new field and the user profile system in a complex view later on
