Drum Teacher Reaction: Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai / Cover by Yoyoka, 10 year old

andy i'm a 30-year audio engineer veteran now retired love the channel by the way having recorded my fair share of musicians 30 years yeah and worked with some of the best drummers both here in nyc and around the world i am totally enamored with yuyoko soma she is one of the best bugger players i've ever seen and that's not coming from a novice or someone who doesn't understand drumming and its many facets and techniques one video you have not reacted to is yoga playing a broken purty shuffle i say broken because she goes in and out of it with ease the video i will link you to also shows her incredible control of her left hand on ghost notes incredible short but precise fails and all the while staying perfectly in the pocket it is rare to find a drummer who can play this type of shuffle properly that's true as miss soma does with such relaxed ease and authority the song is virtual insanity to murakoi thanks for your channel john levesor well john thank you so much for the donation to the channel and the request i cannot wait to get into this obviously we've already had a heap of yoyoka videos on the channel this one has been requested a lot uh virtual insanity might have been cosmic girl i'm not sure if she did that one as well i do remember a miracoi cover that she did where a lot of people were commenting and requesting it so i'm really glad to get back onto a yoyoka video and in particular a jamiroquai cover jamiroquoi pretty phenomenal uh british i think there are uk based what how would you describe them like acid jazzy funky the musicianship in jamiroquoi was absolutely top-notch so it's a lot to chew off taking on a jamiroquoi cover so with that said let's check it out right i'm actually just going to go ahead and check yes i am subscribed double check that i'm subscribed to your york i'm already going to give her a like and uh let's edit [Music] socks [Music] [Music] the groove here really reminds me of sunday morning by maroon 5 which i've done a cover of by the way you can check that out really reminds me of that it is actually straight eights so far on the hi-hats swung sixteenth notes now people can get a little bit confused with this straight eighth notes one and two and three and four and sixteenth notes would normally count those one e and r two e and uh and on and on but you can swing them one e antler two e anta but you know that kind of deal swung sixteenths and uh beautiful pocket as we come to expect with yoyo how old is this video by the way 2020 okay february 2020 i'm not sure how old she was then but i mean always always impressive [Music] [Music] and now [Music] and i just can't see [Music] [Music] okay i think that is the main bit that john was talking about in terms of going in and out of the shuffle and you know living in that 16th note triplet subdivision let's just back that up i mean we're going to get another chorus anyway but i'm just going to back it up a lot of middle triplet bernard pretty purty shuffle jeff picard rosanna bernapurti on was it home at last uh various other ones and of course john bonham fall in the rain yeah those are the ones to check out for a just a terrific half time shuffle [Music] those tom hats man she's not kidding around [Music] [Music] keep an eye on her right foot here in a nice little red socks it's really hard to swing 16th notes on a single kick at this tempo and keep the degree of swing the degree of shuffle even keep an eye on an air on the right foot shuffle that she's got going on here deceptively hard if you think this is easy record it and have a listen back and it can just sound horrendous it can sound like a big mess so difficult to lay down nice even eighth notes on the right hand whilst shuffling and putting two notes very close together on the sixteenth note swung grid and keeping that degree of swing the same and even inconsistent [Music] scary [Music] [Music] ghosts [Music] [Music] what a song too what a band miroquoi [Music] top [Music] shrimp [Music] we're gonna get a i'm ready are we doing it or are you going to leave me hanging yes i knew it awesome yeah so jamiroquoi as i said a really slick really really slick group very very hard song to kind try and bury um i believe she's not doing a moises thing and taking out drums i believe she's literally just playing over the top of the entire full track with drums at full volume um incredibly hard to bury because what we've got is we've got a swing feel but there are degrees of swing and the degrees of swing like bottoms swing or buddy rich's level of swing or this person's level swing everyone's going to have their unique feel and it's hard to just land on that i mean coming back to the sunday morning drum cover i did i had to work on that probably more than most songs i've done because i knew to get a good cover of that to get a good berry on the track it's going to be really difficult to capture that particular drummer's swing feel on that day so yoga did a terrific job lots of middle triplet ghost stuff double time you know going to the 16th note triplets on the hi-hats and the fills the way she smacks out those tom fills sounds like a million dollars loads of authority and um and great tone you know her recordings are always really top-notch as well got a bit of tom envy on those uh sounds there and um yeah just i mean add it to the list add it to our yoyo video list of just mind-blowing uh drum covers from this sensational young drummer john livercier thank you so much for that awesome pack and the and the info on yourself it's
