[Music] foreign [Music] aboard a southern class 313 emu for a driver's eye view cab Rider from Seaford to Brighton I would like to say a big thank you to my contributor for allowing me to use this footage the video is slightly pixelated and choppy in a couple of places on route but hopefully it won't spoil your enjoyment if you would prefer this video without my commentary I will link that version in the description below our service today will be calling at all stations to Brighton where currently departing Seaford on the Seaford single line and our speed limit is 15 miles an hour raising to 70 at the end of the platform foreign [Music] the single line section that we are now traversing between Seaford and New Haven Harbor is one of only a handful of single line further out routes in the UK from the track bed and over Bridges it's clear to see where a second line used to run the line was single tracked in 1975 to reduce costs interestingly enough despite having only one platform cephas platform is signed as platform 2. [Music] our first station on the route is bishopstone opened in 1938 it was built as a replacement to the bishopstone beach station that we will pass through in a few moments the art deco station building to our right was inspired by the designs of architect Charles Holden and in particular Anna's Grove Tube Station [Music] [Music] our line is now on a falling gradient as New Haven Harbor comes into view ahead of us [Music] foreign [Music] platforms of the aforementioned Bishop Stone Beach halt station opened with the line in 1864 it was primarily built to serve the hundred or so workers employed at the nearby tide Mills the closure of the mill in 1883 the station's main footfalls holiday traffic originally opened as bishopstone the station's name was changed to Bishop stonehall in 1922 and to bishopstone beach hooked in 1938 when the newer station at bishopstone opened the end of the station's life came in 1942 when the Royal Navy took over the harbor in its Heyday there was a signal box here and a freight Branch to the mill served by locomotives of the New Haven Harbor company our train slows for the 20 mile an hour speed restriction across the junction the lines coming in from our left serve the New Haven Marine Aggregates terminal as well as a turnback facility for late running trains officially closed in 2020 the dish used platforms of the former New Haven Marine station are located 700 yards past the junction on the Marine branch New Haven Marine was originally called New Haven Harbor boat station and served cross-channel passengers arriving on boat trains boat trains seized in 1984 and the station's decline begun in 2006 the station was close to the public over health and safety concerns with official closure following in 2020 we are now at New Haven Harbor Station one of the original stations opening with the line in 1847. it was originally named New Haven Wharf but changed to New Haven Harbor in 1886 when the aforementioned boat terminal station opened [Music] [Music] foreign foreign New Haven Town opened in 1847 and pre-pandemic saw around 250 000 passengers a year despite the previous station being called New Haven Harbor New Haven town is now the closest station to access the twice daily cross-channel ferry service to the app foreign [Music] the signal box to our right has recently been demolished with signaling for the whole area taken over by the free bridges rail operations center New Haven town yard to our left is well used these days and often sees multiple trains a day the terminal sees Aggregates delivered and Ash from the nearby household waste incinerator removed the branch line from Sovereign Junction to New Haven was originally built to serve the busy docks at New Haven and it's good to see Freight traffic thriving on this route once again okay now how God Southeast station dates back to 1906 opened a Southeastern rodmell halt the station was renamed Southeast in May 1980. the station is served by an hourly service in both directions itsford level crossing gives Road access to the nearby itford Farm The Crossing is a miniature red and green type Vehicle drivers must manually operate the barriers and cross only when a green light is shown [Music] [Music] [Music] the yellow triangle sign and accompanying AWS warning give our driver indication of an upcoming change in line speed warning boards are only needed where the line speed drops by a third or more in this case the warning is for a differential speed 40 miles an hour or 70 miles an hour for multiple unit trains the speed applies across the upcoming Glide reach fire duct foreign reached Viaduct takes us across blind reach a tributary of the river ooze [Music] our driver slows the train for the 40 mile an hour speed restriction across Sovereign Junction The Junction marks the end of the Seaford branch and our train joins the up Lewis line part of the east coastway route the lines to our right have come from Willington Junction and Eastbourne [Music] foreign [Music] as we approach Lewis our driver needs a position 1 or position 2 Junction indicator on the signal to continue on the east coastway route if no Junction indicator is illuminated our train will have been routed towards the London bound platforms the signals on the opposite line are provided for shunting and turn back purposes foreign speed drops to just 10 miles an hour as we approach the brighton-bound platforms here at Lewis the lines to our right run via Cook's bridge and Plumpton and join the Brighton main line at keema Junction Lewis station has changed many times over the years most notably in recent times Lewis was the junction with a route known as the wielding line that ran to upfield and onwards to Tunbridge Wells and London the wielding line closed in 1969 after it fell into disrepair following a lack of investment ongoing campaigns to reopen the line have recently been Gathering Pace in what has become known as the Brighton Mainline 2 project foreign foreign foreign foreign departing Lewis we are now on the up East Branch the line starts to climb up through the South Downs from this point on what is known as Falmer Bank this is a long climb reaching its Summit around falma substation trains traveling down the bank are required to conduct a running brake test to check the function of the brake before descending the bank low adhesion can create challenging conditions and further complicate things for trains heading towards Lewis [Music] Tango Lima whiskey 8 signal here at Kingston tunnel marks the end of control by Three Bridges rail Operating Center signaling of our train is transferred across the road to the older Three Bridges area signaling Center thank you we once again Traverse the a27 Lewis bypass this time by means of an over Bridge foreign found a substation to our left marks the summit of our climb the changing gradient clearly noticeable foreign ER opened with this section of the line in 1846 although it was originally located around 53 chains further to the east the current station serves the nearby Falmer Village as well as the University of Sussex campus and the Falmer or Amex Stadium home of Brighton and Hove Albion football club the Footbridge having been widened to accommodate Match Day passengers foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] descending towards more scheme we pass over the a270 Lewis Road by means of hot Troy Viaduct foreign foreign addition to the route most came was opened in 1980 to serve the Brighton suburbs of moscombe and hollingdean it sees three trains an hour to Brighton two coming from Seaford and one from ore via Hastings and Eastbourne [Music] foreign [Music] foreign two hour left you can just about make out the former Junction of the line that used to run to kemptown opening in 1869 the one mile 32 chain route was expensive to construct and required a tunnel and 14 Arch Viaduct the high cost was worth paying for the railway as kemptown was a very affluent area the line was closed during World War One a move that was ultimately to be the death of this line upon reopening a large amount of the railways clientele had swapped to using Brighton's tramways and passenger numbers never returned the line closed passenger traffic in 1932 and Freight traffic in 1971. the last train to travel the route was a special Gala service using a class 206 dmu number 1205 thank you with its staggered platforms London Road marks up an ultimate station [Music] at 370 meters long with 27 arches and approximately 10 million bricks the London Road Viaduct takes us over the city at a maximum height of 20 meters built by engineer John oropefrastrick the grade 2 listed structure took only 10 months to complete during World War II parts of the East and the West End of the viaduct were destroyed in a bombing raid leaving the midsection inaccessible and the tracks hanging in mid-air temporary repair was made and the viaduct was open for traffic not more than 24 hours later with normal services resuming in under a month our driver slows for the 20 miles per hour restriction across Montpelier Junction with its eight platforms Brighton station serves many destinations and routes platforms free to eight are accessible to the east coastway route and the Brighton main line to and from London platforms one to three are accessible by the West coastway route from Shoreham and littlehampton platform 3 is the only platform that Brighton accessible to all routes trains from Brighton are operated by thameslink Southern and Gatwick Express all part of the GTR group in the recent past Great Western Railways Southwest trains and verging cross-country all serve Brighton thank you thank you for traveling with us today my
