[Music] all right today on random ax carving we're going to start on a little bit bigger uh carving than I normally do so um going to use a little bit bigger tools to start out and uh I clamped it into a a big Vie here so I'll should give you shot of it here real [Music] quick kind of kind of get an idea how big it is it's that's probably about uh 2 and 1/2 ft long something like that but uh anyways we're going to try to carve an eagle on there uh hopefully it turns out good all right and we're carving we got a uh nice piece of Driftwood here and uh tried carving it a little bit with a grinder with a uh I don't know what kind of bit it was or grinding wheel was on it um it was made for like scooping out wood for like a chair thing thought it might work good for taking some of this off but uh this piece of wood was a little bit hard for it so got out my little battery chainsaw here and we're just going to use that to remove the uh the big pieces of wood around our carving just kind of following some pencil lines that I put on there drawing around a little bit and uh getting an idea where everything's going without going too deep other than uh just around his around his head and his beak there I cut in a little deeper cuz that's going to be uh pretty deep there uh this piece of wood's about 3 and half in thick maybe 4 in thick in the middle so I have a little bit of wood I can remove here I most could have been making Sam the camel instead of an eagle but uh decided to go with the eagle I really didn't see the uh camel reference there how I uh was watching the video from that angle it kind of looked a little bit like a cam [Music] head once I got it kind of roughed out I switched over to my forom and uh just started rounding stuff off and putting uh the rest of my lines in figuring out where the Beak was going to go still had a lot of wood to remove on the inside of his mouth there but uh wanted to make sure I left enough to get what I needed out [Music] of forom is just just has a big bur on it that's a qu inch Drive I think it's a 3/4 in uh Barrel [Music] may be 5/8 or 3/4 but uh it works pretty good this this like I said this piece of wood was pretty solid so uh it had some really hard spots in it so I was just trying to uh remove remove the wood that I needed removed fast had a loose chunk of wood there on his beak I just dug that out and popped it out of there [Music] it's fun working on a nice big piece of uh Driftwood like this for them was fast but it wasn't as fast as a chainsaw for taking off bigger pieces so [Music] I needed to get down into that beak a couple inches and this was this was the fastest way to do [Music] it I switched over to the Dremel and this was the uh same birs that I use on a lot of the other carvings um flame burs uh Barrel Burrs uh there's that one wheel that I use you'll see here in a few minutes to put some feathers in and and yeah just uh same same tools uh use on small carvings just uh just takes a little [Music] [Music] longer if I would have had a chainsaw with a little dime tip and a short bar I could have got in there and got a lot more of this but uh that long bar I didn't want to take too many big chunks out too [Music] [Music] fast there's the wheel just uh grinding away adding some feathers [Music] going to go back several times over these with different things but uh this was just kind of getting a a direction or way things wanted to I wanted things to go and uh kind of seeing how they were going to look [Music] there we got a bunch of stars to cut out [Music] little finger sander worked real well on the beak shining it up [Music] there [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] e [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] probably should have picked this table up about six or eight inches that was uh leaning over this table for four hours or so and back was a little stiff after that but it was worth it it it uh it was a great carving so putting the shadow lines and the stripes of the flag here just carving down in there about 38 to half an inch something like that a lot of [Music] [Music] places fingers sander to the rescue again just uh taking some of the uh chainsaw marks out of [Music] didn't want it to look like it was cut out of there with the chainsaw I wanted to look like it just was uh coming out of the wood there on its [Music] own [Music] [Music] for [Music] made it down to as far as the micro motor here and uh just taking a little bit of diamond a bit there and putting some uh finer detail in the feathers and cleaning up some uh Corners around the stars and some of the uh Shadow lines around his mouth [Music] there I had asked some people if they wanted uh they thought it would look better painted or just left the way it was and and uh it was kind of unanimous to uh put some paint on it and look antique it so uh that's what we decided to [Music] do [Music] I'm just using acrylic paints this is going to be a hung inside carving so uh not worried about the sun fading into anything where it's going to go [Music] and uh actually uh antiquing it a little bit so it's going to be uh kind of old and Faded when it's done [Music] anyways [Music] think I had almost as much time in uh painting it as I did carving it [Music] starting to look pretty neat there when I started getting a little bit of color on [Music] it [Music] I'm mixing that uh true blue and black together to get this uh midnight blue or navy blue color also leaving the little Bluer end spots and little darker end spots just to given some [Music] contrast that was a [Music] oops [Music] mix a little bit of water in with the white there and let it get down into all those [Music] feathers [Music] [Music] [Music] not trying to do anything f yet just trying to get the main killers on [Music] there [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah it's starting to looks like something now put a little bit of uh blue background on those white stars and just going over it with a uh a black wash actually this here is actually just the uh black mixed with the same red that I used on the red red part of the flag and made kind of a [Music] burgundy here's the black wash here I just mixed a lot of water with the black paint and just kind of went over everything with [Music] it [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] finally getting to paint that eye [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] that's was a lot of lot of fun to carve and it was a lot of fun to paint and uh hope you all were still watching the video and get to see this thing when it's done [Music] and I did uh take and uh took some sandpaper and went around the outside edge of that paint and just kind of Blended that all those edges all into the wood and then uh I think after this video was done I actually carved or uh coated it with a homesman Spar Varnish I went and sanded some of the red sanded some of the white a little bit just to make it look uh little more faded and give it that old antique look but uh Yep this was a fun one to do so uh I'm just going to finish it up here [Music] all right well it feel like Mr Wilson here looking over the fence but uh anyways got this carving done and uh carved America so uh you like this one then uh give me a thumbs up let me know what you think in the comments it's a little bigger than I normally do but uh turned out pretty sweet I had this big slab of wood and want to put something cool on it so here it is so hope you enjoyed the video and uh see you next week thanks
