we have a record from a whoring days the picture's pretty old but that's her madeline madrigal aka malmo levels 1 to 200. ours how'd she get away with it you know how often we get a judge up in peace trees where you got one now hey guys what's happening niat here with film comics explained and today we'll be exploring dread the 2012 feature written by the talented alex garland and directed by pete travis the film stars carl urban as a judge jury and execution known as judge dredd based on the celebrated 2000 ad comics written by john wagner alex garland who would go on to write and direct the intense and thought-provoking ex machina and annihilation began writing the script for dread during post-production of sunshine which he'd also written along with 28 days later both of which were directed by the outstanding danny boyle coming off the back of his work on the 28 days later series which i've extensively covered on this channel and will leave links to below garland had initially come up with a completely different script in these early drafts the story revolved around one of dread's most notorious enemies in the comics known as judge death who was the leader of a sinister group of undead dark judges that had arrived from an alternate dimension known as dead world the film was also going to deconstruct the perception of justice that both the judges from megacity won and the dark judges from dead world had held this incredible adaptation was soon abandoned with garland admitting that it wouldn't work well since most audiences who hadn't read the comics wouldn't have had enough time to absorb the justice system forfeiting that it would perhaps work better as one of the two sequels he had planned on making pending studio approval what followed was a more grounded and focused story that was a blend of a few judge dread storylines including democracy and origins with an unstoppable judiciary machine known as dread that not only matched the ferocious violence of criminals in a city but often surpassed them with his brand of unforgiving justice the film succeeds not only as a faithful adaptation that built upon the source material but also as a reflection of our societies developed desensitivity to violence a point which is exaggerated to full effect through the use of the ingenious hypnotic slo-mo violent scenes that made entry and exit wounds look like avant-garde visual installations in the graphic novels judge joseph dredd was essentially a law enforcement and judiciary agent who worked in the dystopic future city called mega city 1 which covered most of the east of north america and was home to over 800 million citizens who had fled the radiated wastelands of the old world although the hall of justice and its judges used highly advanced technologies in their constant struggle for control over the city the overwhelming 17 000 crimes reported daily in mega city 1 meant that the judges were fighting a losing battle which is why they resorted to such heavy-handed measures in the film we get our first glimpse of dread in action pursuing a group of criminals who had just shot and killed people before driving away highly intoxicated on a new substance called slo-mo which slowed their perception of time to one percent of what was normal their erratic driving and complete disregard for human life lead dread to determine that the only valid course of action for him was to execute them and we see him aggressively bringing them to a stop without hesitation release the hostage unharmed and i guarantee you a sense of life in an iso cube without parole life without parole that's a deal you offered only if you comply negotiation's over what are you doing reporting back to the hall of justice under order from one of the chief judges dredd is soon assigned the task of taking cassandra anderson a telepathic recruit out on her first day of practical training anderson is of course a recurring character in the comics who uses her telepathic powers as a judge to fight criminals in all manner of vermin alongside dread including aliens and predators and i've covered a few of these story arcs which i'll also leave links to below born within a hundred meters of the gigantic radiation boundary walls that surrounded mega city one anderson had lost both her parents to residual fallout cancer the radiation which had killed her parents was also responsible for turning her into a mutant with immense telepathic powers far beyond the range of anything that had been seen before which is why although she had technically failed her preliminary training she'd been inducted as a rookie judge for a trial period rookie anderson sir how many people are observing you two what can you tell me about the person i'm with male another judge i can feel anger and control given that the judges could use her gifts as an asset in their losing war for the city she is given a single day under the direction of dread to pass her final assessment to become a judge who explained the parameters of the conduct and procedures required of her during the day as well as giving her a large list of things that would constitute an automatic fail i also think that a big reason why they were desperate to have her join them was that with the limited options available to the citizens of mega city one they foresaw that she would eventually turn to a life of crime and with her insane telepathic abilities she had the potential to create a lot of trouble in mega city one led by anderson's internal gps the two judges make their way towards the infamous peach trees block which was a large 200-floor arcology housing project in sector 13 in response to a triple homicide that had been reported within the tower essentially a self-contained city within itself the block was home to an excess of 75 000 citizens and was well known for its high rate of both crime and unemployment with the majority of the inhabitants living in slumlike conditions because the judges rarely showed up to stop the crimes occurring in peach trees as a result of the overall high crime rate in mega city one the tower eventually became one of the most corrupt mega city blocks in the city run by the notorious marmark land which were also the group responsible for the manufacture of the new substance known as slomo originally filled with three different gangs that constantly fought for power over the block named the peyote kings red dragons and the judged peach trees was eventually taken by madeleine madrigal and her ruthless gang who commandeered the top floor of the block by force and made their way down running the tower just like a prison with mama's warden and her clan serving as the guards dominion over peachtrees gave madeline the ability to exercise judgment deliberation and sentencing similar to the code and procedures used by the judges and much like the judges who used violence as a means of control so too did mama who is just as cold and angry as judge dredd both judges then arrive at peachtrees and enter the structure to find the bodies of men who had been skinned slow mode and thrown off the top floors as a message from mama to the people below realizing the immense task they had ahead of them after getting briefed by the soul medic who lived and worked in the block dredd and the rookie make their way up the gigantic tower and used anderson's gifts to find one of mama's men named kay who was responsible for the triple homicide placing him under arrest with the intention of taking him into the hall of justice for interrogation their plans are soon cut short with mama closing down the block preventing the judges from transmitting a request for backup the queen of peachtrees also requested that the people of her city helped her in exterminating the judges forcing dred and anderson to make their way through thousands of citizens and hundreds of criminals what follows is an intense and often mesmerizing ultra violent look at the day in the life of dread in his mission to deliver justice and restore order to a city on the brink of chaos with both dread and anderson taking on insurmountable odds aided only by their law givers which were the standard pistols carried by the judges this multi-functioning killing machine which could only be activated by the dna of the judges assigned to it was based around the nine millimeter firing system and was capable of switching through various modes including rapid fire armor piercing rounds incendiary rounds silence mode which was a built-in suppressor stun high explosive rounds as well as hotshots which were superheated rounds capable of melting flesh in fact we got involved before even the director and the dop or art director came on board we were basically working with the producers and the writer alex garland on building up concepts for the film garland and visual effects supervisor john thumb began developing the slow mo concepts in 2009 experimenting with the colors saturation image framing and camera motion before mastering the surreal and otherworldly rainbow colour schemes to highlight the dreamlike nature of slo-mo to achieve these shots the slo-mo scenes were shot using a special camera known as a phantom flex which shot everything at 3 000 frames per second and delivered the beautiful footage that they could then edit and post wanting to deliver a look that had not been seen in any other film the pair continued their experimentation using blood bags prosthetics and compressed air to see the effect of direct body hits using the ripples in post-production to look like entry wounds so what we're doing is we're actually integrating our cg into a real environment and it helps us to ground our visual effects very much in the real world one of the end shots in the film is the wide shot from the air of magicity one when i did the original concept of that alex garland he said they look like gravestones in the mist and they really like that concept they signed off on that karl irvin was perfect as dread with the grisly coarse voice of a gunslinger and the soft intensity of a man fighting not only criminals but also fighting to contain the rage that fueled him featuring an outstanding cast including the menacing lena heady olivia thurbly and donald gleason who would go on to have a more significant role in garland's directorial debut with ex machina garland delivers a grim nihilistic ultra-stylized violent representation of a city we'd rather not visit in person and a judge we'd prefer not to cross although garland was the writer and executive producer of dread and the picture had been directed by pete travis urban himself had argued that garland should have been listed as co-director for all the work he had done directing the visual effects and putting the film together which i suspect was his preparation for transitioning from writing to directing garland had also stated that he originally planned on doing a trilogy provided he got the approval from studios and though the film is a critical success praised by critics and fans of the original graphic novels like myself it fell short of the box office target that would have green lit the sequel's production this ironically only occurred because the studios insisted on making dread a predominantly exclusive 3d release which put a lot of people who dislike 3d off from watching dread until it's released to home media with that in mind karl urban is currently in talks with the creators of the upcoming judge dredd mega city 1 television series and is hinted towards the likelihood that he'll be reprising his role as dread although garland won't be involved in the project either way i'm eagerly anticipating garland's next picture and have no doubt that the sci-fi wunderkind will deliver another visually enthralling and thought-provoking film well that's all for today folks thanks to all of you guys who requested we take a look at tread if there's any other stuff you'd like me to check out please don't hesitate to ask as always it's been a pleasure niantic here with film comics explained thanks for
