Drawing with an Old irish sewing machine with Karen Nicol

so I've persuaded Karen to show us and just how versatile she is with her lovely Irish now why'd you call it Irish we've got this turned on it's a bit noisy but my dear sir Irish well it's an Irish singer and it's an ancient embroidery machine I bought it secondhand 30 years ago but it's a very very simple machine it does very similar things to a multi head to the industrial machines computer machines that you use now but it's totally hung governed so what you have is that the machine has no feed that will feed the fabric through all right and no presser foot so you just got the free needle and is it what I'm not going to say it's a regular there's not a spring needle raining but this is just just a plain needle so if you just just as a straight tube but of course it costs you're free you can do your moving your paper rather than your yes pencil but the wonder what this machine is that I have a knee table which I can press and and that does the width so and because it's an industrial machine it's really tough so yeah and presumably you can use a really a wide variety of threads on this too and yes it's quite sensitive I mean you can use this is just a rayon thread you can move the cotton all around but you can also put thick threads in the spool you know and change your tension well yes you refer to that on one of your lovely nice things how you change the tension so the bottom thread comes a little bit up to the top so yes you're quite happy changing tension I know my students kind of go all mustn't touch must touch but it's part of your designing isn't it with you yes yes and it's worth it to get to get all right yes yes don't need it right but because button can just you know and you can I guess it's oh no there's some rejects over there but yes I mean this is just there any rejects because they didn't quite admit it like I said they didn't meet up with the picture you had in your head well sorry but I think white beautiful we are arrow angel's wings or a variegated thread clearly here yes and you've got a stay at restaurant and after it yes yes um but you can put down a thicker thread and for instance and more or less as thick as you like cover it and cover you come because your hands are so close you can do so many things you can for instance you can do this on any machine then cause you can you're quite your where you made because it's test it cuz that's Angora if you stand it it would like us up you can last damn these this is the thread you used on that gold monkey that's right and this was from a French flea market a French car boot sale it were and it was a euro a real which is fantastic you must get miles on a real bunny rabbit yes I've done two monkeys with two euros well but um so you can but it it's a lovely thread but you can of course you can do this technique with with anything you can bunch up great big like red yeah so it's a great one for covering covering areas very quickly and you presumably would we've got this lovely bright red thread in here but it what color thread would you use if this was a real piece of revenge and demonstrate I use an awful lot of transparent thread they say it's invisible stearic yes because you just invisible yes well cookus and you can just use it for well it is what it says isn't it it's as invisible as long as your machine likes it and you obviously get your and also such friends with your machine yeah unlike anything so you can just catch it there Wow fantastic it's very fast and very and of course so you can do beautiful lettering with it or anything yes well it's obviously become your best friend second best friend maybe nobody else is loud on it and the other thing that I must just direct I view is to is your your lovely variety of threads well drawers of thread because you have all color-coordinated we are so envious yeah are so envious and you were saying you can never have the right green no no I have two drawers agree they I always want just a different Creed Estes okay well that's also comforting because I know most of us think oh I should have the right one but ya know but just how gorgeous they are - all right thank you so much Karen fetcher thank you
