i'm daggett this is daggett designs ladies and  gentlemen welcome back to a brand new video   in today's video we are going to be drawing  three more japanese classic tattoo designs   if you think you're going to love this video make  sure you give it a thumbs up and if you are new   to my channel make sure you hit that subscribe  button and without anything else to say let's   just get straight into this one all right so i'm  sketching in red and we are using the ipad pro you   could of course use whatever sketching medium you  have don't feel like you have to have an ipad for   this uh we're going to go ahead and start with an  oval on i should probably mention we are starting   off by drawing a japanese style frog one of their  anamorphic frogs that look sort of like humanoid   characters or they're they have human traits that  make them a little bit more uh characterized okay   so starting off a little oval i'm coming  around the side with a little contour line here   and i'm going to place in a really quite  a large circle for our eye with a little   loop around it for their little bulgy eyelids and  on the opposite side of the head to this i'm just   going to come out and back down okay you're not  actually drawing the eye you're just drawing the   back of the eyelid so you're drawing the back  of this on the other side and at the front of   this will be where the nostrils sit unimportant  details for now anyways at the bottom of our oval   i'm also going to draw in a circle it's going  to be for a little detail on the cheek later on   now we're going to draw a body just  in behind this leave a little gap and draw in a larger oval than the head  and you can make this fair bit larger   all right now to join the  body and head on the top here   we're going to use a line that curves  down and then up for the body like so   and to join the bottom half i'm actually  going to come from about halfway up the head and sort of join that into the body and these  can be these lines can be refined later on   to your liking it's all going to depend  on how fat you want your frog to be   how skinny you want it to be and  what he's actually going to be doing   now to add in our limbs we're going to go ahead  and start with this limb here i'm going to come   up right beneath the cheek area here and have  it tucked back a little bit more this way okay so we've got a little cigar shape in there  like this now we're going to come forward from   that with this sort of shape just a curve coming  forward we can curve out and then back in towards   there and then i just add this little flick at the  end to create like an elbow shape and again you   can sort of refine this later on and for our hand  or i don't know do they call them hands on frogs   not too sure i'm going to come out  and back in for the little thumb area   and then i'm going to create one two knuckles  before coming back into the hand this one's   going to be really simple and then i'm going  to actually have him holding a weapon or a tool   in this case i think i'm just going to do a simple  staff or a stick so just adding a little oval and   i like to have it sort of flared out towards the  end there and then you can come through the hand   bring it back as far as you'd like it to go just  make sure you're following the thickness all the   way down and i'll flare it out again towards the  end there now sort of want to have his other front   limb stretched out in front of him so i'm going to  start by just imagining where the shoulder starts   and trying to sort of assimilate that length so  this is actually the end of the arm or the end   of the elbow joint there and then i'm going to  come out again from there with another couple of   curved lines to sort of create that forearm so the  forearm typically is going to be skinnier towards   the elbow and get a little bit wider towards the  hand that's probably the best way to explain it   and now i want to have i'll just draw a little  oval in at the end here for our palm and i want   to have one finger going off this way one going  off this way and maybe the thumb sticking out   maybe not quite that much we're coming out to  the side here i think that's going to look good   and so for each of the fingers i'm essentially  going to let me just make this a bit smaller   i'm going to come out add a little bubbly  bit to the end and then come back in   all right frogs have those little  sticky pads on the end of their fingers   so it's going to look quite good just adding that  little knobbly bit to the end you can make them   more claw-like but then you're looking at more  of like a toad so if you're doing more of a toad   character as opposed to a frog you can make the  fingers look a little bit more like claws okay   now coming out for the thumb follow my  shape out add the little knobbly bit and   come straight back into the palm now looking at  the hind limbs here i'm going to have one coming   forward so you're going to start the very back  of your oval or maybe even past it a little bit   and start with a big oval like this now again  this can be sort of wider at the back here   and come down to a little bit of a point rounded  off point i should say to create the knee area   okay and of course you want your hind legs to  be much bigger than the front legs these are the   jumping legs uh and now i'm going to come back on  an angle sorry i come back on an angle from there   from where the knee is with a similar shaped joint  however it's going to be a little bit skinnier okay so just coming back like so and now the back  foot is going to come down from there now it's   going to be quite long compared to the front  feet so i'm going to start by adding in this   sort of triangular shape like this and i'll come  down the center of it to find the center toe   and the other toes are going to splay  out from there and now you can go ahead   and pretty much add in the knobbly bit  for each of the toes at the end there like this okay and then i like to just link it back up with  a bit of a wavy line okay and if you want to you   could add some webbing in between the toes just  by adding some little curve details and now you   can imagine where the other hip starts the back  of this and i'm going to have this one sort of   kicking out i want it to look dynamic and i want  it to look like he's sort of jumping off something   so i'm you know you don't really want to have him  just standing there or you know doing nothing sort   of better to have him actually doing some sort of  activity just going to create a little bit more   dynamic um posture to him and then you can  add in that second part where the knee starts   trying to keep your size pretty  pretty close to the other leg   okay like this and then you can add in his  other hind foot here just adding in your little   triangle shape first then coming up the center i'm  actually going to curve these ones a little bit   because we're seeing this from the  the palm surface of the foot there   and so now when i come up and do each  toe i'll give you an example here oh come down and when i get to the palm  i'm just going to add this little bump   and that's just going to help i think sort  of differentiate it from the front of the   foot and make it look a  little bit more like a palm   there's probably lots of different ways to do  this and you don't have to do it in this way but   i think adding a bit of bumpiness to the  inside there just makes it look more like   the inside of a foot and less of the outside  it's like a little bit more muscle under there   and of course you can add in your little web  section to sort of help him swim oh now just one   thing before i forget i did want to add a little  hat to this guy like i said these characters in   japanese illustrations tend to be anamorphic i  think is the term um correct me if i'm wrong in   the comments i think it's anamorphic uh where  essentially they have humanoid traits that make   them a little bit more uh more recognizable for us  i guess as characters you'll see this a lot with   uh you know disney cartoons and stuff like that  and all actually all sorts of cartoons animations   where there's animals that can talk it's very  common in japanese anime as well and they a lot   of the time wear clothes and do activities  that humans would do so we're sort of doing   that with our frog here i'm just adding in this  little leaf or lily pad to the top of his head   and adding in these lines for detail now  for the top of the head i'm going to come   down pretty smooth following the head a little  bit of a bump where the nostril would sit on   the opposite side of the head and for the mouth  i'm going to come down like this and pretty much   back like that and then you can come from  behind here with a line that comes around   and joins up into the mouth and that's just  going to give you like the bottom jaw section   and throwing in our little nostrils at the front  there as well okay so that gives you the front of   the mouth now for your eye pretty much trace  your shape i like to make them a little bit   more ovular like so and for this inside section  i'm going to make my brush a little bit bigger   i'm going to press let go and press like this  and you might need to mess around with it a bit   and you want to get almost this  little bow tie shape like that   and then i like to add a little ghost  line around this just a thin little line   of detail around our pupil that's  going to give us a little frog pupil adding our eyebrow and our eyebrow on the  outside section there so that's going to   give you pretty much all the detail for the  face i like to add in these little ovals   and little bumps i guess they're like little  warts or something uh that kind of just gives   it a bit of texture and makes the skin look a  little bit rougher frogs and toads tend to have   really sort of bumpy skin so that kind of gives  it a little bit extra detail there now there's   one other little detail i'm gonna do here uh  just coming forward on the face a little bit   and you need the line to be really inconsistent  so if you're doing this on paper i would encourage   you to use a brush pen or you could just line  this thing out and do it with a regular pen   but i want this inconsistency here to come through  the eye around our little oval at the back here   and then maybe just trace back onto the body  a little bit and you want these lines to get   fatter and thinner and this is going to give  you this nice little stripe down the side of   the body which you don't have to do i mean some  frogs won't have it and you can sort of add all   sorts of different details to whatever frog you're  doing i encourage you to reference a real frog now   the rest of this guy is pretty simple there's not  really much else to it i'm pretty much going to   follow a lot of my lines around maybe making  some of them a little bit more wavy just for   texture and just making sure that all the  proportions are correct with my limbs there   and for the stick here we're going to texture  this the same way that we texture horns and   i've done this before many many times  but essentially you're going to vary   your line weight quite a lot just by changing the  pressure on your nib again this is not something   that you need an ipad for it's very easy on  here however i've done this many times on paper   just using a brush pen okay so  just varying your line thickness   just by applying more or less pressure and using  a brush pen for this is perfect so if you have   a brush pen that you like to line with this  is going to be the perfect tool for creating   that really rough texture on the outside of  the stick and then on the inside you can do   a little bit of the same now to draw the body  section in it's quite simple i'm tracing my top   line all the way over and around to the hind leg  so that's very simple we're going to come around   for the belly here so following this line back  from behind the arm i like to come up like this   and then just come out again for the belly that's  just going to help sort of separate the front   and the back end of the body now for the hind  limbs it's very similar to the front of the body we're pretty much just tracing over  them and adding in little details   there's not much to add here you're pretty much  just following the base shape for your character   you can make some of those lines a little bit more  wavy if you'd like but that's basically it i like   to add a couple of these little folds sometimes to  the joints and that's going to make it look like   the skin of the frog there is a little bit bunched  up but that's basically basically it for this okay   so just following along your shape and tidying  things up neatening them and adding details   now the last little thing you can do if you'd  like is add a bit of a pattern to the back   i just add these rough sort of splotches and in  terms of coloring that you would just shade it in   pretty much whatever color you'd like i like  when i'm doing a pattern on the back of an animal   i like to do black primarily depending on what  it is of course you could do brown or something   i sort of like using a darker color  for this so just shading that in   uh whatever color you'd like in this case i guess  we're doing red and that my friends is how to draw   a japanese style anamorphic frog all right next  up we're going to be drawing a different style   of chrysanthemums so i've shown you guys how to  draw chrysanthemums two or three times but this   is going to be a different style of chrysanthemum  because there are so many different i think   there's hundreds of different varieties of them so  we're going to start with a little circle for the   center or an oval because we're doing this on a  slight angle and now essentially what i want to do   is come out from this with multiple lines  so i'm going to start with one at the bottom   and then each side is going to come out and i'm  going to slightly curve these side lines down   like so and we'll do one at the top and  the top one needs to be just a little bit   shorter than this bottom one okay like  that and now we can go between these   with more lines again the bottom ones to the side  are going to curve down and out like so the top   ones are also going to curve but just be a little  bit shorter i suppose is the right way to put it like so and you could if you wanted to  add some smaller lines in between the gaps   it's not entirely necessary here i'll show you  why in a minute to line that center section you   can do lots of different details but i like to  do these little flicks all the way around this   is the way that i like to do the little stamens  on the inside of flowers i think it has a really   nice classic look to it but basically just these  little flicks all the way around your center   okay now to add your petals we're going to start  with the one that's coming directly up and add in   like this little pointy petal shape it's  actually more like a little leaf shape adding a   little center vein to it now you can come to the  next uh curved one that's coming out like this adding a little petal to that the next  one around you want these to be quite   wide as well don't make them too skinny   these lines are just going to create like little  guides they're not perfect and they're not sort   of meant to be because this is a flower so i have  like a bit more of an organic shape to it but i'm   pretty much adding a petal to each line there and  then you can come in between each of your petals and draw in a larger petal shape okay like so like  so so almost think of this as how you would draw   scales on a fish or a dragon or something like  that you're going in between each of them it's   just not nearly as perfect and centered now for  the bigger ones what you can do if you'd like   is adding a fold over so coming from the tip or  the back here and adding in this additional line   and you can do it in the opposite  direction on some of them as well   i think it's important to start skinnier at the  base and get wider towards the tip there and   that's going to give you a fold over okay now i  don't want to add fold overs to these back ones i   might leave them as they are and just sort of for  some of these front ones and you can still add in   your center vein to the inside of these just make  sure they're curving in the right direction okay now from here essentially what you're going to  do is continue on with this same pattern and each   time your petals are going to get slightly  bigger and that's okay they're supposed to   as we get to the outside of the flower the petals  at the back of our flower i try to keep a little   bit smaller than the front ones and that's because  they're less visible they're sitting at the back   of the flower and they're sort of falling down  and backwards behind our flower shape there so   a little bit less visible on these back  ones now another little detail you can   do for variation on your pedal styles is a  little fold over on this side and a little   fold over on that side and that's going to  make it look like the pedals folded over   on both sides now that's going to give you  the basic shape for your flower if you'd   like to you can add some leaves i'm going  to go ahead and do that just by drawing in   a few lines wherever i'd like my leaf to start  and chrysanthemum leaves tend to have quite a few   center veins to them and then i'm just gonna  add in these long uh bumpy leaf shapes okay   keeping this one nice and simple uh chrysanthemum  leaves do have a little bit more detail to them   uh but i wanna keep this tutorial a little bit  easier so just adding in these bumpy leaves   for your chrysanthemum once you've done in  those bumpy shapes you can also go ahead   and add in these little lines on either side  of your center vein and that's going to create   the veins of the leaves okay and now once you've  done that you've got a beautiful looking japanese   chrysanthemum all right so for this last one guys  we're going to be drawing the head of one of my   favorite japanese folklore characters a fu dog  or a fu lion these are the guardian characters   i'm going to draw an oval and i'm going to draw  a line wrapping around the front of it like so like a center line and then wrapping around it  this way for the eyebrow line okay just like this   now you can actually drop in if you  come down and forward a little bit   drop in a circle like so with a couple of little  circles off to either side of it for our nose   and now we can drop in the eye shape and i  like to have these on a slight bit of an angle   okay so one and the other one's going to be a bit  closer to where the nose is just on this angle okay two and i like to also  draw in a circle just above this   that's going to give us a rough idea of where  our eyebrow is going to sit now below the nose   we'll do a circle on either side let's make  that bottom line a little bit more prominent   like so and like so on the other side so that's  going to give you the main shape for the top   portion of the head i'm going to come down and  forward slightly just adding in another oval giving us a bottom jaw or a chin and then  coming back and then back looping around   to where the eye roughly is to create a cheek  okay that's going to create that sort of shape   around the back there and then for our ear i'm  going to come back from where the eye is and then   just above the cheek i'll drop down and out like  so let's just try and tidy that up so down out   and back in like this okay and just for  reference sake i will double up the inside   uh portion of the ear because that's  what it's going to look like once we've   actually drawn it now that's it for the  undersketch so let's open a new layer up   and we'll go ahead right in with the details so  let's start with the uh first eye here i'm gonna   start with our circle and i'm gonna start  by adding a big spiral above the eye here   and then these little overlapping lines that come  forward across the eye and at the end of these just a thick line that comes forward like  that i like to do two just for a little bit of   added detail now you can follow your eye shape  under and forward and then close the front of   the eye off so that's going to give you the  curly bushy eyebrow of the food dog there   and you're going to do the same thing  from the other side now the only thing is   the angle of the hair is going to change  slightly so instead of being a big oval   circle spiral i'm going to do this one a little  bit more ovular okay like this so i'm pretty much   for this one i'm going to come down from the top  forehead bit start with a bit of a thicker line come in back out and then around for the nose  and you can really experiment with those shapes   to get one that you like but i like to just add  like a wavy bumpy texture to the top of the nose   and now we can complete the other eye just  by bringing that eyebrow all the way through and tracing our eye shape all the way  around now to finish the detail for the   nose here i'm going to come to where the  circles intersect and add in a nostril   follow my oval around and create another nostril  on the other side and now you can come around from   the outside of this and add in a nostril shape  which is just like this wavy shape there's lots of   different ways to do this one but it's just i like  to do this little wavy shape on the outside making   sure that the base is bigger than the top here so  you could even separate this into smaller shapes   which might be helpful and i should  have explained but two smaller shapes   and dipping between them is going to give you that  nostril shape okay now for the mouth section it's   going to be similar to our eyebrows let me come  to the outside here add a spiral in like this   and then come off that with lots of little  overlapping lines almost all the way to the center   you can add a line in right there and then coming  from this outside section with another spiral and   again i sort of want this one to be on a little  bit more of an angle like so because we're seeing   a little bit less of that side of the face and  bring that up to center that's going to give you   your mustache and i like to put in these few dots  on the muzzle area there now to link the outside   part of the face you can just add this little lip  to the eye if you'd like and then i just add in   a little wavy line for the cheek that joins down  to where the mouth is so that's really nice and   simple adding in some teeth at the top here i'll  just come to where the mustache is on either side   adding a large tooth two three four smaller teeth  and one more larger tooth on the other side and   this doesn't have to be perfect again you can sort  of play around with it and get it to your liking   i'm going to follow a shape back  from the mouth to where the cheek is like this so that links into the mouth  to the top part of the mouth there and i   like to make the line at the back a little  bit fatter then and throw in a nice large   tooth and you can add a bit of  texturing to that one if you'd like   as well we're going to follow the shape of the  bottom oval here roughly for our mouth following   it around dipping down slightly before coming  back up and joining in to the rest of the mouth like so and now you can throw in a set of teeth at  the bottom and these are going to be very similar   uh to the teeth that are at the top   you're going to see a little bit less of that  gum uh because of where the teeth are sitting   behind the bottom lip there and actually drawing  that lip we're just gonna double up on that line   at the bottom now to get our beard section i'm  gonna come to the bottom side of the chin here start adding in a nice big spiral like so then coming forward off it they're going to get  a bit tighter and smaller towards the middle   and then i'll have them come back out for the  outside of the mouth there and then you can   pretty much add in these little curl hairs and  these little overlapping lines to create the fur   and this is pretty much going to continue  up all the way to the back of the jaw now before we get on to the rest of the  face a really simple way to add a tongue   add a curve loop that up and back down and  then just add a line to the center of it   that's just going to give you like a little easy  way to draw a tongue to the inside of the mouth   now the ear is quite simple following my line  around from the top adding in this folded over   section and on the inside of it i'll add in these  little flicks similar to what we did on the inside   of our chrysanthemum just to look like a little  bit of fluff or fur on the inside of the ear   you can add in some little curved lines for  detail so that's going to be a really simple   way to draw the ear now pretty much comes  the more difficult part of doing this and   this just takes practice and repetition but i'm  pretty much going to add in these big spirals and overlapping lines similar to the beard as the  main of the of the food dog or the fu line here   they've got these big majestic manes on them and  it takes a little while to practice getting the   placement right and sort of making them look good  there's no real way to explain how to do this but   pretty much just bulking this whole guy out with  a whole bunch of spirals to create the hair and   a little piece of advice would be to wherever  you see like a gap that looks a little bit empty   just fill it up with some of this hair and that's  going to create like a big really full looking   mane now before you finish the mane on the top  of their head here you're just going to want to   come from the front eyebrow and add this wavy  line to the top of the head i like to keep it a   little bit flatter and not so bubbly at the top  there and now you can continue your hair rows behind this line okay because that's going  to create the top line of the head and the   mane is sort of sitting around the  neck area all right another little   variation on the hair here is going  to be to add these long wispy hairs which essentially going to add these long wavy  lines and then just join other lines into them   all right from the base of where they come from  so i'll add another one to the outside here   a long wavy line like so and then this line  needs to taper down to join into that line   and you can add as many lines to these as you  want make them as thick or as thin as you'd like   and as you can see once you've added in the main  for your food dog that really completes this   awesome design and that is it for today's japanese  flash guys i really hope you enjoyed today's video   i hope you give
