foreign or drive a bigger truck chances are you're gonna have to drive a manual it's going to require shifting these trucks their Transmissions different from a car they're non-synchronized so you're gonna need to learn how to double clutch it's the foundation of shifting these trucks Shifting the gears it's not quite like a car a car you can just quickly shift by pushing the clutch one time that's because they've got synchronized Transmissions a bigger truck has a non-synchronized Transmissions that's a little bit different we're going to look at going over the basics of double clutching learning understanding what it is and how to do it and how to do it efficiently my name is Chad this is excavation Revelation your place where excavation and strategies are revealed topics are discussed today we're going to reveal the strategy of double clutching in a truck you want to start by really getting familiar with your shifting pattern the less that you have to look at the pattern or you're driving or even think about it the better off you're going to be you have a lot to think about you have to concentrate on the road you want to try to keep two hands on the wheel as much as possible you've got other cars you've got sharp Corners to make you've got a load on usually there's a lot of things to think about so the less you have to think about your shifting pattern the better off you're going to be so always take lots of time to get familiar with it every truck's will be a little different each transmission is gonna be a little different each pattern is going to vary a little bit so this one for this video is an Eaton forward transmission it's a 10 speed it's got a high and low side in Black the numbers there are the gears on the low side the numbers in white are the gears on the high side there's a range selector here down is low up is high meaning when it's down you have access to first through fifth you also have access to reverse on the low side to get up to your higher speeds you flip it up you're now going to be in the sixth through tenth range and also you've got access to reverse high range it's not too common to use that but it does happen occasionally just it's good to know that that's an option thank you so just get familiar with it a little bit also once you're neutral you're gonna notice by just moving the shifter back and forth it's got a range it goes back and forth until it hits the side this is called the hard wall hard one left hard wall on the right it's not a big range probably six or seven inches but also if you kind of notice it kind of falls back into the middle pretty often on its own there are little springs in there and this puts it from your hard wall in the middle there's another wall called a soft wall so very gently just take your shifter and move it you'll feel kind of stops then move it again to the hard wall in the middle there are those little Springs that's keeping it in the center that's your soft wall what that does that helps you line up to get in these middle gears second and seventh third and eighth otherwise if there wasn't that stop it'd be harder to find those if you're just moving this back and forth real quick you're not really going to feel but if you take your time to go real slow you'll actually feel that stop in there this is something I wish I would have really kind of learned or somebody would have taught me years and years ago I'm sure I knew about it but I didn't really pay much attention to it but if you really take your time just go slow you'll feel it in there so we all know the shift it requires the clutch so just practice before you even start out you gotta push the clutch in the whole way to engage the clutch brake to get it to actually go in gear from a dead stop this has to happen every time for a dead stop you don't necessarily have to start out in first it's going to vary though if you're loaded if you're on a hill most of the time you can start out in second or third is pretty common third is straight back and down now I'm holding the clutch in the trucks on to just keep that in mind but it's good to get used to going the process of gear to gear so back to so go from third get used to going up to Fourth straight back down to fifth from there you're in your low side you want to get the high side you hit the range selector to go up neutral hallway over to that hard wall and down is sixth up to soft wall is seventh straight down is eight hour to the hardware on the right up is nine down the hard wall is ten feel your neutral you can drop it back down when you're just learning it's good just go gear to gear as you get more advanced more practice you can essentially start the float gears or even skip them but today we're just going to concentrate on going gear to gear one at a time [Music] as far as your pedals go you're gonna have your clutch your brake and your throttle people often see this this will show up in the video too this is not a pedal at all it's just for adjusting your steering wheel you won't even see it when you're driving most of the time in the video I'm sure it's going to show up and people aren't asked but just ignore this this is the clutch it's easy with your left foot the brake and the throttle are used at the right foot when you're double clutching I mentioned you want to start out the whole way in this engages the clutch brake it stops the gear is that why you can get into good ear but when you're going from gear to gear you're just actually pressing the clutch softly down part way just a couple inches and this will vary from truck to truck a little bit from how your clutch is adjusted there are different Springs in there you can adjust the tension on it but most of the time you're just pressing it down enough to create a disruption to be able to get the truck from one gear to the next you don't have you definitely don't want to go the whole way down because this will stop your transmission you know they'll actually wear things out you just want to press it in lightly when you're shifting so in a sense I had to go about this foreign double clutching you're pressing in your clutching in your gear say you're in second you're gonna press a question point in neutral then right before you go in the next skier you're gonna push the clutching again and pull it down it's not working right now because I'm sitting in neutral I didn't have the clutch break the whole way in so that's why I ground a little bit and we'll get going you'll kind of show you how it works but basically clutch in the neutral clutch in next gear two processes of touching the clutch so we'll start out in third here I've got the clutch pressed in the whole way so the clutch brake is engaged so I can get in the third gear now from here on I'm just going to depress the clutch just slightly when I'm double clutching start out third clutch here clutch much neutral punch gear is the process so every time clutch neutral clutch gear slowing down the downshift you want to give it a blurp of throttle to help patch up your speed your RPMs to get it to drop in gear but if you're just going up you don't have to worry about getting a throttle just coming down you're giving a throttle [Music] so we'll start out again a third we'll start out in third as soon as the light changes here you want to let out on the clutch clutch neutral clutch gear get my RPMs up a little higher clutch neutral clutch gear when I hit my shifter up into high range but neutral clutch gear so I went from fifth to six I went up to the high range throttle punch neutral clutch gear when you're not shifting it's good practice to keep two hands on the wheel always be checking your mirrors constantly but it helps have two hands on the wheel that's where it gains more speed much neutral punch gear down into eight I went from seven to eight it can be nerve-wracking there's a lot to think about when you're learning this it's going to take some practice some muscle memory some timing but it all comes with practice we go from eight to nine get a little throttle too much neutral clutch gear it goes right in it's a really good feeling it gets nice and smooth effortless you can sort of listen to know when the engine's kind of getting hungry it wants to go for to higher gear you can also watch your RPMs as a good way to learn we're going to be downshifting here I'm going to go from ninth to eighth I'm down around a thousand clutch throttle clutch downshift [Music] but throttle clutch downshift start on Fourth much neutral clutch gear down fifth one sixth much neutral clutch gear 27 punch neutral clutch gear eighth much neutral clutch gear you're doing these things simultaneously it's a lot to think about it sounds like a lot but once you get practice it'll get easier and easier we'll downshift now from eight to seven you're letting your RPMs drop around a thousand clutch throttle clutch gear we're gonna go from Seventh to sixth but your RPMs drop again clutch throttle clutch gear as far as RPMs these are Revelations per minute they're all times 100. it's it's going to vary depending if you're loaded empty on a hill going up or down but there is kind of a sweet spot between 1 000 and 1500 RPMs when you shift if you're up shifting in the low side like one through five around fourteen hundred to fifteen hundred is what you're gonna hit before you start shifting once you're in the high side usually around 1500 to 1600 is where you're shifting for those gears now again it can very you can go definitely above and beyond them but just a good spot to learn is in this range and for downshifting as well you want to be around a thousand RPMs usually but not always it's going to vary especially if you're loaded the truck's going to be having a lot more Demand on it so to be different I recommend starting empty to get a feel for this you can also just listen to how the truck's acting as far as shifting there's a lot to go over and hopefully a lot of that makes sense but my biggest advice I would say if you're just starting out learning how to double clutch is fought a back road or somewhere with not a lot of traffic just go empty you start getting used to it take your time try not to get nervous I know it's easier said than done but just trying to panic if you have a missing gear just use your throttle feel around and drive to get the RPMs matched up to get into the gear you never want to just jam it in grind it real bad that is terrible for your transmission just keep playing with the throttle just get to match up take your time it'll eventually get it it's all good if you guys have any comments about anything you want to talk about before clearly just let me know and we'll discuss or maybe somebody out there has a story or a better idea about doing a certain Thing feel free to leave a comment and let us all know
