I like the quote about not comparing batsman of the present to those of the past just before the lesson starts, reckon this is because no-one wanted to admit that Don was the best ever?

Iโ€™ll never understand how Bradman (or his wife) could have thought that Sachinโ€™s batting style was like the Donโ€™s

Sachinโ€™s game was a lot of punches down the ground, while Bradmanโ€™s is this free flowing bat completing the full arc.

Sachin was also a very dominant straight batter playing in the V, while Bradman seems to thrive playing massive impossible to time flicks and pulls.

Perhaps Sachin in his earlier days was more free flowing (the Sharjah games come to mind), but I still donโ€™t see the resemblance in styles.

Itโ€™s such a thin bat too and the guy is still hitting these bowlers to all parts. Absolute mad man.

I just find it uncanny how similar Maxwell's shot making looks to this.

This guy wouldnโ€™t cut it today. Geez he looks mediocre.

....I hate to be like this because I know Bradman was class, but whenever I see Bradman bat, all I can think of is him trying to play one of those wristy flicks across the line with his head falling over to the side against Mitchell Johnson...

[Music] the Australian team which visited England in 1930 to recover the ashes a task in which they succeeded contained the name which was to become as famous in quickly to set of WG grace the reputation of Don Bradman had preceded him the young man from up country in New South Wales who Australia said was as good as home and claimed particulars of course two Englishmen at that time [Music] Don came here and immediately started making centuries it's quarter century in both innings in the Melbourne Test against England on the MCC tour in 1928-29 now he's called centuries in England Nottingham Leeds lords and the ER go missing anna manchester and he's been scouring them ever since nineteen in eight series of tests against England in the course of 20 years from which you have to subtract six years of war [Music] [Applause] what a mixture of never calculation and attractive audacity is the cricketer bradman at times you begin to regard him as a machine and then comes the flash of activity which proves if you brandman's pull his favorites focus he will tell you is one of those goddess feats of skill for which awaits in delighted anticipation and it's out to witness [Music] [Applause] bradman on the temporary defense is a master of concentration to to have succeeded as he has succeeded it has been necessary to wear down the spirit and accuracy of many a good bowler and watch dogs running between the wickets it has the same determined aggressiveness as the rest of his conduct in the cricket field [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] now this is an instructional film in which the greatest of all Muslim cricketers comparisons with the great men of the past and never conclusive and therefore should be disregarded shows us the batsman's essential strokes and explains them in his own words the commentary was recorded by down on his last tour of England though the pictures on which he thought he could not improve were taking on a previous tip and were used in his book how to play cricket there is it the Mike Don Bradman let us see first of all in slow motion a forward defensive shot to be absolutely correct in a technical sense the bat should be a little closer to the maid but you will see quite clearly the fundamentals of playing straight and well forward towards the pitch of the ball it doesn't matter much what happens after the ball is struck but up to that stage movements are important keep the handle out of the bat go forward perhaps even more than in the film here we see a back defensive stroke the bat should be perfectly straight when the ball is struck legs protect the stumps in case the ball turns too much or is deflected off the bat the most important defensive shot in cricket now a series of drives this one is the straight drive the ball is driven back past the bowler very close to the stumps have a good look at the position of the feet the coordination of swing and balance all drives are similar in character but the direction of the shot varies according to the direction of the ball which is bold for instance these two off drives which you now see would be played to a ball pitched just outside the off stump the character of the shot is the same it should be hit hard and along the ground just wide of the bowler the same applies to the cover drive but here the ball needs to be pitched some distance outside the off stump and obviously the face of the bet must be slightly turned in order to deflect the ball at an angle of some 45 degrees the cover drive is a beautiful stuff to watch as well as being most effective a forcing shot off the back foot may be made when the ball is short of a link usually it pays to try and send the ball past the on side of the stumps at the bowlers end it is very much like a back defensive shot only this time the ball is hit hard and the bat is allowed to follow through the square cut is very useful when the ball is pitched short and well outside the off stump we see it first played off the front foot which can be used only if the ball is pitched very short and secondly off the back foot which is the more common watch carefully how the bat is rolled over by the wrists immediately after making contact with the ball thereby ensuring that the ball will not be cut up in the air power is obtained mainly from the wrists as there is little opportunity to bring the shoulders into play next is demonstrated the late cutting this shot can only be played to a ball well outside the off stump the main thing is to get across and over the ball and see that the bet when it makes contact is almost parallel to the line of flight the weight of the body should be kept on the right foot until after the ball has been struck a common fault is to transfer the weight too soon the forward leg glances here shown it should be made only when the ball is pitched will up and it is good theory to try and grants the ball which is in a line with the outside of the front leg the body is then in an excellent position for balance a similar theory applies to the back leg lamps in this film however the ball was glanced off the line of the stumps which is rather a dangerous thing to attempt in a match notice the pivot of the body on the back foot and the use one can make of the area between the bat increase and the stumps my favorite shut the pool shot as you will see it can only be played when the ball is pitched short and is not rising too high it may be in a line with the stumps or even outside the off stump keen eyes and concentration are needed tremendous power can be put into the shot by coordinating risks for arms shoulders and body swing watch carefully how the role of the wrists can be used to keep the ball along the ground this is vitally important the ball may be hit between mid arm and square leg and when well played the stroke will bring many runs when the ball is pitched very short and is rising high the hookshot may be played by getting the body inside the line of flight of the ball and swinging at the ball as it comes roughly towards the shoulder because of the height of the ball it cannot very well be kept on the ground so care must be taken to hit it clear of any fields Minh on that side also make sure to swing the body out of the line to avoid the risk of injury jumping out to drive a slow bowler is an attractive shot quick and accurate footwork is essential the one must get right down to the pitch of the ball and make it a half volley practically the same thing is shown in slow motion but this time the ball is lofted into the outfield the rhythm of the swing is interesting and notice that the bat is starting its upward arc before making contact with the ball next we see the way in which the ball is held when trying to borrow an inswinger in addition to the grip the use of arm and shoulders is important the arm is usually brought over close to the head good for the out swinger a most difficult ball to bowl usually delivered with the hand and arm following through as straight as possible much practice is needed for the baller to acquire the exact movement to suit himself here you see my grip for the leg break which of course is delivered with a combination of wrist and finger spin the third finger is the one from which the leverage is obtained because of the difficulty to control spin this type of ball is perhaps the hardest to master but the hardest to play in fold properly finally we see some examples of fielding it is important to notice that the ball is gathered as the weight is being transferred onto the back foot and his throne as the weight goes through onto the front foot in this way no time is lost between the moment picking up the ball and dispatching it this speed in getting rid of it brings more run outs than any other cause Don Bradman is not only a great cricketer he is also a great captain a department of the game to which he has made no reference in his commentary but watch him in the field conversing with his Bolin's and studying the batsmen moving fielders watching every point and planning every move note is concern too as he accompanies an injured colleague Sydney Barnes in this case from the field [Music] his last test in England at the herbal produced a great ovation for the opponent of Englishman delighted to acclaim and whom the King subsequently honored with the confirming of a nitro sir Donald Gregg [Applause] many people thought that for so great a figure to retire at 40 was to cheat the game of even greater glory but Bradman was firm here were his own words on the subject and I think I'm probably the best judge of the many little creeks and browns that go on and my joints throughout the day especially when we're out in the field and I'm quite sure I shall have no regrets at all in having the in the pavilion and watch the other fellers that was his decision but he has left us a wonderful memory of successful innings some of which are illustrated in this film the advice and the examples he gives in these pictures will we hope be treasured by all cricketers the youngsters in particular with everything you do in cricket remember that concentration is the key not to success and that to be a successful vestment you must watch the ball I cannot emphasize these things too much watch the ball and concentrate [Music]
