i'm going to show you how you can maintain a beautiful car like this lexus suv without being ripped off by mechanics charging you for work that doesn't need to be done or overcharging you for the stuff that they do do now this particular vehicle is a 2010 rx 350 it's a customer's car it's got almost 100 000 miles on it and it runs like a clock because it's being maintained correctly but at the same time he's not wasting money on unnecessary repairs or unneeded maintenance now this is a fancy lexus it's all wheel drive as you can see there's a drive shaft in here there's the inner cv boot in the front and as we go to the back you'll see it's got a differential back here there's the big old differential and there's the drive shaft and when you look looking there there's the backdrive shaft cv boot now this all-wheel drive system made by lexus being toyota it's a very strong system it needs very little maintenance but what it does need and make sure you do it is you need to change the fluid and the rear differential and then the transmission and front differential every once in a while in the case of this thing if you do it every sixty thousand seventy thousand miles that's perfectly fine and if you want the truth of it i got customers of these things that have 250 300 000 miles they've never changed any of those fluids and it still works okay now me i wouldn't push it the stuff's expensive and what does the fluid cost paint up money just go to toyota or lexus buy the fluid at the dealer it's only a few bucks a quart you can easily change it yourself drain and fill not that big of a deal my advice is learn how to do it yourself and here's why i had a customer with one years ago he brought it in when it had 350 000 miles rear end was making some noise checked it pulled the back off it was full of sludge i said you know you gotta change the stuff every once in a while she replied i paid the dealer to change it three times they never changed it was just thick as could be you can't really trust people these days and look how easy it is to do just jack it up a little and here's the differential we're just going to drain it and refill it now these are often in here tight so get yourself a long extension bar like this and a socket this is a hex wrench i couldn't find my short one so i'm using my long one kind of silly butt shove it in the top one first that's the fill plug and we'll pull on it there it goes and as you can see now it just unscrews that's the fill which will fill it back up so we're gonna break the drain one loose now oh man you gotta pull like mad on these things but if you pull hard enough there it goes finally now we can use our fingers and the rest of it will come gurgling out there we go now it's going to drain you can see inside here there isn't that much came out it's even less than a quart then once it's done draining drain plug back in there it is right there and then use a giant bar and get it nice and tight oh you don't want it leaking and you got to make sure you use the right fluid in this case gl4 that's what we want right here gl4 this is the correct fluid now normally i put a pump in this pump it out in but this has enough clearance i can just clip the top and i can squeeze it in a lot easier just squeeze it in when there's room but a lot of times there isn't i got a little plastic pump i got at autozone and you stick the feed line in here and you just pump it in but this case we can just squirt it in now we just stick it up here and we squeeze it in uh then when it starts to drip down just screw the top back in and tighten it up and as you can see i found my short one it works better then the cars wipe any residue off you want to leave it clean so it doesn't drip now you might think the small amount of fluid that came out is no big deal but if you ever priced out a differential on a lexus you'd be really happy to change it out yourself you know every 60 80 000 miles not that big of a deal and when you see what a dealer wants to do the job plus you don't even know if they're going to do it it's a worthwhile thing to do yourself now the next maintenance i'm going to talk about is spark plugs particular ones are iridiums they can last a long time but you still got to change them every once in a while and it doesn't matter if your car is running perfectly fine because as these wear they'll run perfectly fine but as they get worn it'll strain the ignition system and eventually it can lead to burning out ignition coils in different parts from having to work too hard this thing's got like a hundred thousand miles so we'll change the spark plugs for the first time so off comes a stupid beauty cover that really serves no purpose now this has coil on plugs you just take off the 10 millimeter bolt that holds the coil in place and this pops out out it comes now as you can see they don't look bad i mean the new ones are shiny but it's a good idea to change them i've seen people go 150 200 000 they still run okay but i've also seen those cars the coils will burn out because there's too much gap as it ages so what the heck 100 thousand miles put in new spark plugs you can easily do it yourself they're all coated you don't put anything on them you just put them in spin it till they're not spinnable with your hand anymore there's torque readings but uh what you do is okay now it's snug and you turn it until you can't turn any more then just a little bit more it's on there perfect now plug assembly just goes back on and don't forget to put the little 10 millimeter bolt back on and make it tight the bolt helps ground the assembly so you want to make sure it's tight you don't want to loose ground and you do the other five as you can see it is not rocket science you just take your time do it like i am on an ice cold engine you don't want to do it on a hot engine these heads are made out of cast aluminum aluminum is relatively soft when it's hot it's even softer this thing's been sitting all night it's nice and cold you're not going to damage anything now the next maintenance item is coolant this particular one lexus toyota it uses the asian vehicle it's a special coolant it's called haute hybrid organic acid technology many companies make the stuff you don't necessarily have to go to the dealer and buy it as long as it's a whole coolant hybrid organic acid technology in this case it's good for seven years or 150 000 miles not something you have to think about all that often but like everything else it wears out now this vehicle's only got a hundred thousand miles on it it's let's see 11 years old so it needs a change as we look down here there's the drain petcock i'll zoom in right there that white cap all you do is twist it and when you do twist it have a pan ready to catch it as it drips you don't want animals drinking it it's poisonous and of course then you fill it back up and as you look in here there's the overflow you want to clean that out too same pink coolant you can take this out and flip it or use a suction device like i do to clean that out there's a reasonable amount in there you want to do that too now next is a and quotes maintenance item that i believe you don't need to do and that's rotating tires modern tires are radial tires they really don't need much rotating knowing i was a mechanic in the early 60s cars had bias flat tires they were perfectly round they would wear on evenly but these are steel belted radial tires you notice they're kind of squashed down they have a good tread pattern and they wear pretty evenly but of course garages are always trying to sell your tire rotation now monitor cars have tire pressure monitoring systems you change the tires around and rotate them you're confusing the machine the computer won't know you'll get codes popping up you got to pay a guy like me to put his machine on and resync the system so it knows which tire is where another pain in the butt that's going to cost you money you know how many times i've rotated tires in my west lexus or the matrix or my celica exactly zero times i have no problems they're good cars and they don't have any problems now granted let's say you got a junker and your front end's worn out your tires wear out fast sure put the front in the back of the back in the front and they'll last a little bit longer but speaking of throwing your money away whew you get those dealers oh bring it in for the 10 000 mile check up the 15 the 20 the 30 and then they said well this is a big one and it's 900 or 1500 they practically do nothing at all during those servicing you know how many of these services this lexus has had none of them 11 years old 100 000 miles still runs like a top a lot of that is total b s and especially if a place says like oh we'll give you lifetime free oil changes or rotate your tires free they're just getting you in there that's their lost leader sales technique then they'll try to sell you stuff that's why i did a video a few months about the guy who was putting tires on your car in your own driveway i love the idea not just for convenience but the only thing those guys do is sell tires the guy drives the truck and he installs tires on your car balances them on a machine in the truck they got everything self-sufficient they're not going to sell you a brake job strut shocks all kinds of stuff i've had customers go to those places and then their friend tell them about me because they didn't want to pay that money and i look at it and i say you don't need shots you need to stretch you need any of this stuff they're just trying to sell you stuff any chain generally they make money by selling you stuff sales guy he gets a percentage of commission of what he sells out the door so of course he's gonna try to sell you the kitchen sink like every time you bring it in or you need your fuel injectors cleaned fuel injectors are pretty much self-cleaning gasoline is a very good solvent now the only problem is some cars like the older volkswagens with the gdi gasoline direct injection they were designed wrong so that carbon built up on the intake valves because the fuel didn't go from the fuel injectors and sprayed over the head of the valves sprays right into the engine and the valves just sucked in air oil from the pcv system and that got on the valves and since no gasoline was cleaning them don't get suckered into paying for services you don't need you want to maintain it yes use quality oil don't buy the cheapest crap you can get your hands on change it case of this i changed about every 5 000 miles but don't go for overkill of a bunch of maintenance where hardly anything's done anyway and most of it doesn't even need to be done so now you know the truth about how to maintain luxury suv like this without breaking the bank and at the same time not causing any damage to your vehicle so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell [Music]
