[Music] I think in 20 years everybody's going to be driving an electric car come on 90 100 200 200 miles-per-hour the fart mode is pretty fun to play with leave passengers [Music] hey guys on this episode of fifty three we're gonna talk about what it's like to live with an electric car specifically a Tesla Model 3 because we're gonna talk about what it's like to charge and Tesla how fast it charges how much power you can get into it because that really is the crux of having an electric car but before we do that Tommy why don't you update them on this little accident that happened yeah so in the last episode we had the accident we showed taking this vehicle to our collision center Rickon bonden ver they gave us an appraisal and since then I called them to see what the update was and I guess someone at Tesla saw our video and has expedited the shipping process on a lot of these parts so we should have the big body panels in by the middle of next week so then we can disassemble the car see what other damage there is underneath and go from there yeah right now we're still waiting on parts and so the car still looks what looks like somebody punched it in the nose but today is all about charging Tommy so we're here at the office and this is where we've been doing most of our charging and in the last video you guys have said that it takes a long time to charge a Tesla from a regular wall outlet so Tommy why don't we show them how to do that and how long it takes we're gonna put the all-wheel-drive system in our new Tesla Model 3 through its paces I just ruined it guys I screwed up but I ruin the car we've got to do something with the quarter there's actually a buffalo you can feel it right here this is something I learned about Tesla pretty recently the charger ain't a Tesla is actually built into the vehicle so what you use to connect the car to the wall isn't a charger that's not what modulates the power coming in and controls a computer it's actually what they call a connector so it's just a way to get from the power that's in the wall or in you know you're charging source into the vehicle and then the charger actually takes charge from there I'm pointing to the back I don't think it's actually in the back it's just because this is where the charge port is yeah and so you get a connector with your model three we have ours right here comes this handy dandy case you get actually two things melons you get a connector but you also get this handy adapter which allows you to use other chargers because this charging port the Tesla uses is prior Terry to Tesla so no one else can use it but they thoughtfully give you an adapter so if you don't have a Tesla charger you can actually use this connector so once you show them how to hook it up but let's see how long it will take to recharge this now we purposely ran this thing out of power because we wanted to show how much it and how long it would take the charge so we've got what about 140 miles of range right now which is about half of the 310 now we should explain what we're gonna do in this video you can kind of think of the different charging speeds of a Tesla as different levels so we're gonna call this level one charging now this is what comes with the car it's called the mobile connector and it comes in this handy little bag that my dad just took it out of it's about 20 feet long and the standard plug here in the US is just gonna be your 120 volt wall outlet so three prong and I can actually go ahead and stick it into the wall like this just like you would any other appliance like a refrigerator you can see it starts flashing it comes to life their circuit breaker open I have the circuit breaker open to talk about the amperage that we can pull through this wall so typically Tesla says that 120 volt outlet like this through a mobile connector with a 15 amp fuse will charge your Tesla at roughly 3 miles per hour now that means that every hour you should get another 3 miles of range which is really really slow let's see what it is in the real world yeah so the cool thing is I've got my little Tesla app and open the charge port all I do is click open charge port and there it opens yep so Tesla says about 3 miles per hour using our mobile connector here let's see what it really is this little light starts flashing yep turn green we're going we're charging and then on the screen actually don't open door I'm gonna easier to see like this okay maybe we should open the window because it all kinda goes away but if you can see that right there it says 24 plus hours it'll take a sec at 2 miles per hour oh just jumped up to 4 miles per hour so that's really slow yeah it's 3 miles an hour from the home wall charger if you're charging this thing this way at home at night and you charge it for 10 hours that means you're gonna get 30 miles if you charge it for 12 hours basically overnight you're only gonna get 36 miles of range which isn't a lot well the other way to think about this is this is a 300 ish mile range battery if this was completely dead which is unrealistic all the way up to completely fold 300 miles three miles per hour about 100 hours which is about 4 days so it's a long time but they actually give you something else which is pretty cool why don't you shown that yeah this is basically another adapter that you get when you buy a Tesla and as you can tell by these prongs this is meant for like the dryer that you have at your house and this well I'll let you take it from here tell me you know the numbers yep so you could plug this into your 240 volt outlet at home can you actually go ahead and unplug this unplug that you have to first unlock it one of the things that Tesla does is they don't allow you to unplug this unless you stop charging and unlocking it now to do that once again you go to your Tesla app you click stop charging and then you click unlock charge port and now you can remove it so included with your mobile connector on your Tesla is this 240 volt outlet so what I can actually do here is unplug the 120 volt plug in the 240 and if I had a dryer outlet or something similar I could plug this in now using the mobile connector and this 240 volt plug yeah I'm at a 50 amp circuit and of course it varies a huge amount depending on which car but according to Tesla with this Model 3 it could theoretically charge this car at 30 miles per hour so 10 times as fast just by using this 240 volt outlet well we don't have one of these at our office what we can do Tommy is we can go over to a brewery and not have some beer but do what yeah we can move up to level 2 charging so if you don't want to charge with this little mobile connector you can install at home something called a wall connector which a sense is like a little charge box you have to wire it into your house it costs $500 to purchase the box from the passive depending where you get it yeah depending where you get it and then you have to pay to have it installed but it'll charge it much faster yeah and so luckily we have free charging stations less than a mile from our office that the Averys from the Avery brewery have it set up and these are not fast chargers right they're not super chargers but they are a lot quicker than wall charging and the idea is it's basically kind of a destination lifestyle thing right so you go there have lunch and charge up your car while you're waiting so let's take a ride over and show those yeah they're actually called destination charges actually the idea that a hotel or at you know a nice scenic spot you plug it in the idea is the place that runs the supercharger would pay for it in exchange for you buying their goods and their sandwiches and whatever yeah and you can actually see it on the navigation so we'll show them where it's at then we'll take a ride over there and plug it in and see how long it would take to recharge it there the other cool thing about this app is it also shows you where all the chargers are but in our office we're actually getting a little bit more than the three miles per hour charge time we're getting five miles per hour charge time and that could because we have a 20 amp circuit breaker so maybe we're drawing a little bit more power but yeah this app is really useful it shows you loops it shows you exactly where all of our superchargers are and the nearby destination charging Avery Brewing Company so I just sent it to Tesla and it'll actually go into the navigation even though it's only half a mile away and it'll show us exactly how to get there [Music] done it's pretty cool that the app just sent the destination of our next stop range and I've got is painful to the navigation system yeah so we're done with level one let's go find ourselves a level two charger now without getting too deep into the weeds a level two charger at a destination place should make us charge at about 30 to 40 ish miles per hour yeah much faster so let's say you're having lunch right mm-hmm and you're there for an hour you're gonna gain the same amount of charge that you would overnight at your house yeah or sometimes these are anything else eat turn right on to 63rd Street right there at Hotel so you could potentially charge your car overnight at a destination charger and turn right onto 63rd Street yeah of course you can install that faster charger in your house and it may be somewhat similar to a destination charger but I'm not gonna say that they're the same because there's so many different variables like we're kind of amps you're running right what kind of fuses are running yeah and then the other thing that's also it's not like gasoline right there's three types of gas usually right low mid and high grade and it doesn't affect the way a car performs too much because the car usually compensates for it but with charging there's a lot of variables as to how fast you can charge first of all it depends on the car you're driving right now cuz even within the Tesla family different cars have different charging rates yeah they do and also batteries are really finicky batteries don't like being too cold they don't like being too hot you know they don't like being too empty they really don't like being too full so they like to be nice and comfortable within a certain charge rate which means that they charge fastest at a certain you know charge percentage yeah yeah and even within the same model line right we've got the dual motor long range model three yeah if you get the standard range plus that car actually charges slower than this car yep so one of the things that you're getting when you step up to this car is you're getting a high recharge rate so here we are at Avery's and as you can tell it's one of our local brewing companies and look at that they've got 3 Tesla Chargers and then just a general I think it's called the Chatham o charger for other kinds of electric cars so you've got you know the 3 Tesla Chargers and then you've got the regular kind of charger so let's back in here let's see how fast we're gonna charge it luckily there's nobody here actually it's kind of cool because they've got both handicap parking and electric car parking in the front these guys are very progressive yeah very progressive when it comes to their their parking situation all right but like here you could take I think you can take a brewery tour which would take a while you're gonna have lunch which would take a while so if you're here for 2 3 hours you can get 120 you know or more range [Music] all right shall we church up yo let's see what we can do here at the Avery Brewing Company this nation charger good that's mr. Avery by the way we just happened to be here Big Cheese the Big Cheese we're filming this showing people how to charge hi I'm Roman yeah thanks nice to meet you so why'd you put in the Chargers well I'm a big electric car friend yeah yeah I think in 20 years everybody's gonna be driving on my fake car so you might as well be there first right exactly our customer is liking it we we've had more Tesla's in here than I thought we do really and we have this is a universal yeah you do that too so there's always cars there so so this is free right yeah you're paying for this yeah how much does it cost yet how much did you invest in I don't know I mean it's just part of the electric bill didn't go up that much okay I mean it and it most it's $100 a month that's probably not even that yeah yeah yeah I see you also have an electric car so yeah by the way guys if you ever in Boulder and you want some great beer and some great lunch come on over here the Avery Brewing Company yeah some of the best beer and munchies you can get around and you've got free electric car charging you know do people actually use it overnight you think that people like uses some people from over there we know come and leave their car park here all day really other than that you don't have any problems yeah that's a business over there somebody's yeah taking a little bit too much advantage oh that's a plug so so currently we're at five miles per hour so that's about where we were with the slow mobile connector now we've got 16 so speeding up quickly you can see 207 volts oh wow 33 37 36 and then only four hours and five minutes to get to our max charge point that we have set in the car right now so 37 miles per hour on this destination charging which is really pretty impressive now we should explain that the cool thing about Tesla is you actually have to change the max charge points depending on if you're using it daily or if you're using it on long trips so for example this battery is not happy if you're fully charging it and fully depleting it consistently over and over its happiest within a certain charge percentage which is why it recommends that you only fill it up - I don't know eighty percent on a daily basis but then if you go to a long trip you can fill it up to the full 310 miles so you do have to play with that a little bit so you can see for daily use we charge it up to roughly two hundred and I don't know 6070 miles you can adjust that as well and then if you go on a trip you can drag this little slider all the way to full like that so that would give you the full 310 miles of range and you can see actually the charging time remains remaining changes depending on what you set the max charge point to so if I go way down here for daily usage and only charge for an hour and five minutes but then if I go all the way up to the full trip mode it would take come on five hours and so you can really adjust the max charge point once again that's to prolong your battery life because if you're constantly going to full and constantly going to empty over an extended period of time your battery percentage and your battery capacity can be reduced so while I can adjust it up and down depending if I'm using it daily or trip I'm going to go back to the max daily point where we had it before so we can go to the supercharger and see how long it'll take there Tommies there's no Tesla charger here we've got the adapter let's try charging it using just a standard Universal yeah once you move it and I'll plug it in over there okay let's unlock the charge port here okay like let's go plug this in to that and see how long or how slow it takes how many miles per hour we get so this is the adapter it just clicks in like so look at that that's pretty straightforward and since the fine folk at Avery here don't charge anything we don't have to have a credit card or a charging tip to actually use this we just plug it in using our handy dandy little adapter all right can you open it up alright plugged in there's 209 volts okay 11 hours 30 only 3 miles per hour oh seven it's going up eight nine eight oh that's much slower maybe it's being bobble next by the adaptor or something 11 so the generic one is slower than the Tesla then the Tesla Sparks was Tesla one it's out 37 miles per hour Wow check this out just blinking yeah kind of like white yeah I think means that this restricted charging okay so those tricks are charging right there that's blinking like this go and supercharge it we've got a bunch of superchargers near us of course the one that's closest is four miles away in Boulder Colorado that's at our local mall so what do you say we go supercharge and maybe have a little bit of a coffee while we wait for it to do it because we should be able to get it close to what 100 miles and maybe what half hour 40 minutes more than that really more than I mean get closer 270 in depending on how full we are 170 miles in half an hour all right yeah let's go that's good let's go to the mall [Music] pammi so we're heading to the supercharger at our local mall the navigation says it's 5.4 miles away and 11 minutes yes how many super charging stations are there in North America the superchargers live in stations are like gas stations and each station has a number of supercharger for second because this is what makes Tesla so magic right Titans Gordon oh we went fast too fast too fast 0-60 in five four point five seconds for this dual Boulder long range yep the superchargers live in these stations and I wrote the number down because it's a big number in North America there are 1441 super charging stations with nearly 13,000 superchargers and Tesla's building more and more of those so there really is a large network in North America and even around the globe of these places where you can go to take your car for a level-3 charging which is essentially really really fast charges in a short amount of time I'm gonna try this navigation off because I know how to get there yep but it does show you all the superchargers right within our area yeah so these little red dots as I start to zoom out yeah these are all superchargers you can see a zoom out to the US yeah there are a ton of them and they're located around metropolitan areas yeah but even some of them like in Nevada are just in the middle of nowhere because they want to place them in a way that you can drive from place to place within the supercharger network yeah actually I test this website you can go in and you can plan on the trip and it'll tell you how long it'll take you to make that trip given how many superchargers along the route but you can see I mean there's a huge concentration in California a huge concentration on the East Coast a lot in the middle we even have some in Canada and even a number down here in Mexico toward Mexico City so they're really all over the North America here I don't know and let me show you the globe it won't but they're across the world as well now the cool thing about the superchargers is they give you a tremendous amount of energy in a short period of time but you do pay for it yeah yeah you do pay for it and then after you supercharge it tells you how much money you spent right so Tesla says that in North America currently the price is about 28 cents per kilowatt okay and there are two ways that Tesla actually charges you depending on the regulations of the area they like to charge you by kilowatt or a kilowatt hour that's like the way they they they they hope to charge you yeah but in some places they actually charge you per minute yeah it also depends on when you're charging because if you're charging like we are in the middle of the day electrical prices in the grid are more expensive so they charge you more whereas I think if you're charging at night it's a little bit cheaper yes these are getting more and more busy these supercharged stations so if you spend too long in a supercharger and you leave your car sitting there idle you know essentially not charging you can actually be billed for every idle minute that you spend over if there are a lot of cars at that supercharger so how many cars are ours can you take a look at the Apple is doing there are seven out of ten that are available in Boulder and I can just click on the supercharger and it will send it directly to the navigation cool thing about the supercharger is yes it gives you a ton of power but the bad thing about a supercharger is Tesla recommends that you don't use it as your primary way of charging which makes sense because think of all the Tesla's that are in a given region if they all went to the supercharger as their only primary charging needs there would be a huge overflow of cars plus if you continued to use a supercharger time after time after time I've read that it will actually decrease the longevity of your battery slightly yeah the other thing I want to say is you might be wondering exactly how testability and we have our credit card on record with Tesla so they just bill our credit card basically and I think actually here charging yeah our last trooper super charging session cost two dollars and 25 cents that was on April 24 so here's our super charger oh look at that Tesla forty minute charge maximum so we can only charge for 40 minutes there should be plenty which should be plenty let's take one on this side which one do you want to go to one B maybe this one over here okay so same procedure just a much much much shorter wire here cable here okay come on baby forty minutes to our max charge point there so here averaging 90 100 200 200 miles per hour it's the only way this cars gonna get to 200 miles per hour by the way that is charging 203 so that number there this is 203 that's the rate is charging and the number to the right is how many miles it's added so there goes one mile into the range so it's going pretty quick actually it's going really quick coffee and talk about what you can do while you're waiting for it to charge [Music] you know Tommy on a cold and rainy day there's nothing better than a well in your case hot chocolate or a hot cappuccino and a big clear bubble oh we go chop down your nose we already in it we're in this clear bubble outside of Starbucks on our local mall the cool thing about Tesla superchargers is that they're usually in places that you want to spend some time back in this case a shopping mall you got Eddie Bauer over there we got the Apple Store in the theater movie theater so yeah you could actually spend some time here and pass the day while you're waiting for it to charge but Tesla has spun up more than just the shopping mall right yeah for sure you can actually play games in the Tesla interface which is really cool now you do the video showing that why don't we cut to that right now now we're the really fun stuff if I click this little Tesla icon here it shows us our Model 3 in the right color you'll notice anytime it shows your Model 3 it's always in the right color with the right wheels which is really cool there's our TfL Tesla 750 2 miles on this one you can see the latest software here your VIN number and then these are the really fun bits that Tesla does and Tessa's the only company I know if it actually does this but these are like little Easter eggs I can make our navigation drive on Mars so I've got a little lunar rover zoom out similar to the planet I don't know why that's useful and of course your car turns into a spaceship because SpaceX this is my favorite one ah the fireplace with realistic crackling sound and if I tap it [Music] smooth jazz yeah and the screen crapped out for some reason we're listening to smooth jazz and then it just died what the heck nothing okay that's the work so we're still have drivability but now the screen has died and it rebooted so there are some glitches still in the screen that they need to figure out it's not a 100% perfect um and we have had this happen probably two or three times now so we have our fireplace we also have whoopee cushion so you can make various passengers in the car fart you can also have it fart when you turn on the turn signal you know so change the type of fart I don't know why you need this but it's there so might as well enjoy it and yeah okay so the the fart mode is pretty fun to play with leave passengers I don't know why that's the thing but it's a thing and then we also have some games so when you're stopped in park you can play a bunch of Atari games so asteroids lunar lander centipede and millipede let's do lunar lander that sounds really fun full screen how does this work push dart oh I get it so you're this little spaceship you have to try to land on the surface gotcha okay so lunar lander I'm really bad at video games you can't tell centipede come on what Bruce Hades will let you do will let you play centipede while you're in the car I'm really bad at this missile command let's see what Missile Command is this is so cool they they even imitate the old-school Atari display here press Start defend cities oh and I'm out of ammunition and then of course lunar lander which we've played with already so Tess is always updating these games to add more it's just a fun little quirk of owning Tesla's is you get all this cool stuff we also have the ability just to draw some quirky stuff if you want so Tesla is constantly improving the screen constantly making it better it's one of the coolest parts the one drawback I would like to have a volume knob at least and then I wish that the speed which displays up here where the park is would come in a better location maybe like out in front of me [Music] so we've been charging now for about 12 minutes that song it took us to walk here and get our coffees and when we started we had 138 miles of range what do we got now we are at a hundred and seventy miles of range that's pretty quick yeah it's really quick now we've leveled out at about 170 to 180 miles per hour which is still extremely impressive and I can of course control but the charging from the app so I can stop charging I can unlock the charge for all from the phone here but we only have three minutes remaining how many kilowatts is a 44 kilowatts 40 43 kilowatt so it goes up and down yeah varies and we're being charged of course for this but you know I was talking to mr. Avery while we were off camera and he said the one thing he likes about his Tesla is that he drives down to Mississippi to visit family every year yeah and then it used to just bomb down there now with the Tesla you can enjoy the trip mark because it forces you to stop of course that's looking on you know the bright side of the equation and other times forcing the stop might be opinion if you try to make up time yeah that's true but if we're being honest guys let's think about the work always on this tummy yeah I know I'm sorry it's just habit where you're always honest you know we used a car maybe like a normal person forty to fifty miles when we use it right so you drive a forty fifty mile commute daily yep right you bring it home you plug it in even at the slow trickle charger for ten hours you get maybe 3040 miles back in and then you can make up the difference in charging yeah sure do I can tell you so what you want to do is you want go the other side over there if you drive your car forty fifty miles a day you charge it for ten hours at night you can get that 40 to 50 miles back even in a trickle charger then make up the difference at a supercharger I wouldn't even need to install that additional plug in our house well guys thanks for watching this has been another episode of the thrifty three and this one is focused on what it's like to live with a model 3 or an electric car in this case and if you have questions and if you're interested in figuring out more about the electric car experience let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer them and do a video just for you as always this Roman and Tommy go back to tal car comm for the latest and greatest in Tesla reviews look we're almost at 180 Wow so but another 10 minutes and then we're gonna have that thing up to over 200 miles yeah it's going like stink it's doing like stink all right let's enjoy our coffees [Music]
