Do you film a scene like Hollywood?

this video is brought to you by canva hollywood has a process five steps to filming a scene block light rehearse tweak film so we have a script it always starts with a script in this case a poorly formatted script that i wrote myself just for fun in this video you'll see how we shot this scene using hollywood's proven five-step method and you can use this method too let's get started [Music] and we are going to block the script now that means we're going to talk about where our characters are going to be at a specific time while the script is being read what's going on here this is mal this is alex and they do not want to be here i put together this script because uh it's a good opportunity for some back and forth dialogue there's some inserts and i think this is going to be a fairly you know like normally filmed script we're not going for anything fancy here this isn't going to be winning any awards this is to show you how to film a scene it doesn't matter if our our actors know all of their lines at this point for the next 10 minutes we followed the script and blocked out where the actors would be when think of this like a play-by-play for the entire scene during this process we realized that some of the lines i had written wouldn't really play well on screen and changes were made to the script on the fly well could there be you know that last line something that happened to your laptop like that you're losing control these actors are taking over what do you do that's okay this is collaborative they're changing the lines and that's okay i understand that my words aren't written in stone like quentin tarantino if you want do you want us to just say it off the page we're discovering something here and that's totally fine my pride is not hurt it's important to remember that this is a creative collaborative process everyone can give their opinion but in the end the director has the final say we continued to work together to craft the scene and when the blocking was done it was time for lighting [Music] if you watch this channel you know how much i love lighting stuff but lighting a scene without a crew all by yourself is a whole different matter altogether okay so what we have here is an aputure 600d and this is a bright light it's basically going to be like an hmi light coming through the window it's going to make the walls and the texture of the room be a little bit more interesting and this lighting is going to bring up my ambient exposure look at this lighting it's so simple now this is why we light spaces not faces when we're filming a scene and actors need to move around this is great because now our actors can go anywhere they want another reason why it's nice to have the light coming through the window like this is sometimes it's a cloudy day cloud comes over the sun all of a sudden the room gets a lot darker in the middle of filming your continuity is ruined having lights through the window is a great way to maintain some continuity now that the lighting is set we're going to rehearse and hone in our action making the scene exactly the way we want it to we're going to work out all the minutia and so we began to rehearse the scene little did i realize that the entire process was going to fall apart before my eyes and that i was going to experience a mental breakdown at any moment so rehearse is over and there's shadows going on also mal's face is just too bright here i'm realizing that we need to bring the light around this side coming through this whoa whoa whoa what i don't really have the script done i don't even know what my actions are anymore we changed them can we rehearse more please thomas the lighting is the most important part to me the lighting needs to come around this side through that window so i'm going to do that right now you got to light the scene but you got to give yourself a second chance you got to realize that once you hone in that action you might have to change things up and that's totally okay soon after we realized that we would need a whole other light set up in the backyard to make the scene work honestly right now as the director of photography i'm failing in my job word of advice don't be so dramatic like me on set play it cool even if you make mistakes after all that work it was finally time to film the first shot i think you can stop messing around in the kitchen help me with this new script wow good morning to you too we're actually filming out of order right now we filmed the beginning of the script on the wide now we're doing the ending of the script on the wide then we're going to go in for our coverage we're not filming the whole thing on a wide because these guys aren't professional actors they don't have their lines memorized anyway beautiful day be ashamed if something happened to your laptop you sure you want to do that we have finished our wide shots now we're going to come in and we're going to get our coverage we're gonna get our back and forth we're gonna start with mal camera is rolling look this is important some of us actually work around here and take our job seriously hold on any stir except that we're starting from the top and camera is rolling where are we starting from start time that's the second line no you know second line okay start from the second line wow good morning to you too finished filming our standard coverage now it's time for the inserts i'm gonna go to a tighter lens what's interesting here is we shot the scene wide then we went in for the coverage now we're doing the inserts what if we did the inserts first that would be stupid right you want to get usable footage in case it all goes to crap the fire alarm goes off and everyone has to run out of the room at least you got something right that's why you go wide medium and then tights so these are not as important i could cut the scene without these inserts but they're gonna make the scene that much better [Music] we're finally done filming so what we did is we blocked we lit we rehearsed we tweaked and we shot the darn thing five steps that hollywood does now as you watch the video that we just filmed you're going to be able to see it like a director sees it like an actor sees it someone who is there for the whole process i promise you if you start filming scenes you're never going to watch movies
