I like Bill Maher generally, hes just one of those guys thats too old to "get it". He doesnt like comic books so he thinks anyone that does is a child. Ok gramps. Im not gonna stress about it. I know a lot of boomers that were the same way. When they were kids teenagers that read comic books were nerdy types who couldnt get girls so they somehow deduce that if you enjoy comic books and arent hiding it somehow equates to preferring comic books over pussy. They cant understand how someone could like and have both.

Ive dealt with guys like him that felt the same way about shit like pro wrestling, movie memorabilia, etc. They are just interests. And unlike when they were kids, more recent generations admire when you arent ashamed of your interests. They are just too old to get it and honestly arent even worth responding too.

I mean we enjoy comic books and comic book movies, hes been arguing the same politics for over 30 years. Whos really the child?

this is Bill MA the host of real time a show that I can't really be bothered to pretend to be interested in now bill has some strong words to say about comic books superhero movies and the people who like those kinds of things and today that's what we're gonna be looking at part one Bill's points like what are the actual things he says Bill Stas is rant by making his intentions very clear which is actually really good like it's really useful to me when people do that tonight's editorial it's about Stan Lee who if you missed it died in November I posted a blog that was in no way an attack on mr. Lee but took the occasion of his death to express my dismay at people who think comic books are literature and superhero movies are great cinema and who in general are stuck in an everlasting childhood throughout is a tutorial bill makes the same few points again and again and again points like comic books are not literature other people tweeted things like I learned about social justice and racial tolerance by reading comic books okay but now you have pubic hair read James Baldwin read Toni Morrison read Michael Eric Dyson superhero movies aren't valuable cinema every superhero movies the same thing a person who doesn't have powers gets them has to figure out how they work and then has to find a glowy thing the superhero media in general is childish comics are for kids and the if you're an adult who likes them you need to grow up you can if you want like the exact same things you liked when you were 10 but if you do you need to grow up bragging that you're all about the Marvel Universe is like boasting that your mother still pins your mittens tear sleeves of all of the points he's making this is the one he really hits in the hardest he really wants you to know that he considers this whole thing to be childish and beneath him and that if you're an adult who likes it you need to grow up I'm sorry but if you are an adult playing with superhero dolls I'm sorry I mean collectible action figures why not go all the way and drive to work on a big wheel like I don't even do those things nor would I'd be the kind of person to go I'm actually their action figures and I still rolled my eyes when he said that just because of how this whole bit he's doing is about judging people for the simple things they enjoy why not right to work on a big wheel you know what I say yeah why not if that makes you happy going for it there's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes I also find it pretty funny that he tries to say again and again he's not actually directing any hate towards Stanley I posted a blog that was in no way an attacked on mr. Lee I'm not glad Stanley is dead I'm sad you're alive director Kevin Smith accused me of taking a shot with no shots are [ __ ] necessary except again my shot wasn't at Stanley it was at you know grown man who still dressed like kids no I'm not firing any shots at Stanley I'm just saying that his work is without value and that anyone who likes it is probably a [ __ ] man baby that's not that's not me saying anything bad about Stanley how could you possibly have confused that with with me saying something bad about Stanley you know although I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here I honestly do believe that he's dense enough to think that he's actually not saying anything bad about Stanley but you know what I think that part where he says he's not happy Stan's dead he's just sad you're alive it's like actually a pretty well-written joke and would have been really funny if it was coming out of a mouth instead of an anus in short bill thinks that comic books cannot be valuable literature can we stop pretending that the writing in comic books is so good oh please oh that's nothing you stand by the way even the less is his life's work shut up superhero movies aren't valuable cinema and superhero fans just have some growing up to do you need to grow up part two let's talk about superhero movies for a bit I could also talk about comics but I know more about the movies so let's talk about the movies that's part two now allow me to speak briefly about superhero movies as a whole over the course of the past 20 years superhero movies have become one of the single most popular subgenres in the world and as a result of that there are of course a [ __ ] ton of them and yeah of course it will be stupid to deny that a lot of superhero our target other kids and that a lot of superhero movies are completely shallow however thanks to the genres immense popularity we've had scores of creatives all giving their own take on it from Logan to misfits to Deadpool all the way to the [ __ ] Captain Underpants movie this is one of those diverse genres of film there is a genre at this point is so diverse that the only linking thread between some of these movies is that a character in them has superpowers [ __ ] hey not all of them even have that in common to imply that these movies can't be great cinema is to imply there's something inherently unintellectual about a superhero but if you had the greatest movie script of all time in front of you that all you'd have to do is add a character with superpowers and suddenly it's devoid of all intellectual value does it have amazing character writing does it have profound things to say about we live in a society if I can clearly orient it towards adults [ __ ] you it has superpowers in it that means is for kids and if you like it you're a child now let's say you were just talking about the Sam Raimi spider-man trilogy I think you'd actually have a like to stand on when you say that people who like it need to grow up I don't think you'd be right I think you'd be being a massive [ __ ] but I think you'd have a leg to stand on given that the trilogy is child-friendly and you could definitely call them family films when you tried to make this kind of point about superhero media as a whole the only kind of people you're gonna have laughing along with you are people who are ignorant of the fact that for every spider-man 2 there's a Logan that for every Catwoman there's an Incredibles and that some of the most influential comics of all time are clearly not intended for children which takes us to part three [ __ ] off [ __ ] now bill if you or either of your fans that are young enough to turn a computer on end up seeing this I would just like to make it clear that I'm not calling you a [ __ ] because you're insulting my comic book films calling you a [ __ ] because you're acting like one you're judging people for the things that they enjoy it's none of your business how someone unwinds when they come home on the big wheel from a day at work if people like watching superhero films hell if people like collecting action figures that's fine they can do whatever they enjoy they don't need to grow up to please you but if you want to talk about people acting childish I find it incredibly our like that you spent half your time going oh these people need to grow up and the other half of your time going the things I like a much more mature than the things you like the things you like for baby I'm a real grown-up because the books I read don't have pictures you know I've not heard anyone make that argument since I was six yeah here you are doing it telling other people they need to grow up what the [ __ ] when I was a kid my mom used to walk with me to school and first this was because I was a child and needed supervision but later on she carried on walking with me cuz she got a job right across the road from where I went to school by the time I turned eleven yes I know that that is what I looked like when I was 11 I started to get really self-conscious about this I thought all the other kids are gonna see me walking into school with my mum what are they gonna think are they gonna think I need her to walk me into school and I started running ahead of her so that I wouldn't be seen walking with her as I arrived at school but as I grew up I realized that worrying about things like that is just a bit silly and immature there's nothing embarrassing about being seen with your mum abandoning what you've loved since you were a child because you're worried it's gonna make you look childish isn't a part of being an adult it's a part of being insecure if for a second we assume that all superhero media is for kids despite the fact that it isn't then having the capacity to enjoy it doesn't make you immature and anyone who says it does can [ __ ] off one of my favorite films of all time is the Iron Giant a movie that's very clearly a kids film and my appreciation for that piece of media doesn't make me a child but one thing that would be pretty childish would be for me to not give the film a chance because I know it's for kids and then to tell anyone who does like it that you know it's just for kids right why are you 11 like Bill what's your next book gonna be about men who wear pink stuff pink is for girls I'm an adult to sum up Bill grow up you whiny [ __ ] baby before I go I'd just like to say a huge thank you to my patrons I always worry that I don't thank you beautiful people enough so I'm gonna try and change that in the future other than that I hope you've enjoyed and a second there are gonna be some links on screen to some more content including a playlist of four sports videos like this one I've made in the past I'll see you on Sunday for part two of the cinemasins breakdown I hope you've enjoyed Oh goodbye [Music] there's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes
