[Music] i know i wanted to be giant but i don't know why am i crawling around like an animal oh i'm dressed like hannibal lecter this is going to work right this is gonna work why wouldn't this work [Music] this is a test and i'm taking a test this is a test of the audio is it on what's up dudes today we're gonna be making some giant diy wall decor for this giant empty wall for me to take on a diy project now it needs to be simple minimal materials minimal tools minimal opportunities to screw it up so today's project we are returning to something that is simple something that truly anyone can do i'm gonna do the project in my living room i decided which is a little hectic but i'm gonna make it work look how like heavenly this one illuminated shoulder is with this sunbeam coming through one divine shoulder we've got heavenly light streaming in from the windows i bought a new staple gun and today is gonna be a good freaking day let's kick it just so you guys know i never test out my diy projects before i film them we're doing it live so i hope this goes well but really we never know and in a way that's okay because i might say that the most compelling tool used in any of my diy projects is the chance of failure last but not least to put away this pile of clothes that i'm selling on poshmark which is funny because today's video is made possible by poshmark what a coincidence who organized this i've had a poshmark account i think since 2016. poshmark is the easiest way to sell items in your closet ever since i lived in tiny apartments in new york i got really big into just having a minimal closet i wear the same darn sweatpants every day anyway i don't need 100 pairs of slacks not just at spring but really every season i like to do spring cleaning just minimize my closet it makes me feel better about the clutter i'm keeping somebody else can put it to good use and poshmark is an amazing way to do that you can get a cute outfit for easter brunch or some other non-religious outfit of your choosing i highly suggest that you download the app follow me on poshmark you can shop my closet check all your favorite brands and see what's up some of the things that i posted girl i wore these maybe twice maybe twice these are awesome because they're really high-waisted legging shorts i probably wore maybe three times they're brand freaking new another set of leggings this one is like a cute little cross over waist you want that snatched little nasty waist why did i say nasty nasty wasn't the word i'm looking for literally never worn it it's the kind of dress that really defines where your boobs are in case you have trouble locating them i literally never wore it okay i think it just ended up not being the right color me it was too light i like to wear brighter colors crop button down it's super short i am selling it because i shrink it in the wash it says a two but it's like a zero now this little like sheer flowery guy just put like a little cami underneath of it underneath of it and then boom you're cute as heck workout top it has a built-in bra it's just the wrong size i had some kind of like aneurysm where for a moment i thought i lived in a world where i was a c-cup i'm not and then this girl do you recognize this shirt i accidentally ordered two of these i'm truly too lazy to ever return clothes if you want to match me as much as i want you to match me then download the poshmark app check out this shirt i'm literally modeling it for you right now i actually didn't even plan that that worked out well oh i also have one more pair of shoes i forgot girl forgot about these they're from madewell and they're in like beautiful condition i love these i just have too many mule clogs so these madewell meal clogs are going on going on the posh thanks to poshmark for making this video possible and paying my rent today we thank you we thank you for that download poshmark in the usa canada australia and india just use the link in the description box and shop from my closet or your favorite brands yeah thanks to poshmark the end so i came up with this project because i wanted to fill this giant giant wall as much as i love a gallery wall a bunch of pieces there's something a little like statelier and classic about doing just one giant wall art piece when you enter the apartment this is the first thing you see right away that's something that i always think about with a room design what is the first thing you see when you enter the room what is the wall that you first face where does your eye go first you want to make that a really strong first impression i hate doing those stupid snaps so much do you want to see what it's like filming it that's annoying just lay out nicely oh that's a lot of dirt and debris i should probably shake that off somewhere not on the couch okay let's turn it over dude come on okay pretty good okay first and foremost i want to decide the exact dimensions of this guy i know i want it to be giant but i don't know how giant i think the couch is about eight feet wide it's gonna be big four feet that's five feet that's six feet that's pretty enormous let's see what that's like wait how do i do this well i can't reach it okay so that's six by six ow i think it's too big it goes like all the way to the ceiling almost that's too much about five four okay i think that's what i want yeah that's more the dimensions i want i'm just gonna leave that up there don't feel like taking it down now i've laid this canvas down protect the floors and i bought this canvas is going to be the actual backdrop of our artwork and i've measured out a five four by five four canvas but i'm gonna cut and leave a couple extra inches so that we can easily attach it to our frame okay so this is just a canvas drop cloth that you can get at any hardware store i feel like it's kind of hard to see i've got a canvas drop cloth on top of a canvas drop cloth it's a cool texture why am i crawling around like an animal some people like this canvas color might actually just work for them just the way it is but i'm going to change the color of it i'm going to paint this canvas sheet the same exact color that i painted the wall so that the backdrop of it kind of blends in and it's going to let the colors on top really pop [Music] okay so far so good i would say my biggest revelation so far is that i really need to tie back my hair but what am i going to walk all the way to the bathroom and get a hairband and then use it that sounds like a lot of effort okay we're gonna move on to making the frame for the canvas i just picked up four one by twos if you want to go for like maybe a more boho look with your piece of wall decor you could do without a frame and keep it more like a tapestry girl i love a frame i love structure i love boundaries so i'm gonna do a frame and we're gonna cut these boards down using a miter box kit this is a kit you can get online you get at any hardware store it'll come with like a little handsaw and this miter box it provides guidelines for cutting at a 45 degree angle i don't have enough space [Applause] there's our mark we want to cut something like that so we're going to line it up here and if we place our saw right in there let's not saw my finger off how about that it'll give us that 45 degree cut they're going to come together at an angle kind of like that it's just gonna look real more legit people are gonna be like where'd you get that corner did oh dang okay let's do the rest what a sexy little piece of wood that is i remember before i did youtube always asking why why people hold up their hands behind stuff i i'd only ever seen it with makeup tutorials people always put their hand behind the makeup and i was like why do everybody do that and i remember googling it like alone on my computer late at night in case you don't understand it's when you're trying to get the camera to focus usually on a close-up if you block the whole background it'll focus up close i hope i just solved a mystery for some people trying to pay it forward [Music] um what was i saying though what was i possibly going to say okay we are going to paint you don't have to paint do whatever you want live your life follow your dreams i'm going to paint mine i also want to say i feel like there's nothing more fun than this tiny little paintbrush oh wait i feel like i did this in the wrong order i should probably put the frame together first hmm okay forget everything you just saw forget everything that just happened instead we're going to assemble the frame first and then paint it it actually really doesn't make a big deal but i like to make things complicated and we're going to do that using some wood glue can you please focus thank you wood glue is the most powerful substance on earth it's a sort of magic that no one physics can't explain it i am going to use a nail gun fashion glass is very necessary these are pretty dirty the nails can just help hold your frame together while the glue dries the glue is much stronger than the nails are which is again wild physics doesn't apply to wood glue it's from its own universe so if you don't have a nail gun just use wood glue and make sure to like kind of clamp your two you know wood pieces together while they dry but since i don't feel like clamping anything i'm just going to use the nail gun [Music] okay i took a lunch break we let the frame dry and now i think we're ready for some of the final steps we're gonna put this canvas on the frame which i'm very excited about because i got a new staple gun to play with i'm gonna tell you what my biggest problem so far is that i don't have enough room in my living room that i just refuse to move so let's see if we have space to turn this around okay i flipped the frame over now we're gonna get into the only power tool i do recommend here which is this even a power tool it's a staple gun i don't know if that qualifies but it is a tool that is powerful which is why i'm going to put my glasses on even while i read the directions because you never know what's going to happen remove pusher rod when i do that it's a pusher rod saying it like it's obvious what the is the pusher rod pusher rod dude move the pusher rod which way that goes that way all right okay and put this in i don't remember how it came out how did i don't know i don't understand this doesn't make any sense what are all those steps about okay it's not going that efficiently making sure that the staple exit is pointing away from you that makes sense okay let's just see what happens that's annoying oh my god oh my god for a moment i was like is this canvas too small panic attack it's not it's the right size okay so the most important thing here which i have not figured out how i'm gonna do this is to make sure we want the canvas to be as taut as possible i'm not sure what the best way to do that is i'm going to try some stuff and see what works hmm should we start in a corner should we start in the center what is the best way to do this no i honestly don't know let's just do something that already feels not taught no don't like it i like it [Music] dude my back okay let's see oh dude that's good that actually worked shocking okay it looks good and i'm completely shocked now i'm just gonna put in some reinforcement staples for the rest of it oh my gosh i'll tell you what my back hurts i'm sweating don't look at my sweat stains i'm gonna tell you something right now i'm so tired in every diy project you're like this is gonna work right this is gonna work why wouldn't this work why wouldn't this work i can't think of any reason this wouldn't work but are my sugars are going to work and then in each diy project there is a moment that you get to where you're like oh th this is why it's not going to work out this is why this project doesn't make sense and this was that moment and let me tell you what there is another bell curve in the diy project timeline where you got energy energy energy energy energy and then it's just done and when that energy dips i would say my safety precautions also happen to dip and so right here what we just experienced in getting this beautiful canvas taught as heck was a meeting of all of those moments energy is gone safety precautions are going out the window and i'm starting to realize that this project might not work however i think we've made it through i i feel like we made it through the storm y'all we're through the worst of it freaking taut can i even turn this around i'm gonna do this how can i do this please somebody help me whoa dude i'd say it's freaking taut so what i ended up doing i did the first staples okay this is where we point reverse so hard i did the staples on the corners where's the other corner and then started going adding more to each side and as i i can't point in reverse and as i added more to each side i would take out some of those first staples were kind of placeholders and i would take them out and then tighten them so it's progressively getting tighter and tighter with each round if that makes sense i'm seeing a little lump like right there but i'm pretty sure that we can cover that when we put the swatches on which brings me to the best freaking part of this the swatches is that crooked yes can you not be could you do me this favor and not be crooked so the way this whole project started is that i have from my interior design work you know a million swatches and i love them just as they are i have unconditional love for swatches like i don't need this to become a couch i love it just like this i love to keep them and hold on to them and treasure them and i love them all i feel like this is what it is to be a parent like i love each of them just the way they are everything that makes them unique they can never mess up in my eyes and i'll never abandon them i love these swatches so much that i was like they're art to me i want to make them into a proper piece of artwork and i knew i wanted to do a really big artwork and i thought oh i broke a nail and i thought i know what i can do with these swatches so west elm like a lot of retailers lets you order swatches for free i think you can order like 15 swatches for free and then i had swatches from blue dot i have wallpaper swatches i have a whole bunch so i collected all my favorite ones and then i did want a couple more just to experiment on my way to get some swatches i decided i'm gonna go to west elm because i know they let you take like 10 or 15 swatches for free i feel nervous about going into the store and just like taking 15 swatches even though it's allowed i feel like i'm doing something illegal i feel like the swatch police are going to be like that's all you came here for 14th street in dc on a weekend there is nowhere to park i'll tell you that much oh i'm never going to make it oh is that a parking spout nope it's out of our restaurant yeah can i fit there don't hit me i'll kill you hit me and i'll kill you okay i'm gonna go get some squats squatches i think i said squatches i just want to get as many swatches as possible which by the legislation of west elm is not allowed what do they do if i take too many scratches i keep saying squatches [Music] oh girl we made it we made it out i feel like they're going to call the police i think i took like 30. i got some good ones the west stone police they're going to lock me up with wooden beads so you can go a lot of routes with the swatches you can choose a color palette infinite things you can do with them they're just like a piece of craft material ultimately it's nice to choose ones that have like some meaning for you this was a wallpaper from the project i did with my mom and they're also all different sizes the ones from blue dot are way bigger than the ones from west elm but i don't think i'm going to cut these the bigger ones down i think i'm going to leave them as is i kind of like the variation to make it a little like offbeat oh jk gorilla glue i honestly don't know if this is going to work but we'll see okay i'm going to remove this cardboard that they're all attached to but i did consider leaving it because that says like all the material details and stuff which i kind of love because i personally have an attachment to interior design but in the end i just i've concluded i'm gonna remove them but it could be cool to also leave them oh y'all should follow me on instagram i do little sneak peeks on my projects and stuff like that i was just sitting here arranging all my little swatches into grids and just thinking about how perfection is like probably the greatest inhibitor of progress and also maybe of joy and i think about this a lot during projects because there's lots of times where perfection is nice but it's certainly not going to keep me from doing projects and from doing something creative i like things to feel organic and mostly i like them to feel joyful and when i find myself struggling with the need to be perfect it means that i don't try new things i don't take risks because if you're trying something new you're gonna suck at it you're gonna suck at first and if i need to be perfect with everything i do then i'm never going to be learning and i'm never going to be exploring when you're hardworking and ambitious it's really easy to fall into the trap of like want to be perfect at everything and sometimes i feel like if i just learn enough and i reflect enough like i'll never make another mistake spoiler it hasn't turned out to be true and then i get really disappointed every time i make a mistake so if you're someone who relates to that like this is the universe telling you or it's at least me telling you don't let a need for perfection keep you from trying something new being bad at something new making some mistakes being sloppy like that's what life is life is in the mess i think making a mess is maybe maybe a love language a self-love language all right let's do this thing now i just need to trim off can't point in reverse just need to trim off the excess on the edges and then attach some hardware so we can hang it on the wall i have crazy glue all over my fingers and it's driving me crazy crazy like glue one might say these little things just hammer straight onto the back of the frame we can hang it on the wall oh my god okay dude i just came home from a workout i've had this up on the wall for a day but i want to change the frame i want to change the frame color i just decided and then i think i would love it more i will love it more i'm just going to paint it white this is an emotional painting i'm gonna say that time of the month whatever you want to call it i just like shouldn't have been let out into public i was just being like very anti-social and i don't say anti-social like i didn't want to talk to people i mean anti-social the way that like the dsm diagnoses it like like bad behavior that is unsafe to the public that's the kind of day i had yesterday and then today i was like okay i can't be letting your people today i'm just gonna stay at home and not talk to anybody and that was good that was correct but it left me just staring at that wall decor all day trying to decide if something was wrong with it and what i could change about it this is the solution of my problems i've decided what is what's the stain okay interesting oh i'm dressed like hannibal lecter i think this is mostly his outfit it's pretty much oh am i dressed like hannibal lecter i am get out of here i feel like this is one of the more constructive routes for my pmsing to take actually it's not pmsing it's straight on emming right now pms is like i'm gonna cry at some dog commercial or a single tick tock featuring a baby and then when we're straight on emmy i'm just furious at everyone pretty much i can't be allowed into public i don't i don't do nice things so i'm gonna paint this and that's gonna be a non-damaging place to put my energy [Music] i literally feel so much better right now even though i know i'm also crazy now i feel like that calms it down a little bit i'm at peace i'm gonna shoot some reveal shots tomorrow when the sun's back up and um we'll see what i did is you guys that's the whole project if you enjoyed this video remember
