[Music] hi welcome back to the channel so you guys know how much i love to thrift shop and how i love finding pieces that either i can flip and turn into something completely different or sometimes i find pieces that are just had a little bit of a rough life and need a new life so i'm in texas my mom and i went thrift shopping and antique shopping a few weeks ago and i found some pieces that we could do some fun stuff too also later in the video i'm going to be showing you how i used my cricut explore air 2 to do some fun stuff because you guys have been asking for projects with the cricut so i'm super excited to show you some things that i've been playing around with it's all hardwood do we like this with new handles redone it's obviously like so messed up on top forty dollars not horrible what do you guys think look at these chairs they're what ten dollars a piece eighteen for two we're gonna redo them i think they're so cool look at the back leg shape too the whole back is just really pretty with new fabric of course it's gonna be tricky but we're gonna do it the first three flip that i want to start with is this cabinet i loved its size and i thought that it would be perfect for maybe like the guest cottage or or somewhere in all of these spaces that we're working on at the cottage house and i don't always come across hardwood furniture at thrift stores so i decided to pick it up and i feel like all it really needs is a new life maybe some sanding a fresh coat of paint and like a really pretty color or some kind of something to make it more unique and more special part of the cottage that i have been daydreaming about is the kitchen i love the color of the cabinetry in this kitchen it's from porter's paint and the color is stormy and porter's paint is an australian branded paint and i couldn't get it in time found a similar color in the same kind of gray with a blue green undertone and i'm super excited to kind of test that color paint on this cabinet so that we can see if we like it for the cottage so first step for this cabinet i'm going to take off all the knobs all of the hardware remove the doors and remove the drawer outside so all of the pieces are separate so that we can prep them for painting this is the first thing that i do for any kind of cabinet upcycle anything that i'm gonna paint or restain i just want all of the pieces separate after taking the hinges off it looks like they painted over the brass hinges which is so disappointing so i definitely want to strip that paint off since there's really minimal damage to the cabinet i just really want to smooth out the surface i want to remove any of the sealer that's on the cabinet so that the paint will stick really well so i'm just going to use a circular palm sander that my dad had and some fine grit sandpaper fine grit sandpaper isn't very strong it's not super abrasive so it won't scratch up the cabinet when i'm really just trying to smooth out any blemishes and remove a sealer or finish that's on top of the paint right now so after sanding the whole cabinet down you can see it's really dusty so i'm taking a dry cloth not wet just dry to remove all of the sanding dust and debris so that all of that junk doesn't get in our paint because that would be really bad since this cabinet was previously painted up like almost black color so it was super dark and i'm also using a darker color i'm opting not to prime it with any primer but if your cabinet is just raw wood or you're going to be going with a lighter color i would definitely recommend priming the cabinet first and my favorite primer is the bin zinzer primer so if you need a prime use that one do i want to keep the wood on the inside because i think it's such a pretty toned wood but i was like wait i need i need your advice so i asked you on instagram and already the majority of you guys are saying leave the wood so that's what i was thinking too on the edges they didn't paint it very well so i'm going to create a clean line with some frog tape so that it looks purposeful that i left the wood you guys i love this color it's going to be darker obviously once it dries it's got that kind of greenish blue undertone let me know in the comments what you guys think of this as a bottom cabinet color somewhere whether it's in the guest cottage or the main i don't know so for all the edge work i'm just using an angled brush so that i can get into all of the cracks but other than that i'm using the roller foam brush so i ended up doing two coats on everything and it has a really great coverage so i'm gonna let that dry really well overnight and then in the morning i'm gonna go back over it with a poly acrylic sealer i feel like the key to doing any piece of furniture or revamping it is just having the right tools you have a good primer a quality paint and then go over it with several layers of the polycrylic sealer it's like the perfect combination of redoing any piece of furniture the knobs that were on here were not very cute they were pretty basic i wanted something that was more inspired or more unique what do you guys think about these you guys like this with the coloring i don't know that may be a project for the morning but they're too small these were the original knobs so you can kind of see the difference between the two and then i had an idea i was gonna do a diy with the cricut for the next flip but i had a really cool idea so let's why not do it what if we took these original knobs and then made a really cool vinyl decal on the knobs my mom had this idea she's like what if you put like a pretty decal with the cricut on the front of it like a design either here i even thought maybe in the inside the inset on the doors see what i mean the possibilities are endless i have my little assortment of of things that i've been playing with so i was thinking i have this really textured gold vinyl look at this but i also have black it really won't show up very well i feel like we should try this i like that it's really textured so i have the cricut explore air 2 machine and we're using vinyl for this project but qriket has so many different types of materials that you can use the cricut air explorer 2 cuts over a hundred different types of materials from iron-on to vinyl to paper to glitter paper which is thicker and more textured pork and foil even denim it cuts through fabric and poster board their vinyl selection is huge you go in the store and they just have rows and rows and rows and rows and rows of different colors for every type of project it's also so mesmerizing to watch this thing cut too i watch it the whole time that it's going it's cutting out the design that i've been working on in just pure amazement because i spent my whole life cutting by hand using scissors or a knife to kind of like exactly cut around different things and i could never do what this machine can do so here are some of the other things that i've made with iron-on and vinyl and really the possibilities are endless i want to make a stencil like for custom wallpaper that i can you know paint use paint but have the stencil that i can use over and over again i even picked up some tiles from the hardware store i thought it would be so cool to use either the stencil or create a design and use the vinyl and actually stick it directly onto the tile to create a very unique tiled backsplash so the cricut machine and all the tools and the materials are definitely an investment but as soon as you start using it you realize all of the things that you were limited by before and i'm not gonna lie and say that i sat down and i just knew how to use this machine i was actually super intimidated by it because i was like what does this do you guys it's so easy cricket also comes with the cricut design space so you can design everything that you want right there it's in the cloud so you can have it on your mobile device you can have it on your desktop you can access it from anywhere we're going to do these knobs together i'm going to draw a circle first so that i can get an idea of our knob shape so i'm thinking i kind of just want like a very abstract organic shapes in here somehow i don't want it perfect so i'm just gonna do it kind of freehand okay what do you guys think about that i feel like if all of these black areas are gold on here it's kind of cute so i'm going to create a new project on the left hand side bar you'll see upload upload an image select the image type i always tend to pick the more complex one just because i want any really small detail to really show through and then if there's anything weird in your design that you want to erase or get rid of that you don't want to print you can erase it here for us we're just cutting an image and then insert images obviously we we are working with something that's pretty small one and a half inches exactly i'm going to change the width to 1.5 realize that i want a little bit of space around it has more room to kind of get close to the edge of the pattern without getting close to the edge of the paper so you're going to need your vinyl you're also going to need the cricut transfer tape slide it in this way i'm gonna go an inch over what we need voila and slice we're gonna line it up right there on the edge and make sure it's stuck down really well so here's the little dial where you can change your material settings so we want ours at vinyl which is up here we're going to load the sticky sheet into the cricut click this blinking button which will load this mat into the cricut now we're going to click the cricut button that's blinking and watch it cut [Music] okay so we're gonna get it up and then we're gonna peel it off next i'm going to use this little tool i'm going to take everything off of this backing that we don't want to transfer over to our knob so it's going to be the majority of it since our design is a little small i'm going to start using it to make sure that the pieces i want to keep are staying stuck down so i'm just going to kind of press it down like that [Music] and there's our decal ready for our knob here's the sanded knob and here's the color of the drawer so we could do it all that color or brown with the decal which i'm not in love with or we could do like a parchment color with the decal or we just go all green i'm gonna go with the same color we're gonna do it i'm not gonna be bold this time and i do think the decals alone are gonna give it enough character that we don't need to go with another color so now that our knobs are all dry i'm gonna take my decal and also a piece of the transfer tape and this smusher downer tool this is really handy for this type of transfer process peel the transfer tape off of its backing and we're going to smooth it out and press it down really firmly on top of our decal so i'm just going to start at the end squeeze out any air bubbles and making sure that it's really stuck really good down then we're gonna peel the transfer tape off and hopefully our decal comes along with it yes like that gonna center it on the knob as best i can and then since our knob is obviously round we're gonna have to kind of work in sections so i'm gonna make sure that the middle is stuck down really well keep working my way all the way around and then take off the transfer tape wow okay three more to go and then we can assemble a cabinet [Music] for our next thrift flip i love finding uniquely shaped or just pretty mugs at the thrift store so i found these too they're like a light sagey gray green color i may think i was on like a gray green kind of kick they're in perfect condition and i thought it would be fun to do something with the cricket cause look at what i've been using this is my current coffee mug but it's not christmas anymore you guys so i started to play around with writing different words i love to write in script i was like what do i say on my coffee mug maybe i could make one morning beautiful and one straight and clean font for romeo is that weird that i would drink out of a cup that said morning beautiful that i made i don't know so we're gonna be using the permanent vinyl again black text on this color that could be pretty i tend to like script best when it's on the smaller side i think it looks more contemporary and classy that way two is too small i think two and a half would be really good so let's do that resize the image to 2.5 inches wide placing it right on the corner of our mat of course i would like really thin font of course i would i've got a piece of the transfer tape and we're going to do the same that we did on the knobs make sure that the surface of this is really clean i tend to over analyze things being straight so let's hope i can get it straight but it's all stuck down really well using a kind of wiggle back and forth motion as i learned on their tutorials i think i did an okay job what do you guys think [Music] so i also found these chairs correction my mom found these well i saw that okay wait i saw the chairs from afar and she was closer and we were kind of coming into the chairs at the same time and she was like i want these and i'm like no i was like she's like but you can do them and i'm like okay these were a great shape i think that that's why we picked them up it looks like someone had already tried to recover them in a new fabric or do something there's some weird trim on it one of them they abandoned they just kind of gave up i feel like they took the fabric i don't know what happened but they're they definitely need to be recovered found this really pretty heavy textured neutral color she could spice it up with a colored pillow you can see that there's color back here when we found them she loved that this this back was off and stuff and then just having a pillow instead of having it all covered in fabrics this chair was definitely made to have fabric i think it's just gonna look best if we can kind of get rid of this inset and it's not very deep so i think it's possible first step is to pull all of the old staples or remnants of staples out of this little inset and then fill all of the holes with some paintable wood filler so that it just looks really clean and we can keep this kind of open air back like my mom wants for just the style and designs then we're going to sand it down with a heavy grit sandpaper unlike the cabinet flip that we just did where we used a fine grit sandpaper i'm gonna use something pretty heavy because i actually want to get rid of some of the wood and then we'll go back with a finer grit to kind of smooth it out and make sure that there's no scratches or anything that'll show through the paint my mom and i both loved that these chairs were already black they were just kind of beat up so we are going to be spray painting them black again using a satin black by rust-oleum and then once this is all dry we'll use a spray version of the poly acrylic sealer that i really like i like the polycrylic one because it's water-based so it won't turn yellow over time like the oil base does and also it comes in different finishes so you can have matte or satin or semi-gloss or gloss so you can kind of have more control over what the finished product is going to look like and the little helper here to help you say hi to everybody you had a bath and a haircut i think overall standing down the inset was a success i think i could get better at it i mean i went to town on that ledge but i think it looks really good and now we just need to cover it with our pretty fabric so we need to measure how much fabric we need i got a yard and a half so and if you find like stools that you want to recover something recovering the bottom cushion is always easiest because especially when it doesn't have like arms like this because you can just hide the staples underneath so you don't have to figure out a solution for that 33 by 37 so since we have arms on this i'm kind of going to work in sections because i'm going to have to cut around these pieces where the arms come up so i'm going to staple the front underneath first and then work my way through to the back so i'm gonna find the center of this fabric just to make sure that i'm getting it in the center and i'm just gonna make a little bitty slit and i'm gonna use a staple gun to attach it so i'm just gonna start with the first one recaro furniture is definitely an art i've done it a few times and it's just about really working the fabric and getting it where you need it to be getting it laid right so it takes a little bit of figuring out i'm just going to keep cutting this fabric until i can pull it around and also tuck it under so that it doesn't fray that's my plan anyways [Music] like that i mean you just keep like i need to work on this side a little bit you just keep working at it like working at the fabric making sure that it's all smooth that there's no ripples and then on the bottom you can come back with another piece of material like a scrap piece that you have and staple it on top so it cleans up this edge and keeps all these edges down but look [Music] wait [Music] [Music] a summer breeze i hope you guys enjoyed it these thrift flips and i hope it inspires you to just kind of upcycle something that was secondhand and i hope it inspired you to try out some fun diy projects of so many things that you can do with the qriket explore air 2 or the qriket joy or the qriket maker they have so many fun makers that you can use every day i feel like i come up with something else that i could do on the qriket which is really exciting to i feel like that's the best kind of diy tool is when you have it in your back pocket to be like nothing is out of reach for you i'm also giving you guys all of the custom designs that i did for these projects in this video so i'll leave the link down in the description so that you guys can create something really cool we are starting some super fun things over at the cottage from demo to inspiration to design to do also if you guys aren't already subscribed hit that subscribe button and the little bell notification so you know exactly when i upload every sunday you and we will see you guys next week bye guys i think kinsley is sleeping i haven't used this yet what are those i don't know a collection of them i feel like
