hi everyone this is Kevin with Oso DIY welcome to my youtube channel at my first video so the guys over at the martyr maker podcast Ben Mike and Chris set out a challenge to build something I have only one sheet of plywood so I think about the challenge I thinking about plywood and the characteristics of it I want to build something that was really gonna highlight and showcase the plywood layers so I decided to make a coffee table with a herringbone pattern and legs that would really highlight the grain I picked up some Baltic birch plywood and it was actually my first time working with Baltic birch since it costs a little more than regular plywood but it's definitely a lot nicer start cutting down the sheet into more manageable sizes and then started ripping it down into strips the strip's measure 1 and 1/8 inches wide which is actually the thickness of the table [Music] you [Music] [Music] so I started to glue up here and I use a straight piece of wood to glue up against to make sure everything else was as square as possible since all the pieces after will be reference off these two first pieces when I got to the edges of the table I tried to avoid using Brad nails and instead use these Rutger bandy clamps so when I go to cut the table the size I wouldn't hit the Brad nails which I later did anyways here I'm filling up the gaps with wood filler and there were plenty of gaps to be filled I used this little straight cutting jig I built a while back to cut the edges I took multiple passes with the circular saw to prevent binding and tear out to round over the edges of the table I used a quarter inch roundover bit which I didn't have so quick trip to Rockler and I picked up one of these again I took many passes to prevent Tara [Music] I got a little Tarot in a couple places but a little bit of glue and the bendy clamp and everything was fixed the table needed tons of sanding so I picked up one of these Ryobi belt Sanders and spending a whole afternoon sanding this thing down flat with a top pretty much done a design de Lakes to have a 20 degree angle and a height of about 16 inches I drew up a template on some MDF and cut it out on the bandsaw the leg is comprised of two pieces and Here I am tracing the inner piece of the leg and figuring out how I want to lay out the plywood pattern [Music] [Music] [Music] I glued up the pieces for the leg and an angle to give it an angular pattern then I trace the template onto the legs to cut out the legs I made this tapering jig to get the angles on the feet I just cut slowly and slowly snug up on the line to attach the two pieces of the legs I use this doweling jig from Rockler I have a link to all the stuff I used in the description below also cut out this angle piece of wood to help clamp the two pieces together like the tabletop I used the quarter inch roundover bit to round over at the edges for the inside edges I used a 3/8 inch roundover to give it a different look and angle [Music] everything was then sanded smooth working from 80-grit all the way up to 220 grit to attach the lakes to the top I used a Forstner bit to draw a recess then drilled all the way through four bolts to slide into I use bolts and threaded inserts that way I can attach and detach the legs without worrying about stripping the wood [Music] the threaded inserts were screwed in and had added some epoxy for extra strength which I forgot to film I finished off the table with two coats of satin wipe-on poly and that was pretty much it this table was different a lot of fun to build I learned a lot of new things and tried out a lot of new techniques I had never done before and special thanks to the guys over at the martyr maker podcast mike ben and chris for putting on this plywood challenge it was awesome and definitely inspiring to see what everyone made if you all enjoyed this video please like and subscribe and share this video with your family and friends I'll be putting out more videos of my future builds so stay tuned for more info you can check out my website at also diy.com and follow me on instagram yeah also DIY thanks and see you next time
