do these antlers make me look fat antlers antlers everywhere antlers near and far I came from a big hunting family that was all we took our vacations on when I was little I started hunting with my granddad when I was 12 hunting the big mule deer of the Pacific Northwest Rocky Mountain Roosevelt a elk I shot quite a few bear hunted a lot hunted every year three four weeks a year until well you know maybe fifteen years ago or six probably the last time that I went I just kind of lost a taste for it not a lot not ideologically against it at all I think it's a wonderful thing especially to teach your sons and daughters how to do but you know you grow up in something and you do it for that's all you've known and then when you could become older and start to kind of go your own way and find out what you like and dislike and some things you do take that came from your family some things you discarded that was one thing that I discard would I ever do it again I would if Jack shows an interest and he is starting to I will certainly take him hunting because it was a wonderful experience for me but this video is not about hunting this video is about antlers so I have a large pile of antlers that belong to a deer and elk bowls and bucks that I shot as well as several that my grandfather shot and that these are some that I received you know got from him when he passed away a few years back and one thing that I noticed I caught a porcupine out eating when I might the tips off of one of my granddad's antlers you know porcupines they'll eat antlers that's how that's why you they go away so quickly they just love them so I want to do something with these what I have this is a little mule deer good size moderate size that I shot granddad wrote in there in 1991 1991 a nice little one two three four points out west we only count one side but east eastern hunters are mid west they count all of them together so that would be eight point like if you're from Minnesota I'm sure but we only count one side five by four or four by four and that type of thing so but this is this is a little visa brow tine says don't don't really count but this is a just a nice little four-point that belongs to me this one here this is a I believe granddad shot this at the coast this have been an Eastern elk this is probably looks like a Roosevelt to me one two three four nice four-point respectable Bowl not not super big he had some really big ones but but pretty decent I think everyone would be pretty happy to have something like this so both of these this one here granddad's is in really good shape mine you can see something started eating on the tip a little bit but that's okay we can still do something with it so what do we do with this how do I take these two antlers and that can kind of serve as a memory one these belong to grandad these belonged to me we both shot them together how can we preserve this in a way that will be nice to have in the house you know not everyone is a big fan of full mounts and antlers in the house Mrs W certainly would fall in that category that would be nice that would be acceptable to all parties involved what I'm thinking is maybe a way to hang them on the wall maybe a chandelier so I have to say you know so I went online and I looked at a whole bunch of stuff that the different people had made and I didn't really see anything that I liked you know it's kind of a lot of the old traditional stuff and I'd like to do something that was something that was it really nice so this is my my Nana she was she was fancy both my grandma grandmas were fancy but she she was a seamstress used to make wedding dresses and she was quite talented but she always covered all the antlers in this in this fake velvet well with all the padding at Brite polyester so this this was it was all bad so and that's not really my thing sorry now but I think she would understand I'm gonna take that off there we don't we don't need that I certainly don't need that let's see what we got underneath here so would you look at that I was wrong about these look at this a granddad he made this bracket look at that made that bracket that's okie style right there boy braised on or welded on a couple of nuts and bolted through he this was this was older than I thought he listened he wrote on there look at that he shot that in 1957 1957 how cool is that how cool is that what can we do with this so let's take a look at that bracket here why do we do cut it off the skull can we make a lamp out of it look at that that's quite a nice bracket right there that's that's a good set of antlers the thing is is if I hang him outside they're gonna get ruined if I leave them outside then the blonde porcupine is gonna eat them they're already you know getting a little bit weathered I need to do something with them to preserve them and get them back in the house because I'm not really sure what I want to do exactly I'm really reluctant to split granddad's horns I'm gonna I'm gonna set those aside for a moment my own horns my own horns not so much here they're not not as special to me so what I'm gonna do is I don't want the plate I don't want the skull I want to cut them off the brow tines here cut these off and we'll we're gonna do something with them I've here let me show you something else that I that I'm thinking about it get you opinion on this here this is something I've hung on to and moved I don't know how many times I've moved this because they're so nice my mom got these somewhere I don't know if they were a garage sale or what they are or what they were she got them but they are a really beautiful solid bronze they're wall sconces I've got two of them and if you look here you can see these here are solid they're antique tier but they're solid brass these are really nice ii-if it has the artists are just signature in the back and so these would hang here like this see if we can see it there and that would be a wall sconce and of course there would be a you put you some sort of a glass you know shade on there but I've always admired them I just thought I thought that they were they're heavy or they weigh several pounds apiece here I always thought that they were so beautiful and I had in my mind some idea of how to incorporate this with it with the antlers we have a need of a light in our living room overhead but we have a low ceiling so we can't have a really big you know one of those really cool antler chandeliers but something incorporate how I'm not sure just not sure what to do but I I do know that whatever it'll be I want to cut these off here so you can think on that there for a minute what we might do with this and let's cut these off and polish them up and then kind of and then we can play with them a little bit and kind of see what was what we think you know what might be the most prudent thing to do is just let let's cut these off of here and then we'll see and then we can play with them a little bit and then maybe maybe we would do a part two maybe I'd like to see a wood might see from here in the comments what you guys think we should do so I'm going to use a little portable sawzall here and I'm gonna cut we're going to cut these off the skull boy those antlers they really those old bone gets really gets tough now let's put our soft jaws in the vise and we'll do a nice little will polish this up here so we'll put the soft jaws in there and let's put up let's put a nice a polish on here these boy these brow ties I can polish up really nice so this one kind of hold them in there so it doesn't we don't want to damage them there this is a fragile portion of the antler you know the difference between antler and a horn anyone let's see how smart you are put in the comments if you know the difference between an antler and a horn one of the prettiest portions of the antler is the inside of this these brows here I guess they call them where it goes into the skull this compulsion sup so nice so what I'm going to use is a little pneumatic angle grinder this is my top ten favorite tools right here it's one of them this is the V tool if you want to restore axes you want to restore metal and do it quickly and easily with a roll lock attachment this little attachment right here 3m makes the best ones these little little disks you get them all grit and what's really finishes a month nice is scotch brite it's got to bright all different variations but I got to put a course one on there 60 grit every stone and we can we can polish this up a little bit whoo that smells bad I'm wearing a respirator I don't know if something in the back of my mind I thought it remembered something about antler dust the chance of that pote that tripod sitting right on the air hose antler dust there's not good for you but I don't know where I got that if that's even true a little scotch brite pad to put a polish on it heated it up a little bit there it's all right that looks looks nice though it's really nice it's pretty all right let's do the other one here look at that beautiful brow higher that I guess hey granddad used to say if you can hang a ring on it you count it as a point no but I don't think we count bro ties his points it's man I used to know all that stuff I was really into hunting archery and rifle but I haven't done it for years so with that done so here's kind of what I'm thinking these are actually a very nice symmetrical set of antlers here I'm gonna try to get your opinion on it but this is kind of something that I was was thinking and so many of these things are so tacky to do it right is hard but it can be done right and this might just be the set that's it that's a beautiful set isn't it let me move the camera and show you what I what I'm kind of thinking so what if what if we if we lashed these together with leather you know and I what I've got is I've got some rawhide leather that I got from my grandfather that he blow box of things that he that he had tanned but if we did something lash those together and then here check it out so something see remember they're gonna they got a man on the ceiling but we have very low clearance because we have low ceilings in the cabin so or the log home but if and to tastefully do this and something like this house is a solid solid brass right this little ding there with a with a nice shape to it to get the cord on it I can make build the fixture and instead of putting you know maybe not put a globe on there but a but how about one of those light bulbs that have the exposed filament because this is not gonna be this is just for ambience and for mood because I don't like overhead light so something I could turn on that that kind of warms up the room but it's not something that I need to this doesn't have to be a super-bright light but what do you think of of something like that does that does that work up flat against the ceiling you can imagine it like that or would it be better that's option number one option number two you know same concept because see where I'm going right there like like this this can you picture that this is option number two and and that could hang down drill through the antlers and suspend it on a on a short like a rod or something I could build that I'm not worried about that what do you think of that an option number three would be just to go and you go really simple right just to go I mean one of these you know this kind of thing you want this brow tie here there's only got one the little one right there but is there a way to you know will hide of course hide the hide the wire I'm not sure how to do that yet but I'll figure it out hide the wire in the antler so that goes up in you know like a threaded rod coming down and something like really minimalistic right so it's just hanging its suspended there in a way I don't know something like this here with just a simple line in it that's option number three number three is there another option yeah this is this is getting kind of silly here well maybe not well I got two of these what about this option number four would be to maybe mount it that might not be bad mounted mounts it like this oh here how about what if we do this you're gonna have to well nope here let me let me pull the other one out so we don't have to use quite so much imagination okay so we we do the thing with granddad's leather right and we do the crisscross and then wrap it with the leather we could even you know yeah like this like that spread it out so does it stick down so low is this business just completely terrible a terrible idea those two hang on there and suspend two lights does that look is that bad or is that could that be could that be it could that be cool I don't know buddy that's option number four so pick your option which one do you think I'll do a survey on there and and I'm gonna have to think about this I just can't I need to think think on it overnight to be sure because I I want to I want to do it right the first time I look at that think yeah I'm not gonna bias you so why go to all the trouble all this I get well see my mind right now is thinking was as I put that that lamp up in the last video someone made the comment good great you know what a waste of time why to go all that trouble you could just go buy something that sits on the ground and and yeah you could you certainly could but I you know I guess I'd like to be surrounded by things that without going on too much did that that when I look at they give me pleasure that I enjoy I could give you a little bit of smile or that or the warm fuzzy feeling inside you know like I really like that or I admire that but this isn't so much that what this is to me is that I was really when I was real and when Mrs W I were doing a Bible study or doing her our worship time we were taught reading a story about the ancient Israelites and something that they did as to remember where they came from and what they did was was was that they when some great thing happened when God delivered them out of Egypt or or gave them victories over an enemy they would build these monuments or even things to remind them of bad deeds that people had had you know heaping up by he stacking up stones and piles and God commanded them to do that and the reason why is he said make these monuments so that it's a reminder to the generations that come of what I where they came from of what I've done for them and who they are what the culture is and and every time you see that you would see that and see oh that's that's you know Jacobs tomb or you'd see that say oh that's where God parted the red seas and bring those things those childhood hood stories and and that memory of who you are back to your recollection so that you don't lose your foundation don't lose your grounding where you came from and who you are something that maybe is happening to us today moving away from families moving away from from our childhood homes and the family just going in all directions and starting new independent lives and it's easy unless you make an effort to to lose where you came from what what who you are and what your heritage is and so to me I'm not a I'm not a huge fan of deer antler lights or having them in the house but but more important than that to me is is that is that that monument built up to a time in my life or special people in my life that when I look at them it makes me remember remember who it is that that is responsible for making you the person that you are to look at granddad's antlers or to look at something that belonged to my father to mean it needs to be to me a reminder make sure that your living up to those expectations make sure you're doing yourself and your family proud and and remember where you came from and don't lose sight of that it's not all about you it's not all about we're not the center of the universe here in our lives I know we can kind of get that way and think that nothing else is taking place outside of it but it's important to remember that the only reason why we are here at all is because of the sacrifices and the time spent by our loved ones so to me to do something like this is it far transcends I it's the aesthetics of it or but but I do want it to look nice but it's to me to look at that and remember I remember when I look at this this chandelier if I make it this way I'll remember in 1991 hunting with my grandfather remember shooting remember butchering with him I remember coming home and mounting the antlers on the hood and being so proud as a young man and and how much time that he spent with me raising me and teaching me all these things that were so vital to me today when I look at this chandelier all of those things come back to me and it will remind me for the rest of my life and hopefully I can pass that on her and that Jackyl it'll mean something to him as well because any store-bought lamp or something that I could put up there that may even look better than this it's not the same thing so that's why to me it's worth the time to put into thought and the time to put into it because it's something that reminds me where I came from and who I am good morning another beautiful Wednesday morning in the Homestead thought I'd take you for a little flight through the top of some of the our larger trees so we went out yesterday and we were gonna got a hold of stuff ready we're gonna pick our elderberries and we realize that they're just not quite ready yet another week or so and they'll be ready got to be careful with elderberries because if you picked them too quick or too early before they're ripe they can be toxic and we don't want that but the good news is mrs. W is going to be making her famous blackberry shrub today once the shrubs on a scrubber it's not a bush a shrub is a is a way to preserve seasonal fruits and kind of a syrup that you can add to to water to meet clays to to make a tasty zesty drink which we all like blackberry tasty zesty drinks so we'll be sure they can sharing that today as well as we had our neighbor that contacted us and said that they have a huge pear orchard and they invited us to come down and pick all we want tonight so we're gonna bring you along for that too it's always nice to get free local organic fruit it's um something that we always look forward to that's a nice thing about the seasons is is to have all these fresh fruits Mrs W brings in these beautiful bowls of fresh strawberries and blackberries and the peaches this year have just been just as good as I can ever don't forget to chime in on the on the survey click the little button there on the top right and choose which one you think would look best of the four ideas or maybe if a better idea in the comments tell me what should I do with those with how can we make that in a way that will look good am I on the right track or is there something that I'm missing that I hadn't even thought of so I'm looking forward to those creative comments I'll look at those and then we can make a decision together and make something that work that we're all proud of not all proud of I think that's gonna be that's gonna be kind of a cool fixture all right well I guess that's it we'll see you guys on the next video don't forget to comment we always we read all the comments in the new videos and if you haven't subscribed we invite you to do that and you'd like to see my favorite recommended tools and items you can go to my Amazon store at Wrangler Mart calm and in there I will put that little angle grinder if you want to restore a tool those are things are not very expensive but you'll find with that little thing if you have a compressor that you'll use it all the time it's just a wonderful little tool on worn-out three of them alright well thanks for watching we'll see you guys on the next video
