today we're going to make this outdoor cedar bench to pay with the cedar chair I made in the last episode I used cedar fence pickets and stretchers that I bought from my home improvement store this reduced the amount of milling that I needed to do but I still had some work to do so first I removed all the staples and then I used my planer to smooth out the sides [Music] then I try both sides of the pickets and two-by-fours so I'd have a nice square service to work with as you can see here at the bench is made of three lengths of two-by-fours and three lengths of pickets I use my table saw for all the cuts in this build but you can obviously use a mitre or circular saw instead I used my crosscut jig to measure and then set the stop block for the inner stretcher length then I cut all those down next I measured and cut down the two long stretchers it's helpful to really sneak up on this kind of cut to make sure that you get the exact length you want this is really easy to do on the table saw finally I cut down the vertical leg stretchers and I use the stop block again on my miter jig to speed things up I use pocket holes to connect everything together it doesn't really matter where you put them since these boards will mostly be covered up by the thin cedar fence pickets then I started assembling the carcass I used a whole lot of outdoor glue on all these joints since I'm not going to be finishing these and they'll probably be a lot of expansion and contraction with the rain and so forth I also use 2.5 inch outdoor rated pocket hole screws as I mentioned in the last video pocket holes are not perfect for everything but they're really great for this type of project as they are pretty strong and they're also really fast to work with it's often helpful to clamp a straightedge to help you keep everything lined up while you're driving this screw this way you only need to worry about pressing down on two directions with your hand instead of three here I'm marking out the spacing for the center stretchers I probably could have gotten away with just one stretcher but I always kind of like to over build a little bit I used some sawdust to wipe up some of the excess glue then I use my hand plane to flush the top pieces that were a little bit off and after since sanding the carcass was done this on the bench or mitered at the corners so it has a nice seamless look I've used the table saw to cut the 45 degree miter 's I set the stop block off the first leg board then I rough cut everything down they make them more manageable and finally I use the stop block to cut them to finish length I attached the boards with lots of outdoor rated glue and Brad nails I waited to cut the seat board though until I could measure it once the first board had been installed so here I am cutting the first miter then I'm going to take the board and check it against the actual workpiece and then I'll go back and cut the second miter just so it's perfect then I attach the top and the other side board and then I moved to the other side since it was going to be easier to do the space in the middle once I had the two side boards as references I was able to use a scrap packet as a spacer for the metal boards which was actually by design but I wasn't sure if I had been precise enough during my mailing to allow me to do this thankfully I was I used a bit of wood glue to fill up the miter joint cracks to keep water out then I decided that I wanted the legs to look a little bit stronger so I added boards to the inside as well for the middle boards I just used two scrap 2x4 piece to keep them supported against the outside I contemplated adding boards to the bottom as well but I actually liked how it looked without them so I finished it up by doing a little bit of light sanding and that was it like I said this was a really fast project and I'm pretty excited about how it turned out the materials only cost 60 bucks and the thing is super sturdy I'm gonna add some plastic feet to it to keep it out of the water but I didn't have any on hand at the time anyway let me know what you think in the comments if you want to see some behind the scenes shots check out my Instagram and as always consider giving me a thumbs up and subscribing thanks again for watching and I'll see you in the next episode
