darling and I tell you what's been on my mind sick and tired of the nine to five in the city like hey friends welcome back to my channel and get ready for this bathroom makeover we are totally making over the entire Hall bathroom in our house welcome to the starting point in this room we have carpeted floors we have a very old toilet a very yellow tub the walls are painted yellow just very original to the 1960s in this house they definitely painted it a couple times since then but it's still just nasty I don't even want to talk about carpets and bathrooms it's just something that shouldn't happen but this video is all about demoing not demoing no demo is really happening in this video but it's all about making this bathroom more functional if you've been following Along on our new homeowner Journey you know that this bathroom is gonna all be demoed in a year this eventually will be become part of our master bathroom and the grand scheme of things in our house but for the time being we definitely needed at least one functional bathroom in this house that felt clean and I felt comfortable bathing my daughter in and just somewhere that we could actually use and just not feel totally grossed out by and out of the three bathrooms in our house this is was the most promising one so we put all of our attention here to just make it clean and fresh and functional until we can build all of the fun exciting new bathrooms so we are starting off strong with removing all of this carpet thankfully it was just stacked right on top of the tile floor so discussing disgusting work by my husband removing all these carpets shout out to Christian you'll see a lot of him in this bathroom project anything that's just not painting and just like design work is basically Christian's territory he is awesome at this stuff and is always willing to tackle the gross jobs that I'm not willing to do so we took that out we also cut off the caulking on this shower spray guard we didn't realize why this was installed here and it's actually because this tub is sinking the floor in this bathroom is sinking and sagging pretty badly to the point that like it's tilting towards the rest of the bathroom so whenever you take a shower or have any water spilling in it all of the water runs off and floods the floor of this bathroom so this breaker is actually helping prevent that from happening so we definitely know that but it was still gross needed to go but you can see just all this cracked Caulking and stuff it's because the floor is Shifting we are getting that addressed as soon as possible it's not a huge structural issue right now like it's not unsafe for us to be in the house it's just not great for the house so that's why we have a lot of problems with uh gapping with the tile and the tub and all this kind of stuff but before we get too far into this project I also wanted to mention that all of these fixes are just kind of temporary things this is not like the long-term plan for the house we're definitely going to do more this whole bathroom will actually be demoed but we just needed one functional space so keep that in mind with all these projects I definitely did a lot of landlord specials of kind of just doing good enough in the bathroom like not making it perfect not doing like a fantastic super great job on everything because it wasn't super important and we want to preserve our time and our efforts to be spent elsewhere in the house but we really needed to make this space a lot better and obviously a lot cleaner so the first big project in here besides taking out all of the carpets is prepping this bathtub to get painted I bought a kit from Rust-Oleum that I'll show you in a little bit that's actually meant to paint tubs and tiles and it actually worked really really well but with how much Grime and dirt and is on this tub we had to do a lot of prep work including scrubbing it down with bleach powder we're gonna sand it we're gonna do a lot of prep work to make this adhere nicely to the project and so here we're just going to get down and dirty do all the scrubbing all the cleaning you can see how much this bathroom desperately desperately needed it especially with all the carpets hiding all the gunk together [Music] once the tub is clean and all the soap scum or any Grime is taken off you then want to go with a very high grit sandpaper so it's not super super rough I think they recommend like 200 ish as the grit or maybe it was 400 I don't know a really high grit sandpaper and then go over the entire project you're painting this will definitely help the epoxy stick to the project grip it hold it way better so follow the instructions on the actual uh paint they give you pretty detailed instructions of what to follow but a high grit sandpaper is the next step in the painting process fragrance goes to my head my darling next you want to wipe down any dust from the sanding so that the tub is super clean and dry again and then I'm going to tape off the edges of the tile here anything you don't want to get the epoxy paint on you want to tape off so the drain covers they recommend taking off the drain covers but like I said we're just kind of doing the landlord special on this job we just want it to look a little bit better I'm not super worried about it being absolutely perfect so tape was plenty good for my project the weird thing about this epoxy is that it comes in a two-part kit so you open your jar of the paint and then you add this solution to it mix it up and then you have a certain amount of time that this solution is like good for like you can't do infinite coats of paint of this you need to only work with it I think you can do like one coat of paint let it dry for an hour or two and then do the second coat of paint in all honesty our tub could have used a third coat of paint but it was not worth spending I think it was like forty dollars for this kit it was not worth spending 40 more dollars to just get one more layer of paint on it for us so keep that in mind that if this is like your permanent bathtub in your home you might want to Shell out for two kits if you need that extra coat of paint but one more thing I should definitely mention is that this has such a strong smell this room doesn't have a window and it has a really poor uh ventilation fan but I had that going and I was also wearing a respirator mask I had a box fan blowing air out of this room I have as many doors open like I wanted this room very very well ventilated because this is a very strong smelling epoxy you are working with and it is like headache inducing so be very careful take breaks be cautious while you use this and then the only other note that I have is I went in with a high density foam brush foam roller a lot of people online recommended going in with like a paintbrush also to get into all the nooks and crannies I didn't find that super necessary I found this little four inch ruler was just good enough to get into all of the curves we even ended up painting the sink in this room with it and it was enough like it had enough dexterity enough Flex that it was able to cover all of that but I did the first coat of paint I also went over and did all of the same prep work to the sink cleaned it sanded it wiped it down taped it off and then went in with the same foam roller it worked out fine I did notice that we had a few little specks of the foam roller coming off and sticking into the epoxy so some little spots have little ridges or bumps after the whole project was done so maybe you want to switch out your foam roller brush a little more frequently than we did but otherwise I'm really pleased with this product I'll have everything I used in this process down below and it really truly brought this bathroom back to life I can't imagine having used this bathroom for a couple weeks now with like the white tub and all that I can't imagine having to live without a yellow tub while not being able to really justify replacing it in this kind of bathroom so definitely definitely recommend this tub even if your tub is just like old and grimy this Fresh coat of paint can work really well [Music] overthinking feelings [Music] after letting the first coat dry for an hour or two I went in with the second coat of paint and was so pleased with how this turned out you don't have any top coat or anything to do with this it's just the epoxy mixture of the two parts to put together the only other thing you have to do with this paint is let it dry and not be wet for three whole days thankfully we were going to be out of the house while this process was happening so we didn't need to be using this tub or anything but that's one more thing to consider is that your bathtub will be out of commission for a few days but uh that was drying we came back and started working on the toilet Christian uninstalled it and we learned that all of our plumbing was bad in the house on this side so all the plumbing has to be replaced we also got scammed by the plumber who ended up coming out to install the toilet Christian was gonna do it because the plumbing was so so bad he just didn't feel comfortable I'll link a video here if you want to learn about the story of us getting scammed it went live a couple weeks ago but enough about that we got the new toilet installed and it was time to take off all of the paint three days had passed and the tub was looking beautiful it seriously brightened the space up so much it feels like a brand new bathroom it feels so much cleaner in here and we are so happy with this project we still need a though that'll happen later so around the edges will look a lot cleaner soon [Music] before next thing we wanted to tackle was painting the floors the tile wasn't awful in here but we still just felt dirty using this bathroom walking in here we wanted to feel comfortable walking around barefoot in our home I'm sure you understand the feeling and so we found a floor paint that's safe to use on floor tile they do not recommend using this inside of a shower tile I also should mention the tub and tile paint that we just used can be used on like wall tile like in shower tiles but they don't want it on the floors so I found another solution to paint our floors I'll link it down below also and this one you have to buy two separate quarts of paint you have the paint and then you have a top coat so a little bit different than the tub and tile system we used but a similar process you want to make sure your floors are really clean free of any Grime any dust vacuum really well all of that stuff I then went around and taped all the edges of our bathroom and then it's kind of just like a regular paint you don't have to mix anything there's no like epoxy like super strong smell it's just kind of like normal paint almost and so I went in with a paintbrush to go around all of the edges getting all the little nooks and crannies and then using the same kind of foam roller brush because I had bought a bunch of them for the bath project I just went around and used that to cover like the bulk of the surfaces this product is recommended to only use one coat of paint of the actual color and our color we went with was greige there's a bunch of color options with this you can get it tinted I think this is a Home Depot product so you can like pick what color you want I didn't want this whole room to be a stark white so the grayish color was a perfect fit but what I was saying is you only do one coat of this so I had a very heavy hand while I was painting this and I'm so pleased with the coverage that it offered [Music] that's how you know you've been in love [Music] [Music] I don't know where she came from it kind of turned me upside down now I only did one coat of the paint and then after six hours it's time to do the top coat this one you definitely do not have to be as careful with and as meticulous with so I just went ahead and started off with my foam roller brush I didn't bother going in with a paint brush and all the edges I just it's a clear coat you're not going to notice any little mistakes or anything so I just was pretty easy going with this one it took me only a few minutes to do all of this and then similar to the bathtub that's the hard part with these projects is that you can't walk on these floors I think it says give it like one full day for you to be able to like lightly walk around with like no lint on your socks and truly seven days to like really cure the paint thankfully we were also leaving the house for a couple of days at this point this is the last project I was working on before my daughter and I were leaving the house I think for at least a week so we didn't have to worry too much about this but we definitely made sure we were strategic when it came to the timing of uh when we did these projects foreign [Music] accomplished the clean feeling I wanted in this bathroom but I was a little worried I went a little too like stark white and just flat colors and lifeless in here like dynasty was starting to feel a bit like a prison bathroom a clean prison bathroom but like it's definitely not like colorful warm and inviting but honestly I was okay with that because I felt comfortable stepping on this floor with my bare feet I felt comfortable bathing my daughter in this tub so give and take we're gonna add back some color in this project later on I was not planning on painting the walls when we started this process and by the end of the video that's the last thing I'm doing in here is we're going to do a really fun fun color like you guys know I'm a big fan of whites and neutrals but I think I got a little bit bold with the paint color so stay tuned to the end to see that but now that we were all back in the house everybody was involved in the paint paint peeling the tape peeling process and then adding a few little Decor pieces to make it truly functional we just grabbed a generic bath mat that the end of the video no longer batches the bathroom because of the paint color we chose for here but I don't even care it's just a nice bath mat to have in there we're also going to switch out this old shower head for a new one we're gonna switch out the shower rod for a new one and then install install we're gonna hang up our shower curtain just to make it like the final steps of this becoming functional we're going to do more to make it look cuter and some more fun things to this space so stay tuned for the rest of the video but at this point we felt really comfortable with this being our primary bathroom and living in this home and everybody using this one bathroom no for this no more tricks we could take things slow [Music] say you think about it too when the lights go out and there's no doubt that I should be lit that I should be we've been on and off again and again I don't know which way we're going no control you push me then you pull me back in we've been on and off again and again I don't know which way we're going we finally caulked the bathroom tub this is Christian's first time ever using and he gave me explicit instructions to make it look like he knows what he's doing in this video because he was getting so so frustrated with his this bathroom has just been patched over poorly so many times so there's just like an abundance of really old and like it was not a smooth surface to work with and it was just a difficult like not an easy way to like learn to use so sorry Christian I hope I did you justice right there we're also just gonna try to fill as many gaps as we can like I said the floor still was like cracking and separating and we just do not want to create more problems or like not properly and have water damage problems that did not exist before I'm sure we're gonna find water damage when we open this bathroom up I'm not worried about that or thinking about that now but we wanted to prevent anything further from establishing so not the prettiest job of all of this extra but like if it's gonna help water proof in protect this bathroom from any further damage we are all for it [Music] all again and just the icing on the cake of this bathroom is that we started having a big leak it was not a fun process but Christian uh watched a bunch of YouTube videos went to Home Depot and we didn't pick out very pretty fixtures because like I said we're just trying to get this bathroom functional and uh thankfully replacing all of these uh knobs fixtures faucets whatever they're called replacing these three uh solve the leak and saved us a lot of money from having to call and get scammed by another plumber so not the cutest thing but it stopped a leak and it fixed it and now at this point we were so over this bathroom like I did not want to paint it because I did not want to spend any more time in it but I also hated every time I came in here like I should be grateful for this home that we get to like grow our family and all of this stuff but this bathroom it's just one problem after another the Plumbing's a huge thing that's going to have to all be torn out like it's just not fun to think about this bathroom and until we can build our new one start to finish I just needed something to make me like this room a little bit more so I'm trying out a darker paint color in here I had been seeing the color by Sherwin-Williams called Evergreen fog all over my Instagram page and so I was like maybe this is what this bathroom needs to make me hate it a little bit less so I went to Home Depot got a sample size of it and then decided to paint this wall oh one other thing we hated in this bathroom was the towel bar that you see in the clip right here hangs over the toilet area so that's also gross and so Christian wanted a spot to hang our towels that was not right there so my thinking was let's do the sample color of paint to see if it's too dark because I don't want to turn this bathroom into a dungeon after spending all that time painting the tubs and making them white and bright again but I also wanted to paint right here where I could install all of our towel Hooks and get rid of that towel hook hanging over the toilet so two birds one stone and I'm so glad that I went with this it went a little bit out of my comfort zone in the bathroom because I loved the green color it was a little intimidating and a little dark at first but there is so much white tile on the walls in this bag bathroom that we decided to just go for it so that's what we're doing next we're painting all of this stuff I'm gonna do some landlord special here with the towel bar it had metal anchors in the wall which I have actually never seen used before and when I tried to pry them out the walls were pretty spongy and very delicate and I did not want to open that up and discover mold I didn't I just did not want to deal with one more problem so I'm in a landlord special it and just spackle over metal anchors in this wall do not judge me too harshly we're we're so over this project we're so over this house in this room and it was just I'm doing the best I can okay for everything you're making me better [Music] and I wanna take you there [Music] make our love a story that would never end [Music] never thought I'd feel someone alive looking in your eyes [Music] everything not to just pour on the complaints about this bathroom but we have had one more issue crop up in here and that has to do with this doorway you can see that this door is a 30 inch door well maybe you can't tell that but it's a 30 inch door and you can definitely see that doesn't even have a full door frame the door trim is just like barely shoved in there barely fits everything is just cramped in this space that little piece of the tile that juts out is where our hall closet is which like we appreciate the storage but everything is just like so small and tight and jammed in this room and this door now doesn't open and shut properly I don't think it was from the paint I just think like over time there's humidity and swelling in the walls and the doors and it's just now the door doesn't open and close properly so that's just one more thing to tackle in this bathroom that has not been fun will be I'm not even tackling it we're just kind of uh saying you need to open you need to like knock on the door before you try to push it open because someone might just be in there with a door propped shut not fully shut so when I say that this bathroom has just been a from start to finish it just it really truly has and I really can't wait to look back in a couple of months maybe even a year from now and just kind of laugh about all of the annoyances we had with this bathroom because hopefully it will all just be history long gone in the past for us pretty soon another thing to mention is that this paint process took forever if you've been watching the living room or the dining room videos you know I've been painting so much in this house and this room by far has taken me the longest amount of time to paint just because I was working after Madeline went to sleep at night I would just do like one or two little sections of a wall every night do my two coats of paint pass out wait till I had the energy or the strength to do any more painting and then do that the next night there's just so many like awkward and like unique little Corners to get into in this room and the only way I was going to be able to manage this project was by breaking it down so we were living in like a semi-painted bathroom for I want to say it was like almost two weeks that it took me to paint this like definitely longer than a week of painting like one wall here a few nights off so that's the only way I tackled this room was by taking lots of breaks because it just was frustrating and tedious painting in this room and I did not really enjoy it that much but overall it was worth it another thing we ended up painting is this retro magazine holder attached to the toilet roll holder I would have loved to take this out of the wall but it went like farther back and then we would just have a gaping hole in the wall where this was so we opted to just paint it I just grabbed the Swiss coffee white paint we're using all over the house and trust me I know this does not look great but it looked better than it did before that made me happy it Blends into the wall tile just a smidge more than the yellow color used to and it's one less yellow thing in this bathroom [Music] I'm not the one to say never never [Music] [Music] one last functional update to the bathroom was adding a hand towel ring we didn't have one of these before and also this Hardware is not my favorite the brushed nickel is a not my go-to but we already had this on hand and it matched the other Hardware in the bathroom I'm so excited for the next bathroom we're gonna be a lot more creative a lot more aesthetic and a lot prettier with all of our Hardware choices in the future bathrooms so make sure you're subscribed to this channel for that content coming soon we have Plumbing quotes that we're ready to move on we have tile picked out like we are ready to build the next bathroom so that's coming that's coming soon we're getting there but here are the wonderful after shots of this bathroom all of the complaining aside I am still so happy with all the work we have put into here we spent way more time than I would have liked for a like bathroom that's not gonna exist in a couple of months but I'm really pleased with this room it makes me happy to come in here now well as happy as I can be with the floor sinking and all that stuff but we have a toilet that works we have a bathtub to be their child in it's clean it's fresh it's a little bit stylish even if the bath rug doesn't match the walls but also this Evergreen fog color is my new obsession I can't wait to use this everywhere I definitely am going to use it in one of the new bathrooms we build I might paint our front door this color I'm enamored with it so ultimately really happy with this project let me know down in the comments what was your favorite update we did in here and I will see you guys in the next one bye [Music]
