hey everyone i wanted to make a video today about some audition tips i auditioned for disney and eventually became a character performer so um i remember when i was thinking about auditioning i was looking for any information i could find watching all the videos so i'm sure some of this might be information you've heard before if you looked at other videos or have been looking for information online um but some of it maybe you haven't heard so i hope that this video is useful so let's get into it so my first tip is arrive early for your auditions so i am of the mindset that if you arrive on time then you're late so i get everywhere pretty early um for my first audition i was i wanna say it was like one of the first five people there um and we were waiting for a while but i was so relieved because um the people who are later like another audition i did i was like 127 or something like that the later you are the longer you end up waiting so um get there early and um be kind of prepared to wait around for a while um don't expect to be in and out this might be your um event for the day depending on how long you get to stay if they want you longer and want to have you trying costumes do any improv anything like that or you might just be in and out either way you're kind of going to be waiting for a while until you get into the audition room my next tip would be to make friends so um it sounds like such a simple thing but one of the great things is you are meeting people who you already have like a common interest of disney or performing um so you already have something you can talk about so i have met so many great people auditioning and i definitely recommend making friends chatting with people um and you'll learn a lot too like some of them might get further along than you did or maybe you will and you can help each other out for future auditions so definitely be friendly be social open up a little bit and chat with the people around you another tip would be to bring a snack and water comfortable shoes and maybe like deodorant or like touch-up makeup like don't bring a whole like bag of things with you um i don't know i mean i'm sure that's allowed but um you're not gonna have a ton of time but like you want to be feeling confident so if you're so nervous and you go back there and you're like oh i really wish i had more deodorant like you'll have that with you or if you're sweating and you wish you could like touch up your makeup it's just nice like extra stuff to have with you shoes that you um if you get further for farther further enough along far enough far enough along that you make it to like the improv acting um you're going to want to be in comfortable shoes issues that you can move around in but um like character performer shoes sneakers those are all fine you don't want to wear like flip-flop sandals things like that now this is a tip that might get me some criticism i've heard people say the opposite before but um for me so i remember when i was watching videos people would always say go with a fresh face like don't wear makeup because then your face might not be versatile and someone may want you for this character but you're dressed as this character whatever um while i do agree you shouldn't really like channel any characters specifically because um someone might see you as like elsa but you're aiming for alice and like those are different looks so um i will say i felt more comfortable going in with like a full face of makeup so um i kind of have like an idea of what characters i could be playing um i know i'm not going to be doing like a jasmine so um my i played up like my own features um and i felt most confident and most comfortable having makeup on and feeling ready to like go out in a costume versus the first time i went to an audition with no makeup at all and i was like yeah i wouldn't pick me they're like what um so however you're most comfortable and most confident that is how i would suggest showing up to the audition so um it's okay if you don't normally wear a lot of makeup or if you like to wear a full face there are different characters um and different character performers who wear different amounts of makeup some girls will go really minimal others wear like a ton of makeup um so however you feel most comfortable and confident and most like a cartoon character then go for that my next tip would be to wear clothes and shoes that are flattering and show your figure um that will give the um casting directors like more of an idea of you know your shapes um they have different costume sizes and they just i think want to just get a general idea of like your body shape and um like i said before with the shoes you want to be comfortable moving around um you don't know what you're going to be doing you can have to pretend to like give a dog a bubble bath and if you're in flip-flops like flopping all over the place then that's going to make it a lot more difficult than it already is which brings me to my next point um so for this tip i would say to practice improv and get comfortable with being really animated um so maybe something that could help is like that heads-up game where you like put it on your forehead and like flip and you kind of like have to act out i know they have disney versions i've played them like a million times um and get comfortable giving yourself like different scenarios and having to like act on them really quick because if you get to the improv portion of the auditions then you want to know how to um like transition really quickly and um how your character would act with certain parts so if they say um pretend you're wrapping a present or pretend you're ballroom dancing now pretend you're goofy ballroom dancing um you want to make those quick transitions and know exactly how to move and be ready to be animated because that is something you do in training and they want to see how animated you can be and how comfortable you are doing that now i'm guessing if you're here watching this video then you already probably know that you should be doing this but my next tip is to do your homework so know where the location of the auditions are know what you're supposed to bring um know what time you're supposed to be there like do your homework and then like i said practice the animation um have yourself do some like dancing steps practice reading scripts as different characters things like that my next tip is if you can work for a character company so this is something that helped me tremendously so i first auditioned for disney i want to say i think i was 18 um and i didn't make it that time and i worked for a character company after that and it taught me so much about being in character character integrity um how to apply makeup how to wear the costumes the right way how to wear the wigs all of those things so when i went to future auditions i knew that i wanted to do my makeup a certain way i knew that certain outfits were like more flattering for my figure than others and things like that that were really helpful to me so um working for a character company especially if it's a high quality character company you will learn so many things that will be useful to you as a character performer so get familiar working with kids get comfortable with that um comfortable with storytelling improv um thinking on your feet like you have to really think quick in a lot of different scenarios being animated like i said um yeah work work for a character company that will help build your confidence and your knowledge on all things character performing my last tip for now is to not take it so seriously um i would say go in with the intention of learning something that you can apply to the future so um i guess this tip is also just to kind of like trust the process so i first auditioned and i was so nervous because i was like i have to get this i really want it um and it puts so much pressure on me i remember when i was standing in front of the casting director and they had a smile i was like shaking because i was so nervous so don't put all that pressure on yourself um relax think of this as a stepping stone so i didn't get it that first audition but i learned what i wanted to bring to my next auditions so i am of the belief that if you want something bad enough you can make it happen i did and i believe me if i can do it so can any of you who want to so um have faith that it will happen and i like i said don't don't bank on it happening the first time that's i think that's pretty rare um i know girls who auditioned 12 or more times and they eventually got it and they worked as multiple characters for a while so it's not that um they don't want you or other people are better than you it's just like the timing has to be right so trust the process give yourself a break relax and just expect to learn something i guess the last thing i want to say um it's not really a tip it's kind of like more words of encouragement um i know it can be really really hard to face that rejection but disney needs character consistency and performer consistency so um if they have someone who's like 5'9 playing ariel and you're 5'4 then that's going to be hard when they do like a character switch out and they notice ariel has shrunken down several inches so it's not because anyone is better than you more talented than you better looking than you anything like that um so try not to be hard on yourself and like internalize that and just try to remember maybe it's just not the right time i didn't get to work for disney the first time i auditioned like i said it took many years after that of just trying different things and working at different companies and then the timing was right and that's when it happened so just trust the process have fun and i hope this video is helpful and if this is something you want to do then i am happy to answer any questions and chat with you about it and i wish you the best of luck thank you guys again for watching i hope to have more videos up soon and feel free to let me know what you would like to see me make videos of in the future all right thanks for watching you
