back to no contest we're here in hawaii surfers are starting to come into town the first swell the winner just arrived last night and it's pretty massive we just met up with jack robinson here at halle eva pretty sure he only called us because nobody else wanted to serve all right i'll be right behind you biggest you've boy i know i have a 6'5 okay that's fine i mean it's like coming from west asia so it's pretty similar from the start you still come back every year and kind of have to get used to it again [Music] oh [Music] uh [Music] straight into it two big swells back to back it looks like and the season getting off to a good start this is no contest 2021 welcome back to no contest stab and red bulls look behind the curtain at the radical culture color and characters on each of the stops on the wsl world championship tour parker take four more than simply line up etiquette and birthright priority localism is a sort of utilitarian authoritarianism that's almost entirely unique to surf culture while other international surf destinations might have their own localized barriers to entry there's nowhere that localism looms larger than hawaii yeah localism is alive and well for sure they call it kapu aloha each winner hawaiians welcome and host countless international visitors their hospitality comes with a few caveats in these waves of culture shifting and skull crushing consequence when a momentary lapse of judgment can mean life or death you better know the rules there's these this rules it's like you look for the scariest guy in the lineup say hello make conversation sit under them would be my advice and uh just hope they miss one this winter was unprecedented in every sense of the word shark attacks covet scares a holy digital triple crown and the women's first championship tour run at pipeline ross texted me like get ready like you guys might run a pipe all the girls were like let's do this i was like amidst it all we'll follow rookie jack robinson through his big league debut jack robinson an 8.5 wow he's on mode and get to know the north shore's next generation pipe stand out moana jones and her posse of patted down helmeted young hellraisers and they all wear helmets and they're like don't go after the 2020 world tours covet cancellation the world surf league announced in november that they'd have heat back in the water the first week of december for the maui pro presented by roxy at honolua bay the billabong pipe masters presented by hydroflask and the sunset open after a year spent in various degrees of lockdown you can imagine how psyched surfers were on semi-normalcy back in hawaii for the women maui is normally the year's grand finale with world titles on the line and re-qualification implications this year was the first that they could really enjoy their time before the event very nice to see steph again and carissa and all the girls and kind of see who utilized the time off [Music] we made it a whole year later i can't believe it actually kind of i've always had so much pressure coming into this event like the last few years so it's really nice to not feel that pressure here it's been you know a really fun week here ahead of time it's different but why so beautiful the waves are so good and i think it's a great spot to kick it off for sure [Music] it's funny because last time i was here we were fighting for the olympic spot in the world title and now it's like the first event so it's like a little different but the girls are psyched it's good to see everyone again and it's amazing it's like what i live for to compete so pretty stoked it's so exciting to be watching a contest again i think it's even more exciting to have everyone around again it feels so good it is like that first day of school you know you walk in and you're going am i dressed right do i sound okay my big words ready just making sure that everything's cool and safe and distance and everything was kind of like all right well everything's in place the swell came in time and it was such a relief once it got called on this morning so once it started then it was like ah it felt so good the return to normalcy i mean i wonder if we're supposed to show people like around the events and [Music] stuff almost a year to the day of the last event here the ladies were greeted on day one with a fresh pulse of swell blue skies and maui's signature offshore trades [Music] do [Music] foreign do [Music] [Laughter] [Music] it's just spooky seeing the lineup empty it's december 8th 2020 today was supposed to be day two of the maui pro presented by roxy right before the heat got started a local got attacked by a shark down at the boat ramps about 50 yards away from where st erickson was just sitting and obviously everybody's pretty yeah we shook the guy screaming and then they took the skis and thankfully the skis were there and it was a huge bite off the back of his thigh there's a by the bite mark in the board it was like at least [Music] nothing could go wrong in paradise the mood's completely just zombie and our condolences go out to the friends and family of the victim it's a tragic way for anyone to lose a loved one the girls are meeting with wsl today to talk about what to do about the last four heats of the event it sounds like they're actually going to move it to pipe which would be sort of a master stroke on the ws ellis park [Music] i'll be off for about a week and it doesn't look like there's going to be much swell for the next few days take someone on like a tour of out not surfing what would you do okay maui i've come to a conclusion has a lot better food than oahu better quality and a lot of more options if you're coming to lahaina you're probably coming to eat and there's a ton of good options the ahi bruschetta here is ridiculous i think because lahaina is such a tourist trap some people call it a tourist trap but there's a good reason for that there's a million places to get good food so the food in lahaina [Music] maui is kind of infamous for the more cowboy like paniolo is what we call them hawaiian cowboys like matt miola has deer on in his yard like i don't know you kind of just don't think you'd see that in hawaii if you keep driving around the corner from honolulu it's just beautiful you can just keep going and going going it's absolutely gorgeous after a quick stop in paella and a peek at jaws a hike up mount haleakala and a wild six-hour hairpin drive down the world famous and waterfall-laden road to hana we met up with mauioji tai van dijk who's hosted hundreds of surfers running the vulcan houses on the north shore the last 20 years on a whim tai started milling and carving wood from a tree that had fallen on the beach at pipeline and he'd be the first to tell you the hobby has quickly become the best kind of addiction to me i'm not really even sure what makes hawaiian hardwood so special but we cut some trees down and i felt like the wood was came from a real special place right on the beach at pipeline and we just started making stuff out of it right in the yard and it just turned into like a full-on hobby i'm like a dick to do it my name is ty van dijk i've been with volcom since 93 about 27 years and i run the houses over there any tree like this that gets cut down is sacred i mean other wood is just special from other places this is what i do when i'm not on the north shore this is my uh this is maui it's all trial and error the first time i did this i used a freaking chisel bro and hand me and dusty did it in the yard he'd like come out in between the sessions and like chisel with me for like an hour [ __ ] it's pretty loud my wife's gonna come out here swinging if my daughter wakes up yeah this has definitely inspired me to do all kinds of other stuff ryan birch actually was at the house and we transformed the the boardroom into a shaping room and it's been pretty cool riding a board riding something that you shaped yourself that's the melted wax boom back foot right on that [Music] i had this wide slab that was too thin to really do a table with and i just kind of cut a hole right in it i'm trying to find the right photo to put in it i don't know kind of started off with photography and like i made a couple frames and and i was like it's kind of fun it's a whole new world for me really this is from that same tree for like a serving platter and this is a bowl my dad made right here i made it so it kind of just sits right in there perfect this is just like a red i was experimenting with some resin colors you could use them for anything rolling tray it's just a weird addiction super cool something something right about it yeah i'm definitely gonna take one at least one of these back for the house and just so we can have a super mean bowl platter at the house like it's got a lot done in a short amount of time right there [ __ ] pounded that [ __ ] out bro it's a little [ __ ] ancient family recipe huh from the old country huh it's a little organic butter organic broth at least it's organic no panic it's organic 100 organic boy don't worry about the ingredients don't worry boy everyone makes grinds there's always been guys around here that make the meanest grinds ever should have preheated this already i have no idea you just mix all these together and it tastes good a little zest in there to help the zest yeah i think this just got to go in already yeah just gotta [ __ ] launch it oh yeah look at that cow tucker in for bed nice and tight you ever made whipped cream before yeah oh i made it yeah i never made it you can't over whip it because it'll get all curly oh really you get it till just wearing it bro if you go over you sometimes when you're doing so many other things you don't get time to cook but i like it [Music] and here we have our fresh ahi trio courtesy of ken's fish market ken's the man bro when he was he was in the garage he had his own garage down there [Music] for years one of the north shore's best kept local secrets ken's fish market has gone from a humble little garage fish stand to a beloved and mortar operation in just a few years ask any surfer about ken's ahikatsu or their fresh-caught sashimi they'll practically start salivating play it up yeah right this is the haikatsu which is one of my favorites with the sauce beautiful ahi looks really really fresh probably caught in the last 48 hours i'd say at least i'm gonna get made fun of for how i use chopsticks whatever marker take four i've never heard of anybody getting mad at you ever yeah i don't know i just try to uh yeah probably from where i'm from at least too like you can't just paddle around like a turkey you know you're also someone who at a really young age was being brought to waves that a lot of people feel really intimidated by wherever you go you know there's always a line the guys that are there from there they get their waves and it's i'm not gonna uh get in the way of it ty i feel like you've watched like so many people come from all over the world and spend time here each winner of the house and stuff do you feel like there's like a common thread to the way that they sort of behave here and sort of navigate in hawaii that helps them sort of endear themselves to the community when a kid comes to stay here for the first time i've always just told them be respectful of the locals be humble let your surfing do the talking and just like the waves will come to you if you're in the spot to get away just go and you see the other kids that aren't from here too those are the guys you can battle yeah there's been a couple a couple minor little kids who got rousted and stuff don't go for the wrong person's wave becomes more of a just making sure everything like runs right people's safety too yeah it's not about making sure the locals get their waves it's making sure that no one gets hurt because people aren't paying attention to the order you're gonna be looking out for people but making sure no one's doing anything silly either not getting burned but people paddling around making a bad like rhythm in the lineup if someone was to come off the street that never surfed and like never experienced anything like a localized lineup how would you describe to them what it feels like um i would describe a localized lineup as just uh definitely you know um uh localized i don't know i don't know this is kind of a hard one to answer localized lineup it's kind of like you felt you feel energy yeah you can feel yeah passion is that energy the hair on the back of your neck raises up a little bit when you know there's a kind of localized vibe you don't even have to say a word it's just you already know you just get a vibe and everyone will probably tell you though when you show up to a new lineup you know th there's these this rules it's like don't have any entitlement go alone paddle out with respect if you have to one other person don't pile out together let sets go by definitely never paddle out to the peak don't pile out to the peak ever just be patient less is more see who's getting a lot of waves and uh even say hi say hello make conversation i try like to break the ice silence is key go look for the scariest guy in the lineup and start trying to talk to him keep your mouth shut be quiet i mean if some ground paddle out that pipe and started talking to me i think that's cool i've been yelled at for hooting at someone whatever like he's talking guy's getting barreled at rocky planet it's better than being the quiet guy just pulls out what you distracted me go in i'm like okay i don't know i don't know what to do take the worst waves out there take a couple of the smaller waves take these scraps i would probably wait more like wherever like the kids are don't push it kind of make my way from the inside out stay invisible i want to cruise here with you guys for a little bit and figure out what this situation is i know where i sit don't be overly aggressive i know my place you should too if you like think that you can like escape the pecking order and i think if you learn the order of respect in hawaii it's not going to work out for you you'll be great traveling other places it's kind of cool that there's a spot that the locals still genuinely are holding it down it's like sacred to you and your friends and your family that's like you should hold it down i do think there's a certain element to having respect for the people who are from that area i think every where should have a local vibe which is a beautiful thing because waves aren't being wasted the ocean's for everyone and surfing's for everyone uh but everyone's in the right spot you get too busy you're getting too greedy someone probably will let you know and that's actually can help you out along the way sometimes i drop in on people at pipeline i'm sorry john john i'm sorry kelly it happened you could make that honest mistake and be a man and be like hey i'm sorry about that just apologize kill him with kindness you know what just don't go out get home give respect at dinner yeah give a little respect to us at five no i'm just kidding it's pretty basic it's pretty basic but nowadays localism i feel like it's enforced through social media and i feel like most people would probably rather get slapped than shamed on the internet you get more followers yeah or get slapped on camera and then it really goes viral and it really goes fine bruce irons talked about it once he was like well isn't a slap on the on the head better than having someone head first on the reef maybe a lot of the guys that were super violent are just older and more mellow now and all the guys now are lucky that's how it is localism used to play a bigger role in hawaii i mean less cameras nobody sees anything i've definitely seen a lot of violence i've definitely been a part of violence in the water it's weird how surfing and something so special can like make you so mad whatever you do is gonna be captured and put on the internet faster than you can get into the beach every guy that surf knows exactly what i'm talking about guaranteed anyhow so good i'm looking forward to uh cracking into this key lime pie oh yeah it's probably pretty close to ready i'm so scared right now boom has pipe always been sort of a part of your like childhood dream of being a pro surfer oh yeah there's all the spotlight on it yeah like this is the from the beginning this wave was the one and it's funny you just paddle out there every day like it's nothing but it's it's actually like it's everything [Music] you got your equipment dialed like it's one less thing to mess with your head but the hardest thing to do is pair the shaper and the surfer together like it's it takes a long time i've been learning a lot more with eric knew about his boards for like since andy you know since i started watching him so yeah it was pretty pretty surreal yeah rock is slightly different but i mean that's why i'd be giving andy right now yeah [Music] we here we go there's a lot of andy and jack you know i see it living here for 55 years on the north shore seeing dane kealoha and michael hull and then came kelly and that's what the bar was set for andy and bruce and and that school and then you got the jack school of kids watching that level his tube riding ability is like you could count the guys on one hand and he's one of them i like to get really close with the binos to see if anyone's even talking to each other or not talking to each other even people that know each other really really well there's not a word spoken there he goes there he goes jules don't want it and jack robinson does [Music] and he comes out of it see that's the brilliance of jack someone looked at it didn't want it and he had no problem with it at all leans in and then stands up when he's in it and then he gets back and maneuver it negotiate it get on the phone ball come out it's spitting closing out pinching on the sandbar and he does that little andy thing like oh this time to get out of town 7.5 i want to go bigger but these guys are tight jack robinson a 9-2-3 oh god all day and wilson you're down to second oh steep crazy drop behind the foam ball launches a little air falls off amazing go out jack robinson an 8.5 wow he's followed three two one jack robinson defeating julian wilson and he's number eight there's so many people that want to talk to his first heat first year this and that but i've been doing these heats for a long time like people want to see it as the ufc sometimes where you got full like battles of guys and like it's all sport all sport has certain uh you know conflict you know like when you're against another guy it's always that certain aura before you paddle out in the heat you feel the energy it's almost like you know where like worry is going against each other in the mind i don't care about anyone else's emotion or whatever they you know have with me but it's definitely something to be fired up for you know i need to don't back down for anyone i love danny's generation like i thought it was the best ever like things were wild you know what i mean like that was it was good the competition was insane like i feel like that's this is a era another era again another this is a generation that's coming together now people start saying i'm old soon though once you get to 25 people change quick this is a very forgetful game it is wednesday december 16th only two days left of viable swell in the waiting period and we are at the wsl testing site about five days ago they had a covid scare and the wsl decided to suspend the billabong pipe masters prioritizing the safety of the athletes and the staff and the surrounding hawaiian community here me and griff the other day we're like kind of feeling almost like kind of sick but i think we just surfed so much well the wcl worked to get the pipe masters back on the surf fire [Music] so [Music] did you get that sick barrel on that session or was it an earlier session what barrel the one you posted [Music] that gnarly pumping driving barrel on your instagram my wife runs my instagram [Music] test number 100 with international sporting events shuttered around the globe and operating with a reduced staff to minimize risk the wsl worked closely with the hawaiian government and health experts on one of the most robust coveted safety plans in professional sports throughout the maui pro presented by roxy and the billabong pipeline masters with over 50 surfers from more than half a dozen countries the wsl conducted over 1100 covid tests with a positivity rate of .05 percent or around five positives and a thousand tests and none reported in athletes how many times have you gotten tested for covid in the last month at least like 12. definitely north of 10 times or something i said five you said five yeah there's no way prior to this i didn't do any coveted tests but since i've been here i think i've done seven maybe since i've started probably 50. nostrils are getting worn out i think i have like a good record of doing the most covetous variety of text anywheres between like pretty much a large q-tip that has to be inserted a lot further like my brain's like permanently like fried in my head bag the ones in europe dude those things are like they go to your brain one's been 10 seconds another's been 15 seconds to try and get some stuff out of your brain and then take a little bit of your brain out like some cells or something stuck it up too far didn't stick it out far enough so i've done everything at this point i'm like weighing things out like is it worth it for me to go grocery shopping like is the event worth that me potentially not being able to do the event not really so i got my food uh i picked it up curbside groceries done it twice it's actually pretty nice you don't have to go into foodland stuff i'm not full hermit but kind of half permit so it's not that bad but then it does get lonely you're like uh where's everyone it seems like wsl is doing all they can they're testing us a bunch it's kind of cool knowing you're negative too so whatever i think we're all doing our part by trying to keep everyone safe over here so hopefully i can run this event after the wsl's groundbreaking shift to equal pay between men and women on the world championship tour pressure mounted to provide them with equal platforms and for the women to surf the very same locations as the men with the women confirmed to run at pipe it meant they'd be taking that main stage a lot sooner than they'd expected this is the best bench in the world ross texted me like get ready like you guys might run a pipe all the girls were like let's do this i was like while the men have spent decades dreaming about and preparing for the pipe masters after their exclusion from the event the women were given a few days notice that they'd be taking main stage at the masters many of the girls had to scramble to find boards borrowing pipe guns from male counterparts as close to their size as they could find what are you riding with i just grabbed this board from parker yesterday first time it's a little thick pipeline is definitely another beast this week was probably the most time i've ever spent out in my life combined that hype extra motivation to get myself out there because i don't really spend a lot of time out there practicing and surfing out there every guy comes up and it's like you're gonna start pipe like that's so sick like i'm gonna come down and watch you know it's a very intimidating lineup on the daily grown-ass man like stoked so much a girl at pike am i right believing that your mom likes body certain doctors when she was pregnant with you yeah yeah yeah that's my mom i'm sure she's thinking like oh i spent time there it's like my little juju zone so i'm sure she's like giving me her juju with no time left in the waiting period to hold out for bluebird pipe and backdoor conditions the women were left to deal with a very raw tricky finals day at pipeline they did so commendably under the circumstances leaving the door wide open for the women's permanent inclusion to the pipe [Music] masters it's a real equalizer out there right now because yeah as i said it's like it's the first it's first for the girls to be out there right now yeah who knows what can happen next um i'm really excited for the future of women's surfing first time ever a ct run at pipeline your champion for the maui pro presented by roxy tyler wright [Applause] [Music] so [Music] it just feels like every time i like lift i feel like somebody's sticking a knife right in the back of my foot so i'm just like dragging the thing i'm gonna go line to my friends for a couple hours [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] john at back door armbar's the start still traveling in how did he do that he's a magician [Applause] [Music] winning the fight masters is you know it's been a dream of mine it's a little kid i've grown up watching these events and i've made a couple finals and it just never quite got it and then so yeah to win out here i'm super stoked right here you want me to say john you want it yeah hey john your mom's right here do you want me to tell you a guy that's been destined to win this event his entire life john john florence it's hard to overstate how much work went in behind the scenes at the wsl to crown two champs at pipe hats off to them for pulling it off and congratulations to jon florence and tyler wright that's it for episode one of no contest hawaii the season was so big that we had to split it into two episodes on the next episode moana jones the next pipe star and a crew of thoroughly padded down helmeted hellraisers we'll also follow john florence and carissa moore through the first
