when you think of big sur you probably think of the beautiful rugged coastline but there's so much more to big sur than that today i'm gonna take you off the beaten track to discover two hidden adventures in the mountains first we're gonna traverse an off-road trail called the old coast road then we'll camp on a back country bluff high above the fog called pruitt ridge so stick around [Music] welcome back to get lost with brooks where we discover and connect with beautiful places today's gonna be a fun one so be sure to buckle in and smash that subscribe button for safety of course and because this is the first part in a three-part series on the hidden sides of big sur and i don't want you to miss out on the rest of the series all right it's time to start the adventure i'll explain the rest on the way let's go our first stop is gonna be a different take on the classic highway one drive and it's kind of like a step back in time boom this is matthias we're headed to the old coast road a dusty unimproved road that snakes 10 miles through the big sur mountains it used to be the only way around bixby canyon we're in big sur check this out look at this place look where we are right now until they built the bixby bridge it just secured to me yeah yeah it sounds like a weapon okay so that's no that's good that's what the audience wants to know about we're gonna drive onto the old coast road which is m.c bixby in the house [Music] that's the video and we're done what no no we are just getting started this is it the turn off to the old coast road pretty much right away things start to get a little more wild yeah man [Music] this is great man honestly if people just knew that they could do this i i feel like it's so adventurous and it's right next to the main drag the whole thing about big sur is there's only one road right highway one but this gives you another option another opportunity an angle to see it from a different angle as we get deeper off road the environment starts to change dude we're getting into a redwood forest back here this is awesome look at this oh yeah wow people live back here man getting sick but people aren't the only ones living back here of course it's cows and it just so happens to be rush hour i'm sure we can just slip right through here nope wait a minute if you could just a little to the left maybe what do we do matias is going to try to sneak around and uh herd them if you will almost almost there we go [Music] what a legend how does it feel that's how it's done [Music] well that turned out to be a fun adventure but it's not the only one hiding in these mountains above the fog and past the crowds there's a back country campsite called pruitt ridge it's five miles off road 3 200 feet above the coast and just freaking beautiful [Music] to get there we'll head up nasmiento ferguson road now going past this point is not for everyone the road is steep and there are no services that's right no water no bathrooms but come on man if you're self-sufficient the reward is sweet [Music] all right we are coming up on the turn off here we're leaving pavement here we are but the conditions aren't actually that bad [Music] you know as you can see even a subaru with no lift can handle this i'm kind of whipping through this thing to get to the campsite before dark um but if you take it a little slower you can really enjoy some of these sweeping beautiful views of the coast this is what i'm talking about dude getting out there we're here man we're here and it's looking really good this is it this is what it's all about oh my god this is man we're gonna cut that right we are just in time for the greatest show on the west coast that's why we do it man this is what it's all about [Music] ah peace beauty tranquility it's what makes this place so special and it comes at a cost no not money it's totally free to camp here the price is our carriage one of the challenges we face up here on pre-whit bridge is uh actually human waste and garbage i called the ranger station um just to see what the situation was up here and they said you know just make sure you're packing out or burying your human waste packing out your toilet paper and of course taking out your garbage here we've even got matthias who just went to the bathroom and he's packing out his waist fan fantastic we're walking around we're picking up every piece of moop every matter out of place that's human addition to this environment so we can leave it better than how we found it so the next people that come up here can have a pristine and great time thanks for joining me on another adventure be sure to check out part two and three when they come out and hey got any questions just like the video drop me a line down in the comments and i'd love to chat with you see you next time you
