Description we're going to look at three main things what sort of background an education that you need to get into digital marketing what key skills that you'll need to have and what the most common job duties and tasks that a digital marketing analyst will do first let's look at education digital marketing analysts often have a slightly different background from many other types of analysts it's quite common for them to have a bachelor's degree in marketing or journalism as a background you will sometimes see people with a more statistics or data science background in digital marketing though because some of the roles are going to be more technically heavy more technically analytical where these types of education and background would be really helpful to have because of the massive increases in the amount of available data that we generate as well as the momentous shift that we've seen in the past decade to more online forms of journalism media and marketing digital analysts jobs are growing at a rapid rate you'll find that digital marketing analysts roles are projected to increase by 20% between 2018 and 2020 8 this is according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the US and this 20% growth compares to a roughly 5 percent growth across the board in every position so it's almost a four-fold increase in the rate of growth in this role compared to the general increase in employment the key skills necessary for digital marketing analysts are quite similar to those of other data analysts first and foremost they need to have analytical ability digital marketing analysts work with large volumes of data they need to be able to crunch the numbers gain insight and then share that back to the organization or in some cases develop an update and marketing plan on their own analytical skills help people in this role to understand the data they're working with and prescribe what to do in the future to have better results communication is of course also an important skill for digital marketing analysts you'll find a mix of employment for this role between in-house positions as well as working at agencies that specialize more in marketing or even in SEO in these cases these analysts will be either consulting with people internally within the organization or they'll be working with clients where it's important to be able to communicate clearly your ideas what happened and how to make that data meaningful for the people that you're communicating it to since they're in the marketing space knowing marketing tools especially online tools like Google Analytics and Google AdWords as well as a variety of others and in some cases specialties to different organizations are going to be an important key skill that are necessary to break into this industry again the focus here is mainly on tools in the online space since we're talking about a digital marketing analyst for a more general marketing analyst position there may be more integration of applications of tools of systems that are used in a more offline setting or physical locations compared to a digital marketing analyst that's almost exclusively concerned with what's happening with web traffic social media skills are certainly an asset is not a requirement depending on the size of the company a digital marketing analyst may both be responsible for analyzing what's happening as well as developing new strategies and recommending modifications that can lead to more effective marketing campaigns in the future or more effective brand awareness in the general presence for these reasons digital marketing analysts should be social media savvy I know which different platforms are more likely to work well for their client a client or company that will do a lot of business on Instagram may not be the same company or client that's going to benefit from a substantial LinkedIn presence or Facebook versus YouTube there are many different platforms that may be in use I mentioned the digital marketing analysts may be employed in-house or they may find themselves working at an agency that consults with different clients in either case the work that they're going to be doing is going to be substantially the same there may be a few differences but no more than the differences that you're likely to find moving from one company to another digital marketing analysts will need to use the different tools available to them to develop recommendations of what's working and what's not working they're relied on to communicate effectiveness and recommend when something needs to change no matter the specific strategy whether it's trying to do as much marketing for free or low-cost as possible or having large paid campaigns there's going to be a cost of doing those at least internally even if you utilize Instagram and don't pay influencers but do it all yourself it's still going to take time and significant time investment to be able to pull that off off successfully on the other hand if the budgets are maybe TV campaigns or ad campaigns on YouTube or other platforms these still take some time but they mean maybe more money intensive upfront as well a digital marketing analyst needs to understand which of these strategies is going to be more effective and how to combine them to perhaps get the best result overall whether in-house are working for an agency a digital marketing analyst needs to cultivate relationships with their client whether that's the internal client or an external client understanding the business intimately will help them be better at their jobs it will help them understand where there may be niches of people that they could better target with their product letting them decide which platforms and which methods marketing on each platform are likely to be most effective they'll often generate reports on the results both some standardized reports as well as deep dives into what's going on and recommending the changes that then need community to either of these types of clients that they might encounter digital marketing analysts also are often responsible for a set amount of budget for different marketing especially in the areas of pay-per-click marketing they may be daily or even more frequently monitoring the budget and deciding how to allocate tweak and modify things to make sure that they're getting the most effective cost-effective results that are yielding to the most people converting in whatever way is desired whether that's having them become aware of the brand or having them purchase a physical product or potentially making them aware to be future buyers these budgets can be quite large and regardless of the size at a pay-per-click level they could exhaust it almost immediately or they could stretch it over a long time so managing the different budgets for online marketing is going to be a key aspect of a digital marketing analyst job that covers the education
