all right what's going on today youtube welcome back to your favorite cyclists youtube channel and this week's bike quick talks so what are we talking about this week well as you can tell got a couple things going on here got a couple different handlebar sets the road bike a shifter hanging here that's why we're going to talk about different types of shifters and what each one does and what each one and how each one functions but before we get into today's video if you are new to my channel please head down below hit that subscribe button if it is red that means you're not subscribed so you're missing all my content if you already are subscribed make sure you head down hit that little bell icon next to that subscribe button that way you get notified every time i upload so you don't miss anything great here talking about shifters here so what's the difference here what's the difference between shifters well i'm going to talk about three main types today so those are gonna be the three ones you will find most often on a bicycle first one we're gonna talk about is gonna be the ones up here these are actually from project mongoose these are gonna be your standard grip shifter probably your most common shifter if you're looking like a department store bike so walmart target you're going to find pretty much these shifters on there so what is a twist shifter well as you can probably guess they pretty much twist is what they do so as you can hear it's pretty loud i'll try and get it on the mic here so as you can hear those little clicks those the same thing with this side too those are essentially different gears or different positions that can be placed in so as you as you shift between your rear cassette or your rear freewheel as you turn that that is shifting between each of the gears as you turn the front one here this one actually the nice thing is you're able to actually fine-tune a little bit and get it so it clears your derailleur all the time but realistically same deal makes it so you can go in in this case all three of the front gears so what's better what's so good about these well they're on the handlebar they're really cheap easy simple nothing really can go wrong on them just because it's all enclosed right here on the inside of your handlebars they're essentially all going to work the same they're all either going to have one or two levers here they pretty much allow you to push a lever but push one this one's really quiet actually see you can kind of hear it so as you push that lever there that essentially is making the gear change for you so pushing the lever pulls the cable a certain amount allows you to shift gears nice and simple design so what's good about this one well it's even smaller and more compact than the twist shifters let's get a little better bigger grip on the handlebars as well generally with the twist shifters it's kind of a smaller grip versus these you can run a full size normal mount by grip on them which makes it nice other thing about these they do get it does get them out of the way you're not staring at them they're underneath the handlebars or over the handlebars under handlebars are much more common they're going to be underneath the handlebar you won't see them it's highly unlikely they're going to get damaged at all if anything is damaged it could be this lever but they're metal so highly doubt it they have a display on them that shows you what gear you're in so it's nice and simple there these are going to be the second most common you will see these on some of the higher end department store bikes and then pretty much anything you find in a bike shop should come with this unless it's their like basic of the basic bikes so this is this is gonna be the second one i'm gonna talk about here is gonna be your trigger style shifter all right so we're down to the road bike here these are the last ones i'm gonna talk about today those last most common ones you'll see seeds are gonna be you're pretty much like kind of a brifter for which to break and shift her lever combined together so essentially they're gonna be right here on the right here on the handlebars this is your break and if you actually move it to the side like this it'll click i don't know if you can hear that i'll do it one more time closer to the mic let's see if you click it that is shifting the gears for you if you're on a road bike you really don't want a grip shifter or a trigger shifter up here on the bars why is that well if you're riding a road bike they're going pretty quick they're also tend to be a little bit narrower over handlebars and most of the time when you're riding you're actually riding right up here on the on the hoods of the brake levers so you actually your hand is going to be here majority of the time occasionally he'll be up here majority of time you're already going to be down here so therefore it's in the brake lever nice and easy as you go up the hill or you're riding just to quickly flip to the side in this case a little lever here that shifts down most of the time they they have one big lever and one lever behind to shift it from gear to gear pretty simple design works really well for a road bike or a cross bike you know in a situation where you're going to be down on the drops or on the hoods pretty much all the time all right so that's going to be the three main types of shifters that you're running into when you're looking at bikes there are a couple others but they're much much less common so those are gonna be a three you're gonna find the most from your grip shifter to your trigger shifter to your road bike drifter style shifter those are gonna be the three most common ones you'll see while riding a bike if you have any questions or comments please let me know down in the comment section below i'd be glad to answer any questions you have if you did like this video be sure to head down below give it a big
