If the Captain lied, why would the F/O and Engineer cover for him? If I was in that position and the Captain was experimenting with the plane to the point of risking passengers lives, I wouldn't lie to cover for him. I find it far more likely that when Boeing was asked to evaluate their own plane and determine if they were responsible, they did exactly what one might expect: protect their bottom line.
