the history of warfare is littered with bizarre experiments always looking for new and innovative ways to destroy ourselves super weapons like the giant siege towers of the Greeks and the flaming rocket-propelled arrows of the Chinese the smallpox blankets and yeah even atomic bombs world war ii especially it was a caldron of crazy far-out ideas the Germans were building rockets and circular tanks the Japanese were just flying their planes into battleships and the British were actually gonna make an aircraft carrier out of an iceberg being in the middle of the bloodiest war in history can kind of make you think outside the box by the time the United States entered the war in 1942 German u-boats were sinking hundreds of ships a month thousands of seamen and sailors were plunging to their deaths they were looking for any kind of way to avoid this kind of detection this it's believed is what the Philadelphia Experiment was all about they were trying to find a way for ships to be able to sort of jump across space to get out of trouble and if that sounds like teleporting yeah that's that that's exactly what it was and according to believers of the story they were a success a nightmarish success the date was October 28 1943 the place was the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and the ship was a USS eldridge which is docked there with a small skeleton crew on board nearby in the shipyard was a cargo ship the SS Andrew Farriss a--the where many of the witnesses of this event were standing late in the afternoon between 505 and 520 p.m. the Eldridge began to glow witnesses described it as blueish green or just green it was also notice that the Eldridge became invisible to radar and for about a minute there it began to dim it was becoming sort of translucent at this point one of the sailors on the Andrew first that couldn't help himself and he reached out to touch the Eldridge and when he did he got hit with a massive electric shock that threw him backwards and then in a flash of light the Eldridge vanishes one of the crew members on the Eldridge opens his eyes and looks back at the dock but everything was different in fact it wasn't the Philadelphia dock at all he recognized it as the Naval Shipyard in Norfolk Virginia which he'd been stationed before the Eldridge has instantaneously traveled a distance of over 200 miles for the next several minutes that Eldridge remains there in Norfolk Virginia and then it disappears in reappear seconds later back in Philadelphia completely unharmed this alone would make the story of the Philadelphia Experiment one of the weirdest stories in military history but it's what happened to the crew where things get really weird first of all two crew members just vanished just got lost in the jump they were never seen again other crew members were reportedly fused into the metal and those who make it off the boat don't fare much better some of them have gone insane just immediately others in the next coming days and weeks go into what they call a standing coma they just kind of like freeze in place for minutes at a time they called it getting caught in the flow or stuck in the green some reports say that survivors spontaneously burst into flames some of them just vanish without a trace one reportedly walked through a wall right in front of his family and other crew members and never was seen again these weird phenomena continued long after the experiment in fact part of the mythology around the Philadelphia Experiment is a newspaper article that claimed in 1944 that a couple of sailors were involved in a barroom brawl and right in the middle of this brawl they just sort of dissolved into thin air this was apparently witnessed by several people in the bar including a couple of hostesses who did an interview for this newspaper but it should be said that nobody has ever been able to find exactly what newspaper this came from it's just sort of a clipping that's out there what is remarkable about the newspaper clipping however is that it's it's the only real piece of evidence that corroborates any of these rumors and stories about what happened to the Eldridge and its crew which believers in the story would say it's a secret military project so duh but this is where the story remained for over ten years just sort of relegated the rumor and conjecture until 1955 late in that year the Office of Naval Research of the onr received a package in the mail it was a manila envelope and written across the front of it said happy Easter and inside the envelope is a book by UFO researcher MK Jessup titled the case for the unidentified flying object and in the margins of the book are these weird bizarre handwritten notes that seem to be like one side of a conversation about aliens and Einstein and it briefly mentions the Eldridge the onr reached out to Jessup who said that he didn't send the book or write those notes but he thinks that he might know who did because he'd been receiving letters somebody whose handwriting matched that of the notes in the book now it needs to be noted really quick that Jessup was no slouch he had an interest in UFOs but he had a master's in astronomy and he stopped just short of his PhD in fact many of his friends and colleagues called him doctor out of respect and while working at the University of Michigan he helped operate the Lamont Hussey Observatory in South Africa which at the time was the largest refracting telescope in the southern hemisphere and he and his team actually discovered thousands of double stars anyway he was brought in to talk to the onr and he provided with them the letters that he had been receiving from this guy the letters drop a lot of the alien stuff and focuses a lot more on Einstein's theories but really doubled down on the Eldred story the author of the letters was clearly just desperate for somebody to listen to him any thought that maybe Jessup was open-minded enough to do so and this is probably because it's the exact same guy that I mentioned earlier who reached out and touched the elders and got hit with that electric shock it was a man who went by the name of Carlos Miguel IND Carlos claimed that Albert Einstein himself witnessed the Philadelphia Experiment from another ship on the dot called the USS emic and he saw Carlos get shocked the way he did and he brought him on board for a little bit of a debrief and that started something of a friendship between the two and he claimed that over the following weeks he became a student of Einstein and Einstein taught him all about invisibility and starship propulsion and Einstein shared with him a theory that would allow travel at four and a half times the speed of light and what happened to the Eldridge was the result of sending it down a faster-than-light tunnel crazy accusations definitely fascinating fascinating enough that one of the officers in the case captain Sidney sure be actually republished Jessup's book with those liner notes in there it was a small print run but it was enough to kick off a whole slew of philadelphia experiment conspiracy theories that continued to this day and all this really came from the testimony of Carlos a yen Dave he's sort of the axis around which the whole Philadelphia Experiment revolves but there's a lot of problems with a story like a lot of problems for starters ship logs show that the Eldridge wasn't in Philadelphia in October of 1943 and neither was the the USS Andrew vs. in fact at no time were the two ships at the same dock at the same time and neither was Einstein in Philadelphia at the time that Carlos claimed he was many of the witnesses that claimed to have been on the Eldridge were later discredited as attention seekers and in fact many of them weren't even in the Navy so there's no way they would have been on the ship at all and then there's Carlos IND himself like how credible is this guy well for one thing Carlos again des is not his real name so we can just start there his real name is Karl Meredith Allen and he served in the Merchant Marines from 1943 to 1950 to his resume was unremarkable to say the least and after he contacted Jessup he actually kind of disappeared for a while they couldn't find him nobody knew his whereabouts it was easier to hide from the government back then he began to reappear in the 1960s when that republish book with his notes and letters and it started kind of making the rounds amongst paranormal groups in fact at one point there were several different Carlos a.m. days running around claiming to be the real guy and throughout the 60s and 70s he made several appearances at conferences and whatnot reiterating his story and his story seemed to change over time at one point he claimed that while he was working with Einsteins group he met this scientist named Charles Proteus Steinmetz who famously had a hunchback in a case of dwarfism he also had a minor case of death he died before Karl was even born so Karl was kind of crazy but he wasn't interesting crazy in fact one University professor that sought him out said that he did so specifically because it was merely curiosity over encountering a genuine crackpot people say that about me someday so is there any truth at all to these stories the Philadelphia Experiment is mostly considered a hoax these days even professional paranormal researchers just consider it misinformation but there are still some hardcore believers out there that completely believe that something was going on some kind of secret military thing was going on at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in October 1943 and the thing is they're kind of right yeah thanks to declassified documents we now know that Philadelphia in the 1940s played home to some secret military experiments including a fatal accident where some people died and these tests were part of the Manhattan Project as a refresher the Manhattan Project was a secret project designed to create the atomic bomb the spine its codename the Manhattan Project actually took place mostly in Tennessee and Iko but there were facilities all around the country that were refining uranium specifically to power nuclear-powered subs and one of those facilities was located at you guessed it the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard construction started in 1943 and the plant went live one year later and on September 2nd of that year yeah there was an accident some workers were asked to clear a pipe that was filled with steam and uranium hexafluoride and yeah things didn't didn't go well an explosion ruptured the pipes showering the men with hydrochloric acid two of them died on the scene one in about 15 minutes the other one took about an hour to pass away a third man was badly burned but he did survive in total 14 different people were injured in this explosion did Carl Allen hear about this accident and get it mixed up in his head with other secret military projects that he was hearing about it is possible they were also testing equipment that was supposed to help make ships invisible to magnetic minds at the time in fact a magician named Joseph Danar came in and sort of consulted the Navy on the principles of illusion to help make the ships more invisible to the enemy our brains can do things like that it needs to make sense of the world and sometimes it can pull disparate bits of information that really have nothing to do with each other and smush them all together into something that never actually happened you know there was a bit of a perfect storm around the Philadelphia Experiment actual secret government programs an accident where people were killed and injured a weird newspaper clipping and a very passionate but delusional man all kind of came together to create a rumor mill of conspiracy theories that continues to this day and the somewhat questionable death of the author NK Jessup only added fuel to the fire Carl Allen needed help not an audience and back in the day his only course of action to get his word out was to go desperately to an author to try to get him to get it out there for him today he would just go on the internet the Internet is filled to the brim with Carl Allen's all completely convinced that their particular delusion is true in many cases this can be unfortunate even dangerous in the case of the Philadelphia
