Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
I think what D2R enjoyers keep failing to articulate is that they don't think that Pindle/Baal/LK/Trav etc runs are better than D4 dungeons, or that they're not mind-numbingly repetitive, they just do not want D4 dungeons to also be that repetitive. They want an improvement. They made terror zones in D2R for a reason.
If you're going to boast that you made 150 dungeons, I want the vast majority of them to be memorable and have unique elements. Give every one of them a unique final encounter. Put some monsters in them that are only found in specific dungeons. Scramble the final encounters around for nightmare dungeons.
There's a reason I can recall from memory all these different dungeons from Diablo 2. When you say maggot lair or den of evil, or ruined temple I can immediately picture them and tell you Coldworm is in maggot lair, Battlemaid Sarina in ruined temple and corpsefire is in the den.
I don't think some people realize it's less "all he wants to do is play D2/play a reskin of D2" and more "he wants a reason to play a new Diablo game." He brings up valid points, lots of them in fact, and has good insights especially considering how one of Blizzard's key talking points going into D4 was trying to make it more in line with D1/D2.
As someone that loves D1/D2, I could play those two any day of the week but at the same time I've played them for well over 20 years now. I'd love for a Diablo game to grab me like those two did again while at the same time providing something fresh as to not feel derivative but also recognize and understand the things that made those games special and stand out.
Iād rather hear the bad and decide for myself whether to buy than hear all hype
I think this video perfectly illustrates how annoying and lopsided the discussion around this game is.
So the dungeons are a problem and I think everybody can agree to this. There are objectives with backtracking, and the layouts are repetitive. Even if you don't mind all that, there's definitely room for improvement. His rating for the dungeons? Terrible. He went on and on about how horrible they feel. Same goes with the UI, he called it "garbage". The rest of the review on the negatives goes on like this.
Now, when he talks about positives like graphics, or the gameplay, the game is just "pretty good" or "pretty solid", but "insert random critique". The graphics "look like other games" and "he can't put his finger" on why he doesn't enjoy them. He went on to say said that "if the game came out 5-10 years ago, it would've been impressive, but now not so much". These are aspects where D4 is miles ahead of the competition, without question. Being the absolute best in the genre at something warrants a "pretty solid", a critique and downplay.
Now before people jump down my throat, I don't expect MrLlama, nor anyone else, to suck D4's dick or something. He can have his own preferences. I don't want him to sing the game praises - personally, I pretty much agree with 90% of the things Kripp said in his review video (which are true criticism).
But it just shows how a lot of the D2 fanbase (and not only) is just fucking itching to shit on the game. When it does something good, it's pretty good (with caveats), but when it does something bad, it's fucking terrible and trash. Nothing it ever does, and nothing it ever changes can be truly good, there must be always something wrong with the game. Every single aspect is nitpicked and painted in a bad light, all under a thin veneer of "critique". The mask even slips off at some point and he says "Let's be honest, this game is basically D3.5".
This isn't a review and there's no genuine interest in what the game does and how it could improve - it's an excuse to shit on it so his fanbase of D2 purists are happy. That's all.
I agree that the non-skippable side quest dialogue is extremely annoying.
I like mrLama, but I dont think that anyone who plays that much Diablo 2 could ever be objective about Diablo 4 and because of that I wouldnt put any weight on his opinions.
Posting the latest MrLlama video on this sub is like opening a portal to hell.
I stopped at bad repetition is bad but it seems to be fine to open a new game after every pindle. It's fine that he likes D2 more than D4. I get it... He is one of the biggest content creators there... On D4 he would be one of many average streamers.
I still like his D2 content though...
I don't know how people are able to watch his videos with his high pitch voice. Add to the fact that all he does is whine about D4. Like nails on a chalkboard. Go back to D2R and stay there.
