DETROIT'S HIDDEM GEM that you NEED to VISIT! | A Guide to BELLE ISLE from a Detroit LOCAL

welcome back my friends to a brand new michigan adventure today's michigan adventure i am taking you all the way to belle isle which is known as detroit's hidden gem so today i'm going to share with you all the things that you need to see and do here on the island and let's just put this way it's something that's going to be put on your michigan bucket list [Music] [Music] so where exactly is belle isle located so belle isle is a small little island on the detroit river between detroit and windsor canada so right here behind me is detroit and then over here is windsor canada it's a really cool little island and definitely something that i think you need to see if you ever venture down to detroit [Music] we are starting our time here in belle isle at the famous fountain unfortunately i don't know why there is no water that is sad but the fountain is super intricate and definitely something that i think that you need to see when you're here on island so let's first talk about entrance fee into the island so if you are going to bike or cross over via your legs walk on over the macarthur bridge then it is free to enter but if you're going to come over via car then it is going to cost you money so this is technically a state park so you either need a recreational passport which is a 12 or you can do a day pass for 9. belle isle was originally founded by the french in the 1700s and it wasn't until the early 1800s when the city of detroit bought the island but before it was considered belle isle it was considered hog island but here on the island there are a lot of really pretty historic buildings that you can walk around inside this one super beautiful we cannot go inside but i cannot wait to show you all of the other really pretty buildings here on the island [Music] so the next step that you need to make here on belle isle is to the nancy brown piece carillion so this is a bell tower slash clock tower that is dedicated to peace but also if you come here you'll stumble across a very pretty garden um that is just kind of like sprinkled throughout [Music] so the island of belle isle is actually 982 acres and on those 982 acres are some really cool buildings like the one right here behind me and this is the conservatory which also has an aquarium so both the conservatory and the aquarium are both free to enter and i cannot wait to show you how cool the conservatory is inside [Music] [Music] [Music] one thing to keep in mind when you come here to visit the conservatory and the aquarium both are free to enter and if you want to leave a donation that is always welcome all right you guys the conservatory was super super cool there's several different areas with different plants from all over now sadly we are here at the aquarium and it is closed now the conservatory is open wednesday through sunday and the aquarium is only open friday saturday and sunday sad but just make sure you plan ahead if you want to come and see the aquarium it is a hot day here in michigan so there was a food truck with ice cream i ended up getting the double shot cappuccino this is like a coffee yeah mm-hmm that's nice sharaya ended up getting the peanut butter cup and you guys there's actual peanut butters cups in there i know um so good all right you guys one stop that you need to make to cool down in the summer is here at one of the beaches and it's definitely an urban oasis from detroit you have beautiful city views behind us the gorgeous blue river the detroit river it's definitely a way to cool down here in the summer [Music] so after belle isle if you are visiting in the summer i highly suggest heading over the macarthur bridge to downtown detroit and kind of exploring downtown downtown is so much fun we are here at the spirit of detroit and i'm showing this one a little bit of downtown and i'm going to show you guys as well on what to do here in the summer [Music] so if you are in downtown detroit definitely come to joe lewis's fist here so this was a gift from sports illustrated because of joe lewis's fight against the jim crow laws so it is to symbolize the fight against racism [Music] all right you guys so i hope that you really enjoyed my time on belle isle so detroit is more than just a city there is so much to do and i hope that i was able to show you something new that the city has to offer so i hope that you put belle isle on your list the next time you are in the detroit area because it's definitely a fun place and it's relatively affordable to have a fun day in detroit now if you guys like this video then make sure you hit that like button and don't forget to subscribe if you're not already following along the adventures and stay tuned because we have a fun little michigan adventure coming up next all right you guys i will see you in the next one bye [Music]
