[Music] Detroit has a long history as a vibrant railroad city nearly a half-century ago when emery Goulash shot these action scenes of passenger trains in and around Motor City more than a half dozen major railroads serve the area most with their own distinctive passenger service often with cars from different railroads in the same colorful train today all of them are fallen flags absorbed or merged into larger companies during the non-stop mergers of the 1960s and 1970s go back with us to that era for a real blast from railroading x' past it was the last hurrah before the homogenize a ssin of passenger service nationwide by Amtrak the absorption of the Wabash railway into the Norfolk and Western Railway was pretty much an accomplished fact during this era the traces of the Wabash linger particularly with its equipment in the old paint scheme an n MW passenger train formerly Wabash number two comes off the Wabash bridge over the Rouge River at Del Ray junction with a mix of equipment Leonard for both railroads Wayne Junction tower in Wayne Michigan where the New York Central Cross of the C&O was one of Emory's favorite haunts a New York Central westbound train with two flat cars of containerized mail bounces over the diamonds the Baltimore in Ohio and Chesapeake and Ohio both had extensive operations in the Detroit area an eastbound B&O train runs on see no tracks at Dearborn the train crosses the New York Central on an overhead truss bridge a fourth Street Union Depot crew with a CNO switcher is switching cars as the B&O train arrives shooting from the wain junction tower a westbound glides past the camera inside the operator notifies the crew he has seen no defects on the Train another New York Central West Mound soon rolls through Wayne Junction it's a crisp day at fifth and center streets at Royal Oak Michigan as a southbound Grand Trunk Western train rolls through this is the Detroit connection to the International at Duran a c-note rain comes off the viaduct heading west the automobiles coming down this street bring back memories of an earlier era when cars were big and gasoline with truth [Applause] the CNO train descends the viaduct ramp and heads for Delray another c-note rain descends the busy ramp it's late afternoon and the Sun highlights the Detroit skyline this is another of those trains that use blocka motives from both railroads which were operated basically as one system you you
