Determining the Height of Cut on Your Mower

welcome to Thursday tech tip with me Kelly George where each week we will deliver proven tips on how to take care of your lawn let's get growing hello everybody and welcome to my shop this is where the magic happens and today on Kelly's tech tip we're going to discuss how to set the height of cut on your mower in many cases the mower you purchase will have numbers or letters on it which tell you how high your mower is cutting then many times these numbers are not accurate that is why you need to know how to check the height of your mower before you start to work on any of your mowers be sure to locate your spark plug and pull the boot off so the engine cannot automatically start causing injury to your hands the reasons why you want to know the height of cut of your mower is that so you do not scalp your grass causing harm creating fair spots it is a good rule throughout the summer time that your high to cut is at a minimum of three inches this will help produce good density and color it will help your turf to recover from eat and drop stress throughout the summer and it'll also help keep the weed population down in your lawn so this is a real easy task the only tools required our tape measure in this particular instance we have a mulching mower you may have a mower at home that has a discharge chute that you can just remove in this case we're going to remove this shield to expose where the blade is under the deck we're going to look in and reach for the blade pull it around so that we can effectively see it pull out our tape measure measure from the bottom of the bench in some cases it's just a even garage floor measure from the bottom of the blade to the top of the bench and that is our measurement you can go ahead and take notice of the markings on your mower and record what height of cut it is as you're going through the process of measuring the height of cut it would be a smart thing to the court the height of cut each setting so that you don't have to go through this process over and over again so something to consider as you're setting your height of cut the more leaf surface the more photosynthesis the more photosynthesis the more energy the plant has be sure to use these techniques before you buy another lawnmower so that you know that your mower can at least mow a minimum of three inches your lawn will thank you for it you
