we're often asked to give money to charity but what if the charitable cause asking for donations is not all it seems you may have heard the story surrounding CBS's investigation into fake war stories something that is now known as stolen valor and even included the man thought to be the oldest surviving Civil War veteran while coming up for some despicable examples of phonies preying on the kindness of others number 10 Sean yet men when Sean yet Minh went shopping on Black Friday in 2014 he was wearing camouflage fatigues and showing off military honors that it would have been impossible for him to earn something that was immediately obvious to a real veteran of Afghanistan Ryan Burke Burke notice that yet Minh was wearing three Combat Infantryman badge ah's and decided to interrogate him yet Minh claimed that he was a true Army Ranger and had been awarded all three badges while serving in Afghanistan however only one badge is ever awarded for a campaign unfortunately it is unclear whether Pennsylvania authorities were able to bring any charges against them as it turns out stealing the respect afforded to soldiers and veterans when it does not do is apparently more common than we might expect frank Gervase was one such culprit who attended a remembrance service in Ottawa Canada in 2014 while pretending to be a decorated soldier he was eventually revealed to be a fake and given a suspended prison sentence number nine Rick strand LOF Rick strand lost life story as detailed on Facebook included time spent in the Israeli Defense Forces being awarded the Purple Heart and a job at Colorado krav maga none of which was true fortunately real krav maga employees were able to set the record straight but even by the time strand loft joined Facebook under the name Rick Duncan he had already been outed by the Colorado veterans alliance for falsely claiming to be a decorated and severely wounded marine strain lofts false accounts of his service end of suffering through PTSD and earned him respect and credibility from a variety of people including police officers politicians and real veterans he even volunteered to raise money for veterans and campaigned for charitable causes unfortunately he did this while claiming honors that were not due and 2009 strand loth was charged under the 2006 Stolen Valor Act but he was to be given a reprieve in 2012 when his case was overturned courts ruled that the valor act violated his right to free speech as yet it's unknown whether strand law for teens his true name or has continued creating false identities number eight fake homeless people being homeless and forced to beg for money on the streets is the last thing any of us would want so why would you choose that life willingly if the money is good of course in fact Emily from Cambridge England views it is just another job saying it's work there aren't many other options but all is not what it seems emily is not homeless at all since she receives benefits and a paid for flat from the government despite this she turns up to beg on the streets every day and claims the alternative would be to be a hooker the interview with Emily is part of a UK documentary series which explored fake homelessness in British town centres which is a growing problem genuine homeless people had been venting their frustration at the fact that fake beggars will receive money despite having homes and benefits which could have gone to them according to Merseyside police around 8% of people arrested for begging between 2015 and 2018 did actually have accommodations the findings have resulted in advice being given to the general public - by all means give homeless people a warm drink or food but only give money to charities who are known to be genuine number 7 AJ dicking AJ dickin alleged that he was a former Navy SEAL who had participated in numerous covert missions from Vietnam to Afghanistan and had even earned two medals of Honor unbelievably he even claimed to be the man who had shot Osama bin Laden in fact Dickon had never been a Navy SEAL and his true goal was to establish a security firm something for which he would require substantial investment from other parties according to Navy veteran Carol Roberts he's a big guy he commands authority and it was this personality that convinced two prominent local doctors to invest almost 1 million in his new security firm eventually Dickon was outed by seal senior chief Don Shipley who said that if he was asked to confirm the authenticity of Dickens credentials one more time he would take this grenade pull the pin and blow himself up he knew immediately that Dickens discharge papers had been printed off the internet more to the point he claimed to have won two medals of Honor something which hadn't happened to any military man since World War one as of 2014 Dickon was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison without parole for an unrelated firearms although this was not a sentence for stolen valor many genuine veterans were glad to see him put behind bars number six John Albert II John Marcus Albert II was first exposed as a fake Navy SEAL veteran back in 2008 when the couple that he was staying with while homeless reached out to the prisoners of war Network they said that Albert II had told them about his experiences as a prisoner of war a claim which the organization proved to be false in the aftermath Alberti's name was included on their web site fake warriors org which lists phony veterans until the site later took the names down but Albert II was to feature in the news for stolen valor again in 2014 after his death the friend found military discharge papers among his possessions and submitted them to the American Legion the discharge papers meant that Albert II was eligible to be buried with full military honors in a cemetery reserved for military heroes according to Navy SEAL veteran Don Shipley the discharge papers were obviously faked to the extent that the guy couldn't even spell saigon since the burial there have been caused to dig up Alberta's body and have him reinterred without military honors in a different Cemetery something which has happened to other culprits of stolen valor number five Jacob Windsor Jenny Evans is the daughter of a retired cop who wished to reunite her dad with his former police dog IV she set up a GoFundMe page in early 2017 but the page was soon taken over by a man calling himself Jacob Windsor who claimed to be speaking on behalf of the Evans family Windsor alleged that he was a freelance journalist who was holding the fort Virginia while she took a well-needed holiday posting an update to the fundraiser page Windsor urged followers to donate money to a PayPal account in order to reach their target of a hundred thousand pounds which he claimed would be used to buy another four dogs so that Ivy could be released despite thousands being donated to the cause concerns were raised after jenny realized the ownership of her petition had been transferred to someone else the man known as jacob windsor which was not his real name was found and arrested but later released on bail but there was a silver lining as all of the donations were able to be refunded through GoFundMe number four Kaitlin McClure Marc D'Amico and Johnny Bobby jr. it started as a feel-good story but soon turned sour in October 2017 Kaitlin McClure claimed to have been bought gas by homeless man Bobby jr. while stranded without cash in Philadelphia when she returned to the area to repay him the pairs struck up an unlikely friendship which led to McClure and her boyfriend setting up a GoFundMe page for him to rebuild his life over 14,000 donors contributed $400,000 to Bob its cause but he soon reported that the money had been withheld from him and spent by McClure and D'Amico as it turned out no part of the story was true the gas station incident had never happened McClure D'Amico and Bob had already knew each other and had devised a ruse turned some free money by March 2018 all of the fundraiser money had been spent on cars jewelry bags and expensive holidays as their story unraveled all three were summoned to court at the end of 2018 Bobbitt was eventually released subject to weekly monitoring number 3z confused 1 again reddit users put their sleuthing skills to the test once again in early 2018 when they exposed a fundraiser which claimed to be donating to Venezuelan children it asked followers for Bitcoin donations which could then be put towards buying food supplies for the needy in reality the fundraiser had been started by reddit users Z confused 1 again and the money was being sent to a gambling website to pay off his own mounting debt it also became clear that the photo of the hungry Venezuelan children posted by Z confused one again was fake the reddit scammer had simply cropped and inverted the original image which was from a legitimate charity and posted it in extremely poor quality after the deception had been discovered Z confused one again responded that his Bitcoin address was that of an online casino to avoid the Venezuelan regulations and taxes but the gig was up unfortunately the donations he received were valued at around $600 and unable to be recovered number 2 extreme games to be a success on YouTube you have to catch your audience's attention but I'm not sure pretending to have a terminal illness is the best way to do that in September 2018 thomas and jonathan smith otherwise known as youtube channel extreme games posted a video titled or quitting YouTube because we're dying not clickbait the brothers went on to explain that our bodies literally can't do it anymore and that they couldn't live much longer with their kidney problems in the video they visit their doctor in Los Angeles in the hope of being cured despite the doctor himself commenting the truth that neither one of them has a disease it all played out as a sort of advert the doctor's clinic in a bizarre twist in which they started urging people to visit the clinic for their own issues but the brothers are confident they are not long for this world especially with the crippling side-effects of their illness such as acne and vertigo every single day I wake up it's like just absolute bizarrely they go on to announce a giveaway of two iPhone X's is their final gift to their fans the winners of which still haven't been announced despite people in the comments asking this video has since been deleted from their Channel but not before it caught the attention of news websites and other youtubers such as Leon lush who were quite rightly disgusted by their false claims number one Jack Fisher when six year old Daisy de mid tragically died in February 2018 and Nottinghamshire England her devastated family faced yet another ordeal in the aftermath of her death a fake JustGiving page had been set up by a man known as Jack Fisher who was posing as one of Daisy's uncles the page claimed that the family was short of money and would appreciate donations to be able to have a funeral for Daisy in a sickening post the full amount asked for was 3,000 pounds however this was neither true nor was it legitimately set up by Daisy's family fortunately just a few days later Nottinghamshire police had been made aware that the fundraising page was a fake and warned well-wishers not to donate to it a spokesperson for the website just giving later made a statement which confirmed that the 140 pounds which had been donated to the page had been refunded to the relevant parties sadly while local police carried out an investigation into the fake page the culprit has not yet been brought to justice so which of these people did you consider to
