hello and welcome in this video I will show you how to deploy printers with group policy we have four machines a Windows 7 client Windows XP client our domain controller and then we have a plain Jane print server it's just running server oh wait there's nothing fancy about it and we don't have anything installed to begin click add roles next and just select print and document services next next and just select print server click Next and let the install complete and that's it you have a print server installed you can see the management under Administrative Tools and now we're ready to begin installing ensuring printers let's begin by creating a new port and our printer is at 10.20 1.5 11 it's always a good idea to have the printer online when you're trying to auto detect will go much quicker and there it is and let's just add a new printer we're going to use the port we just created and we use the HP Universal printing us makes life a lot easier dealing with just one driver and we'll just leave that to be our printer name this will take a few seconds to run and then once it's complete you will have a shared printer ok the printer is successfully installed we'll click finish and you'll see it's right there ok the next step is to go to our domain controller and create a new group policy so you'll see I have a domain set up I have a couple test users you'll notice that the test user is not an admin and let's just create a new group policy you want to keep the number of policies you have being deployed to a minimum because they do have 34 Meg's in size and that can start to take a little bit longer to download and login if you're having a bunch of them so let's call our new policy deploy printers and you'll see that it shows up on our COBOL developers the next step is to go back to the print server and select the printer we just created right click and say deploy with group policy and we're going to browse to the group policy we just created now keep in mind that you can deploy printers either to computers or tweezers in this instance I will select per user and then don't forget to add over here let's apply this that's good and okay all right so if we look in our deploy printers tab it shows up another thing we can do is if we look at our domain controller and we inspect that group policy we just created under the settings you'll notice that now you'll see printer connections whereas before there was nothing set up and now we're all set so let's check our client we'll run a quick GP update you'll see we have no printers currently except for the default fax and it will take a couple seconds to show up there it is now there is one minor caveat with this Windows XP requires one extra step so let's show you that to deploy a printer to Windows XP you have to go back to your domain controller and there's utility called push printer connections Exe you can download that right from the web you'll need to edit your existing group policy and if you're deploying it by machine you want to go under policies Windows settings and add it to your startup script so you'll browse and just stick it right in there and that will deploy it by machine if you're doing it by user you'll need to add it to their logon script same process just add the file to the folder and you're good to go let's hand over and take a look at our windows xp client so we have no printers so we'll do a quick restart you can run gpupdate it doesn't always work if it doesn't show up the first time don't freak out XP is not as reliable sometimes it takes a couple of reboots sometimes it takes 10-15 minutes it's just not quite as reliable okay we'll give it a minute for group policy to run it's going to be downloading push printer Exe in the background from the net log on share and there it is so that's it that's all there is to it you will notice if you look at your print server that you can apply this deployed printer to multiple group policies so you can continue to have multiple policies either by user or by machine per printer hopefully that helps out then good luck
