our first guest tonight is that rare performer whose greatness has been certified by the oscars tony salt peppa and vogue you name it you can see him now in theaters and on apple tv plus in the tragedy of macbeth and he directs michael b jordan in a journal for jordan in theaters and on demand now please welcome denzel washington [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] thanks for coming it's good to see you good to be seen by you if you were not here right now would you be watching the cardinals rams game would you be watching is it on has it started yeah it's on sure yeah monday night i guess not i was thinking about you yesterday because i know you're a cowboys fan yes and i was wondering as the way that game ended i was wondering what like what kind of a football viewer are you is there a profanity um do you sit quietly and suffer how does it go it was some profanity yeah of course i've been a cowboy fan since i was about six well long time yeah i'm a real cowboy fan and that was that was a mess yesterday that was a mess yeah that's tough huh yeah would you rather win an oscar this year or a super bowl for the cowboys [Applause] a few years ago i asked your son john david he was here i don't know if you saw this but i asked him because i know you played football and you coached him in football right and i asked him what kind of a in case you didn't see that let's find out what john david said his dad was as far as coaching goes what about your dad was he ever your coach as a kid yeah he was he was he was and how did that go uh you know he's a great actor you know he's a fantastic entertainer and as sorry dad no yeah my dad was great i mean because he believed it you know he gets in the characters so he was getting into character with us all right he's the cover yeah he was getting into those very long-winded speeches you know you know we literally you know our head the helm is bigger than the body so we yeah we're just ready to go on the field where are the orange slices right like let's go all right all right we get it fancy you know so but he didn't mention that they won the whatever the local championship was they were they were he yeah do you enjoy doing that being a coach in the kids or was it like nobody else wants to coach you have to go in and do it i loved it i love it i love because kids will go they'll they'll go anywhere you you send them you know they'll follow you and they'll believe like he said they'll believe i haven't had that experience yeah i coached my son's basketball team no one listened to me ever at all not even a little bit i had to pay him in pokemon cards to get him just to not like intentionally fall on the ground during the games my my daughter played basketball too olivia but she would play like her fingernails were wet she just ran around like that the whole time like her fingernails were wet she would just die i don't want to and she she wouldn't wear basketball sneakers because i'm not wearing those they don't look so she was not destined for greatness on the court i guess not destiny someone i know who knows you also told me that you like you love watching high-speed chases on television is that true you do yeah i love you too i love them too well you get hooked you get hooked you get hurt you get up do you find yourself rooting for the guy to get away sometimes i want to go down there yeah right i'm like if i just get in my car and go i could i could end this they should have used the pick maneuver right there your brother the big maneuver see it's yeah i mean really if denzel washington suddenly showed up i would think the guy would probably go all right i'm pulling over yeah we had one right here by our theater uh last week and do you have one in your head that's like your favorite i think you and i should go out and look for one one or honestly with my just one day we didn't go out my favorite part of those high-speed chases is listening to the local newscasters try to fill time and just saying things like well if i was in this situation i was like you're not going to be in this situation that's the best part of it they don't know what to say and and of course the drama rarely do you see anything that might end in death i guess is really what i'm saying on television you don't see that for a reason i would like to get a set of those spike strips though [Laughter] [Applause] yeah you come out of a restaurant no problem at all you have directed this film a journal for jordan which is based on a true story and a really like sad emotional touching and all of those things and sad story about a soldier this is the first movie you've directed that you've not starred in as well is that because you figured one sexiest man alive was enough for the film that it would be too much for you and michael b jordan i didn't want to have to fire myself [Laughter] not just one there was nothing in it for me you know is it a lot harder to uh direct a movie that you're in you know warren beatty said to me years ago just name dropping uh-huh it's good one feels pretty good right yeah but when you name drop it's really not like name right because i didn't want to be in the first film i directed it and he said no no be in it i said why he said because it's a way in that you're used to as an actor you used to so be in it and and so i realized i was like okay i'll just imagine i'm playing all the parts and and that was the way i got into it wow people have often called you they say they would say you're the next sydney poitier and then michael b jordan is somebody they would say you are the next denzel washington and so now here you guys which i don't know seems a little weird do you like when people say that uh beats a sharp stick an eye yeah right okay and i know better than the next willie johnson from around the corner yeah you don't want to be willing you don't want to be the next willie johnson i've been the last willie i've been i don't know what that cindy partier passed away uh last week obviously when did you meet was the first time you met him do you remember i was doing one time i remember i was doing a play a soldier's play which went on to become a soldier story of the movie and won the pulitzer prize all that kind of stuff so uh he came to see the play and he came backstage and took pictures with all of us and he everybody was sort of thinning out and he came over to me he said you know you're good you're very good i was like you know what he said it was cindy pointed like yes sir thank you did you know that he was there watching the play when you're not in it no i didn't know are you glad you didn't know i'm glad i didn't know yeah yeah that's never good it's never good never don't you don't feel like you can dig even deeper and be better if you know somebody that you really care about their opinion is in the audience no no no no it takes you out of it it takes you out of the you know out of the play i got you oh that makes sense yeah and you guys became friends over the years yes we did and and and i would just go over to his house and hang out and visit him and record him i have all kinds of uh uh tapes of him just talking about stuff audio tapes video as well were you doing that for a project or just for your own yes i said you mind if i you know he said not good and he didn't mind huh i heard sidney poitier curse oh you did which of the which of the many wonderful women oh he used them all i was like oh [Applause] not mr tibbs hey those motherfu you i'm not like i'm not someone who knows anything about shakespeare and i was like i don't know what this is gonna be but i was totally obs i i was taken by this film and it made me realize how much of what we see now whether it be like game of thrones or the sopranos like it's all right there it's easy to follow forget the language they've done them wrong and he's going to get them back it's so good simple as that yeah he's done him wrong and he's going to get him back yeah that's all you need to know he's not he's not exactly in the clear on his own well yeah at that part but yeah you know this would be your uh tenth oscar nomination i liked it but i like that that's news to you because i would have like i could actually have like it written in chalk somewhere in my house we're at nine we gotta get to ten you do okay good that was the best performance you've ever seen by the way excuse your great performance there's a video from uh 2017. i don't know if you guys have seen this it's uh it has recirculated it was a big video then and it came back again you're in chicago and um you were looking for like a barbecue place right yeah i was looking for where my cousins used to live like 19. he's acting like she's 19. juanita what do you remember about that day when denzel suddenly appeared and you're out i remember that he came i was only in the house to receive a refrigerator but i couldn't at the time i was still waiting and i didn't leave in time because i saw this big trump drive up and after he dropped out well he came out i don't know my daughter said denzel i didn't believe her and i don't know how he got us on the porch that quick it's like an anger just flew up and i jumped up and and when i knew anything i was holding and telling i wasn't gonna let him go were your friends jealous when they found out you had a visit from denzel i know everyone was happy everyone was so happy to see you and they are still calling me asking me whenever i heard from him i never heard from insisting i'm thankful that i got in touch with him today you didn't give me your number you sent your son back to give me a kiss i thought i didn't have time to give it to him because he was in a hurry right i thought you're looking for the barbecue place did you ever find the barbecue leon's barbecue how was it they have leon has a new place now so we all set free they they said that that leon had heard about this story and decided to open a place i don't know if that's because of that leon i don't know is that true that's what they told me but i wasn't i didn't make it to the opening okay um all right well maybe leon will send you something oh that would be great that would be great yeah well we just wanted you to suppose he was supposed to send denzel full of gallons of barbecue sauce and a case of he probably would still get it now yeah well it sounds like a lot of people sounds to me like a lot of promises were broken [Laughter] but i still have my refrigerator as long as the refrigerator showed up are you gonna go see denzel's new movies he directed a journal for jordan which is in theaters and on demand and he's in the tragedy of macbeth as well oh yes i'm waiting i'm just waiting well don't wait they're out i never missed his movies i look at his movies over and over and over [Laughter] i always watch his movies yeah all right well it's
