[Music] this is a new generation may I introduce Jerry Jones I just want to say this there is no substitute for when it's not what I want to do necessarily a what happened this kind of opportunity doesn't come open ever again and I've got to do it nothing's gonna change cowboy fans get ready to watch the Dallas Cowboys be the best in NFL [Music] we must win we will win when is the name of the game [Music] well I came here 53 years ago in 1966 January 1966 I've only coached at two schools and and universities and that was the University of Arkansas where play there was a freshman in 1955 and finished my career there when the service came back out of the service thought I was going to law school Frank Broyles talked me into coaching and I ended up coaching seven years at Arkansas and I was in Fayetteville for 11 and Jerry Jones happen to be on that team and Jimmie Johnson were on that team and actually I considered Jimmy and Jerry good friends I really do have known him since they were teenagers and Jimmy was a short little nose guard and but he was a linebacker and actually he had great quickness and they played them in nose guard and he was disruptive so he ended up being a player okanagan gives ground but the defense breaks throw Williams and Jim Johnson chase him to the Aggie 12 for loss of 13 Jerry was a guy that's playing fullback then ended up we got better talent fullback so he booth hood to the offensive line the next year the [ __ ] stay on the ground of midfield then Marshall comes up with one of the year's exciting runs he swings to his laugh follows Brazel and Jerry Jones and weaves his way 33 yards down to the Baylor 16 before Whidden brings him down when undefeated and they won about 22 games in a row and the beat Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl for national championship Jerry and I know we've of course played together at Arkansas he was on offense I zone defense and you know I write names in it in J and so they roomed us together on all the away trips so we were roommates and we knew each other you know through thick and thin you know all the way back at Arkansas he was always you know finagle and doing this he always had a lot of irons in the fire which he does now and you knew you know all the way back at Arkansas this guy's going to be super successful at whatever he does Jim he was on staff here at Oklahoma you know a lot of people don't know that Jimmy was four years of coach here with me at the Oklahoma we were assistants together became head coach he was my defensive line coach and then he went back to Arkansas to be the defensive coordinator there but we were all together in the 70s which I'm gonna show you the way football should be played exact and I'm ready give me your best enjoy the thrill of real college football action thought you came to play football with the VCR College Bowl game oh yeah go for a field goal score the winning touchdown that's two three I just football great I know all those guys and you know what they were like and it was a good time we won a lot of football games won a lot of national championships and we won more games anyone the seventies here at Oklahoma we won two national championships back-to-back 138 games in a row without the people don't remember this has been so long ago we want more football games in the seventies you know the school [Music] I knew Jared when I was a head coach here Jerry was here as a as a old man he came here to make his fortune in the early seventies so I spent a lot of time with Jerry when he was here in Oklahoma and making that run he made here and so he got started here and and so I've been kind of close to Jerry all through his life you know we socialized here and then I got that call in 1994 and he said that you wanna coach the Cowboys and I said no damn job was opening he said let's take some the base I said well he called me when the jobs open we'll talked in from ABC this is World News Tonight with Peter Jennings sitting in tonight Forrest Sawyer I remember being in Phoenix when the news came down and Dallas tonight after all the speculation it came down to what the parties say is a mutually agreed upon divorce it was a news channel in Phoenix that a buddy of mine called me and said hey turn the news on Jimmie Johnson just got fired and I was like what are you talking about pretty unusual to replace the coach who led your team to two back-to-back Super Bowl championships but that's exactly what Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did today Jimmie Johnson is out as Dallas head coach there was no understanding or no rhyme or reason to why we lost our head coach and that was the shocking part it happened so fast you know no one knew that there was any you know rift or anything else just like you know you get up and you look on TV one day because Johnson's announced that he's not gonna be the Cowboys told you anymore we have mutually decided that I would no longer be the head football coach with the Dallas Cowboys how does this happen now I think everybody was asking that you know those of us who follow it from the day one from that Saturday night with here in Jimmy took over Tom's fired who followed it from day one we all Jerry's gonna be in charge of socks and jobs I intend to know if have an understanding of the cleat cleat situation I intend to have an understanding of the player situation I intend to have an understanding of Jaques and socks he did a hell of a job on socks and jobs but as they started to win the Super Bowl Jerry wanted more football credit Jimmy you ain't getting no more football credit or any football credit because you made me the guy in charge of football head of like a nine yard average on punt returns really Marty we're right from Boston College I had a good year but should be really a good receiver in our offenses I've never seen a coach either get fired or just flat-out I mean as young as Jimmy was flat I just I'm done I just didn't see the the same Drive that I had a few years ago and in order for me to be the best that I can be I've got to have that drive I'm a little bit of a gypsy I kind of get bored and I want to do other things and and so yeah I really kind of had the feeling you know that I was going to be leaving Dallas and actually they bought a home there and here in the Florida Keys you know a lot of people talk Super Bowls but only a few can walk and know that they can possibly get into Super Bowls and we were wanting a few teens that had that opportunity every year at that time to get to a Super Bowl so we lost Jim Dillon Wow what impact would this have you know we knew we had the players you know but he left the question is what now America I'm cancelling my season tickets that's it the aftershocks of today's action may rattle the club for years to come I'm watching the news go down and then I see Michael Irvin of all people throwing a garbage can in our locker room and I'm in Phoenix yeah oh yo stay answers out oh oh I was just so upset that Jimmy was not there all along when this thing was brewing I never thought it would get to this you never thought it could have I wouldn't I never know no way you're you're getting rid of a guy that comes off winning back-to-back Super Bowls there's no way that's going to happen and then it did I don't think anybody in this room or anybody watching truly can understand until you walk in our shoes for whatever the reason whether a dissatisfaction of what you see in the mirror from my perspective or what I worked with myself this thing was built on positives this thing was built on a on a vision you had to be positive back in 1989 we were dealing out front and being positive and when a couple of negatives start [ __ ] creep in the end then that's a concern there's such a misconception about Jerry's relationship my relationship back and forth and how we operate yeah anything big that ever happened we always communicated back and forth we always talked about it and and I don't know that we've ever had a situation where he said no or I said no we were always on the same page so there's no blame it's just a matter of we've gone through a little transition here and well maybe it's a big transition but but hey the Dallas Cowboys will be right on top and so there's no blame but you've really missed the point here if you don't know that that we're friends yet I don't want to comment today about any any of the issues regarding future coach you want to get back into coding I'll never coast in college game again it's no fun anymore what about the pros it's that well I might be interested but they're only a few good job when the time came for for Jerry to hire Jimmy's replacement it all happened almost like simultaneously like I think in most cases Jimmy Johnson being fired would have been the story of the day in the Dallas Morning News the next day but the fact that we already knew Switzer was his replacement made it even a bigger story that as hard as it was to believe that Jerry Jones would replace a 2-time Super Bowl winning coach the thought that he would replace him with Barry Switzer who had been on his couch in Norman Oklahoma as a retired god of college football was just so completely unthinkable my initial reaction on hearing Switzer there's no way Jerry's not going to do that there's no way he does that he did it and Barry for he's on his couch in Norman minding his own business life was great for Switzer and here comes deer I got the call from lace Lowell who was on the staff and he says you know there's not much lovely Camelot down here but I think's I really go I'm fine with this two back-to-back Super Bowls but it might blow up and sure enough it did March 28th when I got the call 1994 Jerry said you come to Dallas I remember driving down there [Music] I had bought a brand new Mercedes I was driving down my new car and I was by myself and I was single at the time had they call me kids obviously and let them know [Music] I knew our step in the tough situation that really was I've got the probably the toughest job anyone's ever had pro football [Music] I'm inheriting a great football team but I don't know what their gyms will be I [Music] was a stranger [Music] it's a tough situation to walk into [Music] five years ago 1989 basically I said we will win we must win and winning is the name of the game nothing has changed in five years as far as that go for our organization the coach of the Dallas Cowboys one of the main criteria is that we can work together the opportunity to have available to us a coach with the outstanding record and with the skills that would be so unique to the Dallas Cowboys going back to a third straight Super Bowl of being successful we're pretty obvious I feel very confident that the continuity can be kept in place and be motivated with the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys Barry Switzer let me introduce you to it ok Thank You Jerry I I was here at 7:30 this morning I know a lot of you were here and you're tired and worn out all day long been waiting for this press conference I told Jerry I was ready to go at 8:30 but he wasn't so it's Jerry's fault you can blame him again he's the bad guy again the day you just never know what you're gonna get and we talked before every time he went into a press conference and sometimes it throw right back out there what we talked about and sometimes it was like there was never a discussion at all Jerry's the bad guy here right he's a good guy I read the poll the paper today two switchers credit he came in like let's have a party I'm tanned rested ready I'm ready to go I want to start tomorrow it was surreal it just wasn't what you expect from an NFL head coach I hope I can do as good a job as Jimmy Johnson that's what you're hoping and that's damn sure what you're hoping I think even Gerry was a little taken aback by Barry's behavior in that press conference we gonna do it we got a job to do and week on a duck buyback is that when he said weekend we had job to do we gonna do baby I'm fun is this for you hey hey I love it it's great I can't really headings you know I the magnitude of it hasn't really hit me at I'm you know sometimes I think about I think about my kids I want to see my son play football this fall Doug's up with Joplin Missouri I wanted to go to all his games and thinking well that's not possible now you know I won't get to see your play I'll just have to see them on film and I really regret that I mean that's again something I've really looked forward to get something you gotta give up some what just me it was essentially everybody in the media there may have been a couple of guys going this is gonna be good this is gonna be fine not many of them because everybody in the local media was going what the hell yeah but if it was even telling players other players were living the Jimmy think Jimmy's gone it's a total screwup even 8but was trying to go look you're right there you like I think they'll respond to him and so I I anticipate us being able going to next season feeling but with what we're trying to do and feeling good with the direction overhead of the first player I want to talk to was Troy because my relationship with him my feeling about him and I know his feeling about me Barry Switzer is a football coach I offered a scholarship first time I ever saw Troy walked up to him and said I'm once you start thinking about playing for the Sooners you'll be in great players University of Oklahoma first time I ever saw him throw a football he was special and he started for me as a sophomore Jerome Brown breaks his leg and Troy's sits on the sidelines there yet the rest of the year and watch Gemayel Holloway a kid from Los Angeles takes us all the way to a national championship well Troy obviously I saw the hurt and disappointment his eyes on sidelines and the crutches he's my quarterback he's my starter he could have done the same thing we probably would have beat Miami that day of hitting that broken it's like but what happens is that the young man comes in in the spring and says coach I'm thinking about transferring I knew this wouldn't happen and you sooner or later I'd have to deal with this and I understood it more as they fathered the son type of relationship than a coach to player type of relationship because I wanted nothing best because this is a class young man I said Troy I understand let's find out where you want to go he said it'll either be the school you picked three of them and I called all the coaches so the rest is history [Music] I can remember talking to Troy before Barry came here and he actually wasn't as opposed to the idea as he ultimately proved to be he said hey you know Barry was a very competitive guy when I was at oh you and very successful and driven I think the thing that caused him to lose Troy's support which was important if you're the coach of the Cowboys was the fact that he was following Jimmy and the fact that these players had only one doing it a certain way right they they only experienced success together and doing it jimmy's way cause jocelyn was Troy's guy it's unfortunate there's no question about that and I think that all the players would like to have seen Jimmy stay certain players needed that Coach Johnson style of coaching and I understand why some of those guys felt that way those guys that went 1 in 15 and saw maybe some lack of commitment lack of discipline they didn't want to slide back into that moment joy came off that one in 15 teams and he knew and saw guys who had bad habits hurt but what that could do to a team so I think somewhat Roy's concern was making sure that this team is mature enough to handle a coach like Barry Switzer it creates a lot of skepticism from players like Troy Aikman who are perfectionists I've never talked to Troy about it and I'm not sure if he believed that or not if that was the best thing for a young team you know is this gonna be good or not and so I think that was more than concern than anything you you got festival child America you got to feel good that very Switzer landed on his feet doing what he wants to do well maybe you gonna start making me feel good hello how did you thought about that first day I'm there in walks Jerry Jerry walks in closes the door and uh and it's just the two of us and he comes over and pulls chair up says sit down and I won't talk to you I said down chair and he says you know what kind of crack I gave you yesterday we signed last night he says I want you to tear it up I looked at my said well hon you want me to do that for and he said because I'm gonna give you a better one you're gonna give me a better one it says yeah I'm gonna give you a better one tear it up and I said well you send me the contract now send it to my agent my lawyer and let him look at and let him determine whether it's better or not and he got up he said I'll do that but he just walked toward the door and I looked at him and I said Jerry what the hell are you doing this point he says you know I got up this morning looked at myself in the mirror [Music] and a lightly sell for the first time says volumes to you about what a guy lived with a couple years being built like I got owns a team part of team had contribute to the team but never felt apart teeth anything else all right thank you so good to be here Jerry thank you for that opportunity this is what I look forward for really that's it's not yeah you know all the attention and all that's not important to me I want you there's going to be the most exciting that's gonna be the most challenging camp that we've ever been a part of and not just because Barry Switzer's coaching the Cowboys instead of Jimmy Johnson but also because we are in pursuit of a third straight Super Bowl one thing that does not change the media crush reporters and photographers literally falling down to get at the Cowboys I am ready today I'm finally getting around to do what I want to do and I'll be glad to get rid of you guys where I can go do it and say I'm gonna do one interview a day and that's it and let me go coach let me go do some veterans wanted to establish after they wanna practice that the coaching issue is no longer news I hope that here was in the next few days we would be asked those questions because you know here's the head coach and we accept that all I ask the players do is give me a chance I know they were all upset about what happened I don't blame them but I didn't have anything to do with them divorce I have a damn thing to it I was just asked to come in there keep the stay in the middle of the road and you know they had all worked together and accomplished a lot together and that was a guy coming in there via their head coach their boss Barry made very clear to us when he came in was look my coaching style has always been to hire the best people around me some guys want credit for everything and they want to sell the world that is all them he said I'd never coach like that even when I was in Oklahoma I had great assistants that did great jobs developing players and you guys had that in place here so I'm not gonna come in acting like it's all me and whether or not we win or not is because of me that's a lie and he was honest so I think a lot of guys appreciated that that's one thing you gotta admire about him he's like I'm not here to change them I'm here to just try to keep the wheels on this thing and try to get a certain other super boy he was one of the most humble these guys most direct guys you ever meet I chatted with very very briefly came in the waiting room and when I was working out in the middle of my workout and we just chatted it real briefly and we're gonna meet here tomorrow today after that he just told me to come by the office when I get a time and we'll go back with soundcheck and all he did was promised me he wasn't running the wishbone and I don't have to worry so I'll chat with him tomorrow guys that's all I know the office was still the same so I just said okay I got to get a man a fair shot we not really changed the system which he did comment on so he said we ought to feel comfortable about that the only thing that he has to do right now basically learn the system he's the one that's basically going through the major transaction only thing the transaction we going through his all excuse me is getting used to it a new head coach opposed to the Jimmie Johnson I came in my rookie year in 1992 Jimmie Johnson was the head coach and he had one style go like a well-oiled machine Jimmie Coast proof ear bottom line 14 13 10 seconds to go we're behind the Redskins RFK got a little wind to the limps got to be concerned about it let's go lean focus in can you make it everybody needs to be motivated making a difference if you're an 18 year old college freshman or you're a 35 year old business executive you need to be motivated and I think motivating professional players is as important as motivating college players Barry came in and it was totally a little bit more hands-off the intimidation factor wasn't there Jimmy was known to cut guys you know John Roper on the spot that wasn't Barry style I know so many great coaches the coach without fear and they coached with the positive reinforcement at of encouragement politician for four quarters this football team dominated offensively and defensively the whole ballgame everybody and every coach gets a game ball you know Barry's number one thing was keep everybody happy Barry kind of pulled back a little bit and it just kind of gave you a little more allows you to be more professional you're pro athletes young men the highest maturity level they're professionals are older they're more responsible they're adults and I'm tired of coaching 150 kids they're 17 18 years old that's what I did for 30 years I look forward to this anyone is ever Coast on both levels will tell you coaching professional level is so much easier in dealing with personnel and the people I'm not out there to deressa I would create crisises but they're gonna be enough up in are I want to be an encouragement yeah I don't want to be a hey I want to I want our players to love come to practice they get more out of them than one you strive scare the hell out of y'all and scream at them and threaten them and all that book there's a lot of ways to win there's no magic playbook let us know exactly what he's expected from us and we're gonna try to give him it when Barry Kane only one position really challenged which was the head coach this was Jimmie Johnson's coaching staff this was Butch Davis Dave Campbell Joe a Lozano the list goes on all Jimmy coaches it would be tough to come into a situation right now and go hire people a staff and put that together hell yeah I'll mitt that to you I would be right here with you guys right now I have a total rich and Brett there he'll uh-uh I ain't got time Jimmy was always pressing he was always pressed control man to control keep those hands up look at me coach what's the one pressing as much you know he left that kind of to his coaches and the coaches when you know they would use the gym ages on them as much as they were on us he let the assistant coach I don't think there's any doubt about that certainly assistant coaches have to do a great job you know you know and I'm not taking anything away from Bill Belichick first of all I've been in the game a long time to and around and I'm 82 years old he says do something he's a young kid to me but I've been through it all and seen it and I've known how all of them made it happen but a promise sure it's assistant coaches and the players the guys that preparing to play ever do what head coach says to him the two men for ball game he got a damn thing to what's gonna happen with my field the point I'm trying to make in all this is that is it belcheck then called defensive players didn't call it offensive blood he got assistant coaches gonna Jerry didn't bring those coaches in so how can you win and have those coaches to Butch Davis's of the world the day of Campbell's they wanted the job start by enjoy the excitement and the tremendous competitive situation of trying to be better than someone else or something else you're gonna let Jimmy go then I'm next I'm next up I have two Super Bowl rings I should be next up I go outside and I just never thought that Barry ever ever had a chance to have his finger print on this football team cuz I think he was set up for failure [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'll get everybody walked into the Barry Switzer show I'm like do see along with the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys Barry Switzer the Barry Switzer show was an interesting ride because you never quite knew what you're gonna get from Barry from week to week most weeks he was really into it prettiest solid defense especially with his linebackers Miller Brooks crawl arm step I think let's do this Thompson okay I'm not I wouldn't you thinking I was thinking about something else and this is all gonna be covered I'm thinking along today um he could be very funny there were a few hills and dams that would usually have to be edited out of the show because Barry's language could get a little salty the excitement of playing in the season I don't you start over damn of them but it was always something I look forward to doing you know always appreciated the opportunity to do because most weeks Barry made a lot of fun you know you were either for him or against him I mean he he kept score in his own mind and behind closed doors as to who he thought were the good guys and who were the bad guys but he never let it show in public very often the Cowboys have one more practice here tomorrow morning and then they do head back home and they are ready to go and cowboys coach Barry Switzer joins me here tonight I assume you're ready to go - I'm ready I'm gonna go back to Dallas if you had drawn it up exactly the way you wanted to do not think surprised you nothing disappointed you Oliver Stone couldn't really better Walt visiting I loved I mean really was I go through many camp the camp here if I had orchestrated it any better if he couldn't have been better I want to ask you something about tonight you know you've got you made a phone call - what's on it just go you said that we had a big controversy on her staff down here this cord and all and power struggle power struggle and you saying that's not true see I don't think you guys fabricate things you can't think I like this about there anything I said anything handsome said anything any other critics out there said about him it was like I don't give a damn what you say what do you write that's kind of his attitude I do think the public perception was was probably incorrect in a lot of ways but on the other hand Barry brought some of that on himself let's let's be honest about it he was a character he loved being a larger-than-life type of personality and that's always gonna make you polarizing don't you ever question that and Jerry Jones knows that do you know why because if I wasn't I say Jerry this is your team I'm your coach but if I don't like it and there comes down to decision between me and a coach or a player not the guys and we're talking about different level hey it's made of them handle that cuz I can go back and sit on my couch any day cuz I came to I didn't bother man media's never bothers me because I know this they never cover to kickoff and never brought one back they don't know a damn thing by what you're talking about half the time you era came into a situation it was almost a no-win situation and and I don't know that it's been duplicated or replicated in the NFL or many other situations in professional sports before since where if you won it was already set up for you there and so you really don't aren't gonna get the credit that you deserve and if he didn't win there was going to be royal hell to pay because this is the greatest team history of the Dallas Cowboys and and they don't people don't want to hear that you couldn't win three in a row first year it was going good in December they lost couple of games and they lost him Cowboys were the best team in football they were better in San Francisco they had proved that for two straight years but he wanted home theme you didn't want to be going out to that muck nastiness of many see it as the matchup of the year Oh sucks these two teams have met to decide the NFC champion in each of the past two seasons that players here at the ranch don't sit for anything more than what they believe it is Mazen develop into a rivalry you just have two good teams two quality teams that gives you a very interesting game Charles Haley may be the exception to the rule this week he like no other player looks forward to challenging his former team of which he helped claim two Super Bowl championships and Haley seems to be a lucky charm for Dallas for San Francisco hasn't been the same since he left I respected most of the guys there you know I respected 90% of them damn I left you know Harlan just taking all knives and just start stabbing me so you know I have nothing well for him and you know it just it breaks out every ounce of energy that's up to me when I play so most likely whoever wins between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco most likely win the Super Bowl so therefore that's just how it is [Music] we have the NFC Championship game this is by definition a polarized clash of cultures for the third year in a row the same two teams that's never happened since the merger [Music] [Applause] nice intercept down the field cut and then knocked away the turtle Novacek at the 30 the final score is San Francisco 38 Dallas 28 the king is dead long live the king we felt we let one get away we felt that we truly were a better team than the 49ers we felt that if we played our best game and they played their best game we beat them but we didn't play our best game and they did so there was a big disappointment there was a hurt there was a void in the team I was mad because we didn't protect Troy stood in there like I told me you don't throw interceptions you don't fund the damn football you don't make mistakes hey we're gonna win this one and now let's amp easy Ernie talked me into oh we go we got three points coach was four well took 3km completions we punted the ball I gave it 50 seconds to mediate they over Larry Brown they hit Jerry Rice finger Jeff catching in zone for a touchdown I'm dog cussing my ass all the way they head to the locker room I'm upset when I got feeling you did the wrong thing you're the one who made the decision that these guys fought all the way back only to get cheated but anyway [Music] Pass is incomplete intended for michael irvin the whole Cowboys sideline is looking for a penalty on this one you see he gets it should be he gets his left hand in there he got that left arm in there in front of him there's a flag on the play on the far side of the field I think Barry Switzer might have run into the referee official was booked on the fence you know I blame Barry for that I didn't think I should better probably did anybody just her head it's mainly comes down to if Jimmy had been there would this adapter and I think that would be the fair way to ask the question if we don't make those mistakes in the first five minutes of the ballgame you know we could beat San Francisco anyone's gonna hang half 100 on San Diego and a Super Bowl win won two in a row should one toward Russia that loss to me still hurts more than any loss we've ever had we lost a little bit of focus a little bit of commitment and I think by losing that NFC champion game gave us a chance to get back refocused even in the loss that year in 94 an NFC Championship the leadership really stepped up that following year the five got offseason going to the next year because we still believed that we had at least one more in us SMU did your when we're gonna do it our way now and that was because you know I've stepped in there and came late and now he's gonna have a full year of being able to look at the players and if I be a part of it making the constructivist calls Randy I'm liable beat the hell out of a coach every day out in the field if I don't impress you I will snatch lace before the damn throat thrown on the floor here if it make you happy I'm me when I got to be mean I'm a mean sob you know what I mean but I do with the smile it's not weakness I mean I do it with a smile I have fun with it but don't think and it won't fire yawns it's just part of what the hell comes out your damn mouth and sometimes you say it feeling believe it you know they take seven love with it will tell you guys doing here I don't think so at all no I don't think so we have one that didn't do I he put me to the test and sets one test you will um he thought that test $10,000 worth anybody been to ten thousand for me the mission to meeting their mister owner ever since I mean we will score back I'm not that I can recall I was told that they hadn't been I got a record there didn't I'm a tough son [ __ ] honey I'm so damn disappoint we didn't win last year hey hey it hurts me but I'm gonna Ted I don't dwell on I don't dwell on life's too short let's go on down the road let's do it again this year they come when you least expect them sometimes I won four national championships and they come when you least expect them you prepare for it every year you try to do it and accomplish it every year and sometimes when you think you're gonna do it it doesn't happen and when you don't think you're gonna do it sometimes it does happen it's happen that way before me so you prepare each one of them going down the road try to make it happen the pressure on the Cowboys on Barry Switzer on Jerry Jones was as high as it can be after not winning the Super Bowl or getting to the Super Bowl in the 1994 season it was all on Jerry so now it's like well we gotta win this that we got to get back so the pressure was really on heading into that season that they had to be successful there have been meaningful in my opinion talks and there's been money talk with the Cowboys and Dion's representative what had been going on is Jerry was bucking the NFL he felt like the individual teams should be able to do their own marketing deals I'm not sure everybody knew what was getting ready to happen and when you're getting ready to poke the bear there's no better opportunity than on Monday Night Football Cowboys Giants [Applause] let's walk to the left and Emmitt Smith first [Applause] [Music] again Aikman buyers club by Michael living at the fire the Cowboys leading the Giants 21 to nothing this is over Texas Stadium of course has the opening that gives it its identity really but my thoughts are to have that field and have all of our training center closer to the stadium this is the parking lot now right missus yes yes we have about a hundred and fifty acres so we've got these caps that we're gonna exchange you I hope they'll put this cap on it doesn't mess up my hair yeah at the risk of missing okay here we go that's good [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Geri seeking number 20 on the return to crime exposure has picked this time to announce that he and Nike are joining forces announcing a seven-year exclusive sponsorship agreement between Nike and Texas Stadium he along with Phil Knight who is the CEO of Nike a mysterious and somewhat reclusive man and that's Phil Knight in a cowboy hat some think he is the most powerful man in sports running the Nike Empire and the two have a linked up in a deal exclusive to the Cowboys it will send shockwaves throughout the National Football League right now Nike does not have a licensing agreement with the National Football League so again Jerry is kind of going outside the family no I knew Jerry was doing different things because people in pro football NFL marketing and talk to me about trying to help influence I said me influence Jerry Jerry is gonna do what the hell he wants to do I have no influence on Jerry you know neither y'all do something people do the opposite you gonna find the other competitor who you brought they go kick your ass with Nike represents so many athletes they have so many athletes tied into endorsement contract the question I think that a lot of people are going to ask are those athletes going to be funneled towards the Dallas Cowboys I'm one of those athletes one Deion Sanders and Smith looks like he may have gotten his foot stepped on well maybe has a cramp if Kevin Smith is out for any length of time how much more important would that make the signing of one Deion Sanders to the Dallas Cowboys I think you already know the answer to that question we said no on Deion in 94 well next thing we know Smith is gone then he play the season he's out and going we didn't make mistaken next year we will get the [Music] you get media [Applause] dang if I had eleven men like that I could rule the world Jones was determined when Dion became free he was determined to get that corner back and deal was that guy that can come in you could do more things because he literally commanded one half and feel [Applause] the word for a touch you're not returned [Applause] NASA's intercepted they're not down the sideline he on Deion Sanders told us yesterday that for every touchdown he gets he will give the blocking people three choices a Gucci watch a bunch of money or a gold chain do you know what he can afford it Deion Sanders first of all this in my view this entire process has been a very competitive one but having said that Stephen Jones got on my plane yesterday about seven o'clock flew to Chicago and Deion Sanders signed the contract and he's now a Dallas Cowboy you know when they brought him in we welcomed with open arms man it was about winning it wasn't about we was about winning winning was first and everything else fell upon today Deon came in he brought the whole primetime with him here like an entourage of guys and this and that we wasn't used to seeing that [Applause] [Music] no doubt and I think anybody on the team will tell you except Dion that he was not you know a team guy he just did what he wanted to do that's no secret I've never had any problems with teammates it may be like that since I've gone to another team but it wasn't like that while I was in San Francisco I feel like these guys are professionals you know first thing he did was invited all the guys to his house the deepness of Beck's talked about how we needed to work together you know get on one a page and we did and I think it was very good that he did that because it made a lot easier for all of us to get together and work hard as one unit we don't know we'll talk about that Monday I I've already told her knee will sit down and visit about that but Ernie knows that he wants to play offense and Ernie like to coach him on the offensive we played some games he played on her snaps you know ya could play offense defense I think he was told when he was in San Francisco he want to play some offense out there but Jerry Rice said but in contract there I couldn't play offense I handle my business out there on the field and I handled it well and I'm gonna continue to handle it well so don't question my dedication to a sport or what I mean to my teammates I don't like to be questioned on that behalf it played no role and what we're doing here was Dion Dion that was with Nike when he was with Atlanta he's what Nike because he's the only legitimate - sports star there is in sports today some day one of these people some bit some people are gonna learn that I'm not in this thing for money I didn't buy the Dallas Cowboys to make money I'm here to win I'm here to go to Super Bowls and I'll tell you right now I know when you go get Deion Sanders you're making at least a step toward a Super Bowl I think the circuit is really hitting 95 and I think then you get to what happened when the 49ers who they had still thought they were better than when the 49ers come in to Texas Stadium and the 49ers just kicked the dog out of them so that I think everybody's copters went whoo December rolled around I called it the December from hell because it was just one nightmare after another and the pressure was mounting the stretches gonna be hard it's a grind and but I remember you know when you've won two Super Bowls and you made it to a championship game every week was someone Super Bowl justise all intensity and if fourth-quarter is being lifted by both team these fans are into it now I mean the whole thing is going on here there's some stuff going on 17:17 i-24 [Applause] 20 division titles all three of their game they get home field ground let Sara [Applause] for a new situation unless they're gonna climb for I think they could not go for it Emmitt Smith city back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that polecat one name is the two-minute warning Switzer's saying the two-minute warning very Swift ought to be saying that you shouldn't call that play oh now boys offensive units still on the field maybe there [Applause] the cockroach I think there was a bad fall the first time the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we went in that locker room unfortunate for me I've always been the guy that can take you know choices looking at us with disgust I can't feel things slipping away never stop but he was calling us fat dis dis daddy I doubt our biggest offensive line and leave y'all can't even get sixes you can't even get it left and I'm like without what coach a call I try to execute I don't second-guess coaches know when I get out of this game and I've become a coach then you can accent other player but I learned a long time ago you don't second-guess your coaches you believe in what they trying to do because when you go to second-guessing then you know put out an all-out effort well he called old left the first time I gave a great effort he called Louis left the second time I tried to give it even great effort because when you doubt you hesitate coach's job out of Carter place and he thought would work and bleeding to be honest with you that was our bread and butter and I make you go away i'ma go a step further at two years before that coach Switzer got there they we used to call no right no wrong left equally to one day I stood up in the arm short yardage meeting I said him say hey we run low left first in always so when I when I stood up said that's it because we don't we 99.9% on lower left so we need to run low left and the coach said what me I said yeah we run lower left so I kind of asked for that a frigid day in Philly seized Alice's grip on home-field advantage disappear into thin air can the boys still get to the promised land the coach's thoughts next on the Barry Switzer show Cowboys ten and four after the loss to the Eagles last weekend we will talk about that game a detail in just a few minutes you're seeing there the fourth and one called the decision to go for it from the 29 yard line didn't get it of course game-winning field goal he went in for goals we felt like it's the 90% least chance of making it and we didn't make it so that's a consequence of and Bose over the clown Bose over the coach and I have to live with that so I'm type of guy can handle it he took responsibility for the losses he took responsibility for the top line and football and the best running back he took it given the aftermath of this thing is there any part of you at any time that says hey I don't need this I could have stayed on the couch in Norman and right now that couch is looking pretty good I like it too and you think that this criticism or what people can write can affect how I feel about this no not at all that's profile you lose someone something that you think you should win but that's why everybody beat everybody like man how the games played what happens in that 60 minutes you're playing it was 13 possession 1213 possessions got them all what do you do with it here's Barry Switzer he comes into a role this wasn't all his fault I think the problem was and what Jimmy was really good was when to put his finger on us he had the pulse of this football team and he had a lotta alpha dogs and he knew how to control the Michael Irvin's the Emmitt Smith the Charles Haley's he knew how to control the football team and I think it was unfair for Barry Switzer to come in and then expect him to have the pulse of this football team it's just this just not fair I don't care if you bring him Bill Walsh back in these aren't his guys and it was it was an uphill battle for Barry from day one I think his philosophy forced us to grow up as men because we were so used to Jimmy being a taskmaster that flexibility and and now all that stuff was was going with Jimmy but flexibility and and and the ability to to be a veteran was that wide open with Barry and unfortunately I think sometimes people take advantage of those things tired of being a guy who's got to run down everybody's throat all the time [Applause] [Music] I remember Joe Brodsky our running backs coach pulled me aside at practice one day late in December and he said if we screw around and win this thing this year he said it'll be one of the greatest stories ever told because I don't know how in the hell it's gonna happen I would say any player on that team would tell you that we were in trouble there were a lot of distractions that year mr. prime time beyond Sanders there we don't try now the cowboy fans weren't going to take two years of well we have this excuse we have that excuse and we know you still have Troy Emmett Michael Novacek Hayley all those guys we don't want to hear about that and then there was so much turmoil and just ridiculously crazy things happening in the month of December that it it just didn't seem like it was it was gonna happen San Francisco lose his last game of the regular season that put the Cowboys home field but then the San Francisco loses to Green Bay the first round with the playoffs Cowboys walked in walk right into the Super Bowl it's gonna work let's let's go win enough Dallas Cowboys date with destiny from Tempe Arizona the Cowboys are in the Super Bowl for the third time in four years I talked with Jerry Jones earlier in the week and asked him if this Super Bowl business has become a routine no it's been exciting and I think Mike especially since we had our funeral service read to us in December we saw the epitaph we heard the service and we know what it would have been like not to come to the Super Bowl and the criticism we would have gotten everybody feels the same way we got to go back wake up and here we are at the Super Bowl this is every bit as exciting to me as the first Super Bowl that we attended it's an exciting week it's a rewarding week but now it's time to get down to business we have to win the football game to make it complete one guy who still doesn't have a lot of experience in this league is Barry Switzer and Oh Mickey you had a chance to talk with the coach during this past week will you look at this season as a success or do you think in your mind you have to win the Super Bowl to make it a success when I came I entered under the most difficult right area any coach ever entered it was it the only way I would even have a chance by some to be measured as a success it was I had to win the Super Bowl understandably so we've been favored never ball game we played 24 foot park games and we've been favored what every one of them we're favored this time and I know that this we have the ability and talent we play good protect the ball keep everything to minimum and don't turn over we're the best team will win upon me [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] you know when your own business Weiner to win this football game we're not here down you're not worried about all the festivities but we know we got to do I think we had good with the practice so far I guess so far we've been you know pretty relaxed you know immediate effect you know taking our minds off of things these are these are mouth waters this is where they great Neil O'Donnell has to have a hot in if he has a hot hand we have a great game on her hand so I just think the Cowboys Super Bowls you have most playmakers you win and Cowboys have the most playmaker so I think they'll win come out dancing two teams over you know this is the old group right here go over 30 come on right over 30 group right here [Laughter] I'm dreaming about picking the ball off and pulling out a dance I got 4d on I can't last a surprise you see Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe Arizona Bay and the excitement and the setting is the perfect it's absolutely perfectly Super Bowl 30 between the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers and it's a glorious day [Music] [Applause] the Deion Sanders caught at the 20 in primetime makes a 47-yard prime Ted of a Troy Aikman bomb [Music] [Music] it maybe should call me Edward Scissorhands because I dropped so many balls my rookie year and my career became to be one time I said hey look do you not to receive her nobody ever said you had to use your hands just catch the ball so I said okay Mike [Applause] 43-yard right to Larry Brown in the flat roof top by the Cowboys the repair of a score it is a run back up 32 yards in Larry Brown appears to be in a position to set up up again [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Smith scores the Cowboys are celebrating this one O'Donnell will just wing as the game in the Dallas Cowboys and celebrate being the team of the night [Music] you told us in our pregame show that what other people thought of you whether you won or lost is immaterial now that you have won this game do you still feel that way don't feel that way the only things that count is your family my personal family and this family right here that's the ones that stuck with me when times are tough these are the people I want to be with Dallas Cowboys I wanted I want to say to Jerry Jones something's very important he said to me all year are you having a good time now Jerry we did it our way that was that's well the only jury and I knew what that meant you know no one ever might like the hell y'all talking about we did it our way baby we you know what we did it our way I would that it was Jerry been part of it you know what I mean that moment was for everybody you know certainty Barry Troy trying to keep everybody together stay focused coach Johnson leave it that moment there kind of symbolized our here the mental toughness to overcome all the different challenges that we had to allow two years [Applause] the Dallas Cowboys [Applause] [Music] it's a great pleasure and honor for me to welcome Jerry Jones and his family and coaches the staff welcome back to the White House this is a beginning to be boring for them I think this year I thought was especially important for the team and Jerry Jones said so after the victory over Pittsburgh fact that there were two losses in December and I have to say to my longtime friend and fellow Arkansas Barry Switzer he was second-guessed so much for a while I thought people had mistaken him for the president this was a good year for the Dallas Cowboys but because of the way they won in the way they played and the obstacles they overcame was a good year for professional football and for reminding us all you have to have the courage to accept adversity and overcome it when you face it and you have to keep going when the going gets tough and every one of us in America can cheer them for that great accomplishments congratulations we're glad to have you at the White House [Music] mr. president every since Bill Clinton got elected president the United States the Dallas Cowboys have been winning Super Bowl the facts are that this year this team would not dwell on the negatives it dwelled on the positives and there were negatives they were brought up to us daily we knew some of them not to be there but we knew some of them to be real I want to thank you here in the White House before the president United States for staying positive it's a lesson to everyone of us Barry Switzer a coach that believes in coaching the positive way and reinforcing the positive aspect of it and Barry I want to thank you for what you did for this football team and and the inspiration that you really should be we put a lot of people that bothers to it Thank You mr. president Jerry Jones guests here today thank you for being here I want to thank the president for inviting us to the White House to honor our team this year but more importantly I really want to say to our coaching staff and I want to stand because I want the people to know and outstanding coaching staff that if coached three Super Bowl teams and won the championship today is really special for me it really is because in life's journey today this moment in time it's really special for me to know that I'm an old country boy from Arkansas with a hundred mile radius of hope for dice crossing Rose City that for country boys had an opportunity to stand before you today in honor the 1995 world champion Dallas Cowboys thank you [Applause] we're gonna play off three consecutive years should've won at the first year we went to second year at the Super Bowl in the third year we go out to Carolina and we'd probably win bulky but you know what happens I lose Deion Sanders I lose Michael Irvin now think about on offense and defense who you might want to lose other than quarterback you know I mean we're gonna be playing Green Bay the next game for the championship and on the super welcome again and people forget about we came that close again in the third year there rather we just got old now people can sit up and try to act like you know we had like 900 most Super Bowls in us I would tell anybody if I play I say three games more a year and over a four or five year period how many seasons have I played I played a whole season I'm in playoff mode I'm giving my body beat up we just got old man I think most of the players from that 95 team they'd be lying if they didn't say they were shocked they won that suit we knew we knew we won that game we were in that locker room probably more excited in any super previous Super Bowls because we knew like we look around like man I may not make the next you know we look at each other like wow the arrow was pointing down I lost the best tight in in the league Jay Novacek and I lost my pastor of Charles Haley things started happening and free agencies and some of those guys are you start losing core guys with in the locker room you're not going to be the same football team and I think that's what we overlooked I thought you know this team started looking at okay I have my five stars for the offense and defense and we can win games with that that's just it's not how teams are made up I decided you know I get out here and go back and I made your decision I told Jerry said they and patient leave here I'll let you know when my bags he didn't want me to Jerry and I had a great relationship Steven and Nigeria Larry that's one thing I miss about the Cowboys is that the relationship I had with all those guys it was a fun time Jorah come on pointing them together we've had several conversations this week and if your person of sports everybody in this room is I have must say that I've enjoyed my last several hours with beer Jerry had said he should have not fired he should have retired after they wonder said I think that would have made the most sense it would have been a good thing we probably wouldn't be having this conversation 25 years later the same kind of conversation if Jerry had done that I think in many ways Barry couldn't win no let me say this I think his legacy is is somewhat complicated because people have different views on it they will always have different opinions Jimmy will always be remembered as the guy who helped the Cowboys you know come back win those Super Bowls Barry will always be by some remembered as the guy who won with Jimmy's players manage this team through an awkward transition and managed to have some success and probably stayed on the job too long when I say I was too hard on there Berry was here because he was invited to be here this was not very Switzer's fault that he came into this role and and took over and we didn't win it in the net and at 94 season this that wasn't all his fault he didn't have to come down here and take this job he didn't have to come down here and take all this crap but here he comes back Jerry put a lot on the line when he brought him in and Jerry once said the Commissioner asked actually asked him to talk on a panel about you know what you go through when you're hiring a head coach he said you know Jerry you've hired - head coach it'd have won Super Bowls and Jerry said I don't know that I'm the guy you want on that panel because I'm running out of college friends to hire as head coach and I'm not an expert at that I've just been fortunate to know some guys who are pretty pretty damn good I think what Barry was really good at was establishing relationships and letting people see that he genuinely was a good guy I love me some coach listen you know he won a few guys I know if he called today saying that I need you I'm going it was somebody he wanted to see have success because he really has a good heart he cares about people he cares about your family who cares about your kids he likes to have a good time he doesn't take himself too seriously he had one crack at getting a Super Bowl ring in his hand four years with the Dallas Cowboys and he did it and he did it for his family and I'm happy for him that he was able to get it done very Switzer was the right coach at the right time that team was so good there's a lot of different coaches that may have won a Super Bowl with it but I don't know if I could say their name would I don't know with a younger Bill Parcells could have come in but it would be hard to name a guy who could follow Jimmy and keep it going because his style and his hammerlock that he had on the team which was so different very unique situation some of the best things in life happened when you least expect them to happen and that's what happened in this case the right place the right time and as long as they're there good young men hey guys that liked the same things I like and we're willing to go bust her butt every day to make good things happen hey that's kind of illegal don't want to be around because I'm like I'm that way I'm wired up that works very good guys respected know people always understand or believe it as methods here there but he's a good person and I think you know for the most part people like to see good people win Sports Illustrated came to us and said we want to dedicate an entire issue to a week in the life of the Dallas Cowboys covered us from Sunday to Sunday and and the game ended that week it was a game in Philadelphia that we'd won and my my lasting image of Barry when I think it buries the head coach is they have in the head coach's office dressing-room after that game Barry's got a dress shirt on and his tie and he's in his boxer shorts and he's just happy we won believe that we won let's go get on the bus and have a good time on the plane right [Music]
