[Music] hi guys this is mary with blue fern travel today we're talking about martin luther king jr now when most people think of martin luther king jr and the time he spent in dc they think about the mlk memorial feature behind me and the lincoln memorial where he gave his famous i have a dream speech finished in 2011 the memorial has words for many famous speeches including this one from his i have a dream speech out of a mountain of despair comes a stone of hope we've all seen the famous photos of martin luther king jr standing on these stairs delivering his iconic words to hundreds of thousands of protesters taking these stairs yourself and walking by the reflecting pool is a great way to reflect on martin luther king jr's legacy but if you really want to understand his time in dc you have to head up to u street at the time u street was known as black broadway filled with successful african american musicians artists and intellectuals mlk frequented ben's chili bowl went in dc and even worked in the back dining room while planning his march for jobs and freedom where he gave his i have a dream speech the chili bowl was one of the centers of the civil rights movement in the district one of martin luther king jr's favorite restaurants in the city was the florida avenue grill which is known today as the oldest black owned restaurant and the longest running soul food restaurant in the country martin luther king addressed 4 000 people here at cardoza high school in 1967 his topic was poverty a growing focus of the southern christian leadership conference in 1968 they launched the poor people's campaign which was also the same year martin luther king was assassinated mlk's legacy is as important now as it ever was taking some time to understand the man behind it can inspire us all to do what we can to make our world a better place if you want to learn more about the history and culture of this great city visit our website or sign up for our mailing list at blueferntravel.com
