good morning everybody and welcome to the day in the life of an apprentice electrician brought to you by undertools tv my name is ben uh i've been doing my apprenticeship for two years now today what we're doing is fixing a house and it's not a typical everyday thing to be second fixing or things like that there's other aspects of work to be carried out like for example in housing new bui first things first the role of many apprentices in the beginning stages of their career is to go and grab the gear out of the stars so let's go ahead and do that so basically what i'm doing here is placing all the sockets and switches at the areas where you're going to go and my plan is to bang out all the sockets and other switches before lunch break today and then work on the ceilings after break here is a before of the kitchen countertop and here is the after i'll explain briefly what everything's doing so this appliances switch is controlling the dishwasher and also the extractor fan a couple of sockets a cooker switch which controls this cable once this is connected to a cooker and a hob then you'll be able to control it for that switch another socket and then we also have a switch that controls a single socket that the fridge will be pulled into it's 11 o'clock now so that means it's time for lunch right so seeing as it's lunch time i thought i'd take a minute to sit down and answer a couple of questions that i get asked pretty frequently in regards to being an apprentice getting an apprenticeship etc one of the most common questions i get asked is whether or not you need to go to a trade school before applying for an apprenticeship and the answer to that is no as far as i know for the majority of trades you learn while you work so initially when you begin working with a company you might go through an initial uh trial phase but if you're successful during that and they can tell that you're willing to work and you're willing to put the effort in and learn then they'll sign you up officially to whatever the apprenticeship program is where you're from another common question i get asked pretty frequently is how do you acquire an apprenticeship how do you begin first of all if you're completely green to working in construction whatsoever i'd tell you to go and get your safe pass and all the things that are required to go ahead and let you work on a site because it'll be difficult to you know apply for somewhere or call someone up and ask them to give you a trial if you can't just start right away but yeah there's companies looking for new lads all the time i'm sure if you search on google apprentice jobs near you there'll be you know plenty of ads there where you can apply to work for these companies if you're unsuccessful doing that all right in ireland if you go to safe electric.e they're the people that register qualified electricians to work legally and you stick in your county and your city it'll give you a list of all the electricians in your local area and pretty much what i do is phone these fellas up and just ask them are they willing to take you on on a trial but before saying that that's a straight up asks on them are they looking for apprentices because it's handy for them if you can just stare immediately then eventually you know if they think you're a suitable fit for them they'll register you for the apprenticeship program and if you're not from orland i just do some research into what the atari is that registers the electricians where you where you're from and do the same thing another couple of things that i'll mention in regards to an apprenticeship that you might be wondering all right the pay in the first one or two years it's not outstanding for my first and second year i was earning 250 euro a week uh it's just the going rate for first year apprentices as soon as 12 months passes or you come back from your first phase of college that rate will go up um and it'll keep increasing slightly and then as you become more experienced or you're coming more towards the end of your apprenticeship your wages will be an adequate rate now another thing you might be wondering is is an apprenticeship even worth it all right i'll put it to you this way i've had about six or seven different jobs i've quit all them didn't like any of them i've been to college dropped out an apprenticeship albeit it can be pretty tough uh but for me in particular doing an electrical apprenticeship it's a very promising career yeah i enjoy it as well too you know the attitude of working on sites the variety of work involved as well i think it's very much worth doing and if you're considering doing an apprenticeship you know whatever trade it is i'd recommend you go ahead and do it right so i'm gonna return to work now and power through the rest of the day trying to just crawl in under the stairs here just installing a socket under the stairs here in case you want to plug your george foreign and you know yourself it's an adequate place to have a ham and cheese toastie we're approaching that sacred time the time where you're about to go home so what i'm going to do is i'm going to sweep up the absolute mess i've made so at this point i'm just going to pack my things up lock up our storage container and head home without though the best part of the day getting home after a long day's graft and chillaxing crap i didn't even change my clothes oh thank god my mother would have slaughtered me but yeah the field of work involved with being an electrician or an apprentice electrician it varies quite a lot i've not even really mentioned the industrial side of things and i'm sure there's other lines of work that involves being an electrician that i'm not even aware of but i hope the video that i've made for you today has been valuable insight for you if you're considering becoming an electrician or you're wondering what it's like being an apprentice so yeah that's all from me thanks very much to on the tools for giving me the fantastic opportunity to make this video for them i had a lot of fun so i'll see you later on
