Day In The Life of a Peace Corps Volunteer Sierra Leone

thanks Paula [Music] good morning my name is Bailey and I'm a Peace Corps volunteer currently serving in Sierra Leone I work here as a teacher today I thought I would take you along on a day in the life of a Peace Corps volunteer I am currently sitting on my Brenda and she got my coffee I'm gonna go inside do something with my hair brush my teeth and get ready to go to school so I hope you enjoyed my world like good morning get ready montage that I tried to create let me tell you it is very difficult to take video when you have no electricity and it's dark inside your house so I will see you all when I get to school for a morning assembly whoo look at this bunch of bananas my banana tree fell down three days ago and so Monday I'm gonna have so many bananas to eat just waiting for them to get ripe so one more thing before I leave for school is I take my you something ticket Brown - um I think my doctor medication first thing in the morning it helps prevent against malaria so it's probably the most important thing I do every single day so I've just arrived at school I'm currently waiting for the bell three the mom morning assembly which I'm morning assembly we do morning prayers I'm the national anthem of the National pledge some days and then I need you Singlish word of the day and then the kids will go to class welcome to my school so this is the senior secondary school which I teach at that is our library over there and then over here on the other side of this building is our junior secondary school [Applause] so as you can see it's hung of students came by the end of assembly so morning assembly starts at 8 o'clock and ends at 8:40 so I just finished a chemistry for my SS 3 students that's like one little video I asked them to think about what they want to America about living in Sierra Leone so I teach them a little bit later today so I'm going to do a little interview with them see what I want to say I'm excited to hear but I taught two periods so each period here is 40 minutes and now we have what we call dinner see interruption so this is an exercise and each I get changes and see there a debate or some kind of presentation so we talk about religion last week we did a drug addiction so I'm not quite sure what today's topic I will let you get a look into what it looks like so my counterpart and I are gonna go to primary school in my community we're going to do a flashcard project so I make flashcards of the alphabet numbers one through twenty two letter words and three letter words with pictures and then we give them through the nursery school and we help like teach the teachers how to use them in the classroom and then just give them another resource so we're gonna walk there quick and do that during literacy and devotion so while I'm walking around on my way back I'm going to greet some of my friends in my community and then also attend the wimba so a limo comes to my community once a week and it is our mark day otherwise to buy food or anything you need to go three miles away to the nearest town so luma is like the best day ever and I'll probably go buy some fish and what I felt so I feel like buying today so use Nami potty yeah nummy village buddy hey yes this woman they plan to be fine did they do the braids thank you Oh so this is my student who did not go to school today just not me favorite ng to write this run so I'm gonna go get some lunch we have a little few auntie's which auntie's are just any woman in country you can call them an auntie that's a lunch outside my school I'm gonna go buy something to eat because pretty hungry and it's lunchtime so I just bought myself lunch these are macaroni and bread sandwiches they have a little bit of a spice to them but they are delicious and I almost every day for lunch it cost me which is great so never a second risk I want help from the United States of America to assist us problem my name is Vince really owner John Paul led streets I mean you never am I am a student of Miss Pipps in the unabomber secondary school our main suffering yeah a slag we don't have enough learning materials and the equipment in our laboratory is not available so I need your maximum and completion to solve this problem for us thank you but the students have now come to join us I like living inside Salone it's hot but I get to hang out with all these awesome students every day and they try very hard for me we are learning physics and chemistry yeah yes vex teacher good afternoon guys my name is Francis dear grammar and Acestes and stage thank you guys we have been Sun and what's up in is really oh well thank God as we are free education but it's fair for me design students relaxed and teachers and most of them were students after taking the bus to come back and have some teachers every nonsense tablet but please go for your domain citizen to stop see any notes as well job thank you guys I did today I was excited about me doing a video as my assess a student so I'm done teaching for the day rip my hand I wrote so much on the board okay also it's a 105 degrees it's fine was a hospital mess so I apologize for me like everything about all day but what can we do when you don't have air conditioning I'm going to relax and just hang out at the school and maybe do a little bit of grading and then I'm going to go to the college to teach my college class and then I'll be going good day so this is my SSP classroom so as you can see it's just like a hodgepodge of desks and then my only resource is the chalkboard and rip my hand for having to write all of that give you a little quick tour I don't want to say the college name that really gives it away where my site is and I don't want people to know exactly where I am located as well so I just got to the college and this is my absolute favorite part is that you can come on the building or on the rooftop and just take a nice little gander but all of Salone so my village is somewhere way off like five miles into the bush that way but it's pretty big campus I'm on top of life in the main building and I'm gonna teach in like 30 minutes oh I just got back from teaching at the college I teach I'm 46 it's currently 624 right now and the Canadian College normally picks me up but they called me like 3:15 and we're like we don't have a car for you all the cars are gone so I had to figure out how to get there which took a little bit I'm experienced alone like I don't on the car so that had to go to my junction and then get a bike together 91 and then wait for carts are filled so then go to the college because it's like five miles - for my site so my hair is well held now from wearing my helmet but I am going to go get my dinner also can we talk about how many computers and phones we had plugged in like I do not understand how we don't blow these every single class so this is a little basket absol cap every night I mean here is always rice so rice is a staple food and Salone and I eat rice every single day and inside here it's really called palasa Zoar sauce so this is cassava leaf it's really good and honestly super super spicy I'll show you what it looks like when it's all on my plate and now we eat so I'm gonna like mix her up some people eat it like this but I like when it's all mixed together I think it's better I have a bottle of water that I will probably finish because it was a hundred and five degrees today I don't know if I said that but it was hot and I was sweating like crazy also to prove I'm not a bad cat parent my cat loves glosses when to throw sauce and rice so she's kind of funny but yeah she loves to eat her rice and glasses this is my cat her name is Paula she's amazing this morning she killed that cockroach but she catches on my mice and all the lizards that get inside my house as well as spiders too play club finished water bottle now Rose did I come for greets me I did sit down so how did you catch them you run after and you just able to grab them all of you yes Bob I impressed I've been home for almost two hours now I it's getting dark at 7:51 so I've come inside I'm going to watch probably a few episodes maybe like an hour and then they take a bucket bath and I'll show you what a bucket bath look like - GUI we forgot to mention this for one of my students at the college got me this I love Stallone hat I think it's hilarious I will definitely be wearing this I've no idea where he got it but he was like Miss Papes I saw this I thought of you I had to get it for you so I got a hat today I'm curling my bathroom and I'm about to take my bucket back so to take a bucket bath you get a nice big bucket of water you then take something to scoop the water and pour it on your body and then
