[Music] as soon as i get out of bed in the morning i like to open my curtains and see what sort of day lies ahead of me on this particular spring morning it was a beautiful and sunny day and the little baby birds were chirping in the trees outside my window [Music] every morning i open up the curtains in the living room letting the sun shine in to brighten up the house i then make my way outside to the chicken's pen to let them out say good morning and give them their breakfast [Music] and what a beautiful day it was outside mord usually lays the first egg in the morning and mabel lays hers later on it really just is so wonderful to have fresh eggs from our happy little hens each day after taking care of the chickens i then go to the bathroom to freshen up before making breakfast i like to spritz my face with witch hazel and moisturize with oily's pink beauty fluid which i've spoken of many times before as it was something my great grandmother used in the 1950s now off to the kitchen to make breakfast for james and i tea was more popular than coffee in australia in the 1950s and i love a good cup of tea but this morning i'm opting for a lovely fragrant cup of coffee breakfast today is going to be fancier than a usual weekday brekkie consisting of toast or cereal i am going to make a classic cooked breakfast which is quite common here in australia and it can involve many different aspects like heinz baked beans cooked tomato mushrooms bacon and fried eggs [Music] a cooked breakfast is one of my favorite meals it's just so delicious and satisfying and sets your day up right a great time saving tip i learnt from my 1950s housewife week was to set the dining table the night before it just makes the whole breakfast process so much easier and breakfast is served [Music] after our delicious brekkie i cleaned up the dishes and then decided to put on a load of washing since the weather was so marvelously sunny i don't have an authentic 1950s ringer washer to clean my clothes so a regular washing machine will have to do the trick and by golly it does make my work a lot easier before i get dressed for the day i like to make the bed today's outfit was a simple and practical one for staying at home and pottering around the house and of course putting on some makeup a little bit of eyebrow pencil a neutral eyeshadow some cream rouge and of course a bright pinkish red lipstick synonymous with the 1950s and now for the hair i usually sleep in foam rollers in pink house and wrap my hair in a turban to protect it overnight for this roller set i chose to roll my hair only halfway to give the final results a bit of a looser and softer wave i always use my favorite vintage bristle brush as it gives my hair a bit of volume and results in the best looking brush [Music] now that we've had breakfast i've cleaned up i'm all ready for the day i think i'm gonna go outside and do some gardening and hang out with the chickens for a little bit [Music] [Applause] i've planted some little seedlings here and they've been going for a while these are baby blue eyes i've got some basil here some rosemary and beetroot and then i've planted a whole bunch of flowers in here but i've had to net it all the way around because the chickens apparently love flowers they just keep eating them naughty things [Music] i'm so happy with how far my little victory garden has grown i planted this in my 1940s housewife video i i didn't go and buy these plants already grown the lettuce have been grown from seed and i also have some spring onions and i even planted a sprouted onion that i had inside we've been feeding the chicken some mixed grains and i didn't realize that one of them was peas and they actually started sprouting in the chicken's pen and i actually went through and dug all of these little peas up and i've planted them in the garden and one of them has just taken off like you wouldn't believe hi moored curious curious what's going on here it's just really exciting growing things from seed and i've really enjoyed getting into doing some gardening um pretty much since that 1940s video and it's lovely getting out in the sun and feeling a sense of satisfaction and being proud of the things that you can grow in the garden especially when you grow up from seed it's been really fun [Music] [Music] we are so lucky to have a big backyard and are slowly adding flowers and vegetables to grow our little garden having a beautiful garden full of flowers reminds me of my gorgeous great grandma who lived in tasmania all she had was a tiny courtyard and a tiny little house but she made the most of the space she had and grew so many things but most of all i remember how beautiful the roses were after a gorgeous morning outside i headed into the house to make some lunch for james and i i'm making james a salad sandwich with salami and pesto i've only just recently come up with this combination of the pesto and salami and apparently james says it's one of the nicest sandwiches he's ever had [Music] and bon appetit lunch is served after lunch was done i got straight into doing some much-needed household cleaning i vacuumed the living room the kitchen and then the rest of the house as it had been neglected whilst i was busy with my nursing studies at university i hope to someday get my hands on a gorgeous old vacuum cleaner from the 1950s or 60s as the design is so much cooler than modern vacuum sold today [Music] after whizzing around the house the vacuuming was done and i could then move on to mopping a great little tip james's grandma has with mopping is adding some vinegar into the hot water as it helps to naturally disinfect the floors without leaving a chemical residue [Music] i had a brief look over the 1950s housewife daily routine which i also used in my 50s housewife video and could see that i needed to clean my mirrors so i went ahead and cleaned the mirrors in the bedroom and the bathroom [Music] i had a pile of clean washing sitting on the bed from the day before so i folded everything neatly and put it all away so after a productive afternoon of cleaning i had a nice cold glass of orange juice and picked out a pretty two-piece outfit for the evening [Music] i touched up my makeup making sure to part on my face then i swept my curls into an updo and added a hair net for extra security and of course reapplying my lovely red lipstick then i headed out into the backyard again to take in the freshly dried towels there is nothing better than the smell of freshly washed towels and linen before i started on dinner for the evening james and i decided to take a romantic walk in the park [Music] do [Music] do [Music] after our lovely evening stroll we came back home and i started preparing some dessert before starting on dinner i chopped up some apple white nectarine and mango which has only just become available now as the mango season is starting [Music] that mango is delicious i have not had fresh mango in so long and this is just divine it's so juicy dinner for tonight is steamed green beans mashed potato and buttered steak i topped and tailed the beans and what better way to spend time in the kitchen than to put on a 50s record and have a little groove i used a double pot to boil the potatoes below and steam the green beans above in a steaming basket while the vegetables were cooking i set the table for dinner [Music] [Music] [Music] and there you have it a delicious dinner served with gravy and to accompany the meal james made a gin and tonic [Music] after a lovely meal together chatting and enjoying our food i then cleaned up the dishes i also picked up another great tip from my 1950s housewife week which involves pouring boiling water down the sink to keep the pipes clean [Music] i also wiped down the countertops and served our dessert but before sitting down and relaxing for the evening i went outside and put the chickens to bed they walk up their ramp and put themselves to bed when it gets dark i just put the door on the house to make sure they stay safe all night [Music] we ended the night with watching a game show from 1956 called what's my line which was actually pretty funny as jerry lewis a comedian featured in this episode somehow he's as much of a mystery as our mystery panelist so i can't introduce him want me to help you sure after a busy day in the garden and spring cleaning the house i was very much looking forward to a bubble bath [Music] while the bath filled up i got at my ponds cold cream and removed all my makeup there is something so refreshing about applying the cool cream onto your face after a long day and then wiping it all off with a warm washcloth [Music] after having a relaxing bath i put on my favorite 1950s pen was set and spritzed my face with witch hazel and applied my favorite pink moisturizer [Music] i hopped into bed and finished off the night by reading my grandpa's memoirs that he had written because of my dad's express wish that he write down his life story i am beyond grateful that i am able to read and learn about my family's history and what it was like to live during the 20th century thank you all so much for watching and i'll see you next week bye [Music] [Music] you
