welcome back to upgrade your career day four i'm madeline mann so glad to have you here where are you coming from put your city in the chat frederick from houston love to hear it fernando's from long beach hello fernando oh so good to be back day four of the five day master class okay i'm seeing michelle tony janet monica from san luis obispo lena from san diego stefan from fort collins very cool amanda from brooklyn welcome back ah day four okay so but mala says ready for day four yes uh so good love the enthusiasm so that's absolutely it we are here for day four for upgrade your career and today is all about really focusing on the interview and how to radiate competence and confidence in the interview now one of the things that i teased yesterday is that if you are approaching the job interview in a way where you are seeing it as okay the way i'm going to do really well in the interview is by just answering these questions to the best of my ability we are missing a huge chunk of strategy that you need to be taking into consideration if you are simply answering the questions that they are giving you then you are going to often not land the job and i'm going to tell you exactly why and it was probably for reasons that you may not expect so just to make sure that we are clear we're working from this workbook okay make sure you grab this workbook by texting the word workbook same number okay and i also i again want to make sure that if you're here that is the hardest part right you're here you're ready and so turn off you know close your door turn off your notifications close your other browsers really focus in for the next 30 minutes we're going to be going rapid fire uh i am not going to be answering questions during this 30 minutes but put all of your questions in the chat because come saturday we're doing the five days up until friday then saturday i'm going live again i'm gonna be answering your questions and then i'll be going live for several more days until tuesday where i'll bring on other experts i'll bring on uh folks who have had success stories i'll talk about my coaching and i'll also do recaps of things so i'll be coming back for multiple days so you really get the most out of these five day sessions okay uh so uh i really want you to think about how what you're doing in these sessions i'm getting lots of text from you saying i am doing the action items every day and really thinking about what is your almost certain future if nothing changes if you don't take action on anything that we're doing here if you are not going to switch up your strategy in the job search what is the almost certain future and knowing that in this session in these in this full series we can completely change the course of that so i'm geared up i'm fired up let's hop into this hop into your workbook um i'm gonna hop over to day four radiate competence and confidence in the interview and let's start with the first blank here so it says the interview is a hiring process not a rejection process it's funny when i talk to job seekers one of the things that comes up so often is this idea of like ah employers are the worst they're out to get me uh they it really seems like it's just a rejection process where as soon as i get on the call i feel like i'm set up to fail and say say yes in the chat if you've ever felt that way where it just feels like they're just getting on the call to disqualify you well the good news is is that it's a hiring process not a rejection process the absolute best case scenario when they send a request for you to interview is for you to pick up the phone and for you to be the answer to their problem they are dying for you to be the person who they select why because that will end this whole process you don't like interviewing they don't like interviewing so they're actually rooting for you to actually absolutely blow this interview out of the water and if any company gives you any interview that's a huge vote of confidence that they see something in you so it really is such a mindset shift to realize oh wow okay they really want me to be the person they you they want to be after the call say pack it up we found our person done and the reason why we don't always feel this way is because we're missing parts of our interview we're not answering questions the way it's most effective in the interview and then we kind of blame the process or or we feel like they are being unfair um we really we need to understand the human psychology there i'll give you an example so wilson from my standout job search coaching program he kept getting passed up for executive roles he would he was landing plenty of interviews that wasn't the issue um and when he joined my program i thought wow okay this guy is super impressive super charismatic his personality was so sparkling uh but then when i started watching footage of his interviews and talking to him about the way he interviews he would slip low value phrases into the way he talked and he also had this unnatural tone in his voice when he would interview and it was almost like sing-songy or a little bit more formal and put voice in the chat if you think you've noticed that you yourself have kind of a different voice when you're in an interview and this is something i see for a lot of job seekers is you kind of go into interview mode which isn't necessarily a bad thing right like i you know we we do want to be professional to a certain extent but it actually really would turn these employers off at least i could tell based on watching it and and seeing the way he interacted of wow there's wilson's personality and then his interview personality and it's totally different and so he also would skip over major things in his work experience that i thought were super important that he would kind of glaze over and really focus on other things that weren't as important and so these small differences i kind of kept tweaking it with him of these small differences led to exaggerated results and the next three final interviews he landed he landed three job offers oh my god snaps to wilson for doing that but that's what i'm talking about the stuff that we're going to be talking about today those are the tweaks that actually make all the difference and it's these small differences that can really change the game and so uh let me check the chat um yeah okay so a voice i'm hearing voice uh it's so weird says janelli yes uh uh kamala says voice evan says voice jana karthik okay yeah tracy calls it her telephone voice yeah valerie says oh yes voice yeah we it's a lot of us have this um yeah so this is something that we kind of want to shift away from and so um so how do we kind of combat this well if we go to the next part of your workbook this next section is your greatest enemy is what goes unsaid in the interview here's the thing is i have obviously trained lots of people to interview well but i'm also coming from the the employer side i have uh my background in human resources and also part of my job was to train interviewers to be more effective and i'm telling you right now whether they had one year or 30 years of experience interviewing most interviewers are not very good a lot of them don't ask effective questions so what i said at the beginning of this session was if you simply answer their questions you probably won't move on to the next round and that's because most interviewers don't ask very good questions and really i mean the key is to not only just ask a good first question but for them to ask good follow-up questions and often they're not giving you the right questions so you're basically set up to fail unless unless you understand first of all the question under the question so you're not answering the question at face value you're you know you're kind of getting a bit deeper or also you are you're always answering the question i never think you should just like hijack the interview but it's more that you go in to your interview with an idea of exactly what that employer needs to know in order to say yes to you and when you've done that strategizing you then find that your ability to weave that into your answers not completely say okay i'm gonna hold off on your question and tell you something completely different no you're able to weave it in strategically to where they're getting the right information they're focusing on the right things because you cannot depend on your interviewer to ask the right questions okay so say put in the chat um depend that we are not going to depend put depend in the chat if you are really getting that that we cannot depend on these interviewers and you know bless their heart they are doing their best we're all doing our best but you doing this preparation of really giving them exactly what they need is going to totally make all the difference um so let me see let me head over to the chat here yes okay i'm seeing alan michelle the mala katie yes okay i'm seeing lots of depend because we're not going to depend on anymore this is the shift i need you to make yes selena uh absolutely um and so that is like really such a mindset shift that we need to make and so there's a lot of different ways that we can make sure that we're steering the interview in the right direction now there's a lot i want to go into here i mean i would there's multiple ways it could be that you're really focused on hitting on those every single one of those 15 high competence triggers that make the company say okay yes this is the person we need um it's how to build out your job interview arsenal and really have all those things ready have all of your amazing research ahead of time um and it could be building out your your show don't tell and really making so that that that really speaks volumes for you uh it could be really understanding the three keys to a company perceiving you as higher value before you even get to talking about money which is super important and so there's a lot of different things but when i was thinking about what we should talk about today it's really about that first impression if we if we just can talk about one thing in half an hour it would be that the first five minutes of your interview make or break you often and that is just human psychology we just have these first impressions and so what i want to talk about today is really wrapping together all these different things that you've learned over the course of this week putting it all together and make an amazing first impression and essentially putting their attention towards the right things off the bat in the interview so that you are taking control of the interview without taking control of the interview right without waiting for them to ask you about a certain thing you're being very proactive about it so let's dive in we're gonna head over to your workbook and go to this first section here so i want you to write who you are in this first box now we covered this in day one where you can be anything but you can't be everything and about how it's so important that you focus in on your job title on your expertise and not keep it really broad so that's what i want you to do in this top section is keep it tight okay so i don't want you to say something a little bit more self-describing and more generic like i am a driven professional who loves working with people and i started my career in welding and then i went to no so we just want to keep it tight we want it to be something like i'm a human resources professional with expertise ex scaling companies in the technology industry okay so i want you to claim it i want you to keep it nice succinct and go ahead and put that in your first box why do we do this because these people are context switching if you're making a first impression you want and to immediately be branding yourself as exactly the person they want to talk to okay that's why specificity is important um okay the second part um so make sure you write that down and then i want to move to the second part of your workbook so on day two we talked about your strengths and how you are not going to emphasize what you love about your career and your story but instead what is the company interested in and so i want you to look back at your strengths and think about those strengths and think about what moments in your previous roles have those strengths really shown through and what are those accomplishments kind of associated with that and so instead of saying something generic here for your highlights like i always go the extra mile and build great experiences okay that's not really the highlight we're looking for um more it's it's saying something specific right it's like um i you know i build great experiences for example we had um clients come in from japan and we i really helped our team to study japanese business culture and made them feel really at home right something something a bit more about that experience or that accomplishment that can really illustrate that about yourself and so you can also think of some of your career highlights um from being inspired by what we did a few days prior which is really answering the question what am i good at that other people dread oftentimes there are some really great accomplishments that you may have achieved that root from that ability that you have so really thinking through okay how do we take that kind of abstract concept of things i'm good at the way i perform in the world to something that's actually a tangible accomplishment and we really want to give them these highlights so that they can really see these incredible things about you they can feel what it would be like to work with you okay good stuff all right make sure you're writing writing this down in your blank here okay day three is when we talked about your culture ad and i want to do a quick little quiz a quick little refresher what do we need to overcome any hesitations from a company what is that what is that ingredient we need to overcome any hesitations from a company it's one word put it in the chat that's a quick quiz okay put in the chat i'm gonna check in a minute um but what i'm about to teach you for from day three with the culture ad i do have to warn you right now that what i'm about to teach you is an advanced approach and i i don't recommend it for everyone i do think if you're going to use this third this third piece here this third approach that you should get your work reviewed by a coach or or someone else because it is tricky uh you want to articulate this in the right way and not let it backfire on you so i'm just giving that thing but i mean this is this is an advanced master class series so i want to make sure i'm giving you advanced approaches to put in your toolbox okay let's see if y'all got the question right trust oh my gosh look it um it's it's all showing up um so much here in in the chat chris christina annabelle samantha blaze jisha yeah tenessa oh yeah oh yeah we're seeing it we're seeing it all over um so really well done y'all got this right um so perfect exactly so we need to build that trust so let's let's revisit what we did from yesterday so knowing that um we can talk about our culture ad so we can address how our culture ad is an advantage so here's the thing that i was i was saying before is your greatest enemy in the job in the job interview is what goes unsaid and sometimes there's these things about us that your great butt aspect about us this is again a reference to yesterday's content that if they never ask you about it and you never talk about it they will just assume it as an issue and they will assume bad things about it such as they i've been in interview debriefs before where a higher where another interview will go yeah i think they're really great it's just it seems like they've job hopped a lot they've gone to a lot of different companies i'm just not sure if we want someone like that and i asked them oh okay did you have a discussion with them about it and they said no and i said okay was that on your list of of things that you were going to evaluate this person on they said no and i said okay well then maybe that shouldn't play into what you're evaluating them on and unfortunately there's not always someone there to like keep people in check and say that's not part of it so a lot of times if there is something that's that but that they might be holding back on you on they they won't vocalize it and then they'll just use it against you and so one way you can overcome this again this is an advanced approach is to proactively talk about it in say your intro as long as you're coming in strong okay i don't want this to be something where you're actually drawing them to focus on the negatives and it's bringing you down so one of the ways you can do this is you can use your culture ad as an advantage so let's say that your uh your culture ad is that you're from a different industry and that's going to be a blocker for them it's like oh they're not from our industry how can they ever be good at their job if they're not and so let's say you're moving from the hospitality to the e-commerce industry well one way that you could ease their mind is say something like while it appears that much of my experience is in hospitality i've handled much much of the e-commerce wing and have been exposed to some of the biggest supply chains in the world so maybe when you worked in hospitality you know you worked with the guest gift shop supply chains and and you know getting all the the the soap and the shampoo retailers and all that and so you can kind of really play that to your advantage of like yeah we the amount of e-commerce that's going on is pretty uh high high level so as long as you can find that connection that can make a huge difference okay and then we want to go to the fourth blank so go ahead and make sure you write that in there and you know i know i'm moving kind of quickly um you know i don't i just wanted to leave a bunch of white space in this but i really want you to kind of maybe jot down some ideas and i'll go on to the next section and so the next session is why this company now in your introduction what companies want to hear about is a lot about themselves and why you think that this company is your best next step and the thing is is that companies want people who want them if there are two candidates who are equally qualified who are really neck and neck every time the company will choose the candidate who wants the job more how do they know who wants the job more well it's based on the way you show enthusiasm that you show that you've thought thoroughly about what it'd be like to work there and so this part you can fill this out now if you have a company you're interviewing with now or if you have a dream company that you want to fill it out for obviously this this will change each time and you're going to want to edit this part if what you say could easily be said about their competitor if that's true then your answer is not specific enough okay so this is not about selling yourself this is more about talking about them all right so i am going to pause here for a moment because you know we've given you so much this week and we're going to continue to pile it on today tomorrow for the rest of the week uh but a lot of you have reached out and said madeline i want to work with you and now you're looking to pivot those skills into a new career a new industry yes this would be good for you if you've made great career progress you're looking to accelerate that yes this be good for you um or if you're in a situation where maybe you've stayed home for years and now you're looking to go back into the workforce yes this would work for you um it really is also for the type of person
