Davis on COVID protocols and Moody's downgrade

moments after the ceremony prime minister davis spoke with reporters regarding his decision to extend the country's curfew as well as the recent economic downgrade our sanchesca brown has the details in this report tonight in one of his first acts is prime minister philip davis extended the country's daily curfew from 9 pm to 11 59 p.m the amendment to the emergency order took effect on friday the extension comes as the country continues to battle its third and worst wave of covet 19. when asked why he made the decision to relax the curfew davis said there was no data to prove that the curfew had any impact on fighting the deadly virus that decision was made in the context of it having been 12 59 the night before and there seemed to be no no rhyme or reason for keeping it at at nine and so that decision was made fortunately i had a conversation and have met already with uh dr dal regis who's been leading the charge and the fight on the front line on this pandemic on monday after the appointment i'm minister of health we'll be we'll be quickly getting into the nuts and bolts of where we are what we have to do how to get it done to ensure that we get this pandemic under control curfews on the face of it from the medical information we have is not it's not a tool that is effective against the fight but i am to get more information on that on in the coming weeks and we'll decide how that may move forward with curfews or not at all but that's after having having further conversations with the medical experts the country's sovereign rating was also downgraded to ba3 from ba2 on friday highlighting the daunting economic and fiscal realities facing the nation and the new davis-led administration the latest action plunges the bahamas further into non-investment grade or junk status davis said the move is not surprising if anyone has been following the fiscal affairs of this country you knew for quite a while we were headed over the fiscal cliff in fact i recall speaking to that in the 2019 budget even before dorian that's where we're headed and so this is not surprising and um it's supricious that it only came out then but we suspect that that information was was had was in the making for quite a while but it was only released on election days so it's not i think to impact the results it didn't now davis appointed deputy prime minister chester cooper as minister of tourism investment and aviation he says the other appointments will be announced shortly well i'm working on that now and hopefully we should be able to complete them by sunday we're swearing in so many by monday and we're we're ready to go and i'm trying to get things because we do have these twin crisis that we have to deal with davis also pledged to be more accessible to the press than the former prime ministers have been i am setting my chart as soon as i would have seen where i am we'll decide what i do but one thing you can show up be assured of i'm not going to run from you sanchesca brown eyewitness news
