happened early on and I'm glad because of you I actually went to the premiere of the first episode and Paul Rosenberg was sitting right behind me and he goes to me oh you know what I wanted to talk to you about working for um Eminem's clothing line in the next yeah next day I had a job because I went to the premiere is that true yeah you've helped me out a lot you see that good things do that absolutely not Dave you you said something interesting you said you don't ever want to just present something bad you still feel like you got something to prove because you like critically-acclaimed you're respected by your peers you feel like you got something proof oh no it's nothing you fail yet so the proof I'm sure you guys feel this thing where it's like quality control right yeah yeah you and so I said okay she was you know setting everything up and I said I'm really excited and then Tondo screenshotted it and sent it to me outside the group chat and said you've never been excited I was excited what you could that dui's was it was I could work with this guy oh the first time I heard about you I was I went home to DC and I went to the comedy club and I had some old college like was popping around here and everybody was like yo you guys see this new kid Dino Rawlings and then I met you and we had it we had a swell time you know that yeah I do i watch the like okay like I watched your show online Oh like I watched all you guys I've seen I just watch the interview that you do with Neil yeah yeah that's my guy I watched you on a real estate show and then out and I saw you with the DJ I've presented awards yeah and you promised you said I'm gonna come on the show you said you know I gotta need a little time but i'ma come yeah that's right that's right you definitely kept your word yeah my guy Neil why do you think why people gravitated towards you your comedy because it's been like that your whole career well you know I don't know I don't look at it that way like the lights are really gravitating think all of us at some point we have ventured into some kind of cultural crossroads with black people with corporate people and we all smoked weed we almost smoked we we all you know we traverse the American landscape so I don't think there's anyone in America that I'm incapable of communicating do you want some of them do you think so sensitive now do you think away from any topics cuz I do feel like everybody's so politically correct you know and I also find it ironic that everybody's I keep walked away from 50 million but then you came back and got 60 million doing Netflix specials yeah well you know yeah thank God that there was a happy ending but I could have just never worked again hmm you know but I never stopped even when I was like not in the public eye I was still playing at comedy clubs mmm and I found an altitude that I was comfortable with and you know a good time how many times a day two done they'll call you and beg you to come back he didn't go well you guys always in communication cuz Dino did it for a while he was in a state of depression Donelle was Jesus myself I think you know when I was gone I think I stayed I now stay in touch with me and Neal will cool the whole time you know it wasn't it wasn't as the bad blood amongst like people would assume that I left in a huff it wasn't like I'm I did leave in a huff I went mad a lot of people like after you know after you left a lot of people would ask me you know how I feel about or whatever are you upset and I never was upset because I was doing comedy for a while before I was introduced to Dave Chappelle like with anything you can be you could be as talented as you want but until you get the right platform nobody you never know about it gotcha so you know if I can't be in a Dave Chappelle's in here [Laughter] [Laughter] I always felt that I was talented but again you need the right opportunity like even if sports you know you could be a talented person but until the coach put you in the game nobody will never see what you on so you do so he gave me a platform to do what I've been doing for years I think there was an even exchange okay so Dave favorite rapper cuz you a hip hop head do you appreciate anything from this generation I appreciate it I'm not party to if I go out when they play me goes I listen to that yeah yeah but a favorite mumble rapper I don't know about yeah I like to be able to say the lyrics too you know well I can tell who you really like based on who you have on tour when you well when you do this residency that you're doing in New York City at Radio City I I can see the two hand-picked the artists that you wanted to be there yeah you know it's funny man okay so so this year will be like my 30th anniversary standard hmm I figured I should mark that occasion right you know was those businesses hard you you existed in a long time it's good and stop for a minute and just appreciate the fact that you I'm still able to do this and I'm very lucky to be successful so it's it's a it's a celebration like even now you'll see my next special to act I'm doing there I like it because there's joy in it I'm really enjoying what I really you know I mean it's like I was okay I hated it mm-hmm you know like what did you hate about exactly I hate it going up I hate the thought of jumping the hole going up part I didn't like it because it was terrifying the entire time like okay I got yes in the beginning of the plane right then the door opens yep you realized you expected to jump out and I'm strapped to a guy that I've never met before and I didn't see the chute pack and oh my god I have kids and all this stuff you thinking as you edged up to the door next you know you just in the sky no logical reason to be there no there's no you know my life didn't depend on and yet I jumped out of his plane and he was falling anyone said it feels like flying but to me it felt like falling about 120 miles and I was terrified so what did you get out the situation other than being terrified well the point is when you win the chute lands and you survive it you go home at night you eat dinner food taste but house is quiet and still in it you feel comfortable in saving your house like man I'm glad to be home everything's good so that's what it felt like it felt like coming back and doing it sniffle expression oh that felt like my chute open and everything is just good I'm black in America all I got to do the drive through the neighborhood that I live in and make it home without being stopped and I feel dig alright well I live in a much nicer neighborhood [Laughter] but it's not like I'm gonna try to survive a traffic stop just to get that feeling I mean because the black experience but I did it I don't know why I did it but the point is that now there's just I'm happy to be doing them would you do it again what quit my show no no I don't think I would man and I mean like I get it I know what it's about you know what I mean I just think that you know something it's just one of those things that I didn't even mean to do it the first time it's a long story Dave I hate to do this but I have to put you in a spot but could you explain to the Breakfast Club what you did to my apple pie a year ago now he's talked okay so we were playing at the Pabst Blue Ribbon theater and as far as theaters go like the paps has one of the best amenities package for perform mmm you go backstage they have like a pastry chef they cater like an excellent dinner every night you know they got vinyl records in the green room and a bar and a barista I guess it's dope back there and the pastry chef and Darnell hit it off the person I did engage me she was a real sweet woman and she really liked down there so I came to work and she had baked him a pie and the pie had his name stenciled in the crust and I was excited about it because every day she would kind of where she says anything that you could do for them is anything especially when I was I make me a passion so that's pretty simple I said well if that's so simple make me a pie and put my name on the top of the pot okay all right no I just knew that done it was heavy about the pie that is correct I actually put my do I do finally got me game I'm sure everybody I got the pie in his face and he looks at me and says Darnell is gonna take every muscle in my body for me not to stick my dick in your we call friends I was taught me like I had to go on stage like I'm gonna secure down like a jockey but they say you can't keep all your Posse where could you keep on Dave's dick and make sure they'll go with you leading the prime they would go he was like cuz somebody put that pie in the microwave for the last time you been humble deep humbled yeah you me like well professionally or personal it's right yeah everybody know you think if I'm walking down a street in a lady can I take a picture in she's not a worker camera and we all standing there but she do that because you got you know you get humility being a parents humiliating being a husband Millie 80 all of its humiliated yeah cuz it's like new experiences I guess that we're kind of like learning on the job training kinda jump out a plane to some extreme calibrate on the ground oh hi side of 2020 was it was everything worth it like everything you want to do like even the special experience and even walking away from it was it all worth it Amen yeah I was I was having of that show you know I'm sorry it ended the way it ended but I enjoyed making that show it was it was an experience that very few people get there you miss it especially with everything going on and so much material yeah because I see so yeah damn a mr. Chappelle show yeah I miss it too you know but I think I don't know if I could do it again though cuz I miss it but then I remember what it was like to do it and it just wasn't might be easier Anatomy just because of technology yeah the internet ruined shit cuz it won't be the same yeah stuff that you want to do somebody you'll do on YouTube ten times faster than ten times worse right yeah it's true but you didn't play a lot of people it was great yeah I worked with a lot of great people I was doing Sean Atlanta the other night and bumped it to like some of the guys from the crew I hadn't seen those guys as I walked up the step it was good to see him you know you remember people finally like after it's all said and done so I you know I do have bad feelings about how it ended but I don't have bad feelings about what it was it was a great experience how did Charlie Murphy's passing affect you because I know you guys him pretty close it was tough it was a reality that if was one of those moments you I don't think I've ever seen you cry I feel very lucky that I got to know I feel like he's a very large part of the reason that I got to be successful like literally changed my life just by saying I've fought Rick James many times really well he fuck regime I didn't know you can say fuck on the radio but no he said he fought Rick James many times it we tell us the story of lunch and it literally from then order just changed it changed our lives your immortalizing yeah man but you know I got to like meet and work with Rick in the mean you know Charlie and he was an OG like Charlie's been around the block you know his brother is Eddie Murphy he's seen the epicenter of like the fame that we all wanted to acquire he had great stories and and he was also a real nurturing dude I think he gave me great advice you know I got mrs. presents man I'm real I was real sad II hate that I did a great job on power he took Darnell's job but I will say you know like you when other people get stuff away from yourself it's hard to celebrate that but you know when I found out that Charlie was doing that role I I realized it he was probably perfect person for him and in hindsight as far as William passed away or whatever I just think this is a nice thing for people to see him being a part of a great body of work I did a good job in that role you know I see you more like you can't picture me in no room at the corner when you would um well the doping yeah Charlie definitely I don't think about your own mortality because I know Darnell called me one day Randy was like y'all just want to tell you man you know I'm saying you know people dying and we you might die so I was gonna tell you I love you doing a good job right but no I will say I don't have different answers like when someone passed when specially somebody that you care about it makes you think about people important in your life and people that you respect and I don't know I was probably you know in my feelings that day but I and it was at a time when you just dropped your book and I'm saying like your transition from not just doing urban stuff but like the media runnings you did well she be real all of white folks did you partner up I was like he's taking it to the next level and another thing in our community is not too often in people read books so the fact that you know a brother put a book out he got people that wouldn't normally pay attention that like I know it's hard to say I didn't say um no homo before I said that's the one time did we really appreciate people Nazareth in death right true someone passed away it makes you think about so many times and I like we get to a point where you said yourself you don't because we need to compete with stuff like that don't not at all yeah I'm yeah I'm really like really really happy right now and I you know I appreciate it like my kids are safe right now ones happy ones fan clean and it's good look a couple of times another legend another icon yeah he's that's the homie man there's only two of y'all in that space though yeah Chris is there he's definitely big brother though he's like he's killing it I went so exact the time we've ever officially headline a show a co-headlining show together and I'm very excited about it cuz it's the first time any comic has ever done a residency of a month everybody at City Music Hall Dave is a real humble do he's not gonna say really the spectacle of what's about to go down but nobody's ever done a joint where like the entire month of August we locking everything down we got some of the best not just to stand up with the music side of it it's gonna be crazy you got yeah seeing bay coming out I thought he retired from doing shows well it took some convincing but you know yeah he's coming back the country are you performing like via satellite of them I believe he's physically contractually gonna beat it hologram it's gonna be great man Lowe's is coming out chance the rapper chance miss Lauryn Hill mm-hm Erykah Badu but the roots the roots where do you draw the line when it comes to like a cultural appropriation what do you mean like as far as like white people great music you hear it in the movie it's exciting it's like you're in the movies watching Tupac perform email I was in Tupac but then there were certain things like it it starts before Tupac is born and it ends when he dies that's a long period of time to cover and so many things that happen and to Puck's life and he was such a complex person and so many different incidents you ever a club when Tupac was there no never it wasn't that much fun really scary being apart just like a lot of dark shit was around a guy I don't know like culturally that those with darker times yeah they're right of not doing what I want to do made me do what I wanted even Kevin Hart's book he talks about doing comedy because he was just trying to survive to like just being funny is what actually helped him not yeah I wonder what makes it makes you believe this things can save you though it absolutely did look at a guy like Kevin Hart's motherfuckers from Philly he's the number one selling artist on tour on Earth from any John you know I'm very proud that somebody from my jaw is at the top of the food chain is right somebody I remember him starting out this it's amazing to see it and he's absolutely could save your life what made you think that you fans talking and and your liking of controversial questions would take as far as it that's true I never met you but you wanted a few celebrities that
