[Music] in canto xvii of inferno from the ravine a beast with the face of a man the body of a serpent and a tail tip like a scorpions lands on the edge virgil and dante get closer to it and see sinners sitting nearby virgil encourages him to go closer to them so he can see the state they are in dante gets closer and can see they're constantly trying to wave off the flames in hots and they have purses around their necks each with a different color an envelope virgil has climbed aboard the beasts back and invites dante to as well afraid but ashamed to admit it he obliges jerry on the beast flies downward and lands the poet's disembark and the beast disappears in greek mythology Jerian is the grandson of medusa on his father's side but also of titans on his mother's side as a monster with the face of a gracious man Jerian is suited to guard those who sin was fraud dante has been growing in his confidence and courage and this shows just how far he has come when virgil sends him off alone to talk to some spirits we could see that dante has overcome his intense fear with bravery even though he notes that that bravery is the kind that comes from not wanting to admit that you are afraid
