hi i'm just wanted to check in really quickly i'm actually on my way to see daniel arsham's new exhibit at peritone gallery in the lower east side and i am so excited a that i was invited to this preview so thank you periton for that because honestly the show is booked out i know for sure this weekend probably next weekend at this point everyone's really excited to see it and they're trying to keep everyone socially distanced obviously and so yeah i'm just excited i get a chance to pop in a little bit early get some video get some photos for you guys and uh yeah just share the experience this is an extra special show because dana arsham will be introducing paintings which i don't know if he's actually ever shown off his paintings other than when he was back in art school so this is going to be really special and i've already seen a lot of the in-progress pics on instagram and they look i mean i don't know why he hasn't been doing painting this whole time to be honest they are just to die for but i am biased i'm a sucker for a big beautiful painting so yeah but anyway come along with me and we're gonna have a good time see you there [Music] so i'm actually going to start out the tour of this exhibit on the third floor so if you haven't been to periton in new york there are three floors and daniel arsham's exhibit does take over all three floors which is great but in my opinion the third floor is my absolute favorite because it has the largest paintings [Music] and this exhibit is titled time dilation and it's incredibly special because it features large-scale paintings by arsham as a complement to his signature sculptures and honestly this is a full circle moment for arsham's career as an artist because he actually studied painting an art school at cooper union but honestly his entire career has really been based around sculpture so for him to now incorporate painting back into his practice it's really special and these aren't just any paintings i mean the incredible amount of detail and skill that's apparent is in my opinion it's it's kind of a little cheeky it's it's no secret that arsham has been given flack over his career for his decision to have these really recognizable pop cultural references like so many other pop artists in the past like andy warhol received a lot of you know negative feedback within their time so i find these these subject matters really cheeky on his part because he's not only including these really beautiful large-scale incredibly well-executed paintings but he's including statues that are literally the epitome of classical art history his gorgeous execution of the most traditional subject matter of course still with his key signatures that he has as an artist like including this concept of time by showing these items decaying with these crystals protruding from them in my opinion he's basically saying with this exhibit like hey everybody i've been this incredible artist based on your criteria as a society all along and he's really just driving home the concept that just because you can do something doesn't mean that that makes you a good artist you know at the end of the day it's going to be about your ideas and the context around it the concept of what's good or interesting is honestly constantly changing and that's what this exhibition is really bringing to light in fact glenn adamson who's the curator of this exhibit says ancient sculpture is so venerated that it's become cliche the stuff of museum gift shops while the creatures of pokemon which seem to be influenced by japanese mythology have morphed into their own 21st century version of the sacred [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i think this might be my favorite combination in this corner of painting and sculpture [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] there's just something so breathtaking about the contrast of her skin with these white and gold crystals i love the arm kind of being exposed almost like a bone it's just yeah it's definitely my favorite the whole show also the full skill kind of reminds me of what we played with when we were kids so i think i feel a little nostalgic looking at this [Music] [Music] we're now gonna head down to the second floor i just love everything about this gallery it's so modern beautiful that's the elevator that brings all the artwork up and yeah this is the second part of the exhibit it's almost a little ominous it's very dark you don't kind of know what's gonna be at the end of the hall i feel like we're walking into a sci-fi movie so on the third floor we talked about contrast this contrast of old and new with these classical sculptures against these modern day pokemon characters and on this floor we're still playing with contrast but different type of contrast at first glance you might notice these ropes that are sort of tethered from the ceiling down into these objects and it almost looks like these items are being organically grown and there's contrast in this considering that these items are characteristically manufactured like a keyboard magazines cameras and another interesting contrast is this concept of physicalness like these are clearly analog objects that are present in real life but they almost look virtual particularly the ones that are up on the wall here they almost look like they've been scanned by a computer but they really are very much 3d the concept of time and future and culture are all themes that are present in arsham's practice and this is why he often uses resin molds which created these works and plaster and crystals to depict decay like in the works that we saw previously [Music] [Music] [Applause] and on the ground floor we have more paintings and sculptures and i was very excited to see these really traditional works because in early 2020 before the pandemic i believe the exhibit closed in march arsham had an exhibit in periton in paris that originally featured these classical sculptures and it was all based on the fact that he got this incredible opportunity in which he was granted access to a 200 year old french molding atelier that reproduces masterpieces for several of europe's major museums and according to periton arsham was able to use molds and scans of some of the most iconic works from the collections of the louvre in paris the acropolis and athens and many more as source material for his new body of work honestly that was a once-in-a-lifetime show to see so i'm really glad that he's continued to be inspired by those classical figures and he's incorporated them into this show in such a new and fresh way [Music] [Music] uh [Music] please foreign [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] please [Music] please
