welcome to day 13 of daily wisdom a 31 day journey through the book of proverbs i'm melissa papier and i'll be your guide for today's [Music] teaching have the honor and privilege of serving as the children's ministry resident here at journey christian church and this month we've been walking through the book of proverbs each and every single day chapter by chapter and i'm so excited as we continue this series now today we're going to do a brief overview of proverbs 13 as we continue seeking daily wisdom this passage is full of so many themes but today we are going to focus on what it looks like to receive instruction in a healthy way as we seek wisdom from others at each stage of our lives there is a person of authority instructing and guiding us on how to live these people are parents teachers managers supervisors and eventually even our kids how we receive this instruction is a determining factor of how wise we really are now in proverbs 13 solomon begins the passage by writing to his son about the value of correction first one says a wise son heeds his father's instruction but a mocker does not respond to rebuke i grew up as an only child in a home with two loving parents i was their little princess but i wasn't immune to sin i definitely had times where i disobeyed and got in trouble and when i was a kid whenever i didn't listen my mom would count to three one two and you didn't want her to get to three and then she would tell me to go sit on the steps i would scream i would cry it would be as dramatic as humanly possible but i would still have to go sit on the steps and if we were out and there were no steps then i had to go sit on the bathroom toilet and sometimes if i was still a mess i would have to sit on the steps twice not just once twice sometimes even three or four to this day i do not understand the purpose of sitting on the steps but it worked it taught me right from wrong it taught me how to behave well i did not like to be embarrassed or to disappoint my parents and over time i began to learn to listen and honor my parents however as i grow older unfortunately sitting on the steps is no longer the consequence to rejecting wisdom my supervisors and managers aren't going to have me go sit on the steps when i don't do what they tell me to do so what encourages me to listen to them why are we told to respect authority why can't we just go our own way the big question is how do you receive instruction throughout this passage i'm going to highlight four practical qualities that will help you to grow in receiving instruction well this first quality is going to be guard your lips the passage continues in verse 3 by saying those who guard their lips preserve their lives but those who speak rashly will come to ruin the old phrase think before you speak is a very well-known cliche we use throughout our lives on the playground in the classroom in the conference room and in the home how we respond to others can display honor respect and christ's love or it can show bitterness frustration and sin now i don't know about you but i tend to talk a lot i actually won a superlative award in college for human megaphone honestly i probably don't even need this microphone and in case you're wondering yes my entire family is loud like me too well i love to have fun talk be crazy and loud i found that this can be a stumbling block when trying to connect with others and receiving instruction the lord has humbled me and taught me a lot about the value of listening to others when discussing the value of listening in terms of leadership dr tim elmore states the focus is on understanding not just being understood too often we are quick to speak and slow to listen this passage is challenging us to receive what people say before we respond as followers of christ we need to watch what we say the second quality is diligence and verse 4 continues by saying a sluggard's appetite is never filled but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied growing up my dad and i used to joke a lot about being couch potatoes and we could just sit for nothing and do hours for hours and hours at a time we would even sing a song about it i wanna be a couch potato couch potato couch potato i wanna be a couch potato all day long clearly the both of us are fully capable of living the rest of our lives glued to our comfy chairs however part of us is aware that there is something more to life that only comes from hard work at the beginning of the pandemic when my family was confined to our small new york home we're all becoming a bit stir crazy my parents are both teachers and i was a student at liberty university so we would all be separate rooms doing online school and zoom classes there wasn't really a room that you can go to to get much privacy and after i finished my semester i decided i needed more than just my room so i cleared out our computer room to create an office space for myself however my dad's pandemic project was building shelves and yes it was as annoying and ratchet as you may think i would literally be in the office facing the wall and on the other side my dad would be banging and drilling on the wall facing me messing around with my stuff all day and the worst was when i would hear him say oh no he likes to think that he's mr fix it but now we just have a bunch of shelves that attempt to cover up many many holes all joking aside i greatly appreciated how my dad took the time to help us all feel a bit more comfortable in our home during such a challenging season when i look up from my bed and i see so many memories lined up against the wall i smile and get emotional about how thankful i am to have a dad that loves me so well inside i knew and know to this day that my dad knew that there was something more than there than just being a couch potato and watching criminal minds he was diligent to learn how to build shelves oh kind of and get it done his diligent active service was a response to wisdom watching him lead in our home showed me what it looked like to be diligent and challenged me to grow now my questions to you are are you pursuing diligence or are you currently glued to your comfy chair pursuing diligence can look like eliminating distractions from your life that keep you from being intentional planning out your time and organizing yourself well and scheduling intentional time with god your spouse children close friends or colleagues start with one step forward and see where god leads you the third quality is integrity the passage continues in verse 5 by saying the righteous hate what's false but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves righteousness guards the person of integrity but wickedness overthrows the sinner dr tim elmore defined integrity by saying integrity simply means to be whole as one unit as in one integer integrity goes beyond honesty and challenges us to seek completeness in our heavenly father the beauty of the gospel is that through jesus we are made whole sin corrupted a perfect world and separated us from the ability to be in communion with the lord but god sent jesus to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins of the world to restore us and for our ability to be in relationship with him as followers of christ the holy spirit lives in us and we are now called to live like jesus who is the light of the world now this truth leads us to our fourth quality which is living as light the passage continues in verse 9 by saying the light of righteousness shines brightly but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out in today's world there are many voices telling us how to live think and act however the only example worth following is jesus's jesus lived a counter-cultural life his continued pursuit of holiness guarded him as he walked on earth he was honest and confident about his convictions and about who his father is he did not hold back he stood firm he often went away to a quiet place to pray and ask god for help there were times where all hope seemed lost but jesus remained faithful and was confident in his father to fulfill his promises that is the same hope that we can have today now i want to challenge you to pray and ask god to reveal to you the areas that you need to trust in him more maybe you have never trusted in him before now is your chance to commit or recommit your life to christ take a moment to pause this video to pray ask the lord what it looks like to trust him each and every single day the more we seek the lord confidently the more we are able to live boldly for his glory let your life shine brightly for jesus as you pursue him daily now all the qualities we discussed built to three closing application points that help us to answer the question to how to best respond to instruction the first is highlighted in verses 13 to 14 which continue by saying whoever scorns instruction will pay for it but whoever respects a command is rewarded the teaching of the wise is a fountain of life turning a person from the snares of death we respect instruction and we are diligent to be obedient because we recognize that the teaching of the wise is the fountain of life when we pursue wisdom we are walking in step with how god desires us to live we turn away from the patterns of this world and live as new creation when people see us they see jesus you have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of jesus through the way that you love others and respond to authority it's not always easy but easy street is a dead end street hebrews 12 1-2 says therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us throw off everything that hinders us and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perseverance the race marked out before us fixing our eyes on jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith for the joy set before him he endured the cross scoring shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of god because of jesus we have been set free from chains of sin that once shackled us and we are called to live in that freedom our salvation is not meant to be a one-time transaction but a new life that we wholeheartedly embody running the race of life is never easy but when we fix our eyes on jesus he becomes our strength we make wise choices because god's ways are the best ways and we love people because god loves all people now skipping ahead to verse 20 the passage continues with the second application point by saying walk with the wise and become wise for a companion of fools suffers harm this second point being walk with the wise do you surround yourself with wise people do the people you are closest with encourage you to make wise choices who do you allow to have influence in your life who you associate with has the influence in your life to help you either become more wise or suffer harm those people have the ability to impact how you respond do your relationships reflect your daily pursuit of wisdom maybe today you need to reevaluate your current relationships and have some difficult conversations prayerfully surround yourself with people who will help you to grow into the person that god created you to be people will make mistakes and they will fail you but healthy community loves each other with the grace and patience of god and builds one another up in the truth of christ romans 12 2 says do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind then you will be able to test and approve what god's will is his good pleasing and perfect will continue to renew your mind with the truth of christ seeking wisdom and listening to wise instruction don't allow the temptation of conforti to hold you back from living the free life that god has desired you to live the people that you surround yourself with have the power to influence you in this now the passage proverbs 13 finishes out with our third application point in verses 24 to 25 by saying whoever spares the rod hates their children but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them the righteous eat to their hearts content but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry i am so thankful for my parents for raising me well they disciplined me when they needed to which taught me to respect and honor authority but they also taught me about the true reason why we are called to value instruction which is the undeserving grace that jesus freely offers us first peter 2 21-25 says to this you were called because christ suffered for you leaving you as an example that you should follow in his steps he committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth when they hurled their inserts at him he did not retaliate when he suffered he made no threats instead he entrusted himself to him who judges justly he himself bore our sins in his body on the cross so that we may die to sins and live for righteousness by his wounds you have been healed for you were like a sheep going astray but now you've returned to the shepherd and overseers of your souls we find that because of christ there is a reason to value instruction in this world people will fail us and they will not always lead us well but when we approach them with the loving grace of jesus we're able to humbly submit to their leadership jesus is the key we are called to follow the example of grace that christ sets as we seek wisdom daily through your actions people will see jesus you are a living testimony so now i ask the question again how do you receive instruction what steps you need to take today to put your faith in action as you honor others through the way you respond to instruction and receive authority and wisdom from others there is always going to be someone an authority over us how will you receive their instruction let's pray together god i'm so thankful for the opportunity to get to freely open your word and to hear from you god i pray that we would boldly and confidently seek you daily that we would find ourselves in you in your word and that we would seek daily wisdom god i pray as we go throughout the rest of this day and through us the rest of the study that we would just glorify you in all that we do in jesus name pray amen [Music] thank you for joining us for daily wisdom and
