>> A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF SAINT PAUL TO TIMOTHY. BELOVED: FIRST OF ALL, I ASK THAT SUPPLICATIONS, PRAYERS, PETITIONS, AND THANKSGIVINGS BE OFFERED FOR EVERYONE, FOR KINGS AND FOR ALL IN AUTHORITY, THAT WE MAY LEAD A QUIET AND TRANQUIL LIFE IN ALL DEVOTION AND DIGNITY. THIS IS GOOD AND PLEASING TO GOD OUR SAVIOR, WHO WILLS EVERYONE TO BE SAVED AND TO COME TO KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH. FOR THERE IS ONE GOD. THERE IS ALSO ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MEN, THE MAN CHRIST JESUS, WHO GAVE HIMSELF AS RANSOM FOR ALL. THIS WAS THE TESTIMONY AT THE PROPER TIME. FOR THIS I WAS APPOINTED PREACHER AND APOSTLE; I AM SPEAKING THE TRUTH, I AM NOT LYING, TEACHER OF THE GENTILES IN FAITH AND TRUTH. IT IS MY WISH, THEN, THAT IN EVERY PLACE THE MEN SHOULD PRAY, LIFTING UP HOLY HANDS, WITHOUT ANGER OR ARGUMENT. ♪ VERBUM DOMINI ♪ >> ♪ DEO GRATIAS ♪ >> BLESSED BE THE LORD, FOR HE HAS HEARD MY PRAYER. >> BLESSED BE THE LORD, FOR HE HAS HEARD MY PRAYER. >> HEAR THE SOUND OF MY PLEADING, WHEN I CRY TO YOU, LIFTING UP MY HANDS TOWARD YOUR HOLY SHRINE. >> BLESSED BE THE LORD, FOR HE HAS HEARD MY PRAYER. >> THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SHIELD; IN HIM MY HEART TRUSTS, AND I FIND HELP; THEN MY HEART EXULTS, AND WITH MY SONG I GIVE HIM THANKS. >> BLESSED BE THE LORD, FOR HE HAS HEARD MY PRAYER. >> THE LORD IS THE STRENGTH OF HIS PEOPLE, THE SAVING REFUGE OF HIS ANOINTED. A CENTURION THERE HAD A SLAVE WHO WAS ILL AND ABOUT TO DIE, AND HE WAS VALUABLE TO HIM. WHEN HE HEARD ABOUT JESUS, HE SENT ELDERS OF THE JEWS TO HIM, ASKING HIM TO COME AND SAVE THE LIFE OF HIS SLAVE. THEY APPROACHED JESUS AND STRONGLY URGED HIM TO COME, SAYING, HE DESERVES TO HAVE YOU DO THIS FOR HIM, FOR HE LOVES OUR NATION AND HE BUILT THE SYNAGOGUE FOR US. AND JESUS WENT WITH THEM, BUT WHEN HE WAS ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE HOUSE, THE CENTURION SENT FRIENDS TO TELL HIM, LORD, DO NOT TROUBLE YOURSELF, FOR I AM NOT WORTHY TO HAVE YOU ENTER UNDER MY ROOF. THEREFORE, I DID NOT CONSIDER MYSELF WORTHY TO COME TO YOU; BUT SAY THE WORD AND LET MY SERVANT BE HEALED. FOR I TOO AM A PERSON SUBJECT TO AUTHORITY, WITH SOLDIERS SUBJECT TO ME. AND I SAY TO ONE, GO, AND HE GOES; AND TO ANOTHER, COME HERE, AND HE COMES; AND TO MY SLAVE, DO THIS, AND HE DOES IT. WHEN JESUS HEARD THIS HE WAS AMAZED AT HIM AND, TURNING, SAID TO THE CROWD FOLLOWING HIM, I TELL YOU, NOT EVEN IN ISRAEL HAVE I FOUND SUCH FAITH. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM AS SOME PRONOUNCE IT. BISHOP AND DR. OF THE CHURCH ON SEPTEMBER 13 AND HOW LUCKY IS HE THAT HIS UNIVERSAL MEMORIAL FALLS WITHIN THE LITTLE OCTAVE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN FROM SEPTEMBER 8 HER NATIVITY THROUGH SEPTEMBER 15 THE MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS. HE IS A LUCKY GUY TO HAVE THAT HAPPEN IN MY OPINION. ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM WAS BORN AT ANTIOCH IN SYRIA, PRESENT DAY TURKEY IN 349. AFTER AN EXTENSIVE EDUCATION HE SPENT 4 YEARS IN THE HERMITAGE PRACTICING ASCETICISM. AFTER THIS HE WAS ORDAINED A PRIEST IN ANTIOCH WHERE HE DELIVERED HIS FAMOUS HOMILIES ON THE STATUES. A SERIES OF HOMILIES ON THE STATUES IN THE WAKE OF VIOLENT CIVIL DEMONSTRATIONS. HE DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF BY PREACHING WHICH ACHIEVED GREAT SPIRITUAL RESULTS AMONG THOSE WHO HEARD HIM. HE TAUGHT, WE ARE COMMANDED TO HAVE ONLY ONE ENEMY, THE DEVIL. WITH HIM NEVER BE RECONCILED. BUT WITH A BROTHER, NEVER BE AT ENMITY IN YOUR HEART. END OF THE QUOTATION. IN 397 JOHN WAS ELECTED BISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE, THE SEAT OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE. AS BISHOP HE PROVED HIMSELF A CAPABLE PASTOR, COMMITTING TO REFORMING THE LIFE OF THE CLERGY AND THE FAITHFUL. HIS PREACHING AND WRITING EXPLAINED CATHOLIC DOCTRINE AND PRESENTED THE IDEAL CHRISTIAN LIFE. FOR THIS REASON HE IS CALLED CHRYSOSTOM OR GOLDEN MOUTH. HIS WILLINGNESS TO PREACH THE GOSPEL IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON, TIMOTHY 4:2, RESULTED IN HIS BANISHMENT TO ARMENIA IN 404. TWICE HE WAS FORCED INTO EXILE BY THE HATRED OF THE IMPERIAL COURT AND THE ENVY OF HIS ENEMIES. AFTER HE COMPLETED HIS MANY DIFFICULT LABORS HE DIED AT COMANA IN PONTUS ON SEPTEMBER 14 IN 407, THE FEAST OF THE TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS, WHICH WE CELEBRATE TOMORROW. JOHN IS 1 OF THE PATRON SAINTS OF PREACHERS. 1 OF THE SHORTER LIVES OF HIS TELLS US THIS. THAT HE WAS BORN IN ANTIOCH IN PRESENT DAY TURKEY IN 349 WHERE HE SERVED 11 YEARS AS A PRIEST BEFORE HE WAS RAISED TO THE EPISCOPATE IN CONSTANTINOPLE A GEOGRAPHICAL CENTER OF WEALTH, POWER AND POLITICAL INTRIGUE. JOHN PREACHED JESUS CHRIST TO RICH AND POOR ALIKE AND AFTER HE CENSORED THE EMPRESS EUDOXIA FOR SCANDALOUS PUBLIC BEHAVIOR HE WAS BANISHED TO ARMENIA. FROM EXILE HE WROTE LETTERS OF COMFORT TO HIS FRIENDS. HE WROTE, ALL THINGS WILL CERTAINLY TURN OUT WHETHER IN THIS LIFE OR THE LIFE TO COME. IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE YIELD TO THE INCOMPREHENSIBILITY OF GOD'S DIVINE PROVIDENCE. GOD'S DIVINE PROVIDENCE IS SOMETIMES INCOMPREHENSIBLE. RIGHT? WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND. GOD'S WAYS ARE NOT OUR WAYS. HOW OFTEN WE HEARD THAT? JOHN CHRYSOSTOM DIED IN EXILE IN 407. IN 1568 HE WAS DECLARED A DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH BY POPE ST. PIUS V. NOW WHEN YOU READ THESE LIVES OF THE SAINTS YOU CAN CULL A LIST OF VIRTUES, SOME GREAT VIRTUES IN FACT. AND IN READING THESE 2 SHORTER LIVES OF ST JOHN, THIS IS THE LIST THAT I CAME UP WITH. OKAY. HE LIVED THE VIRTUES OF CONSTANCY, OF LONG SUFFERING. LONG SUFFERING IS SOMETIMES REFERRED TO IN THE OLDER THEOLOGICAL TEXTBOOKS IN THE DISCUSSION OF VIRTUE AS THE VIRTUE OF LONGANIMITY. LONG SUFFERING. I MENTIONED CONSTANCY. STEADFASTNESS. FOR EXAMPLE IN HIS VOCATION. STEADFASTNESS AND PREACHING. COURAGE. FORTITUDE. HOPE, 1 OF 3 THEOLOGICAL VIRTUES. OBEDIENCE. HE WAS OBEDIENT TO CIVIL AUTHORITY. OBEDIENCE. VALOR. PATIENCE AND IN FACT HIS COLLECT PRAYER, DID YOU NOTICE HIS COLLECT PRAYER AT THE BEGINNING OF MASS MENTIONS SPECIFICALLY THAT HE MAY BE OUR MODEL OF PATIENCE, THE 4TH CENTURY ST. HE CAN BE 1 OF OUR MODELS OF PATIENCE. NEED PATIENCE IN YOUR LIFE? I DO. IF YOU ARE OF A CHOLERIC TEMPERAMENT YOU NEED PATIENCE IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW. SO WE LOOK TO HIM IN THAT REGARD. AND THEN HUMILITY. HE WAS A HUMBLE MAN. WE SEE THIS IN HIS ACCEPTING OF EXILE. HE DIED IN EXILE. ABOUT HIS LOOKING TO THE ABSOLUTE INCOMPREHENSIBILITY OF GOD'S DIVINE PROVIDENCE. AND FEAR NOT BECAUSE EVERYTHING WILL BE MADE RIGHT HE SAID EITHER IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT. THESE ARE HOPEFUL WORDS. CONSTANCY, LONG SUFFERING OR LONGANIMITY, COURAGE, FORTITUDE, HOPE, OBEDIENCE, VALOR, PATIENCE, AND HUMILITY. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT HOPE A LITTLE BIT HERE. HE HAD HOPE AND HE HAD TO HAVE HOPE TO GET HIM THROUGH ALL OF THIS. HOPE IS 1 OF THE 3 THEOLOGICAL VIRTUES, BY WHICH WE DESIRE AND EXPECT FROM GOD BOTH ETERNAL LIFE AND THE GRACE WE NEED NOW TO ONE DAY ATTAIN IT. SO HOPE IS A THEOLOGICAL VIRTUE HAS A VIEW TO ETERNITY WITH A VIEW IN THE HERE AND NOW THAT WE WILL OBTAIN THE GRACES NECESSARY TO ATTAIN THAT ETERNAL LIFE. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT HOPE. HOPE IS ULTIMATELY A VIRTUE THAT HAS A VIEW TO ETERNAL LIFE. THE BEATIFIC VISION. BUT ALSO HAS A PRESENCE IN THE HERE AND NOW WHEREBY WE ARE CONFIDENT, WITH FAITH, WE ARE CONFIDENT IN GOD HOPEFUL IN GOD WE WILL HOPE THAT WE WILL RECEIVE THE GRACES NOW TO ATTAIN THAT ETERNAL LIFE WHICH INVOLVES COOPERATION ON OUR PART WITH GOD. GOD IS NOT GOING TO DO IT ALL. REMEMBER CATHERINE OF SIENA. I HAVE QUOTED MANY TIMES. WITHOUT GOD I CANNOT. BUT WITHOUT ME GOD WILL NOT. AND ST. AUGUSTINE IN THE CATECHISM. I THINK 1847. THAT GOD WHO WILLED TO CREATE YOU WITHOUT YOU DOES NOT WILL TO SAVE YOU WITHOUT YOU. THAT REALLY TELLS US WHAT A LOVING GOD HE IS. WHAT A PERSONAL LOVING GOD HE IS WHY IS THAT? I TELL YOU WHY. BECAUSE HE IS MAKING IT CLEAR GOD IS THAT HE DOES NOT WANT TO DO IT ON HIS OWN. HE LOVES US SO MUCH HE WANTS TO BE INTIMATE WITH US SO MUCH THAT HE WANTS TO MAKE US AN ACTIVE CO-OPERATOR WITH HIM. A COWORKER IS WHAT THAT MEANS IN LATIN TO MAKE US A COWORKER WITH HIM IN BRINGING OURSELVES TO SALVATION WITH HIM. FOR ALL ETERNITY, THAT IS HOW MUCH HE LOVES US. HE DOES NOT WANT TO DO IT ALL. HE WANTS TO MAKE US AN ACTIVE COOPERATOR. HOPE IS THE THEOLOGICAL VIRTUE BY WHICH WE DESIRE AND EXPECT FROM GOD BOTH ETERNAL LIFE AND THE GRACE WE NEED TO ATTAIN IT. I LOVE THAT. HOPE IS A THEOLOGICAL VIRTUE BY WHICH WE DESIRE THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN AND ETERNAL LIFE IS OUR ULTIMATE END AND HAPPINESS. PLACING OUR TRUST IN CHRIST'S PROMISES AND NOT RELYING ON OUR OWN STRENGTH BUT ON THE HELP AND GRACE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. SCRIPTURE STATES, LET US HOLD FAST TO THE CONFESSION OF OUR HOPE WITHOUT WAVERING FOR HE WHO PROMISED IS ALWAYS FAITHFUL. HEBREWS 10:23. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS POURED OUT UPON US RICHLY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR, SO THAT WE MIGHT BE JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE AND BECOME HEIRS IN HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE. THAT IS TITUS 3:6 - 7. IN BOTH OF THOSE SCRIPTURES VERSES CAME OUT OF THE CATECHISM NUMBER 1817. 1817 WHICH IS RIGHT AFTER THE CATECHISM TALKS ABOUT VIRTUE WHICH WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THIS WEEK. VIRTUE IS GIVEN TO US ITS DEFINITION IN 1803. SO THIS TALK ABOUT HOPE COMES AFTER ABOUT THE TALK ABOUT VIRTUE. IT IS THE HUMAN PERSON THAT PURSUES EXCELLENCE, THE PURSUANCE OF THE GOOD AND TRUE IN CONCRETE DAILY ACTIONS WITH ALL 5 OF THE BODILY SENSES. SIGHT, SMELL, TASTE, TOUCH AND HEARING. AND THE 4 PRIMARY FACULTIES OF THE SOUL. INTELLECT, WILL, MEMORY AND IMAGINATION. THESE BEAUTIFUL 9 GIFTS OF THE BODY SOUL COMPOSITE. WE EMPLOY THESE 9 BEAUTIFUL GIFTS DAILY TO PURSUE THE GOOD THE TRUE AND THE BEAUTIFUL. THEREBY PRACTICING VIRTUE AND VIRTUOUS LIVING. WITH GOD'S GRACE. SO GOD DOES NOT WANT TO DO IT ALL. HE WANTS US TO BE AN ACTIVE COOPERATOR WITH HIM. AGAIN HOPE IS GIVEN TO US IN NUMBER 1817 OF THE CATECHISM. DEFINITION OF THE THEOLOGICAL VIRTUE WITH A VIEW TO ETERNAL LIFE. JUST A FEW PARAGRAPHS EARLIER 1803, IS THE DISCUSSION OF VIRTUE. AND WHAT THAT MEANS. WITH THESE 9 GREAT GIFTS. HOW ABOUT VALOR? THE VIRTUE OF VALOR. COURAGE. BOLDNESS. AS IN TIME OF BATTLE. BRAVERY. AS WHEN PROTECTING AND DEFENDING. FOR EXAMPLE PROTECTING AND DEFENDING THE CULTURE. OR AS A MALE PROTECTING AND DEFENDING VIRTUE. AND WOMEN. IT COMES FROM THE LATIN "VALERE" TO BE STRONG. WE HAVE THE LATIN ROOT IN THE WORD VALIANT. HE IS A VERY VALIANT PERSON. HE IS A PERSON OF VALOR. COURAGE AND BOLDNESS AS IN TIME OF BATTLE, BRAVERY AS WHEN PROTECTING AND DEFENDING. AGAIN SAY VIRTUE, CULTURE. IT COMES FROM THE LATIN "VALERE" TO BE STRONG. I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE FATHERS OF THE CHURCH IN GENERAL. BECAUSE ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM IS 1 OF THE FATHERS OF THE CHURCH, AND BY THE WAY HIS VIRTUE OF OBEDIENCE. IN THE 2ND LETTER OF TIMOTHY IN TODAY'S 1ST READING WE LEARN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF OBEDIENCE. ST. PAUL MAKES THAT CLEAR. AS DOES THE CENTURION WHO WANTS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT IN ASKING THAT HIS SERVANT BE HEALED. AND HE IS VERY HUMBLE HIMSELF. LORD I AM NOT WORTHY THAT YOU SHOULD ENTER UNDER MY ROOF BUT ONLY SAY THE WORD AND MY SERVANT SHALL BE HEALED. THESE ARE THE WORDS WE HEAR AT SACRED LITURGY. LATIN FOR BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD. BEHOLD HIM HE TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD. BLESSED ARE THOSE CALLED TO THE SUPPER OF THE LAMB. IN REFERENCE TO THE BOOK OF REVELATION. THE ETERNAL LITURGY. BUT I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE FATHERS OF THE CHURCH. THE FATHERS OF THE CHURCH ARE SAINTLY WRITERS OF THE EARLY CENTURIES WHOM THE CHURCH RECOGNIZES AS HER SPECIAL WITNESSES OF THE FAITH, ANTIQUITY, ORTHODOXY, PERSONAL SANCTITY AND THE APPROVAL BY THE CHURCH OF THEIR WRITINGS ARE THEIR FOUR MAIN PREROGATIVES TO BE CLASSIFIED AS A FATHER OF THE CHURCH. THE CHURCH FATHERS ARE COMMONLY DIVIDED INTO BOTH THE GREEK AND LATIN CATEGORIES. EAST AND WEST FATHERS. IT IS NOW GENERALLY HELD THAT THE LAST OF THE WESTERN FATHERS, THE LATIN FATHERS CLOSED WITH ST. ISIDORE OF SEVILLE WHO DIED IN 636. ONE THIRD THROUGH THE 7TH CENTURY. AND THE LAST OF THE EASTERN FATHERS THE GREEK FATHERS WAS ST. JOHN DAMASCENE WHO DIED IN 749. THE MIDDLE OF THE 8TH CENTURY. SO WE COULD SAY THAT THE PATRISTIC AGE FROM THE LATIN WORD - - MEANING FATHER, THE PATRISTIC AGE IS THE 1ST 8 CENTURIES OF THE CHURCH. THE 4 EASTERN AND WESTERN GREATS. WE HAVE ALL OF THESE GREEK FATHERS ALL OF THESE WESTERN FATHERS ALL THESE EASTERN AND WESTERN FATHERS BUT THERE'S 4 GREATS IN EACH OF THE CATEGORIES. THE GREAT FATHERS OF THE EAST ARE ST. BASIL THE GREAT WHO DIED IN 379, ST. GREGORY NAZIANZEN DIED IN 390, ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM DIED IN 407 AND ST. ATHANASIUS WHO DIED IN 373. I HAVE TALKED ABOUT ST. ATHANASIUS IN THE PAST. FEARLESS. ABSOLUTELY FEARLESS. ST. ATHANASIUS BUT I THINK I MENTIONED WE HAD A MEAN SQUIRREL AT THE FATHERS OF MERCY. YOU WOULD WALK OUT OUR BACK DOOR AND HE WOULD NOT MOVE. I DON'T KNOW IF HE THOUGHT HE WOULD BE FED. IF YOU TRY TO GET CLOSE TO HIM HE WOULD HISS AT YOU. SO WE NAMED HIM ATHANASIUS BECAUSE HE WAS FEARLESS. IT WAS A FEARLESS SQUIRREL. THE 4 GREAT FATHERS OF THE WEST ARE ST. AMBROSE. DIED IN 397. ST. AUGUSTINE, DIED IN 430, ST. JEROME DIED IN 420, AND ST. GREGORY THE GREAT WHO DIED IN 604. SO THESE 4 GREATS FROM THE EAST AND THE 4 GREATS FROM THE WEST OF WHICH ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM IS A GREAT FROM THE EAST. A VIRTUE AND I HAVE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM'S VIRTUES THAT I CULLED FROM HIS SHORT 2 LIVES OF HIS. IT IS A HABITUAL AND FIRM DISPOSITION. IT IS AN HABITUAL AND FIRM DISPOSITION TO SEEK OUT AND TO DO THE GOOD. TO SEEK OUT AND PURSUE WHAT IS TRUE, GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL. TO EMBRACE IT AND LIVE IT ACCORDING TO THE MORAL LAW AS REVEALED THROUGH SCRIPTURE, TRADITION AND THE MAGISTERIUM. AND THE SAINTS LIKE JOHN CHRYSOSTOM CERTAINLY CERTAINLY SHOW US THE WAY. VIRTUE IS AN HABITUAL AND FIRM DISPOSITION TO SEEK OUT AND DO THE GOOD. THE MORAL VIRTUES ARE ACQUIRED THROUGH HUMAN EFFORT AIDED BY GOD'S GRACE, THE 3 THEOLOGICAL VIRTUES OF FAITH, HOPE AND CHARITY ARE GIFTS OF GOD. IN THE CARDINAL VIRTUES THE 4 PIVOTAL HUMAN VIRTUES FROM THE LATIN WORD CARDO WHICH MEANS PIVOT OR HINGE BECAUSE WITH THESE 4 CARDINAL VIRTUES, HINGE LIKE HINGES ON THE DOOR, THEY HINGE THE ENTIRE MORAL LIFE. WHAT ARE THEY? PRUDENCE, JUSTICE, FORTITUDE AND TEMPERANCE. THE HUMAN VIRTUES ARE STABLE DISPOSITIONS OF THE INTELLECT AND WILL THAT GOVERN OUR HUMAN ACTS. THEY ORDER OUR PASSIONS AND KEEP OUR PASSIONS IN CHECK. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU EXERT ANGER IT WILL BE A JUST ANGER. SAY IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE. THAT YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE ANGRY AT THIS INJUSTICE YOU WITNESS. YOU DO NOT WANT TO PRACTICE UNJUST ANGER. THINK OF JESUS IN THE TEMPLE WITH THE MONEY CHANGERS. A JUST ANGER. THE HUMAN VIRTUES ARE STABLE DISPOSITIONS OF THE INTELLECT AND WILL THAT GOVERN OUR HUMAN ACTS AND ORDER OUR PASSIONS, AND GUIDE OUR CONDUCT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RIGHT REASON AND FAITH. FAITH OBTAINED THROUGH SACRED SCRIPTURE, TRADITION AND THE MAGISTERIUM THE TEACHING AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH. THIS IS THE MORAL LIFE. THIS IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE. AND THE GREAT SAINTS LIKE ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM CERTAINLY CERTAINLY SHOW US THE WAY. ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM PRAY FOR US. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. >> AMEN. >> GOD BLESS YOU.
