as it is written in Isaiah the prophet look I am sending my messenger ahead of you who prepare your way [Music] [Music] you only live today once why do alone branch together happy Monday welcome to branch together episode 58 today's show covers one of the most important chapters in this book we call Hebrews so stay tuned for the central interpretative theme it's the main theme that gives life and a bit of understanding to the rest of this book first we're gonna pray and then we'll jump into the reading God thank you for your goodness thank you for this book of Hebrews Lourdes in Chapter one we saw that that you spoke in the Old Testament through your prophets but in these last days you speak through Jesus and we know this book is going to help us know and hear Jesus better lord I pray that that you speak today to us as we are faithful in studying your word help us to hear what you have for us and and to be transformed as you want us to be your name we pray amen hebrews chapter 2 therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard so that we do not drift away for if the message spoken through angels proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received it's just penalty how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation it was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him while God confirmed their witness and signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will for he did not put the world to come about which we are speaking under the control of angels instead someone testified somewhere what is man that you think of him or the Son of man that you care for him you made him lower than the Angels for a little while you crowned him with glory and honor you put all things under his control for when he put all things under his control he left nothing outside of his control at present we do not yet see all things under his control but we see Jesus who was made lower than the Angels for a little while now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death so that by God's grace he would experience death on behalf of everyone for it was fitting for him for whom and through whom all things exist in bringing many sons to glory to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering for indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin and so he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters saying I will proclaim your name to my brothers in the midst of the assembly I will praise you again he says I will be confident in him and again here I am with the children God has given me therefore since the children share in flesh and blood he likewise shared in their humanity so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death that is the devil and set free those who were held in save slavery all their lives by their fear of death for surely his concern is not for angels but he is concerned for Abraham's descendants therefore he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God to make atonement for the sins of the people for since he himself suffered when he was tempted he is able to help those who are tempted the first verse in this chapter gives us a clue as to the primary purpose of the book we are told that look at it we are told that we must pay closer attention to what we have heard lest we drift away what the author is saying is that we must be diligent about listening to the word of truth lest we fall away from our faith in these first verses his argument is basically that in the Old Testament the Angels brought a message and we know that people rejected that and they were punished so now since we have Jesus who is the ultimate revelation of God it's actually God himself revealed to us through a divine man so now in light of that if we reject the word of truth how much worse will it be for us I want you to notice the first part of verse 1 though the author writes that we should quote pay much closer attention what he's getting at here is that we need to study and learn and know well this is why this book is basically a book of theology he's saying that if we want to not fall away when hard times come that we should know Jesus as well as we can through this book I will a pull from the NIV application comment area its volume on Hebrews quite a bit the author of that volume George Guthrie sums up this idea in this way he says quote your perseverance in Christian faith will be in direct proportion to the clarity with which you see who Jesus is and what he has accomplished on your behalf if we start losing track of who Jesus is or losing track of the truth of the gospel when difficult times come we will lose our faith that's why this book is attempting to teach us about Jesus to teach us what we call Christology it's the study of Christ's study of Jesus that's the inner of this chapter the rest of the body of the chapter deals with a couple of themes I'm just gonna touch on one briefly I think this is really important in the last few verses we see we see pretty clearly this idea that Jesus had to be made like man and and this is what I'm getting at when I say we're gonna learn about Jesus there's little nuggets like this throughout the book Jesus had to become like man he had to be like us so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest sometimes my girls and I go on hikes and there's some woods behind our house that we love there's a creek and a few fallen logs that we use to cross the creek when we're hiking and we come to one of those crossings my younger girls will stop and they don't want to get up on their own unless I get up onto the log and I put my hand out for them they won't but when I do that they're willing to grab my hand and climb up keeping their eyes on me see when I'm on the log and I'm safe they see that they see that I know what it's like to be up there they know that I can do it I think it's like this with Jesus he went first so he knows what it's like to walk through the difficulties of this world for us he has conquered them if we know him if we learn to hear his voice and we learn who he is then we will trust him and we'll be willing to climb up on that log no matter how difficult the climb no matter how terrifying the drop is on each side we'll be willing to take his hand and take that step that inspires me to know Jesus more I'm excited about tomorrow how about you we'll see you there [Music]
